Last year, Microsoft officially acquired Nokia, the company's mobile division swiftly merged with Microsoft and quite a few key employees stayed on. However, now around a year later, Nokia's former CEO, Stephen Elop, is leaving Microsoft, alongside a few other key members of the Nokia mobile team as Microsoft re-organizes its mobile team.

The announcement came today from Microsoft, with the company saying that it was “aligning engineering teams to strategy”. Kirill Tatarinov, Mark Penn and Eric Rudder will also be parting ways with Microsoft.

This news isn't too surprising, after all immediately following the Nokia merger, Microsoft let go of around 20,000 employees, most of which were former Nokia employees, although some of the Windows team were also out of a job.

In a statement on Elop's departure, Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella said that “This change will enable us to deliver better products and services that our customers love at a more rapid pace”. Now the Windows and mobile teams will be working closer together in a new Windows and Devices Group, headed by Microsoft's head of operating systems, Terry Myserson.

Once again, this is all part of Microsoft's new device and services strategy, which came in to place when Satya Nadella took over the company. This also comes ahead of the official launch of Windows 10, which takes place on the 29th of July.

KitGuru Says: Microsoft let go  a lot of Nokia employees following the acquisition. Additionally, the company is taking a whole new approach to mobile and Elop likely didn't fit in to that vision.

Remember how we thought ex-Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, would be the next Microsoft CEO after the leaving of Steve Ballmer and that he might even sell off the Xbox division? Well that couldn't have been more wrong. The CEO position eventually went to Microsoft lifer, Satya Nadella and now there's reports that Elop could actually head up the Xbox division.

According to a leaked memo from outgoing executive VP, Julie Larson-Green, Elop will be replacing her when she transitions to leading the My Life & Work team in ASG and serving as the Chief Experience Officer. Green was brought in when Don Mattrick jumped ship after launching the Xbox One, to help out the ailing Zynga. While she hasn't done a bad job of it, perhaps the reason for her moving on is because of the quite evident second place positioning of the Xbox One console in the current-gen race.

“I’ll remain in role leading the DnS organization in the interim until the Nokia deal closes and Stephen Elop makes his transition to Microsoft,” Larson-Green said in the memo. “We’ve been meeting regularly throughout and are making a lot of progress, ensuring our teams are ready for the Day 1 close and beyond.

“You are all in great hands with Stephen and already we’ve shared a lot with him and his LT from Nokia regarding all of the fantastic people, teams and products in DnS. I also know many of you are looking forward to welcoming the Nokia team and working more closely with them.”

Elop is technically rejoining the company with its $5 billion Nokia buyout, as he was previously head of the software giant's Office division.

KitGuru Says: Microsoft is still feeling the shockwaves from its awful early reveal last year, so it'll be interesting if Elop can turn that image around and help make it more competitive with main rival Sony.

In-case you haven't heard, Steve Ballmer, long standing fan of developers and Microsoft CEO, will be stepping down at some point in the next year, which means Microsoft is on the hunt for a replacement. One man being considered is current Nokia head, Stephen Elop, who -it's suggested – might even consider selling off the entire Xbox portion of Microsoft's business.

This is all really vague speculation at the moment, so don't fret too much. The words about Microsoft division sales of any kind come from “three people with knowledge of his thinking,” over at Bloomberg, so take these rumours with a tablespoon of salt. With that out of the way though, let's look at all the other crazy things Elop would potentially do if he was given the nod as CEO.

It's all to do with focus, apparently. Instead of diversifying out into different portions of the tech industry, Elop would not only sell off the Xbox brand, but it's also speculated that he'd kill off the Bing search engine too, something that Microsoft has invested billions in and heavily entrenched into its Windows operating system.

“What do I do for fun? Burn money.”

Without all these side businesses though, what would Microsoft focus on? Apparently, Elop would love to promote Microsoft Office as its defining product, despite the growth of many free alternatives like Open Office. Elop previously brokered the deal to bring cut back versions of Office to Nokia's Symbian OS equipped devices and he'd like to see more moves like that, adding these work related applications to handsets from both Apple and Android manufacturers.

Elop has been CEO at Nokia for a few years now and was the one behind that “burning platform,” memo that leaked out back in 2010, suggesting that Nokia had but a short time to turn its fortunes around or it would be buried by the competition. He also oversaw the recent acquisition by Microsoft of the long time phone manufacturer.

If you're worried that these rumours might come true, don't cry yet, as Elop isn't alone in his race for Microsoft CEO. Ford's chief executive officer, Alan Mulally (great name) is also being courted for the position, along with three current Microsoft employees: Tony Bates, Satya Nadella and Kevin Turner.

KitGuru Says: This seems like a lot of hear-say to me, but we've got to bring it up, it's just too juicy a rumour. Selling off Xbox? Who would buy it? I'm rooting for Sega.

Nokia recently teamed up with Microsoft, to launch a new attack on the mobile marketplace. Nokia leader Stephen Elop has issued a warning this week to Android phone makers, saying they should be concerned.

The news that Google are going to buy Motorola for $12.5 billion has caused much debate in analyst circles, with some claiming that Motorola will get better service than rivals HTC or Samsung.

Stephen Elop has been fueling the fire and he said at a Helsinki seminar this week “If I happened to be someone who was an Android manufacturer or an operator, or anyone with a stake in that environment, I would be picking up my phone and calling certain executives at Google and say ‘I see signs of danger ahead.”

Stephen Elop: Nokia CEO

The move, he claims has also highlighted the positive move for Nokia to partner up with Microsoft.

“The very first reaction I had was very clearly the importance of the third ecosystem and the importance of the partnership that we announced on February 11, it is more clear than ever before.”

Nokia have been having a tough 12 months, and the latest reports we have heard from industry insiders suggest that several leading Nokia executives are expected to leave the board.

CEO Stephen Elop has apparently new plans to revigorate Nokia in 2011 and their executive board is made up of 10 top executives within the organisation. We haven't heard how many are set to leave, but a source close to KitGuru told us that 3 or4 people were being shortlisted.

Nokia CEO and ex Microsoft man: Stephen Elop

Stephen Elop is expected to announce his new plan and direction on Friday during an analyst meeting and it appears that people who will be asked to leave, will not be told under Thursday at the earliest. Elop has said in private circles that he is deciding how much he wants to keep Finnish talent in the team, which suggest he might bring in new executives from other countries with fresh ideas on how they can retake the market.

Another topic of conversation will be the analyst suggestion that Elop ditch the Symbian operating system in favour of Microsoft's WIndows Phone 7. This may also make a topic of conversation in the analyst call on Friday.

Stephen Elop is a Canadian citizen and he replaced Olli Pekka Kallasvuo as Nokia CEO last September. He worked for Microsoft from January 2008 until then as head of the Business Division, responsible for the Microsoft Office line of products and as a member of the companies senior leadership team. He was also COO of Juniper Networks, president of worldwide field operations at Adobe Systems and CEO of Macromedia until they were acquired by Adobe.

KitGuru says: We hope to see a stronger year from Nokia and this might be a good move from Elop.
