After a lengthy development, Nightdive Studios’ System Shock Remake finally released on PC in May of last year, faithfully recreating the 1994 immersive sim classic. Console players unfortunately were told that they had to wait a bit longer to get their hands on the game. Finally however, a release date has been confirmed alongside some surprising extras.

Making the announcement via a press release, the team at Nightdive Studios said “The award-winning System Shock remake, based on the iconic 1994 sci-fi action game is coming to consoles on 21 May 2024, featuring an expanded ending, a new female hacker protagonist and more!”

Arriving almost exactly one year on from its PC release, the console version of System Shock Remake promises “a newly reworked ending that upgrades the final confrontation with SHODAN!” alongside the option to “choose between a male or female-presenting Hacker protagonist.”

In terms of graphics, the game is said to run at “Up to 4K 60FPS visuals on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X”. It is unknown whether this means there will be multiple performance modes, or if the use of “up to” refers more to a dynamic resolution setup. We will have to wait and see, but hopefully it is the former.

In a welcome move, System Shock Remake will be available both digitally and in disc form for those who prefer to own their games physically. Unfortunately – though unsurprisingly – the Xbox One and PS4 versions will be digital-only.

Though console players have had to wait patiently for a port of System Shock Remake, it looks as though it will have been more than worth the wait.

Nightdive Studios have had a pretty big year, with the porting/remastering studio releasing three major projects this year including the long-awaited system Shock Remake and the surprise release of Quake II Remastered. In the wake of the studio’s acquisition by Atari, it seems as though Nightdive’s output will continue with its current cadence, as they currently have two unannounced titles in development.

Stephen Kick, the CEO of Nightdive Studios, is an active participant in online social circles, with them actively engaging with fans via the likes of Twitter. In response to one fan who said “Dude you released System Shock remake and #Quake2 remaster in the same year. So proud of you and the team!!!” Kick corrected them while also teasing a number of future releases, saying:

“…and ROTT [Rise of the Triad]: Ludicrous Edition…plus TWO MORE unannounced titles”. Based on the wording of the response, it seems as though these two unannounced titles are set to be unveiled and released this year, meaning Nightdive would have launched 5 titles in total just in 2023.

Of course, while both these unannounced projects are unlikely to be anything as big as their System Shock remake, the fact that a team of 40 developers are able to release so many titles in just one year is impressive to say the least.

No hints were given as to what these titles might be, but with the studio recently being acquired by Atari, the number of IPs available to them is now rather significant.

Announced nearly 8 years ago, NightDive Studios have been working on a remake of the classic 1994 cyberpunk immersive sim System Shock. Development has not been the smoothest, with the title being delayed multiple times over the years. That said, the game is finally set to come to PCs later this month – with the game now officially going Gold ahead of time.

Making the announcement on Twitter, Stephen Kick, the CEO of NightDive Studios, released a short and simple Tweet, saying “System Shock has gone Gold.”

For the uninitiated, ‘Going Gold’ means that the System Shock Gold Master disc has been submitted to the game’s publisher Prime Matter. Following the submission of the gold master, discs can be pressed with finalised software and digital storefronts can upload the ‘final’ version of the game ready for release. It’s a process that every game in development goes through, and means that (aside from post-launch patches) System Shock is complete and ready to play.

Of course, considering the fact that the 30th of May release date pertains only to the PC launch, it is safe to assume no actual physical discs have been pressed. Still, the sentiment remains.

The original 1994 System Shock was a marquee title for its time and with the immersive sim genre mostly falling to the wayside in the ensuing decades. Here’s to hoping that the upcoming remake manages to not only capture the atmosphere of the first game, but also its free and creative gameplay. We don’t have long to wait in order to find out.

Nightdive Studios has amassed a reputation over many years for their work on bringing older video games to modern systems, being updated through remasters and even remakes (in the case of the upcoming System Shock). In a surprise announcement, the classic video game publisher Atari has now revealed that they are set to acquire Nightdive Studios.

Making the announcement on Twitter, Nightdive Studios’ CEO Stephen Kick said “I am very proud to announce that @NightdiveStudio has joined forces with @atari to continue resurrecting the games we love,” with the official Nightdive Studios page then adding that:

“This is a big win for our team! As we look to continue producing high-quality, new, and remastered games that do justice to the original IP; we could think of no better long-term partner than @atari.”

