Do you remember the truckload of EVGA RTX 30 series cards stolen in California in October 2021? Some of those cards have now reportedly been found up for sale in a Vietnamese store. Ouch.

As per Vietnamese Gaming Drama, users that bought RTX 30 series cards from an undisclosed Vietnamese retailer made the unfortunate discovery that the products were stolen, after checking the cards' warranty with EVGA. Part of said warranty process involves users having to provide their card's serial number, leading to the discovery that the card was indeed one of those belonging to the stolen shipment of RTX 30 series cards.

The Vietnamese retailer in question was selling these cards with a 1-month warranty, which is apparently quite common for any graphics cards imported to Vietnam through “less official” methods. Despite the limited warranty, it seems the customers were still persuaded to buy these GPUs because of their relatively low prices, with boxed RTX 3080 Ti cards being sold for the equivalent of £1294 in Vietnamese currency.

Technically, these cards should be returned to EVGA, as they're stolen goods. However, given the cards ended up in Vietnam, I would be surprised if any of them did make their way back to EVGA.

Razer comes to CES each year armed with something innovative and while not all of its prototypes end up making it to market as a full-fledged product, they do tend to garner quite a bit of interest. This year though, it seems that Razer attracted a little too much attention with its triple display laptop and Chroma projector, as two of the company's prototypes have been reported as stolen in what could be a case of corporate espionage.

The theft was confirmed by Razer CEO, Min-Liang Tan on Facebook earlier today. He noted that the company has filed a police report and is working with CES management to try and track down the thief. We don't know exactly which prototype was stolen, it could have been two laptops, two projectors or one of each.

The investigation is still in the early stages but Razer's CEO did speculate that perhaps this theft could be down to corporate espionage, which wouldn't be much of a stretch given that CES is largely an industry-only event.

“We treat theft/larceny, and if relevant to this case, industrial espionage, very seriously – it is cheating, and cheating doesn’t sit well with us”, the post reads. “Penalties for such crimes are grievous and anyone who would do this clearly isn’t very smart”.

Razer came to CES this year with two prototypes, the first was Project Valerie, a new version of the Blade Pro with two additional pop-out displays for a portable triple display laptop. The second prototype was Project Ariana, a 4K projector that aimed to extend a game's FOV across the entire room.

KitGuru Says: This is horrible news for Razer and with corporate espionage on the table, this could end up being an even bigger issue than it already is. Hopefully both prototypes end up getting tracked down swiftly.

In the last year, two shipments of Nintendo products have been stolen in transit here in the UK and now the same thing is happening to Sony, as a “violent assault” resulted in early copies of Uncharted 4: A Thief's End being stolen. A few copies of the game have already surfaced in the UK, according to Sony Interactive's president, Shuhei Yoshida, who has spoken out to warn fans of potential spoilers for the final game in Naughty Dog's series.

Writing on the PlayStation blog, Yoshida explained the situation: “We have some unfortunate news to report that a number of copies of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End were stolen while in transit. While we are continuing to work with the police to resolve the matter – which is the subject of an ongoing criminal investigation – it appears that a few copies of the game have surfaced in the UK.”

“From what I have played of Nathan Drake’s latest adventure, I can tell you that it is very much worth the wait. As with most Naughty Dog games, the unfolding story is such an integral part of the experience and for this reason we wanted to warn you to beware of the potential for spoilers to be posted by people with access to stolen copies of the game.”

In a statement sent to MCV, a Sony spokesperson added that the game's release date is still the 10th of May, even though some may manage to get their hands on the game early. “We would like to reassure our players and partners that we are taking all possible steps to make the launch of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End the success it deserves to be for the millions of fans of Naughty Dog and the Uncharted series.”

KitGuru Says: You can't help but feel bad for the team that put thousands of hours of work into this project, only to have something like this happen so close to launch.

It turns out game ‘thieves' aren't always pirates or hackers, as there's still some real world ones out there. A lorry was hijacked while in transit between a Nintendo warehouse and GAME store and its stock of the Special Edition of third person shooter Splatoon and its accompanying amiibo, which were set for release in Europe on the 28th, were stolen. GAME has now apologised to customers and informed them that it won't be able to fulfil orders for that particular version of the game on launch day.

“We can confirm that the lorry transporting the Splatoon stock from Nintendo’s European warehouse to GAME UK has been stolen,” Nintendo said in a statement (via MCV). “Included as part of this delivery was GAME’s allocation of the Splatoon + Squid Inkling amiibo and as a result we are unable to honour pre-orders for this item in GAME. We are working with GAME to contact those customers affected. Whilst these unfortunate circumstances were out of Nintendo UK and GAME’s control, we apologise for any inconvenience or disappointment that this has caused.”

