Since Sony first began bringing PlayStation exclusives over to PC, many have had their eyes on Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch's late PS4-era masterpiece. Unfortunately, years have passed without any official announcement. However, that could be changing this week.

According to XboxEra's Nick Baker, who has reported accurate information in the past, Sony is finally planning to announce Ghost of Tsushima for PC, with an announcement expected this month, potentially landing on the 5th of March. If accurate, that would mean we'll be getting an announcement tomorrow, so we won't have to wait long to see is this rumour holds any weight.

This isn't the first time we've heard about Ghost of Tsushima for PC. This new version of the game has been rumoured for years already, reaching a high point when the game's PS5 upgrade launched in 2022.

After finishing up in the Infamous games, Sucker Punch turned its attention to something completely different – an open world action game set in 1200s Japan, right at the start of the first Mongol invasion. Later on, an expansion for the game released, continuing the journey beyond the events of the base game.

KitGuru Says: If Ghost of Tsushima is finally coming to PC this year, then I am also hoping that news on a sequel isn't too far behind. We've yet to see anything from Sucker Punch in the PS5 generation and the studio has proven itself capable of fantastic experiences in the past.

Ghost Of Tsushima was one of the biggest surprise hits of 2020. Launching to immediate success, the game has continued to sell well, with the team at Sucker Punch Productions now confirming that two years on, Ghost of Tsushima is almost at 10 million copies sold.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Sucker Punch Productions account said “This weekend marks two years since the release of #GhostOfTsushima! We are blown away by all of the support since then and so grateful for all of you! Thank you to everyone who has played and shared this journey with us!”

Alongside this, the team released an infographic highlighting some of the game’s most impressive statistics, including the fact that since its launch on the 17th of July 2020, Ghost of Tsushima has officially sold 9.73 million copies – an impressive figure for any game, let alone a PlayStation-exclusive brand new IP from a historically under-appreciated studio.

Other interesting stats include the fact that players have engaged in almost 1 Billion standoffs (998.5 million to be precise); 78 million photos have been taken using the game’s impressive photo mode; players have spent a collective 6437.4 years on horseback, and most importantly  75.18 million foxes have been pet.

Ghost of Tsushima quickly became the PS4’s fastest selling first-party original IP debut upon its release. Since then, the studio added new free content; gameplay improvements; released a PS5 Directors Cut which came with an expansion; and even added a co-op multiplayer mode as part of a free update. With such support being shown for Ghost of Tsushima, it is not surprising to see the game performing so well. Hopefully the game hits the big 10 million soon.

For quite some time now we have been hearing a number of leaks from multiple sources claiming that both the Sly Cooper and inFamous franchises are set to be revived. Sucker Punch Productions – the original studio behind both franchises – has now released an official statement squashing these rumours.

In a post published on their website, Sucker Punch Productions discussed the legacy of their older franchises as the studio nears its 25th anniversary. Aside from Ghost of Tsushima, Sucker Punch Productions are most known for creating both the InFamous and Sly Cooper franchises, with the studio revealing:

“As our games continue to grow in scale and complexity, they require the full attention of our studio. With our focus on our current project, we have no plans to revisit inFAMOUS or Sly Cooper right now, and no other studio is currently working on projects related to those franchises either.”

Offering a nugget of hope however, the studio said “These characters are very special and near and dear to our hearts, so while we'd never say never to re-opening those doors down the road, for now there are no inFAMOUS or Sly Cooper games in development.”

It is not uncommon for studios to deny leaks which end up being true, but if what Sucker Punch is saying is true, then fans of both inFamous and Sly Cooper will unfortunately simply have to continue to wait.

After leaving Infamous behind in the early days of the PS4, Sucker Punch turned its attention to Ghost of Tsushima, one of the best open world games to release in the last console generation. Now, it appears that the studio is gearing up for a sequel.

While Sucker Punch has not announced its next project yet, the company is hiring. The job listings state that the team is working on an open world stealth game with a focus on melee combat, a description that fits in very well with Ghost of Tsushima.