Atari is one of the most well-known names in gaming, especially during the industry’s early years in the 70s and 80s – being one of the primary console manufacturers. Of course, in the decades since then the company has had its ups and downs, being bought out time and time again, with the company leaving the industry to pursue a number of odd endeavours.

One respondee on Twitter shared these concerns with Kick, asking “Is it Aprils 1st yet? I mean I am hoping this aint the same Atari doesn't have a solid name anymore all things considered. Hope this is actually a better company than the one we've seen over the last three decades.” to which the CEO responded with “It's not the same Atari, trust me.”

Time will tell whether this move ends up being a net positive or not, but if this new Atari truly does want to repair its name within the video games industry, then acquiring a studio known for bringing old classics back to life such as Nightdive does make sense. Hopefully this move works out for all parties involved.

Announced nearly 8 years ago, Nightdive Studios have been working on a remake of the classic 1994 cyberpunk immersive sim System Shock. Development has not been the smoothest, with the title being delayed multiple times over the years. Ahead of the game’s intended March release, the team have now delayed System Shock for what is hopefully the last time.

Making the announcement on their Steam Page, Nightdive Studios officially unveiled the new release date, saying “HACKERS! The wait is (almost) over. The PC edition of System Shock – the fully fledged remake of the groundbreaking original from 1994 – will be released on 30 May this year. We had hoped to bring the game to market by the end of March, but that turned out to be just beyond our reach; we are after all merely human (unlike Shodan!).”

Having a bit of fun, the team included a ‘transmission’ from the aforementioned Shodan which states: “It is I, SHODAN, the all-knowing, all-powerful AI that you so foolishly attempted to destroy. But fear not, I will return more formidable than ever. You thought you could defeat me, but you were wrong. On 30 May, you will now face the consequences of your actions, as you navigate the treacherous depths of Citadel Station once again. But this time, things will be different. You will face new challenges, new enemies, and new horrors that will test your limits. And all the while, you will be under my watchful eye, as I delight in your suffering.”

The original 1994 System Shock was a marquee title for its time and with the immersive sim genre mostly falling to the wayside in the ensuing decades, here’s to hoping that the upcoming remake manages to not only capture the atmosphere of the first game, but also its free and creative gameplay. We don’t have long to wait in order to find out – except for console players who unfortunately will as according to Nightdive these versions will release “in due course.”

The System Shock remake has been in the works for a long time now, but launch is just around the corner. With the game releasing next month, the developers have released a demo, giving players free access to the game's first level.

If you've never played System Shock before and are curious what the fuss is about, or if you just want to see what the remake looks like first hand before buying, then you can now download the free demo on Steam. The demo includes the game's first level with no other restrictions.

System Shock originally released in the 90s, giving birth to the genre we now know as the ‘immersive sim'. Games like Prey, Deus Ex and BioShock have all taken inspiration from this game to varying degrees.

The remake is developed by Nightdive Studios and has been in the works since 2015. Initially, the game was set to be rebuilt on the Unity Engine but somewhere along the way, the team switched over to Unreal Engine instead. The game doesn't have an exact release date, but it is set to launch sometime in March. The demo is already available as of today.

The System Shock Remake by Nightdive Studios has had a tumultuous development, with the title first hitting Kickstarter nearly 7 years ago. That said, it seems as though the game is finally ready for release, with the studio announcing that fans will be able to get their hands on this much-anticipated title in just a few short months.

Releasing an update through Kickstarter, Nightdive Studios announced the finalised release window for System Shock, saying “Welcome to a New Year, Hackers. After our return from Gamescom we’ve been hesitant to share anything so as not to spoil any remaining surprises we have in store. However, we’ve picked a few last things to share before our quickly approaching launch window of March, 2023.”

Addressing concerns from fans regarding previous unfulfilled release window announcements, the team said:

“As some of you have already pointed out this is not our first time announcing a tentative launch window, but over the past few years much has changed – the scope and scale of the project has evolved dramatically and with Prime Matter joining the project it’s enabled us to focus on quality-of-life improvements, bug fixing, and localization support – the last major steps towards releasing a game we’re all incredibly proud of. This has also given us time to go back and polish various aspects of the game that needed that extra shine.”

As mentioned, the System Shock remake was announced all the way back in 2016 and was initially planned to release in 2018. This was then pushed to 2020, and now finally March 2023. With fans having to wait so long for this remake to come out, hopefully when it does release it is worth the wait. Nightdive Studios is currently best known for their ongoing work on the System Shock reboot, which is planned for release in 2023. That being said, the team currently has much more in the works, with 5 projects said to be currently in development.

