Dinosaur survival sim The Stomping Land was one of last year's little Kickstarter success stories, pulling in over $100,000 for the fledgling developer, SuperCrit. For a while all seemed well, with regular updates, trailers, feature lists and eventually, an early access release on Steam. However in the last three months, little has been heard of the development team, the game hasn't been updated and now, to put a nail in its coffin, The Stomping Land has been removed from Steam.

The official product page is still there, if you want to read all the negative reviews of people saying how little content is actually in the game and the forums are there for those that want to read all the demands for a refund, but that's it. Much like The War Z saga last year, but at least that developer talked about it.

“Jig”, as lead developer Alex Fundora goes by, has said very little in the pat few months. His only statement came after weeks of complaints from the community about lack of discussion or updates. He claimed to be porting the game over from Unreal Engine 3, to Unreal Engine 4. A lengthy process, but one he said would be completed in due time.

The only other game relevant information came the game's PR manager in Mid-July, when he announced that while the game was still being worked on, his contract had come to an end. Some thought this was curious since the game hadn't been out more than a few weeks at that point.

It's not clear at this time whether SuperCrit, or Valve was responsible for the Steam takedown. What we do know is that the SuperCrit site seems to be defunct and that the developer is AWOL. Even if he does update the game at this point, it seems unlikely the game will ever recapture the buzz it had.

KitGuru Says: Such a shame as this game sounded a bit like the BC we never had.

The Stomping Land was a project that we've been quietly excited about for some time. It features an open world survival system where you tame and fight with dinosaurs. You can even ride them if you survive for long enough. It also recently released on Steam, so some of you have dived in to see what all the fuss is about and how the game is shaping up. Unfortunately, some of you have now gotten in touch to say that the game looks like it might be dead. One of you even suggested it might be an early access scam.

The developers involved with The Stomping Land have always been a quiet bunch. Since the original Kickstarter just over a year ago, the updates have been weeks and occasionally months apart. They've been there though, until recently, when things got eerily quiet. None of the social network accounts have been posted on since May and the official forum is filled with people raging about the lack of updates. All of this came to a head today however, when the PR manager for the game announced that his contract had actually ended when the Early Access version of the game hit Steam at the end of May.

“I should have elaborated more in my Monday post on why I am discontinuing the weekly updates,” said GovernorOstritch on the official forums, referencing his announcement that going forward, he wouldn't be updating the community on what's going on. His most recent posts boiled down to saying that the game was being worked on but he couldn't talk about it.

“I will no longer be handling the PR for The Stomping Land. I work as a contractor/freelancer and I have been under no obligation to do work for The Stomping Land since May 31 when my contract expired. It has been my desire to see this game succeed and so I've continued acting in this capacity while I pursue other ventures when time permits. ”

Ultimately, he said that he didn't want to “string the community along,” when he had nothing to report on the game's status.

Did somebody hit the developers with their bolas? You know they can't get out yet, right? That feature hasn't been added yet.

The problem with the community as it stands, is no one knows what's going on. Early access reviews of the game haven't been favourable, as there's a lot of missing content at the moment, with a lot still to do. Even the game is being updated, it's not clear when it will happen or what's going on as communication with the community has completely halted.

The worry from those that remain fans of it, is that by the time the next update rolls around or dare I say it, the game is actually released, no-one will care anymore.

The only notification that something is being done with the game, is that the sound development is still ongoing, as this was posted on Youtube a couple of days ago.

KitGuru Says: Have any of you been playing around with the early access version? Considering it's £19 in such an early stage, it seems like many people simply feel ripped off.

Kickstarter success and all round childhood dream title The Stomping Land, is fast approaching its beta release and to celebrate that fact, the creators over at SuperCrit, are releasing extra details about the game every day over the next week.

So far we've reached day II, which breaks down who exactly the player is in this dinosaur dominated world and how they can survive – if they're careful. “You are a hunter and a scavenger,” it begins, really highlighting that this isn't some dinosaur slaughtering romp through the wilderness. This is Rust, with lizards that weigh upwards of five tonnes trying to eat you.

But it's more dangerous than even that pantless, infested world: as most dinosaurs in The Stomping Land can kill you with one hit. Most of them too, you can't even kill if you get a bunch of your fellow hunters together. Your little spears and arrows just won't do enough damage. How do you scavenge from these great beasts then, you might be asking? By letting other, bigger dinosaurs kill them for you.