The listings are specifically looking for combat designers, and they'll have some big shoes to fill, as the original Ghost of Tsushima had some of the best melee combat I've ever experienced in a video game.

Sucker Punch first released Ghost of Tsushima for PS4 back in 2020 and then released an expansion and a PS5 version in 2021. Rumours claim that the game will eventually land on PC, similarly to God of War, Uncharted, Horizon Zero Dawn and Spider-Man Remastered, but no official announcements have been made yet.

Sucker Punch Productions are now known for developing 2020’s breakout hit Ghost of Tsushima. Prior to this however, the team was best known for working on the InFamous and Sly Cooper franchises. While Sucker Punch is most likely busy working on more Tsushima related content, their previous franchises are said to be making a grand return.

Industry insider AccountNGT recently claimed that the upcoming Square Enix-published PS5 exclusive Forspoken has been internally delayed, with an official announcement likely to be made soon. Despite this, AccountNGT is reporting that:

“Even with some delays for some console exclusives, it should be a great year for PlayStation players, with the announcement and release of some PlayStation IPs that [will make] their return”. These returning IPs are said to include Sucker Punch’s back catalogue of creations, with AccountNGT saying “I can corroborate that a new Sly Cooper and a new Infamous [game] are in development.”

The first Sly game was released all the way back in 2002 with Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus (aka Sly Raccoon). The franchise continued trucking along until 2005 when it took an extended hiatus – returning with Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time in 2013 (though now under the development of Sanzaro Games). Once again following this, the franchise went on hiatus – though it is now seemingly making its return.

Sucker Punch’s shift away from Sly after the 3rd entry was due to them moving on to their second original IP – InFamous. The franchise saw moderate success across three games and two standalone expansions, all of which were released between 2009 and 2014.

With it being almost a decade since the release of the last Sly Cooper and InFamous games, it is exciting to hear that both of these franchises may be returning soon – even if they are not being developed by Sucker Punch Productions.

KitGuru says: What do you think of InFamous and Sly? Which franchise do you prefer? What studio do you want to see work on each of these games? Let us know down below.

One of the things that PlayStation is known best for is its long list of original and critically acclaimed IPs. Unlike Nintendo however, Sony has historically abandoned many of these in pursuit of new IPs roughly every generation. That being said, it appears the company may be going back into its well of characters, as both InFamous and Sly the Racoon are said to be coming back.

This rumour comes via known leaker Shpeshal Nick, who has previously claimed that a Bloodborne sequel, PC port and PS5 remaster are all on the way – while also offering new details on Kojima’s next game.

Nick is now back with another set of rumours, suggesting that with 100% certainty, both the Sly Cooper/Racoon, and InFamous franchises are set to make a return. Both of these IP are highly recognisable, though Sly has not seen a new game since 2013’s Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, with InFamous’ most recent outing being 2014’s InFamous First Light.

Both of these franchises were created by Sucker Punch Productions, but with the studio undoubtedly working on new Ghost of Tsushima-related content, it is likely that both revivals are being handled by different studios. While Sly is no stranger to being handed off to new developers, InFamous has always been developed in-house at Sucker Punch, and so it would be interesting to see what an InFamous game from a different Sony studio would look like.

Regardless, both Sly and InFamous are excellent IPs with huge potential – both franchises of which are overdue for more time in the limelight. The InFamous franchise especially offers great open world sandboxes with fun and unique gameplay mechanics. It is therefore exciting to hear that InFamous and Sly are going to make a grand return.

With the Director’s Cut for Ghost of Tsushima having been released today, Sucker Punch Productions also updated the game to version 2.04. As part of this update, fans have noticed many subtle and significant changes, including entirely new animations, an enemy lock-on and more.

While there are likely to be even more changes with Ghost of Tsushima's 2.04 update, so far fans have noticed that:

  • You can now hide quiver during gameplay
  • Target lock-on during combat has been added as an option
  • Alternate controller layouts have been added for left handed players
  • You can now replay camps and duels
  • New animations have been added, including a new sword sheath, multiple new assassination animations, a new animation when blocking arrows, and likely even more
  • New masks have been added
  • New and updated icons
  • You can now grapple to more objects

These are but a few of the many subtle and not so subtle changes released for Ghost of Tsushima alongside the new PS5 version, meaning that even if you do not have a PS5, there are new things to discover in Ghost of Tsushima. Of course, the bespoke PS5 version does come with its own exclusive content, including real-time cut scenes, Japanese lip syncing, the Iki Island expansion and more.