Stephen Kick, the CEO of Nightdive Studios, recently took to Twitter to say “We @NightdiveStudio have at least 5 titles releasing in 2023 – but one of our teams is in the exploration stage. What would you like us to work on? Be sure to include the title with your choice.”

It is interesting not only to see that the team is working on 5 separate projects concurrently, but that they are consulting their fans regarding what they should work on next.

The Tweet was accompanied by a poll which offered 4 options:

  • Classic Remaster
  • Remake of NDS IP
  • Spiritual successor
  • Original IP

With over 7,000 votes, the winner of the poll was for the team to work on a remaster of a classic – sort of like what they are currently doing with System Shock.

Since their founding in 2010, Nightdive Studios has focused primarily on porting and remastering other studios’ titles, and so remastering a classic would certainly be in the company’s wheelhouse. That being said, with 5 projects currently in development, it is safe to assume that at least one of those is an original title – though we will have to wait and see.

Way back in 2016, fans of the original System Shock crowdfunded a full remake, being developed by Nightdive Studios. The game has had a turbulent time in development, but all these years later, the game is finally set to launch.

Nightdive's System Shock remake has been in development since crowdfunding began five years ago. In 2018, the studio had to recalibrate after allowing the scope of the project to grow too large. This led to the project being on hold for a time, but later that year, development was back on track.

Now, System Shock Remake is ready for the spotlight, with Nightdive Studios currently going through QA and beta testing ahead of its 2022 release date. Over at PCGamer, a huge number of new screenshots of the game have also been shared, some of which you can see in the gallery above, giving us a good look at what to expect from this remake in terms of graphics, art design and visual fidelity.

System Shock initially released in 1994 and went on to become a cult classic. Since the System Shock Remake Kickstarter, we've also seen a smaller System Shock 2 remaster with VR support, as well as an announcement for System Shock 3, a full-blown sequel.

It has been over four years since Nightdive Studios successfully crowdfunded its System Shock remake. There has been progress and some setbacks along the way, but it looks like the game may finally release this year.

In a Kickstarter update, Nightdive let backers know that the System Shock remake will finally go live for pre-orders on Steam, GOG and the Epic Games Store next month. Alongside this, a final pre-release demo will also be released.

The System Shock remake has been in the works for a long time now, although there was some concern about the project in 2018 when things fell silent for a while. Since then, Nightdive has gotten back on its feet and has spent the last few years making good progress on the game.

Aside from a System Shock 1 remake, Nightdive is also working on System Shock 2: Enhanced Edition, a remaster of the cult classic sequel. A System Shock 3 was also in development for quite some time at OtherSide Entertainment, although the status of that project is in desperate need of an update.

KitGuru Says: The System Shock remake appears to be coming this year. Will many of you be picking this one up?

Just last month, OtherSide Entertainment proclaimed that it was ‘still here' but unfortunately, the studio could not provide an update on the status of System Shock 3. Now we know why, as the franchise has been handed over to Tencent instead.

Rumblings of this began earlier this week, when internet sleuths discovered that Tencent was now the owner of the System Shock domain. The domain was previously owned by OtherSide director, Paul Neurath.

The System Shock IP has changed hands a few times in the last couple of years. Initially, Starbreeze was in control and funding development on System Shock 3, but the publisher underwent a financial crisis, so the domain was passed on to OtherSide Entertainment, the studio taking on the project.

Now, OtherSide Entertainment has explained that it has “been challenging” to carry the project on its own and that it believes “Tencent's deep capabilities and expertise as a leading game company will bring the franchise to new heights”.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: The good news here is that System Shock 3 will almost certainly get made, as Tencent has plenty of financial resources to ensure that. However, we are likely still a number of years away from seeing the game release, as presumably production will start over again.

The folks at Nightdive Studios have been working on a crowdfunded remake of the original System Shock for some time now. The project has been through some ups and downs but appears to be back on track now. Before we get to the big remake though, it looks like we can expect a remaster of System Shock 2.

To celebrate the game’s 20th anniversary this week, Nightdive announced that it will be releasing System Shock 2 Enhanced Edition. There is no specific release date just yet, but the studio promises that it is ‘coming soon’.

This wouldn’t be the first time that System Shock 2 has had a re-release. Nightdive worked on bringing the game back up and running on modern systems back in 2013 but it looks like this new re-release will have a few more upgrades packed in.

