Computex 2023 has officially kicked off and as is the case every year, the first thing we checked off on our list was the TAITRA opening press conference. This year's Computex is shaping up to be particularly big, with over 1,000 participating companies from 26 countries, spread out over 3,000 booths.

This year at Computex, Artificial Intelligence is set to be a big topic of conversation as we get a look at what's next for the HPC market. Keynote speakers this year will include the likes of  Jensen Huang, the Founder and CEO of NVIDIA, Alex Katouzian, SVP & GM, Mobile, Compute, XR (MCX), and Kedar Kondap, SVP and GM, Compute and Gaming from Qualcomm, Rafael Sotomayor, EVP and GM, Secure Connected Edge from NXP Semiconductors, Jason Chen, Chairman & CEO of Acer, and Charles Liang, Founder, President and CEO of Supermicro, and other leading companies.

In the gallery above you can see some of the photos we snapped during the press conference.

Another keen area of focus at Computex this year is sustainable developments, the metaverse and semiconductors. We'll be hearing from companies like Arm, Lenovo, Intel, Kioxia, Nvidia, Supermicro and others on these subjects.

KitGuru Says: We've begun doing the rounds at Computex and have already swung by Cooler Master and DeepCool. Stay tuned for more Computex coverage over the course of the week.

Just a few weeks ago, TAITRA announced plans to continue ahead with Computex 2020 with safety and hygiene measures in place to protect against the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Since then, the situation has been evolving and many more events are being cancelled. Computex 2020 is now in question once again, as Taiwan is closing its borders.

As shared by the Taoyuan Airport Twitter account, starting from March 19th, foreign nationals will be barred from entering Taiwan and travellers arriving in Taiwan must undergo a mandatory 14-day quarantine period.

We don't actually know how long these measures will be in place, so Computex could theoretically still take place in early June. However, it does seem that TAITRA will need to re-examine the situation and issue another update. The last statement came on the 25th of February and much has changed since then.

So far, we have not heard of any major companies cancelling plans to attend Computex 2020.

KitGuru Says: Computex taking place in June is starting to look less likely, which would be a shame but large events are of course not recommended at this time in order to slow the spread of the virus.

The tech world has been thrown into a whirlwind of uncertainty to start off the year, as the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has seen production schedules slide and major companies dropping out of big events. Since MWC was eventually cancelled, there have been questions around both GDC and Computex. Now we know that both events will be taking place as scheduled.

We've covered the announcements around the Game Developer Conference already today. Now, our attention turns to TAITRA, the group behind Computex each year. So far, the plan is to go ahead with Computex as scheduled, with a health and safety policy in place to protect all visitors and exhibitors.

Walter M.S. Yeh, President and CEO of TAITRA, put out a statement this week regarding Computex:

“On behalf of TAITRA, I wish to express my deepest sympathy, concern and support to those affected by the outbreak of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19). The new epidemic has caused serious harm to global and domestic MICE industries and tourism in Asia. However, Taiwan has been extremely effective in protecting the public through the stringent measures that have been implemented, and TAITRA will continue to monitor closely all developments and keep international visitors to Taiwan very well-informed.”

As a response to the situation, TAITRA will “enforce every available measure to ensure that the maximum levels of hygiene and sanitation are maintained”. This includes advising all visitors to wear face masks, medical staff being stationed on each floor of the exhibition halls and hand sanitizers put out in all public areas. Yeh does admit that these are “challenging circumstances” but still welcomes all visitors to Taiwan for the event.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Computex is still a few months away, so there is plenty of time to prepare and put precautions in place. MWC unfortunately didn't have the same amount of time to adequately handle the situation. So far, we don't know of any companies dropping out of Computex but this is an evolving situation, so we'll keep an eye out for any further updates.

On Monday 20th May, Thermaltake opened its flagship store for liquid cooled gaming systems in the swish Syntrend Creative Park, plum in the middle of Taipei – one week ahead of Computex. Syntrend is a multi-storey technology shopping mall where all of the world’s top tech brands have a presence. In a ceremony that involved Walter M. S. Yeh, President of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council, the ribbon was cut and a rather unique shopping experience was unveiled for the first time. KitGuru was on hand to capture the moment – and offer an explanation.