Ghost of Tsushima: Legends started its life as a free multiplayer addition to the single-player focused action-adventure title. Since then, the game mode has expanded further and further, offering raids and more. Now it seems the team at Sucker Punch are going all in on this mode, as Ghost of Tsushima: Legends is getting a standalone release.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation blog, the Senior Game Designer at Sucker Punch Productions Darren Bridges said “With just two weeks to go until Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut, we wanted to talk about what’s next for Legends. As always, just like all Legends content, every update detailed below will be available at no additional charge to owners of any version of Ghost of Tsushima on PS4 or PS5, with no Director’s Cut purchase required. Players on PS4 and PS5 will also be able to play together seamlessly, and progression in Legends carries over regardless of which console you’re playing on.”

Following this, Bridges revealed the game’s new Rivals Mode, in which “two teams of two will compete to defeat waves of enemies. With each defeated foe, you’ll collect Magatama that you can use to harm the other team. For example, you can spend Magatama on Shades to block your opponents’ purchases, Curses (health drain, exploding bodies, etc), Hwacha fire, and more. Once you’ve spent enough Magatama, you’ll unlock Final Stand waves. Complete these before the opposing team to win!” This mode launches on the 3rd of September.

Launching alongside this is the game’s new Gear Mastery system, and arriving a little bit earlier (20th of August to be specific) are a number of tweaks based on community feedback including changes to Survival mode to shorten the session length and the addition of new weekly Survival Nightmare challenge variants.

Those who are interested in Ghost of Tsushima: Legends but don’t want to invest in the full game can soon purchase Legends on its own for £15.99, which can then be upgraded to include the single player campaign for an additional fee. For all of the intricate changes and additions, the blog post can be found HERE.

Ghost of Tsushima launched last year to high praise and impressive sales, far exceeding developer Sucker Punch Productions' previous efforts commercially. Just under a year after its initial release, it seems as though Ghost of Tsushima may be getting new content, as the ESRB has now leaked what has been called ‘Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut’.

The ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board) has long been a place where – due to the nature of their business – games may leak early. In this case, Ghost of Tsushima: Director’s Cut for both PS4 and PS5 may be on its way soon. While the description itself offers little in the way of explaining what is new in this version of the game, it is possible to make a few educated guesses.

During E3, Hideo Kojima showed off Death Stranding: Director’s Cut. Also a PlayStation Studios game, this enhanced version teased not only new locations and new story content, but whole new mechanics.

With Ghost of Tsushima taking the ‘Director’s Cut’ moniker, it is quite possible that it too will offer a similar level of new content. An expansion for Ghost of Tsushima recently leaked (titled Ghost of Ikishima) and so it is possible that this Director’s Cut would come with this DLC.

Furthermore, as the game has been rated for both PS4 and PS5, it will be interesting to see whether the Director’s Cut will come with even more PS5 enhancements, instead of a simple 60fps patch. With the rumoured PlayStation event not too far away, hopefully we won't have to wait too long to find out.

One of Sony's big launch titles for the PlayStation 5 was none other than Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a smaller, expansion-sized standalone game. Now, it looks like Ghost of Tsushima will be getting something very similar later this year.

According to known insider, Shpeshal_Nick, Sony will be announcing a Ghost of Tsushima “expandalone” game, similar in size to Uncharted Lost Legacy and Spider-Man: Miles Morales. The game is currently known as ‘Ghost of Ikishima'. For those who don't know, Iki Island (Ikishima) is an archipelago in the Tsushima Strait.

With that information in mind, we can expect a smaller open world to explore and a more focused story, possibly centring around a new character. The game is said to be aiming for a 2021 release, so if all of this is accurate, Sony should announce this during its next State of Play stream, currently expected to take place in the first half of July.