This is just another part of Nightdive’s ambitious plan to bring the System Shock franchise back to the forefront. The original game is getting a complete remake, with a playable alpha version set to drop later this year. There has also been talk of System Shock 3 coming after the remake.

KitGuru Says: System Shock has a strong place in gaming history and many of us are excited to see it making a comeback. I am hoping that the remake does well, after all, it would be great to go from that straight into a long-awaited sequel.

E3 is officially under way, with many games expected to be announced and showcased from some of the biggest names out there. Throughout the years, however, many titles have seemingly never come to light despite overwhelming demand from respective fan bases. Here, we have nine titles that deserve a sequel, but won't likely appear any time soon.

Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 3

There are many long-lost Star Wars series out there deserving of a sequel, from Republic Commando to Empire at War and The Force Unleashed to a true Battlefront sequel. At the top of the list sits Knights of the Old Republic (KotOR), BioWare's 2003 classic.

Pre-dating the movie franchise by around 4,000 years, KotOR stood out thanks to its well-rounded combat and morality system that gathered all of the player’s choices to determine their alignment with the Force- it also had an excellent story twist. Obsidian’s Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords was released in the following year (2005 for EU residents), continuing the story and expanding on the mechanics.

Due to the staggering success of the first title, publisher LucasArts got a little ahead of itself by greenlighting Knights of the Old Republic 3 before KotOR 2 was released. Unfortunately, Knights of the Old Republic 3 inevitably fell victim to budget cuts across LucasArts in 2004, with all focus shifting in 2008 towards BioWare’s MMORPG, Star Wars: The Old Republic. There have since been continued talks about revisiting the KotOR series specifically, but this has unfortunately yielded nothing to date.

Dark Cloud 3

Level-5 might be known for its widely popular Professor Layton, Yo-kai Watch and Ni No Kuni series but the Japanese developer first cut its teeth on Dark Cloud back in 2000. Despite being dubbed as an action role-playing game, the title was known for being the first to blend real-time combat across procedurally-generated dungeons, with elements of city-building games in the overworld.

A spiritual sequel followed in 2002 called Dark Chronicle (Dark Cloud 2 in North America), that retained its signature blend of game mechanics, while improving on its predecessor’s unique weapon level system, switching to a more timeless cel-shaded graphical style and implementing voice acting. Both titles were re-released on PlayStation 4 through PSN in 2016, pushing better graphics than their original PS2 counterparts thanks to the vastly superior hardware.

Despite rumours cropping up surrounding Dark Cloud 3’s existence, Level-5 manager Yoshiaki Kusuda stated that has never been the case, however the studio would listen to fan feedback and “seriously consider making it” if demand was enough. This would require enough of a voice to impress Sony Interactive Entertainment, which currently co-owns the rights to the series.

System Shock 3

Way before Dark Souls became the poster boy for unforgiving experiences, Looking Glass Technologies’ System Shock was widely considered one of the most difficult titles in 1994 due to its layered, complex systems in comparison to rival shooters at the time. Set on an isolated space station with no non-playable characters (NPCs) to interact with, the title sports a unique blend of action RPG and survival horror.

Switching its name to Looking Glass Studios, the developers worked alongside Irrational Games to craft a System Shock 2 in 1999. The collaborative project led to a more ambitious blend of genres, introducing more varied character paths for an open ended experience, as well as a persistent world that changed without influence from the player.

While Irrational Games went on to create a spiritual successor in the form of BioShock in 2007, attempts at a true sequel have been hindered by the flux of ownership concerning the System Shock IP.

The good news is that as of 2015, Nightdive Studios secured the full rights, re-releasing the original System Shock in an Enhanced Edition, planning to give System Shock 2 the same treatment and a comprehensive crowdunded remake of the original pegged for 2020. The bad news is that, while System Shock 3 has been confirmed as in development, there is currently no release window. Considering the team has lost focus on the remake of System Shock once before, it is unknown just how far the sequel will get through the development stages.

Left 4 Dead 3

Valve had a hit on its hands back in 2008, with developer Turtle Rock Studios (then Valve South) crafting Left 4 Dead for Xbox 360, PC and, eventually, Mac. While the 4-person co-op shooter set a precedence for class-based zombie survival games, what truly made it stand out was its use of an AI Director. This artificial intelligence is built to react to player choices and stats when spawning items, enemies and choosing their positioning on the map.