Being invited to the opening of the world’s first store dedicated to all things liquid cooling is, at once, intriguing and a little confusing. After a quick tour, however, it all starts to make perfect sense.

As Kenny Lin, CEO of Thermaltake (seen here with the President of Taitra), explained, “to help celebrate our 20th anniversary, we wanted to do something special. We have evolved from a mainstream hardware supplier into a company that is dedicated to liquid cooling. We’re hoping that this store will offer visitors the chance to experience the joy of liquid cooling, to educate themselves on how the technologies work, to be entertained and to the go for it themselves – and customise their own PC”.

The hands-on parts of the store have a clear and obvious function, but there is also a large education area. We asked Kenny about this. “Having worked closely with Taipei City University, we have now developed a course in liquid cooling for enthusiasts and regular users alike – which leads to certification”. Kenny is also expecting to work with local high schools, vocational schools, junior colleges and other learning centres.

One wall is completely covered in components, from ASUS, Gigabyte, ASRock and MSI motherboards to processors from AMD and Intel. We asked about this display:

“Our experts can guide people toward creating their perfect system. The order can be placed in store – using any components available in the market”, Kenny explained. “Once the parts arrive in store, the customer can come in and – with the help of our engineers – build a complete liquid cooled system with custom loops”.

For those with a passing interest, there is a 1 hour introductory course which costs only £10. For those wishing to go further, they have a 3 hour course at around £25, in which you will learn a lot about liquid cooling. Finally, there is a ‘bespoke’ option, where you can create the exact course you want – covering whatever you want to learn.

KitGuru says: We love the ambition of this liquid cooling centre. Kenny indicated that he will be working on the concept in Taipei, before considering rolling it out to other countries. We think that’s a great idea and hope it comes to a shopping mall near us soon.

With Computex 2018 now officially over, our man Leo was at the closing press conference to gather any final nuggets of information. As usual, TAITRA – the organising body behind Computex 2018 – had plenty of facts and figures to share.

Foremost among these is the fact that, as of 12PM June 9th, Computex 2018 hosted 42,284 international visitors, from a grand total of 168 countries which just goes to show the reach this trade show has. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the most visitors came from the United States, with Japan, China and Hong Kong close behind.

A lot of the focus has already switched to Computex 2019, and the news was announced that a second site will be opening in Nangang. This means Computex 2019  will use both Nangang 1 and Nangang 2, along with TWTC (Taiwan World Trade Centre) 1.

While TAITRA claims Nangang 2 will add another 1700 booths, it is worth mentioning that a ‘booth' is a unit of area, so 1 booth does not equal 1 exhibitor. ASUS, for instance, occupied 100 booths at Computex 2018, which equals two large areas on the show floor.

However, with Nangang 1 currently holding 2000 booths, and Nangang 2 set to add another 1700, however you slice it – it looks like Computex 2019 will be bigger than ever.

KitGuru says: Computex 2018 has proved to be another successful show, and we hope you have enjoyed our coverage of the event. We will certainly be back for Computex 2019.

Mr. Walter Yeh, President & CEO of TAITRA gave the closing Press conference for Computex 2017 with a bunch of statistics that show Computex continues to grow in importance. The organizers announced that 41,378 international visitors from 167 countries attended the show, a 1% increase from last year. Countries with the highest visitor growth include Thailand (30.63%), Indonesia (22.52%), India (20.86%), Vietnam (20.44%), and Russia (14.81%).

From the British perspective that might sound dispiriting or even a touch irrelevant but hold up, not so fast.

Computex actually has five strands, including Internet of Things, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning and tech start-ups and the gaming hardware that holds our interest is only one slice of the action. So forget the numbers – what counts is that Computex was the launch pad for Intel Core i9 and X299 and also a bunch of AMD X399 motherboards that support Threadripper.

And also a large number of RGB fans and power supplies, as you will have seen on KitGuru news reports.

Taiwan is the home of the gaming hardware industry and is outward looking. What we see at Computex is what you, the gamer, will be buying any day soon. It was interesting to hear how TAITRA, the people behind Computex, regard other shows such as CES Asia, which is on its doorstep (relatively speaking) in Shanghai, China. CES Asia is geared at selling into China whereas Computex is global and looks outwards to the rest of the world. In the same spirit TAITRA works in conjunction with CES in Las Vegas and is due to work with TechCrunch.