Whether or not this game will be PS5-only, or if it will be cross-gen, still remains to be seen.

KitGuru Says: Ghost of Tsushima was an incredible game and from the sounds of it, we'll be getting a reason to revisit it later this year.

Upon its launch in July of 2020, Ghost of Tsushima far exceeded sales expectations becoming PlayStation 4's fastest selling first-party original IP debut. It seems this sales success has continued into 2021, with it being confirmed that Ghost of Tsushima has sold 6.5 million copies in less than 9 months.

As part of the recently announced Ghost of Tsushima film adaptation (which is being directed by the same Director as John Wick – Chad Stahelski), Deadline reported that the game has officially sold over 6.5 million copies since its launch on the 17th of July 2020.

Upon its original release, Ghost of Tsushima sprinted to success, selling 2.4 million units in its first 3 days, making the game the PlayStation 4's fastest selling first-party original IP debut. In November, this figure was updated, revealing that Ghost of Tsushima had sold 5 million copies. Now, just 4 months later, the game has sold a further 1.5 million, bringing the total sales to 6.5 million copies sold.

With 6.5 million copies sold, Ghost of Tsushima has officially outsold the studio’s previous project, 2014’s InFamous: Second Son, which sold 6 million copies by 2019.

With such a strong sales success so quickly into its life, it comes as no surprise that Sony wants to capitalise on the game’s popularity by adapting it to film. Hopefully the adaptation proves to be just as successful as the game.

Ghost of Tsushima took many by surprise when it launched last Summer, offering a beautiful open world and introducing players to the island of Tsushima. While feudal Japan has been a desired destination for many video game players, taking people to Tsushima offered a unique twist – one that resonated with fans. Following the success of the game, it has been announced that two of the game’s lead developers will become official ambassadors for the island.

As reported by VGC, Ghost of Tsushima’s Game Director Nate Fox and Creative Director Jason Connell will become official tourism ambassadors for the island of Tsushima.

In a statement, the mayor of Tsushima, Hiroki Hitakatsu, said “[Fox and Connell] spread the name and history of Tsushima to the whole world in such a wonderful way. Even a lot of Japanese people do not know the history of the Gen-ko period. When it comes to the world, the name and location of Tsushima is literally unknown, so I cannot thank them enough for telling our story with such phenomenal graphics and profound stories.”

This appointment has been awarded as a way to thank the team at Sucker Punch Productions for introducing Tsushima’s history to millions of people, with Hitakatsu saying “I did not appoint them for the purpose of having them do anything in the future. Thanks to the two of them, Sucker Punch Productions, and SIE, I have heard from people all over the world who have learned about Tsushima through their works, and now want to see, know, and go to Tsushima.”

Lastly, it was announced that SIE will be teaming up with the Island of Tsushima to create a tourism campaign “designed to encourage fans to learn more about the island and its key landmarks”. Ghost of Tsushima introduced millions to the rich history of the island of Tsushima, and so it is a ‘feel good’ moment to see the island inhabitants responding so positively.

Ghost of Tsushima surprised many when it released last year, becoming the PS4’s fastest selling original IP debut and selling over 5 million copies to date. Following this success, it was safe to assume that Sucker Punch Productions would work on a sequel, however this has yet to be confirmed. Though still not officially confirmed, a new LinkedIn post has heavily suggested that a sequel is on its way.

Dave Molloy, who serves as the Cinematic Creative Director at Sucker Punch recently updated his LinkedIn profile claiming that he is “Presently working on the Ghost of Tsushima game for Sony PS5” (though this has since been altered slightly). Of course, Ghost of Tsushima was developed for the PS4 and so a PS5 game would suggest that Molloy is referring to a sequel.

This is further evidenced by the timing at which the profile was updated. While Ghost of Tsushima did not receive a major remaster for PS5, the game was updated to run at 60fps on Sony’s new console – with this most likely being the extent of the PS5 update. Molloy’s post meanwhile was updated after the PS5 patch went live, suggesting that this “Ghost of Tsushima game for Sony PS5” is unrelated to the update.