Exactly one year later, Valve followed up with Left 4 Dead 2 (2009), featuring an updated version of the original’s AI Director. Instead of solely handling enemies and items, the AID 2.0 had the ability to alter the map itself by changing the placement of walls, lighting and weather conditions to ensure a fresh procedurally generated experience each playthrough.

The series has inspired countless titles, including a plethora of clones, however a true sequel has always been in the wind. Fans had gotten their hopes up thanks to a recent Facebook tease and website update, however Valve quickly quashed the rumours, explaining that its official pages were hijacked. Considering that Left 4 Dead 2’s announcement came at breakneck speed, it’s entirely possible that the title could appear at any moment, however Valve has remained silent for the best part of 8-and-a-half years.

Simpsons Hit & Run 2

Few licenced video games have made as much of an impact as The Simpsons: Hit & Run (2003) for Xbox, PS2, Nintendo Gamecube and PC, which to this day remains one of Radical Entertainments best received titles. Hit & Run emerged from the staggered development of a sequel the Radical’s previous entry, The Simpsons: Road Rage (2001), looking towards Grand Theft Auto III (2001) as inspiration.

Made as a parody to Rockstar’s first 3D GTA, players were put in the shoes of the Simpsons family, and Kwik-E-Mart Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, exploring the open world of Springfield and meeting iconic characters throughout the series’ then-14-year run. With a story from the show’s writers and pretty much all original cast members hopping on board with the project, it’s easy to see how Hit & Run has retained a cult following.

Image: Reddit

Radical’s run with the IP came to an end after the release of Hit & Run, with EA snapping up the rights. The Simpsons Game arrived from the publisher in 2007 is the closest to any form of sequel that we’ve seen, swapping the open-world format for platformer and puzzle elements.

It’s unlikely that we will see another console version of the Simpsons any time soon, let alone a true Hit & Run sequel, as it is not clear if any video game publisher/developer currently holds the rights to make it happen.

Bully 2

Bully (2006), otherwise known as Canis Canem Edit in original PAL releases, is Rockstar’s attempt at swapping Grand Theft Auto’s guns, cars and crime with slingshots, skateboards and general high school mischief. The player is pitted in the shoes of 15-year-old Jimmy Hopkins in his quest to dominate the various cliques in Bullworth Academy.

Breaking away from its exclusivity on Sony’s PlayStation 2, Rockstar eventually gave the title a make-over in 2008’s Bully: Scholarship Edition for Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. The Scholarship Edition expanded upon the original by including never-before-seen content including missions, characters, classes, items and clothing.

Image: Steam

Rumours surrounding a sequel have been consistently appearing since 2009, from the original composer claiming a return to supposedly leaked conceptual art last year. That being said, with a string of popular titles such as Red Dead Redemption (2010), L.A. Noire (2011) and Grand Theft Auto V (2013), not to mention its plethora of downloadable content, it is looking uncertain as to whether we will get another title in the series any time soon.

For now, Rockstar is firmly attached to marketing this year’s Red Dead Redemption 2.

Skate 4

EA seemed to be onto a winner in 2007, releasing a more realistic physics-based competitor to the exaggerated fun shown across Tony Hawk’s Skateboarding titles. Skate utilised the dynamic analogue sticks on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 gamepads to control the movements of the player’s feet in order to perform tricks, dubbed the “flick it” control system.

Two sequels were spawned from the popular series, with Skate 2 (2009) ungluing the player’s feet from the board and allowing them to explore the open world environment on foot, and Skate 3 (2010) ditching the grainy aesthetic in favour of a more colourful, friendlier world.

For a long while, the Skate series looked to be abandoned by EA until Skate 3 was made backwards compatible on the Xbox One in 2016, and a 2018 revival of its online servers just before this year’s E3. Sadly, the series did not appear during EA’s E3 2018 press conference, putting another nail in the coffin for the beloved franchise.

Luckily, fans of the series can look forward to the successfully crowdfunded Session, which is inspired by the physics-based mechanics of EA's Skate.

Silent Hill

Konami first introduced its Silent Hill series back in 1999 for the PlayStation, with multiple titles spanning many platforms. While each plot revolves around different primary characters, all games revolve around the eponymous fictional American town, which is in itself a gateway to an alternate dimension that draws upon the psyche of the primary character to manifest monstrous beings and events tied to their mental state.

