CES is coming up in less than a week and as we've come to expect, there will be a new generation of gaming monitors launching, pushing technologies further with high refresh rates, new designs and more OLED options. Samsung is amongst the first to showcase their new monitors, including three new Odyssey OLED series displays.

At the top of the list we have the new 2024 Odyssey OLED G9, a new version of the massive 49-inch superwide monitor, still sporting 5120×1440 resolution and a 32:9 aspect ratio, alongside an OLED panel with glare-free technology, DisplayHDR True Black, FreeSync Premium Pro, as well as HDMI 2.1 ports and DisplayPort 1.4.

The Odyssey OLED G8 is Samsung's first flat 32-inch OLED monitor, sporting 4K resolution and 240Hz refresh rate for ultra smooth gaming. The Odyssey OLED G6 is a 27-inch 1440p option with a whopping 360Hz refresh rate.

We don't have details on exact availability or pricing yet but we hope to learn more on that front soon.

Philips is back with a new SuperWide display. The new Philips 49B2U5900CH boasts a massive 49-inch display with 32:9 aspect ratio and 5120×1440 resolution, giving tons of screen space for productivity tasks.

The Philips 49B2U5900CH is geared towards productivity, with a USB-C docking station, a pop-up webcam with a Busylight function, enabling professionals to sync with Microsoft Teams so colleagues can quickly tell if there is a team call going on. The webcam also supports Windows Hello, so you can unlock your PC swiftly with a scan of your face.

Several functions make the Philips 49B2U5900CH ideal for work. Naturally, the most obvious benefit here is the large SuperWide display, offering the equivalent of two QHD monitors side by side with no bezels in the way. It also has a KVM switch, so you can manage multiple systems with one keyboard and mouse. The USB-C docking station enables 100W of power delivery too, so you can swiftly charge or power additional devices.

Other key features include DisplayHDR 400 certification, SmartImage technology, and TÜV Rheinland Eyesafe certification. The Philips 49B2U5900CH monitor will be available for purchase from mid-November and with a MSRP of £949.99.

Philips is expanding its gaming monitor portfolio with a new high-end model featuring a 49-inch QD-OLED panel. However, performance isn't all this monitor has to offer. Featuring Evnia's iconic design, the Philips 49M2C8900 has been awarded an iF Design Award and a Red Dot Design Award.

The Philips Evnia 49M2C8900, which boasts a 49-inch ultra-wide QD-OLED curved panel (1800R) with a resolution of 5120×1440, a response time of 0.03ms, and a 240Hz refresh rate, was released this week. The display has a 10-bit colour bit depth and a typical brightness of 250 nits, but it peaks at 1000 nits. With that, it covers 153.1% of the sRGB colour space, 125.2% of the Adobe RGB colour space, 127.4% of the NTSC colour space, and 99% of the DCI-P3 colour space.

The new monitor features VESA DisplayHDR True Black 400 certification and comes factory calibrated with DeltaE < 2 (sRGB). For connectivity, there are two HDMI 2.1 inputs, DisplayPort 1.4, four USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports, a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-B upstream port, a USB-C connector with 90W power delivery and DP Alt Mode, and a headphone jack.

The monitor's enclosure follows a similar design to the latest Evnia monitor, with a sleek design using a silver and white theme. One thing that makes it stand out from its competitors is the 3-sided Ambiglow, a technology used by Philips on TVs that creates a light halo around the monitor based on the colour of the content on the display. Moreover, it features an ergonomic stand that adjusts up to 120mm in height, +/-20 degrees in swivel, and -5 to 15 degrees in tilt.

Like other OLED gaming monitors available today, this one is very pricey, coming in at £1,649.

Philips is expanding its superwide monitor lineup with the new Philips 45B1U6900C, which aims to simplify dual-monitor setups into a single 32:9 display with Double QHD resolution.

The Philips 45B1U6900C has a massive 45-inch panel with 5120×1440 resolution, with 178°/178° viewing angles, DisplayHDR 400 capabilities, and a MultiClient Integrated KVM switch so you can control a dual-PC setup with one monitor and one keyboard/mouse, allowing you to reduce clutter and simplify your setup.

This monitor is primarily designed for professionals. It comes with a USB-C docking hub with RJ45, allowing you to connect a laptop to the monitor with USB-C and gain wired access to the network. The USB-C hub also has 100W power delivery, DisplayPort Alt mode and more. To help users work in almost any ambient light setting, the monitor’s TUV Rheinland Eyesafe RPF 50 certification ensures protection against blue light-induced eyestrain.

The Philips 45B1U6900C is available starting this month, priced at £939.99.

Philips could have just the thing with this new monitor

The post Philips Brilliance 439P9H 43in 32:10 SuperWide Monitor Review first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
Aspect ratios other than 16:9 used to be rather unusual. But now every other monitor we see appears to be on the wide side. Nevertheless, we still don't get many as broad as the Philips Brilliance 439P9H. In fact, we've never seen a screen with precisely this aspect ratio. If you thought 21:9 was stretching your peripheral vision, the 439P9H goes even further, to 32:10. With a 43.4in diagonal and 3,840 x 1,200 native resolution, this is a lot of pixels and a lot of screen.

Phillips 439P9H is essentially the smaller brother to the Philips Brilliance 499P9H, but that has an aspect of 32:9. So it's a little bit taller than it is wide in comparison. It's still a very skinny strip of a screen, however, and the mild 1800R curvature further adds to the sense of immersion as you sit in front of it. But this isn't really a gaming screen. Although the maximum refresh is 100Hz at the native resolution, and there's FreeSync adaptive sync, this is below what many gamers would want now that 144Hz screens are getting much more affordable.

As with most curved screens, a VA panel is used, with the usual characteristics of this technology. The response time is only 4ms grey-to-grey, but brightness is a decent 450cd/m2 and contrast 3,000:1. Philips claims 123 per cent of the sRGB colour gamut, 91 per cent AdobeRGB, and 95 per cent of the movie-oriented DCI-P3. These features allow DisplayHDR 400 certification.

Connectivity is very generous indeed. You get two DisplayPort 1.4 video inputs, one HDMI 2.0b, and two USB-C with video capability. Either one can be used as the upstream for four Type A USB 3.2 ports. There's a headphone output too, and a pair of 5W speakers. You even get a 2Mpixel webcam. Despite the huge width, this screen still offers height, swivel, and tilt adjustment.

At over £800, the 439P9H is hardly the bargain of the century. But you do get a lot of pixels and width for your money, and quite a lot of features as well. Let's find out if this is a case of expanded horizons or “never mind the quality, feel the width”.