While this is the most concrete evidence so far of a Ghost of Tsushima sequel, back in October, Sucker Punch Productions were advertising job listings for a narrative writer with a “desire to write stories set in feudal Japan” – suggesting that the studio is not done with the Ghost of Tsushima just yet.

Of course, as Ghost of Tsushima is still less than a year old, it is highly likely that any news of a sequel is still years away. That being said, for those who would like to return to the Island of Tsushima, the chances appear to be quite likely.

Ghost of Tsushima surprised many when it saw immediate commercial success following its launch with “more than 2.4 million units sold through globally in its first 3 days of sales”. Since then, the open-world samurai/ninja title has continued to sell well, with the game now having officially sold over 5 million copies, just 4 months after its release.

As reported by The new York Times, Ghost of Tsushima has officially sold over 5 million copies since its release on the 17th of July 2020. This was later confirmed by Hermen Hulst, PlayStation’s Head of Worldwide Studios.

Hulst added further context to this figure however, announcing that Ghost of Tsushima has become the “fastest-selling first party original PS4 game”. This is certainly impressive considering PlayStation has released a number of new IP over the course of the PS4’s life including Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone, Bloodborne, and more.

This success was no doubt aided by the fact that the game’s developers, Sucker Punch Productions, recently added a co-op multiplayer mode, further extending the life of the – originally single player – game. The game’s recently announced 60fps mode on PlayStation 5 will likely add to this number even more, as PlayStation 5 owners pick up the game over the next few months.

With other original IP such as Horizon Zero Dawn selling over 10 million copies and seeing a sequel announced, there is little doubt that Ghost of Tsushuima’s sales success has reassured Sucker Punch that fans would like to see a sequel – and thanks to recent job listings, this might just be the case.

Ghost of Tsushima is just a few months old but it is already clear that this won't be a one-and-done game. The title quickly became one of the fastest selling new IPs in PlayStation history and now, it looks like Sucker Punch is planning a follow-up.

Recently, Sucker Punch posted a new job listing for a narrative writer, specifically requesting someone with a “desire to write stories set in feudal Japan” and with “knowledge of feudal Japanese history”.

So rather than returning to Infamous, or even Sly Cooper, Sucker Punch is focused on its new franchise.

There are no official announcements at this time, but expect to see more Ghost of Tsushima in the next few years.

KitGuru Says: Ghost of Tsushima has been one of my favourite games of the year, so it is exciting to see that Sucker Punch wants to follow up with more stories set in feudal Japan. Did many of you play Ghost of Tsushima? Are you looking forward to a potential sequel?

Sony recently released further details on its backwards compatibility for the PlayStation 5, revealing that over 99% of the PS4’s library will work on the company’s next-gen console. Unsurprisingly, Ghost of Tsushima will be supported on PlayStation 5. In a nice surprise however, the game’s developers have confirmed that Ghost of Tsushima on PS5 will be able to run at 60fps.

Following the release of the (short) list of unsupported PS4 games, Sucker Punch Productions tweeted#GhostOfTsushima will be playable on PS5 on day one via backward compatibility, and you’ll be able to transfer your save from PS4 to pick up where you left off!”

Again, while this does not come as a surprise (it is one of the last first-party PS4 games to have released prior to the launch of next-gen after all), the studio confirmed that “PS5 owners playing with Game Boost will see an extra option to allow frame rates up to 60FPS, and while loading speeds on the PS4 are already great, just wait until you see them on the PS5!”

Game boost is a feature which will allow for a number of PS4 games to see improvements on PS5 thanks mainly to the increase in horsepower, with little required input from developers. While a boost to 60fps is a much-welcomed addition, it’ll be interesting to see whether Sucker Punch has any plans to bring even further improvements such as ray-tracing and bespoke DualSense support to the PS5 version – and whether they will charge for it.

Just over a week after launch, Ghost of Tsushima continues to exceed expectations. Previously we reported that the open-world PS4 exclusive saw stock shortages due to demand in Japan. Now, PlayStation has officially announced that Ghost of Tsushima had the PlayStation 4’s fastest selling first-party original IP debut, selling over 2.4 million copies in 3 days.