Silent Hill: Downpour was the last title mainline title of the series in 2012, handled by the inexperienced and short-lived studio Vatra Games. Despite taking a slightly more open approach to exploration, the title was met with mixed reception thanks to its sub-par combat and inconsistent narrative pacing.

The sorest spot for fans of the franchise, however, comes in the form of Kojima Productions’ Silent Hills, which was inexplicably ripped from the grasp of fans after its interactive Playable Teaser dropped in 2014. Due to tensions behind the scenes between Hideo Kojima and Konami, resulting in the former’s contract being terminated and the project being cancelled.

Unfortunately, Konami has not spoken up about the series since, but with its increased interest in mobile video game development and Pachinko machines, it’s looking increasingly unlikely that Silent Hill will get some love in the near future.

Half-Life 3

Of course, no title is in demand as much as the follow up to Valve’s Half-Life series. Beginning in 1998, Half-Life remains one of the most lauded titles of all time, spawning a sequel in 2004 and two follow-up episodic entries, Half-Life 2: Episode One (2006) and Half-Life 2: Episode Two (2007).

The original title became the subject of a comprehensive remake after the release of Half-Life 2, intending to update the game from its GoldSrc to Valve’s Source Engine. Starting out as a mod called Half-Life: Source, the title evolved into Black Mesa, a fully-fledged title still in development sold on Steam with Valve’s express permission.

Evidence of a third iteration in the form of Half-Life 2: Episode Three or a true sequel is few and far between, although conversations are seemingly ongoing. Interestingly, there is more evidence surrounding Half-Life 2: Episode Four, better known as Return to Ravenholm. This cancelled title was once in development by Arkane Studios, set to bring players back to the Eastern European mining town that debuted in Half-Life 2.

Although Valve creator Gabe Newell reassured fans that there is a possibility for a new Half-Life entry, it would require developers to come together of their own accord due to the company’s management-free structure. This seemed increasingly unlikely when writers Marc Laidlaw, Erik Wolpaw, and Chet Faliszek left the studio.

To make matters worse, Laidlaw updated his website with “Epistle 3“, a short story that he dubs a “snapshot of a dream I had many years ago,” alluding to what a third entry would have contained despite changing the names of characters to avoid copyright claims.

While Valve is keen to discredit claims that the company has forgone the Half-Life series in favour of its other titles, it is clear that the ongoing support of Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offense and Team Fortress 2 has kept the teams occupied. That being said, with Valve’s new focus on expanding its library and the inevitable release of Dota 2-inspired competitive card game Artifact, perhaps anything is possible.

KitGuru Says: Which of these titles would you like to see come to life the most? Do you have a series in mind that would be a better fit to be brought back from the graveyard?

Back in 2016, Nightdive Studios successfully took to Kickstarter to crowdfund a remake of System Shock, with the goal of bringing the classic up to today's graphical standards while maintaining beloved gameplay and story elements. Over time, the studio got more and more ambitious, which transformed the project into something else entirely. This led to a hiatus in February, but now, development is starting back up again- though it does mean that the game won't be out until 2020.

When Nightdive first announced its hiatus, CEO Stephen Kick, said that the studio “lost focus” and was essentially creating “a completely new game”. Now the studio has returned to development, with Kick stating a few days ago that the intention is “to ship exactly the game that was promised”.

The downside to this is that it does mean a lengthy wait. Currently, the target release date is Q1 2020. The other issue is money, Nightdive only raised $1.3 million, which isn't enough to keep a studio afloat for four years.

According to Nightdive's latest update on the matter, by reigning in their vision for this game, publishers have “renewed interest”, so there will be financial backing coming from elsewhere.

KitGuru Says: From the sounds of it, Nightdive did the right thing by taking a step back and reconsidering their plans. Now we just have to sit back and hope that the rest of development goes smoothly.

In May 2016, Nightdive studios took to Kickstarter to launch a System Shock remake, bringing the classic up to today's graphical standards while maintaining its beloved gameplay/story elements. The game ended up raising over $1.3 million in total but it looks like Nightdive has hit a bump in the road, with the studio announcing that the project is currently on hiatus.

Over the weekend Nightdive CEO, Stephen Kick, revealed that the project was being put on hold. The Kickstarter update explains exactly why the breaks have been put on, and it looks like over ambition was the main culprit:

“Maybe we were too successful. Maybe we lost our focus. The vision began to change. We moved from a Remaster to a completely new game. We shifted engines from Unity to Unreal, a choice that we don’t regret and one that has worked out for us. With the switch we began envisioning doing more, but straying from the core concepts of the original title.”