“It's up you to track these epic prehistoric creatures, let them fight to the death and then salvage the remains.” Just as with Rust and those lovely supply drops of C4 though, in Stomping Land there's other hunters to watch out for and finding yourself first to a big kill is only good if you can get what you need and get out fast.

tracking
Tracking will require patience and skill, especially with the more elusive dinosaurs

While we didn't know that some dinosaurs couldn't be killed before, it seemed quite self explanatory when you consider the size of these things and how thick their hide would have been, early human technology really wouldn't cut it. One element we haven't heard or figured out before though, is the tracking that Stomping Land will employ.

To find these giant dinosaurs, which have better meat and resources to gather from, you'll need to use footprints, with each major dinosaur having a unique spore. However you'll also be able to hear them in the distance and tell them apart by the sound. But if you get stuck and need to track them over huge distances, Stomping Land has stars that follow each of the major dinos around, giving you a rough idea of their location. When two come together as well, you know there's a big scrap going on somewhere. You won't be able to use them during the day though and expect rain and ambient sound to make finding footprints or noises that much harder.

Stomping Land is set for release on the PC in April.

KitGuru Says: This is Molyneux's BC, but with PVP. This could be an amazing game. I for one can't wait to try it.

If like me part of you has always been saddened that Lionhead's B.C. never saw the light of day, then chances are you've also been keeping an eye on the Kickstarter success, The Stomping Land, which sees players taking on the role of a pre-historic tribesman, fighting dinosaurs, building a tribe and surviving in a world populated by reptiles the size of houses. Recently the developers added a list of what dinosaurs were in the game to the official site and one of them isn't a land creature: it's a Helicoprion.

helicoiprion
That's ol' Saw-Mouth-Magillacutty up there.

While the Helicoprion's skull is terrifying in its own right, just look at some of the artist interpretations of what one may have looked like in reality:

helicoprion2
“Damn it Bob, did you let Cthulu mate with the sharks again?”

helicoprion
This more conservative example is no less terrifying

It may also have been as much as twice the size of a Great White shark, making it the second biggest pre-historic shark we're scared of – after Dinoshark of course.

No word on whether you'll be able to tame or ride the Helicorpion like you can other dinosaurs, but it would be pretty awesome, especially in the online multiplayer component. It'd be bad enough to get attacked by a tribe mounted on giant Allosaurs, but imagine a host of tribesmen emerging from the water on the backs of saw mouthed, evil.

KitGuru Says: I think I just gave myself the shivers.

After Black and White 2, but before Project Ego that eventually became the Fable franchise, Peter Molyneux worked on a game called BC. This was back in the early 2000s and I couldn't have been more excited about it. You were a caveman hunter, trying to survive and help your tribe in a world populated by dinosaurs. Unfortunately despite some very pretty (for the time) early visuals and an amazing concept, the game never made it out of the starting blocks. Now though, one man is making this game, though it's called something a little different: Stomping Land.

Alex Fundora is the man behind this new project and it looks like everything you'd ever want in a game. You're a hunter taking on the world of dinosaurs. Just got yourself a difficult kill with a bow and arrow? Good for you, now a T-Rex is stealing it. If you want to take down that iconic predator, you'll need friends, which is where the game's co-op and multiplayer elements come in.

stompingground
Graphics are a little ropey at the moment, but just imagine the possibilities.

According to the Kickstarter video, there will be cooperative play, allowing you to work together with your buddies to build a tribe and take down some of the larger dinosaurs, and competitive PvP with rival tribes going against each other in visceral stone-age combat. Since this is a survival sim as much as a game about hunting dinosaurs, think of it as DayZ, but with somewhat bigger dangers to worry about than zombies.

The video on the funding page shows off the ability to build too. You can craft traps and materials, buildings and shelters. There's a lot of scope here for something amazing.

The public seem to have noticed this too, as in just under 24 hours it met its $30,000 (how reasonable is that?) funding goal and looks set to breeze past it. According to Kicktraq, it's likely to surpass $300,000 by the end of its run, easily enough to hit all stretch goals.

KitGuru Says: I'm just bummed it's not set for release until March next year.