Making the announcement on Twitter, PlayStation revealed that “Ghost of Tsushima is now PS4's fastest selling first-party original IP debut with more than 2.4 million units sold through globally in its first 3 days of sales.”

This is extremely impressive and bodes well for the longevity of the game and potential franchise. Ghost of Tsushima had a better debut than 2017’s Horizon Zero Dawn – with the latter having sold over 10 million copies since, spawning a sequel.

While this figure does not reach the heights of other PlayStation 4 exclusives such as The Last of Us Part II (which sold over 4 million copies in 3 days) or God of War (3.1 million copies), Ghost of Tsushima is a new IP, while the other titles had previous entries.

That being said, in Japan, Ghost of Tsushima did manage to outsell these titles, with the open-world samurai action-adventure stealth title having the biggest launch week of any first-party PS4 title.

Sucker Punch Productions have always crafted great titles, and so it's encouraging to see their latest project being received so well. It’ll be interesting to see what the studio has planned next.

Ghost of Tsushima is one of PlayStation biggest titles for 2020. That being said, some expressed concern at how the open-world samurai title would perform in Japan, especially as the game was developed by a US-based studio. It would seem however that Ghost of Tsushima is exceeding expectations in the game’s home setting, as stock shortages have been reported due to its popularity.

In an update on Twitter, the Japanese PlayStation account announced (as translated by Google) that “Ghost of Tsushima has been [more] well received than we expected, and we are out of stock at some stores. Currently, additional production is currently underway, but the download version is also available on the PS Store. Please consider [it instead].”

Ghost of Tsushima released on the 17th of July to a positive reception. In Japan however, the game received a perfect 40/40 from the country’s biggest video game publication, Famitsu – becoming only the third western-developed title to do so (the other two being The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Grand Theft Auto V).

Though complete sales figures aren’t available yet, in the UK boxed sales charts, Ghost of Tsushima beat out last year’s Days Gone’s sales by 7% – though unsurprisingly didn’t come close to the sales success of The Last of Us Part II which sold over 4 million copies in 3 days.

With Ghost of Tsushima being the final first-party PS4 exclusive to release before the launch of the PS5, it’ll be interesting to see just how many copies Sucker Punch Productions’ PS4 swan song manages to sell.

Sucker Punch has officially returned this year with another PS4 exclusive- Ghost of Tsushima. While a story about a samurai in feudal Japan may seem like a shoe-in idea for a PS4 exclusive, Sucker Punch went through a number of ideas before landing on this one. Thanks to some new leaks, we actually have gameplay footage for one such prototype.

The leak shows off a 10-minute vertical slice of a game called ‘Prophecy'. The footage was first shared on 4Chan and was found via the portfolio of a Sucker Punch character artist who was eventually credited in Ghost of Tsushima.

In Prophecy, you were supposed to play as protagonist ‘Abel Tvorah', who was attempting to find a secret chamber and stop a secretive enclave from taking over his home city. Some of the gameplay mechanics you see in the video, such as combat, are very reminiscent of what ended up appearing in Ghost of Tsushima all these years later.

Previously, developers at Sucker Punk have also opened up about other ideas that preceded Tsushima, including a pirate themed game, or something more akin to The Three Musketeers.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: The Prophecy looks like a mix of Uncharted and Assassin's Creed to me. Personally, I'm much more drawn to the unique feudal Japan setting though, so I'm glad Sucker Punch ended up going in that direction. What do you all think of the prototype gameplay shown here? Rumour has it, it dates back as far as 2015.

Ghost of Tsushima is the final major first-party game to release on the PlayStation 4. The open-world action-adventure title takes players to feudal Japan on a quest for revenge. While Ghost of Tsushima has received a great deal of attention thanks to its unique setting, things could have been very different, as the studio has now revealed that it had considered making a pirate game instead.

In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Sucker Punch Productions’ Co-Founder Brian Fleming revealed that “early on, we concluded that we wanted to build a large, open world experience — and one that featured melee combat.  But beyond that we were uncertain. Pirates? Rob Roy? The Three Musketeers? All these were considered — but we kept coming back to feudal Japan and telling the story of a samurai warrior.”