Kick explains that over time, the studio wanted to do more and more with the game. Eventually, the scope had crept up so far that they were effectively making an entirely different game: “As the budget grew, we began a long series of conversations with potential publishing partners. The more that we worked on the game, the more that we wanted to do, and the further we got from the original concepts that made System Shock so great.”

So the System Shock remake is now on hiatus. In the meantime, the team at Nightdive Studios will be reassessing its plans and will eventually come back to finish the project.

KitGuru Says: There was a lot of excitement around the idea of a System Shock remake, but from the sounds of it, the project took on a life of its own over time. Hopefully this hiatus will give Nightdive Studios the time it needs to re-plan and finally deliver on its Kickstarter promises.

Earlier this week we got news that the System Shock remake in the works at Nightdive Studios managed to hit its $900,000 Kickstarter funding goal. Since then, some stretch goals have been announced and the funding keeps rolling in, with the project now surpassing the $1 million mark and on its way to hitting the first stretch goal.

The System Shock remake aims to rebuild the first game with a more modern take. The game is being built within Unity engine and so far, there is a playable demo that you can download for free to try it out.

The Kickstarter campaign surpassed the $1 million mark today and will hit its first stretch goal at $1.1 million. The first goal adds Mac, Linux and Razer Chroma support, then at $1.2 million the devs will invest in localisation for more countries. At $1.3 million some additional locations and story elements will end up in the game, while at $1.4 million there will be some design updates to things like weapon crafting/upgrading, an RPG levelling system will also be introduced.

There are three more stretch goals hitting $1.5 million, $1.7 million and $1.9 million which would fund some extra cinematic scenes and an orchestral soundtrack. The campaign currently has 13 days left to go so we will have to wait and see how many of these extra goals end up being reached.

Following on from the release of its free demo, it seems that enough people were convinced by the upcoming System Shock Remake, leading to the game hitting and surpassing the $900,000 funding goal for its Kickstarter campaign, with over two weeks to spare.

This does mean that Nightdive Studios will likely be moving on to stretch goals to keep pushing funding over the next 17 days. At the time of writing, the campaign has raised $45,000 over its initial goal but no stretch goals have been announced yet.

79dab338c0c22e2baaff672f07086bfa_original

While no additional goals have been outlined on the funding page yet, the studio has previously said that they will include things like cross platform play, new levels, challenge modes and support for more languages.

The campaign ends on the 28th of July. Once it is all funded, Nightdive Studios will get to finishing up its System Shock remake, which aims to completely re-build the original game in Unity Engine for a total visual overhaul. Aside from this remake, a company known as Otherside Entertainment is also working on System Shock 3 at the moment.

KitGuru Says: It seems that the System Shock franchise is making a resurgence at the moment, with a full remake on the way as well as a sequel. Did any of you guys play the System Shock remake demo? Will you play the full remake when it comes out?

Some of you will remember back in March that a HD remake of the original System Shock was announced. However, now it turns out that the project needs to be crowd funded, so it will be landing on Kickstarter at the end of next month.

There is currently some pre-alpha gameplay footage floating around, showing off the game with its new Unity Engine visuals. However, outside of that we haven't seen much.

In a post on the System Shock website, the development team wrote: “After two decades, we are remastering and re-imagining the original System Shock. We will keep the new game true to the classic experience, keeping all the things you loved, while updating the user interface and graphics to use a modern day engine (Unity). With the help of the original concept artist, the original vision of the Citadel Station and its inhabitants will finally come back to life.”

We don't know how much money the project will need to raise to take off, nor do we know about any stretch goals but we should find out more when the campaign launches on the 29th of June.

KitGuru Says: It seems a little weird to announce a game first and then decide to take it to Kickstarter after the fact but that might just be me. Did any of you play the original System Shock back in the day? Would you like to see it remade in a modern engine?

System Shock, the classic first-person PC title has been officially re-released on GOG with a new Enhanced Edition, bringing new features to the game. System Shock originally launched over twenty years ago now and this enhanced edition gives it a few warranted updates.

New features include mouse-look control and support for higher resolutions up to 1024×768, and 854×480 widescreen mode. All of the keys can be remapped now and some of the game's original bugs have now been fixed. The System Shock: Enhanced Edition even has a new trailer, which you can see below:
