Travelling around the Underzee in Failbetter Games' Sunless Sea is never a simple matter. There's monsters to avoid, caverns to navigate and the ever present danger of your crew eating one another when supplies run low. But at least you don't have to worry about giant, ray-like creatures that look like they could swallow your ship whole without even noticing.

Something like that makes its presence known in the new dev. video for upcoming update: Zubmariner.

In the Zubmariner expansion of the original top down, explorative roguelike, players will be able to take their surface vessel under the “zee,” surface with a simple upgrade to their vessel. When down below they'll get to explore the ocean depths, finding all sorts of weird and wonderful things. While the floor might keep you safe from anything below though, it leaves you open to what's then above you, like giant, giant monsters.

Although we don't see one directly in the latest developer diary for Zubmariner, we do see its shadow projected onto the ocean floor around the player and it dwarfs his ship. The player in this case doesn't seem too concerned, but does suggest that he won't spend much time around there, perhaps with good reason.

Spend enough time down there, and even the hydrothermal vents can look like eyes in the deep

The rest of the video tends to focus on some of the visual cues that are found when exploring the ocean depths, like bubbles trailing the ship, a stronger light source to help navigate and plankton that can give you an idea of how fast you're going when there are no reference points.

The Zubmariner update is still in an early-alpha state, but is expected to arrive later this year.

KitGuru Says: I need to take another crack at Sunless Sea. I managed to get a second generation in after 20 or so hours and the kid was set up quite nicely with a home and heirlooms. I should have let the map reset though, it's more exciting discovering where everything is.

Failbetter Games' Sunless Sea has been available as an early access title for a while. During that period it's gone through big overhauls of the combat system and has seen the map expand far beyond its initial boundaries. Finally though, it's nearing an official launch, so to celebrate and tempt back captains that have long left the underground ocean behind, Failbetter has released a launch trailer showing off some of the more far flung and forbidden parts of that foreboding body of water.

Of course most of it is inky blackness, with the occasional sea monster or raiding pirate to give you cause for concern, but out their in the deep, there's other things too. And they are watching.

Much like Failbetter's gothic London storytelling universe, Fallen London, Sunless Sea is built around telling tall tales, which means it's a game with lots of reading and decision making. Many of those decisions can get you killed, but like any good roguelike, you'll be able to leave something behind for future generations to use, taking up the mantle of ship-captain once again.

As nightmare inducing as some of Sunless Sea's hidden elements are, you have to check them out, right?

To celebrate the game's launch, Failbetter will be doing a Reddit AMA on the day, as well as streaming live on Twitch at the moment the game releases.

Sunless Sea launches on PC on 6th February at 5:30pm GMT.

KitGuru Says: I had a lot of fun with Sunless Sea when last I played it. That was before the real-time combat change however. Has it been much improved by that switch?

Seeing anything in Sunless Sea is a challenge. You have to have your ships' lonely, single light pointed in the right direction and you need to make sure your mirror skill is high enough or taking pot shots at anything is going to be very difficult. One thing the developers have managed to spot though is the game's release date, marking the end of its long running Early Access period on the 6th February.

Mixing Lovecraftian creepiness with its own Fallen London universe, Failbetter Games Sunless Sea has you travelling around an underground ocean, exploring islands and their inhabitants through deep and engaging text adventures. The stories are concise though and while the interface can be a little confusing to begin with, its deep and engaging. And brutal. Expect to die a lot early on if you have little fear for the inhabitants of the Underzee.

While a little complicated off the bat, the interface ends up being relatively intuitive

The game's come along apace, entering early access in July last year, after a successful Kickstarter campaign in late 2013. Since then major overhauls of the combat and other systems have taken place, expanding the game's playable areas and deepening the story.

While Sunless Sea is set for release at the start of next month, if you pick it up while it's still in Early Access, you'll receive all future updates and DLC for free.

You can pick up Sunless Sea on Steam and the official site (for slightly cheaper) now, or on GoG when it releases.

KitGuru Says: This is a game I had quite a lot of fun with a while back, but wasn't impressed with the combat. I hear it's much improved now so it might be time I went for a dip in the Underzee once again.