Ultimately, it appears as though Sucker Punch made the right choice, as Ghost of Tsushima was received well by critics, with particular praise being given to its world, visual style, and soundtrack – all of which are byproducts of the Feudal Japan setting.

Sucker Punch has had a diverse history when it comes to games the studio has developed. Since its founding in 1997, the PlayStation first-party studio has worked on the classic stealth platformer Sly Cooper (Sly Racoon in Europe), then followed it up with the inFamous series, which sees players take the role of a super-powered conduit with the ability to play as either a hero or a villain.

The studio has once again taken a different direction with Ghost of Tsushima, offering multiple different play styles in what is most likely the studio’s most mature game yet. With how versatile and diverse Sucker Punch’s games have been, it’ll be interesting to see what they choose to create for their next project, and whether the studio will decide to revisit the pirate game.

Last week, Sony hosted a State of Play which gave fans a deep dive into some of the intricacies surrounding Sucker Punch’s upcoming open-world samurai title, Ghost of Tsushima. Though much was learned, such as the fact that the playable character ‘Jin’ can be guided by the wind, more information was promised for a later date. Now, new information has been revealed such as the fact that the game was inspired by both Zelda and Shadow of the Colossus.

In a recent interview with Julien chieze (and translated by ResetEra member Kaiserstarky), Ghost of Tsushima’s Creative Director, Jason Connell, offered a whole slate of new information regarding the much anticipated PlayStation 4 exclusive. Of note was the fact that both Zelda and Shadow of the Colossus heavily inspired the art direction of the game, with Connell stating that he wanted the world to be as vibrant as possible.

One small criticism that some players had upon watching the most recent State of Play was the fact that many interactable items were highlighted through a pulsating shine effect. Connell has now confirmed that the intensity of the shine can be reduced, creating for a less distracting – and more immersive – experience.

Though the State of Play showed off two combat stances, the game will feature many more, and will be used “to apprehend the different types of enemies”. Speaking of combat, the main weapon that Jin will use will be the Katana – though other various weapons are obtainable. Different armour will also affect Jin’s agility, with heavier armour making infiltrations tougher.

Other small details include the fact that while you can hunt and kill animals, there will be no tangible benefit to doing citing. Outfits can be obtained through multiple means, including simply purchasing them at various villages throughout the world.

Lastly, Ghost of Tsushima will not feature an inFamous-styled karma system. This time, Sucker Punch wished to tell “a human story of someone who is this way and has to evolve into something else, versus transform completely into something else” and so the feature was omitted. Ghost of Tsushima will release on the 17th of July exclusively for the PlayStation 4.

There is little doubt that Ghost of Tsushima is set to be one of 2020’s biggest games. The stealth-action open world PlayStation exclusive recently received an 18-minute deep dive State of Play, where a number of interesting details about Sucker Punch’s ambitious and immersive new IP were revealed – including the fact that you can play the entire game in black and white.

Last night PlayStation hosted a State of Play, an online gameplay showcase focused exclusively on Ghost of Tsushima. The open-world samurai title, which was first revealed at Paris Games Week 2017, has until now remained relatively mysterious. Set to release on the 17th of July, the State of Play showed off the game’s exploration, combat and customisation, among other exciting features.

One of the most notable details revolves around the way in which the player character will traverse the open world. Unlike most open-world titles, which feature heavy use of a mini-map, Ghost of Tsushima will buck the trend in favour of immersion. Players who need a bit of guidance with where to go next can summon a gust of wind which will move in the direction of the current objective. Furthermore, wild animals such as birds and foxes will lead the character to secret locations and points of significance.

Combat-wise, players will be able to adopt the main character – Jin’s – two sides, that of the Ghost and that of the Samurai. Each of these styles will vary the combat greatly, with the Ghost style focusing on stealth, and the way of the Samurai lending to more direct combat with enemies.

