Last month, word spread across the internet that IBM was creating a virtual reality game based on Sword Art Online. While that didn't turn out to be entirely true, the ‘game' is actually just a short demo/prototype, it is still fairly exciting to see. Over 100,000 people applied to try out the Sword Art Online promotional VR demo and just 208 people were selected, with some of them posting images online.

One website, 4gamer, posted a couple of in-game screenshots while other people posted pictures of what the set up looked like.

The Sword Art Online Beginning Project was built by IBM to demonstrate the compute power of its SoftLayer cloud service at an event in Tokyo. Right now, it isn't known if other people will get a chance to try out the demo, or if it will make an appearance at any more events.

KitGuru Says: The Sword Art Online concept is an interesting one and we will likely see it explored further as more VR headsets launch throughout the year.

Last week, the internet exploded with news that IBM was actively sponsoring the development of a virtual reality MMO based on the Sword Art Online anime/manga series. At first, it seemed that this would be a real game launching later this year but now, it looks like that might not be the case at all and the previous news may have just been a huge misunderstanding.

IBM is hosting a marketing event and in order to help promote it, a small prototype experience based on Sword Art Online has been developed specifically to demo at this event. However, a full-on game is not being planned, this demo is actually only intended to show off the power of IBM's new SoftLayer cloud service.

Road to VR was the first outlet to post the correction, pointing out that IBM's Sword Art Online: The Beginning is actually just a 20 minute marketing demo and nothing more as so many other sites suggested. The site also points out that the reason so many news outlets (including ourselves) got it wrong last week was due to the language barrier, alongside some slightly confusing messaging.

So there you have it, IBM isn't making a Sword Art Online MMO, nor are they making a full game. However, with VR set to take off this year, hopefully, someone will eventually.

KitGuru Says: This is pretty disappointing news, especially when you consider how excited people were about the thought of a Sword Art Online MMO built in VR. Hopefully, someone will develop a serious SAO game eventually but IBM isn't a part of it.

Sword Art Online is soon going to be a virtual, reality if IBM has anything to do with it. The longtime technology firm announced that it is sponsoring the development of a VR MMO based around the manga/anime series known as Sword Art Online: The Beginning. It's listed with a 2016 debut date, though details remain very thin on the ground right now.

Welcome to Sword Art. Good luck leaving.

Announced in an entirely conceptual trailer, the game is shown to be in development, with some of the more iconic scenes from the Sword Art universe appearing on dev stations and within design tools. At the end we're shown a person putting on a generic looking VR headset before stepping into an unknown virtual world.

Presumably the Sword Art one. Presumably too, the game is further along in development than we might think, as the IBM website is taking applications over the next couple of weeks for a prototype alpha test set to take place towards the end of March in Tokyo. There are 208 slots open for people to join the trial.

Unfortunately the fact that the prototype test will take place in Tokyo, means it is only open to residents of Japan. You also need to be at least 18 years old and be happy with being photographed and videod during the demo.

When all applications have been accepted by by 4th March, the chosen couple of hundred will be chosen from the applicable by lottery.

KitGuru Says: Heading to a bespoke location for a prototype Sword Art Online? I'm not saying IBM is going to stop people from leaving, but I wonder what it has planned?

If you want to play the upcoming Sword Art Online: Lost Song game set to hit PS Vita and PS3 in a few months time, you'll likely need to import it as it isn't getting released anywhere outside of Asian regions. However, if you're a big fan of the anime or manga, you may well do that, in which case you'll want to know what the gameplay is like before you put money down on the game and its import costs, so these videos should come in handy.

The first one shows off what party composition and basic movement are like. Although the video shows you playing as Kirito, you're accompanied by both Asuna and Leafa and there are other characters you'll be able to play as as well, marking a first for the series.

Players can run around the relatively sparse looking work, but since this game takes place in ALfheim Online, you'll want to utilise your wings to fly around the map as traversing it is far quicker that way.

In this second video, you can see what combat is like the in game, with dodge mechanics, basic and special attacks and a variety of weapons and attack patterns to utilise. Players can also use the series' versatile magic, with a variety of buffs, debuffs and offensive spells at your disposal.

Sword Art Online: Lost Song is set for release in Japan on PS3 and Vita on 26th March. It will hit other Asian territories – with Chinese and English versions of the game – in the following weeks. Currently a Western release isn't planned.

KitGuru Says: Although the game still looks and plays far better than that early VR demo of Sword Art Online we saw, nothing looks particularly exciting with this demonstration. Combat seems slow and pretty safe. I'm not sure we even see our protagonists take a single hit.

If you have an Oculus Rift DK2 headset, you can do something that thousands of digital characters never could: visit Sword Art Online and then leave, without dying. It might be a little nerve racking putting on your headset to watch the bootup sequence and character login portion of the experience, but I can assure, it's safe.

In-fact, if anything it's a little boring. There's very little to this ‘experience,' at the moment, but fans of the show may get a kick out of the handful of references in it. There's also a small environment to explore, though if you've used the Rift before it isn't anything that will blow you away.

swordart

This is still a very early stages project and is made as more of a tribute to the game than anything else, but you can open up your inventory and the soundtrack will be familiar to anyone that's watched the show.

Considering Oculus once stated that it wanted to create an MMO that over a billion players took part in, the show itself isn't' actually that far fetched. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your view) the technology to tap into our brains quite as much as the Nerve Gear is still a long way off, but still, we're on the right track.

For those wanting to try this demo out, you can download it for free from Oculus Share.

KitGuru Says: Do you guys think we're only a few decades away from a Sword Art Online-like scenario? Where people get lost in virtual worlds?