That squid does look a little suspicious…

To make up for this, GAME is now offering those affected the standard version of the game, and a £10 refund as well. Replacement games will be sent out first class to make sure that gamers receive them on time. However, if players wish to purchase the special edition of the game somewhere else instead, they can be given a full refund.

The last thing you would expect when it comes to helping make the planet greener, is that you might need to defend your efforts from opportunists, but that's just the problem being faced by Lincolnshire farmers at the moment. In the past few weeks, over 100 solar panels have have been stolen, along with their associated converters and other electrical components.

The latest thefts involved two separate incidents, whereby on the 14th and 16th of March, two farms were targeted on the east-coast county, with some 66 and 58 panels being stolen respectively. With thieves clearly targeting locations that are quire isolated, farmers are being warned to take precautions to protect their installations. While locked gates may provide some protection, police are – ironically – suggesting electrical protection such as security lights and CCTV cameras.

panels

These raids follow on from other thefts that took place earlier this year. FWI reports that 14 panels were stolen from another farm in early March, whilst a full 84 were taken as February drew to a close.

Over the past few years, the British government has put aside £2 million a year to subsidise farmers that installed solar panels in vacant fields, in order to encourage green energy production and to aid agriculture. That was stopped in January this year however amid a row that it was seeing food production outsourced overseas. That may well mean that solar panel arrays that are targeted by thieves might end up not being replaced.

In the wake of the Edward Snowden leaks, where we learned that the NSA and GCHQ were spying on just about everyone, some responded with trust, believing that those in charge were doing so to protect our safety. Others doubted that people in those sorts of positions would abuse their power. Now an interesting parable has emerged, as it turns out that a number of Californian police officers are currently under investigation, accused of illegally accessing the phones of criminals they've arrested, in order to copy nude and revealing photos from their phone.

In a court document discovered by the ContraCostaTimes, was an admission from one officer that he and his fellow officers in California's Highway Patrol Unit, had been stealing nude photos from criminals' phones for years, often trading them among one another, much like the leakers of the recent celebrity nude images are said to have done.

Officer Sean Harrington, 35 has specifically confessed to two instances of taking the mobile phones of people he'd arrested for driving whilst under the influence (DUI), copying sexually suggestive or nude photos to his phone and then sending them to other members of the department. However it's been implied that many more officers were involved in similar antics and had been doing so for years.

nudes
“Sir, I'm going to have to write you up for not being hot enough.”

Understandably, the higher ups have denied any knowledge of these actions: “The allegations anger and disgust me,” CHP Commissioner Joe Farrow said. “We expect the highest levels of integrity and moral strength from everyone in the California Highway Patrol, and there is no place in our organization for such behaviour.”

However, regardless of the laws the officer(s) in question broke by copying the photos (copyright infringement, illegal search, felony computer theft and potentially revenge porn) and the moral implications of it, there's a much worse side effect of the whole thing. Officers found to have taken part in this, cannot be relied upon to provide evidence against the individuals they ‘stole' the pictures from. That means that the women that Harrington caught driving drunk, will get off without a charge because of his actions.

While the investigation is ongoing, Harrington and possibly one of his fellow officers have been placed on “administrative duties” and are not on patrol at this time.

KitGuru Says: This, combined with the fact that the NSA has confirmed its employees used its spying tools to look in on lovers and ex-partners, shows that this sort of invasive policing is too tempting a power too abuse.

Conservative MP, Mike Weatherley, has called for in-game thieves to be prosecuted like real criminals. The UK politician is a World of Warcraft player himself and understands that in-game items can be traded for substantial amounts of real world cash. As a result, he has called upon parliament to consider prosecuting account hackers and in-game scammers like real world criminals.

This isn't completely out of the realm of possibility, game hackers have been arrested and jailed in other countries before. Last year we reported on a Chinese group that specialized in stealing WoW accounts and selling them off for profit. In addition, just last week we reported that a League of Legends hacker has been jailed for hacking in to Riot servers and selling premium hack services, earning him $1000 a day.

Weatherly requested that the UK Justice Minister accelerate legislation to give gamers the same amount of legal protection over digital items as you would have in the real world. However, he did add that only serious or repeat offenders should be targeted rather than just anyone found guilty of committing a minor indiscretion.

Right now, digital items are a legal grey area but the fact is that these items can still be worth a lot of money, they can also take a long time to acquire.

Late last week, 10 men from a hacking group responsible for stealing and defrauding 10,000 World of Warcraft accounts, were found guilty and dealt sentences as high as two years in a Chinese prison.