Sucker Punch is leaning heavily into RPG mechanics with Ghost of Tsushima. Players can find and equip ‘charms’ which will affect Jin’s stats and offer gameplay alterations. Furthemore, players can mix and match armour pieces, which will offer customisability both in terms of stats and looks.

In other details, Sucker Punch showed off the game’s photo mode, which will offer an in depth number of toggles allowing for players to tweak images and clips in the exact way that they wish. There is no default voice option either, as prior to the game starting, players will be offered the choice to play Ghost of Tsushima with either English or Japanese voices (with English subtitles).

Finally, the studio showed off the game’s ‘Samurai Cinema mode’. In this mode, the entire game shifts to a black and white filter, with added film grain and other post effects, lending the visuals to take on the stylings of classic Japanese samurai films. For players who wish to up the immersion to 11, Samurai Cinema mode will certainly satisfy.

The full 18-minute long State of Play can be found HERE. Ghost of Tsushima will be released exclusively for the PlayStation 4 on the 17th of July 2020.

In the past few months, PlayStation has been relatively quiet. It seems the console manufacturer is finally ready to break its silence however, as alongside the announcement of PlayStation Studios, a State of Play has been announced. Focusing exclusively on Ghost of Tsushima, fans will be given “an extended look at Sucker Punch’s gorgeous open-world epic”. The presentation is set to go live this Thursday, the 14th of May at 9pm BST.

Announced via the PlayStation Blog, Sid Shuman – the director of Social Media at SIE America announced: “just a quick note that we’re finalizing a special episode of State of Play airing this Thursday, May 14 at 9pm BST / 10pm CEST on Twitch and YouTube.”

Shuman stressed the fact that “there won’t be any PS5 news or updates in this episode, just a big, beautiful look at Sucker Punch’s PS4 open-world epic.”

That being said, the presentation will run for roughly 18 minutes and will “be focused entirely on Ghost of Tsushima, coming to PS4 17th July. You’ll get an extended look at new gameplay footage, including exploration, combat and more.”

Ghost of Tsushima was first announced back at Paris Games Week 2017. Since then, the PS4 exclusive was shown off at E3 2018, with two trailers following in December 2019 and March 2020 respectively. In total however, comparatively little has been shown of the upcoming open-world stealth-action title, and so it’ll be interesting to see what new information will be revealed at the State of Play this Thursday at 9pm.

As we near the launch of the next generation of consoles, there are only a handful of AAA games left to be released in the months prior. One of the PlayStation 4’s swan songs is Ghost of Tsushima – an open world action-adventure game with stealth elements set in Feudal Japan. Developed by Sucker Punch Productions, the studio behind the inFamous and Sly Cooper series, Ghost of Tsushima has finally been announced to be releasing on the 26th of June 2020.

Ghost of Tsushima was first unveiled back in October 2017 at Paris Games Week. Since then, very little information was revealed regarding the game, aside from a gameplay demonstration at E3 2018 and another trailer at the 2019 Game Awards. The release date for Ghost of Tsushima was finally announced as part of a story trailer published online late last night, confirming its 26th of June release date.

That’s not all that was announced however. The game’s Special and Collector’s Editions were also revealed. The Special Edition features a Steelbook case; a digital mini art book; various in-game items; a Director’s commentary; and a “hero of Tsushima” skin set. The Collector’s Edition meanwhile, features all of the above but also a samurai PS4 dynamic theme; a 48 page mini art book; a ‘Furoshiki’ wrapping cloth; a ‘Sakai’ mask and stand; a ‘Sashimono’ war banner; and a cloth map of the island of Tsushima. The Special Edition is available for £69.99 while the Collector’s Edition will set you back £159.99.

The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima are potentially the final two first-party PS4 games to be released prior to the launch of the PlayStation 5. With The Last of Us Part II releasing on the 29th of May, and Ghost of Tsushima following just under a month later, it’ll be interesting to see whether these releases play into the strategy of Sony’s PlayStation 5 reveal, and whether Ghost of Tsushima will serve as an admirable swan song to one of the most successful video game consoles of all time. The new trailer for Ghost of Tsushima can be found HERE.