In fact the only loser in the current circumstances is CeBIT in Hannover, Germany which recently announced it is moving the next show to mid-June 2018. The next Computex will run from June 5th to 9th 2018 so there is absolutely no chance of any new PC products launching at CeBIT 2018, exactly as we predicted.

KitGuru Says: We had a great time covering Computex this year and there was certainly no shortage of huge announcements. What peaked your interest at Computex this year?

The first time you land in Taipei, you're immediately struck be a series of things. Alongside the heat/humidity/car fumes, there are the huge numbers of Starbucks and 7-11 convenience stores as well as the perpetual clouds hanging over the nearby hills. Look close at the people, then you will notice facemasks and – absolutely everywhere on the roads – mopeds. KitGuru prepares to get 2-stroked and wonders if the ending will be happy.

Taiwan is a country that's roughly the size of Wales, but with a few additional people living there. While the sheep-loving population of Wales is around 3 million, the moped-loving folks of Taiwan total around 23 million.

According to the latest government figures, there are almost 22 million vehicles registered in Taiwan and, of those, almost 70% are for mopeds.

That's close to 15 million mopeds.

Or, to put it another way, there are SIX mopeds in Taiwan for every man, woman and child living in Toronto or FIVE for every man woman and child living in Wales or TWO for everyone living in the city of New York.

Alongside Starbucks and 7-11, most streets seem to have an independent phone reseller, a barber shop and some kind of moped repair centre.

No surprise then, that Taiwan has been pushing hard to allow greater flexibility for moped technology exports to nearby Japan. And now, it seems that the Taiwanese government has got its way as Taiwan's China Motor Corporation is ready to open up Tokyo with a shipment of 2,000 electric mopeds.

These bikes will have 1.35 to 1.6kw engines and perform in a similar way to the old fashioned (and rather more smelly) 100cc mopeds of yesteryear.

Tomorrow's electric moped designs could look amazing, but - for now - they will look a lot like existing petrol driven units. The problem for companies like Honda will be price. CMC could smash consumer expectations.

KitGuru says: It's easy to imagine the Triumph and Norton owners laughing when crates arrived from Japan in the early 70s – marked with strange names like Honda and Suzuki. Wonder if the Japanese manufacturers will be laughing now?

News coming out of Taiwan this morning is that Cyberlink, arguably the most prevalent provider of proper video playback and photo manipulation software in the wonderful world of Windows, is investing BIG TIME in its OSX products (and more). KitGuru turns Power(news)Producer Pro to maximum and ponders the impact.

Whether it's because Microsoft (a) isn't allowed, (b) can't be bothered or (c) just plain hates us – the software that ships with the horribly over-priced software known as Windows has always been, well, horrible.

Sure, we all know someone who can do ‘clever things' with Microsoft Paint, but let's be honest – the Apps you can install on an iPad 4s will pretty much put the basic Windows programs to shame.

Buy a PC from a system builder though, and your options change. Cyberlink, darling of the Taiwan stock exchange, has closed a scary amount of deals on pre-installing some version of PowerDVD, PowerProducer etc on ready-made PCs. Not only do the system builders get pressured to buying and installing these multimedia suites, you get to thinking that every component inside your new PC ALSO comes with a version of Cyberlink DobberyDooDaa 5.8

In short: As far as possible, Cyberlink pwns the Windows-using desktop PC and laptop markets. But not so Apple. In the Apple space, it has less market share than the USA has weight-gain programmes for under-eaters.

But all that's to change. Having grown as far as they can with the existing PC market, Cyberlink CEO Alice Chang is no beating her developers with sticks – forcing them to love the Lion OS and to produce market-winning, Apps-based products for Apple-bods in the future.

Cyberlink will be ready to make some big announcements shortly, in the meantime apple users will have to make do with products like Final Cut Express.

That Alice Chang, she's no mug. Cyberlink's software has looked more and more like AppleWare for ages

KitGuru says: Alice Chang is a smart cookie. Having cleaned up her channel over the past 4 years, she must be eyeing the potentially huge cash windfall that a series of successful Apple-related launches could bring.
