Synology's entry-level single drive NAS, the DiskStation DS115j, has been soldiering on for quite some time but now a new entry-level single disk model has arrived, the DiskStation DS119j. It sports an updated 64-bit processor, has a hardware encryption engine built in and costs less than £100.

The processor in the new DiskStation 119j is a step up from the one in the DS115j. The 32-bit Marvel Armada 370 SOC that powered the DS115j has been replaced by a 64-bit dual core Marvell Armada 3700 88F3720, clocked at the same speed as the 370 – 800MHz. The Armada 3700 also has a hardware encryption engine built in. The DS119j comes with 256MB of memory as standard and if feel you need a bit more poke from the memory department, sadly you are out of luck as you can't add to the system's memory.

The DiskStation DS119j combines frugal power demands – 5.01W in HDD hibernation and just 10.04W when fully active – with low noise emissions when it's hard at work.

The last member of Synology's DiskStation Plus series of NAS drives we looked at was the 4-bay DS916+. This time we have the more business orientated DiskStation DS1517+, a quad core powered 5-bay NAS which has been designed to handle data intensive tasks such as on-the-fly encryption in the Workgroup & SMD market segments.

Synology's Plus series of NAS incorporates 2-bay to 12-bay desktop tower designs as well as 4-bay and 12-bay rack mounted units.

At the heart of the DS1517+ is an Intel Atom C2538 CPU running at 2.4GHz. The C2538 is a 22nm quad core processor with 2MB of cache and a TDP of 15W.  Memory wise the DS1517+ comes pre-installed with either 2GB or 8GB of DDR3 and it was the latter version that Synology supplied for this review. Should you require more memory, the DS1517+ supports up to 16GB of memory via two SO-DIMM slots. There also four Gigabit Ethernet Ports that support Link Aggregation for faster network connections and failure protection.

Synology has also built in a degree of future proofing into the DS1517+ in the shape of a PCIe slot. This Gen 2 x8 slot (x4 link speed) PCIe slot currently supports Synology's M2D17 dual M.2 SATA adapter card or a 10GbE NIC.

Specifications

  • Intel Atom 2.4GHz CPU
  • 8GB Memory.
  • AES-NI hardware-accelerated encryption.
  • PCIe slot.
  • 4 Gigabit Ethernet Ports.

Most famous for its affordable home/small business solutions, Synology presented a certain amount of balance at Computex recently. For ever cool unit that looks at home on your desktop, Synology also had a fully-populated monster on display. KitGuru tried to remember the last time we saw 180 hard drives in the same place at the same time.

When we met with Vincent Alliaga, Synology marketing guru, he was absolutely surrounded by cool looking kit.

We'll take a look at the ‘regular stuff' in a follow up article. Let's start with the big units.

Synology-Advanced-High-Availability-RS18015xs-RX1215-sas-KitGuru-Computex

“Synology RS18015xs+ stands out in the Data Storage category by providing a reliable and superior-performance NAS solution for enterprises seeking uninterrupted service with comprehensive business applications”, Vincent told us. “The RS18015xs+ features Advanced High Availability solution, offering automatic cluster server failover to ensure maximum system uptime. All key components of RS18015xs+ are redundant, including the power supply units, the SAS expanders and LAN ports. Running the exclusive DiskStation Manager operating system, the RS18015xs+ offers advanced virtualization support and all-round data protection”.

Impressive stuff.

That's a little more power and technology than we're used to seeing Synology's traditional range.

It seems to have been appreciated by the Computex organisers – who gave it a ‘Best Choice' award for 2014.

Next, Vincent showed us his RackStation RS3614xs – alongside an RS2414+ NAS server.

“With Synology's Advanced High Availability system, two servers share the same ‘heartbeat' – a signal that pulses through and sets the tempo for work”, Vincent explained. “The moment that heartbeat isn't detected, then the combined system will failover automatically to the passive server. With access to a common store of up to 180TB  of hard drive storage across 36 drives, this offers the kind of continuity that serious business needs. That's what makes the Synology RackStation RS3614xs so special”.

KitGuru says: While the revenues and profit margins will attract companies toward the high-end, reputation is everything when it comes to serious storage. Synology's name carries a lot of cache at the small business end of the market, time will tell if that positivity can translate up the food chain.

Let us know what you think about serious storage over on Facebook.

KitGuru has reviewed many NAS systems in the last year and we have covered most of the previous range from Synology. Today we are looking at the new flagship product aimed at the small and medium sized business market. With support for up to 15 drives via additional Synology DX510 units and class leading read and write performance this looks on paper to be an outstanding addition to their range …. but can it deliver?

Firstly to stop any confusion, lets address the Synology naming conventions as it can be rather confusing for a newcomer.

“+” series = performance range.
standard series (no digit) = mixture of performance and storage.
“j” series = entry level consumer, concerned about capacity but not performance.

DS = Diskstation
First Digit = number of bays
Second numbers = year for the release

Therefore we can see that the DS1511+ is a member of the performance series, it can support up to 15 drive bays and was created for the year 2011.

Product Highlights.

  • Windows® ADS and ACL support
  • iSCSI Support as Virtualization Solution
  • Scale up to 15 Drives with Synology DX5102
  • Expandable RAM Size (up to 3GB)
  • 2 LAN with Failover and Link Aggregation Support
  • Hot-swappable Hard Drive Design

KitGuru spent the weekend at Newbury Racecourse attending the UK's largest LAN gaming event, Insomnia 40 (i40).  Being gurus of kit, we were mostly interested in the hardware on show from the numerous exhibitors.

First of all we had a look at Immacula's stand, displaying products from Alienbags, SteelSeries, Synology and Zotac.  They had a few exciting new products on show from SteelSeries with a whole host of existing products from all four companies.

The Spectrum 4xb and 5xb headsets are the latest in SteelSeries' range and are designed for use with the Xbox 360.  Both feature retractable unidirectional microphones for use with in-game chat and use the Spectrum AudioMixer which allows control of microphone and headphone volumes independently in-game.  The Spectrum AudioMixer can also be purchased seperately which allows any 3.5mm headphones and microphones to be used with your Xbox 360.

The 5xb is similar to the 7H headset (review coming shortly) as it can be dismantled into three pieces for easy portability.  The durability of the cable and microphone was demonstrated to us by some serious yanking on the cable and microphone which stayed firmly in place with no damage.  We look forward to reviewing these headsets fully sometime in the future.

SteelSeries also had their new Shift keyboard on display which appears to be very similar to their existing Zboard, featuring interchangeable keysets.  We also had a quick look at the Siberia Neckband headset which is fully iPhone compatible.

We were lucky enough to get our hands on a limited edition orange Siberia V2 headset which is similar in design to the red one we reviewed a while back.  We have to say the orange finish looks even better in the flesh than it does in the photos and is our favourite colour scheme yet for this headset.  The availability of this is very limited as there are only ten in the country so if you want one then you'll need to be quick!

Zotac had a variety of products on display including the GeForce 480 AMP! graphics card and H55 ITX Motherboard.  The main feature of their sand however, was a competition to win a Zbox mini-PC which required entrants to assemble it in the quickest time.  We were shown by a Zotac representative how it could be assembled in under 20 seconds!  This included installation of the hard drive, RAM and screwing the side cover in place!

Synology were showcasing their latest NAS management software, version 3.0 (beta). We were given a brief insight into its new features, the most notable of which is multitasking.  They have also created an Andriod app (similar to the existing iPhone app) which allows access to some features of the drive from anywhere in the world.  This includes IP camera control using finger gestures.  Check out our review of the Synology DS710+ NAS Server.