The first five to be arrested were named Chen, Ma, Zhu, Zhi, and Wang. The operation started off with Chen who had set up a small space where he and his colleagues would purchase stolen WoW accounts, log in to them and then sell the contents of those accounts for profit. After a while Zhu, a member of Chen's team had broken off from the original group and started up his own studio, he then hired workers to help him flip stolen accounts for profit.

jeremy-sun-wolk-1920xwide

It couldn't last forever though, eventually an investigation was launched and authorities ended up learning that over 10,000 WoW accounts were looted and flipped for over $10,000 profit. After both Chen and Zhu's teams were arrested, nine out of the ten men involved were charged with nearly two years in prison as well as a $1000 fine. However, because Chen started the trend, he got the standard two years in prison coupled with an $8000 fine. All ten men also had their computer equipment and profits from the operation confiscated.

KitGuru Says: There's no word on whats going to happen to the people who had their WoW accounts stolen but considering all of the profits were confiscated, maybe it would be nice if it was split amongst those affected. Then again, that would only work out at less than one dollar each.

When Biswamohan Pani decided to leave Intel for AMD in the summer of 2008, he was asked point blank at an ‘exit interview' if he still had any Intel information or property. He lied and, as Intel would later find out, he'd also began working for chip rival AMD. KitGuru checks the position of CCTV cameras around the office before typing up a report.

Let's be honest, most people will have walked out of their office with a pen, elastic band, paper clip or highlighter at some stage in their lives. While your bosses would rather their company's stationary remained on company ground, it's a nice grey area with little impact on your existing employer's actual business.

Indeed, if you then moved to a rival and carried on using your ‘hot' rubber band/pen/paper clip, your new boss is unlikely to be accused of gaining competitive advantage.

Mr Pani has been jailed for taking his work home – on a much grander scale.

Not only did he download a ton of secret/proprietary documents before leaving Intel – he also carried on accessing the chip maker's systems after he left and began working for AMD. The US District Attorney prosecuting the case said that there was no evidence that AMD asked for the documents, used the information or even knew of their existence. Nice.

A highlight of Mr Pani's theft occurred on 8th June 2008 when he accessed 13 documents with intellectual property worth an estimated $400 million.

Although it's hard to know what Mr Pani intended to use the information for, because the FBI tracked down the theft and made an arrest in early July – before Mr Pani was able to cash in on his theft.

In the same way that surfing the next does not involve waves, Pani's theft is unlikely to have involved vaults

KitGuru says: Looking at Bulldozer and Core right now, it's hard to imagine any cross-pollination has occurred. Given the overall value of the information stolen, does 3 years in prison and a $17,500 fine seem enough? Either way, it's a classic case of ‘Thief Inside'.

The hottest story this morning, is the news that Crysis 2 has been leaked and is presently cascading its viral way across the world's newsgroups and torrent sites. KitGuru has been inundated with information. Here's our latest update.

When Doom 3 was going to launch, all those Martian moons ago, a version made its way out into the public domain early. Almost everyone we know, walked down a few corridors and got a chance to explore a tiny part of what would become a major gaming event that year.

However, it was very early, it was very patchy and – in all honestly – rather than hurt demand, it actually seemed to act like an appetiser. Appetites were indeed stoked and sales of Doom 3 did very well indeed, thank you very much.

So, what version of Crysis 2 has been released illegally ?

Reports coming in say that it is at the ‘early release candidate' stage. OK – so it is a ‘fairly full' version.

The real shocker is that it is the DEVELOPER CODE BASE.

While any misfit in a game shop around the country could pirate a version off the shelves a few days before launch, only the inner circle at EA/Crytek/nVidia would be able to illegally make this kind of code available.

There are a lot of rumours out there right now, here are some of the ones that are most prevalent:-

  1. It was released by someone in Germany
Reports suggest that accompanying readme files are in German
    .
  2. It is a 64-bit version only
People who have accessed the illegal copy are reporting that switching to 32-bit mode causes crashes
    .
  3. Audio is not working
No USB audio, but works with traditional headphones – that should help EA track down the culprits
    .
  4. Smooth on a GTX570
If correct, would mean that Crytek/EA have been much more intelligent about the ‘minimum hardware required to run the game' than with the original Crysis
    .
  5. Overall ‘buggy'
Reports indicate that it is far from the smooth, polished version you'd expect to buy in the stores when it is finally (officially) released
    .
  6. It is certainly the Developer Version – not any version of ‘genuine final release code'
People are saying that you need to type dev-mode make: Crysis.exe-DEVMODE to get things running. Not standard in a true release
We guess that Crytek boss, Cevat Yerli, will strike down with great anger and furious vengeance, those that sin against his company. Thieves, you have been warned.

KitGuru says: We're telling you again, don't try this at home.
