The post Razer issues response to phone update fiasco first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
On Tuesday we broke the news that customers who bought the Razer Phone via Three had received no software updates since the phone launched last November. Two days on, Razer got in touch with us and issued a statement to clarify the situation as well as announce a change to how its updates will be released.

With plenty of readers getting in touch with us over the last weeks and days, it seems there are plenty of folks out there who – until Tuesday night – had simply not received any updates to their Razer Phones which had been purchased via Three. Not only did that have security ramifications in the wake of Spectre and Meltdown, there were also multiple improvements made to the Razer Phone via these software updates which Three customers were simply not getting.

However, this morning Razer got in touch with us and issued the following statement, copied verbatim:

‘To clarify the status of updates to Three European customers.

We have been working on an update since before Christmas and this was pushed to all Three European customers last night. This update includes Netflix HDR and Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 support, a camera update and a security update. Right now, the latest software version update is available for all Three Razer Phone consumers in Europe including Three UK, Three Ireland, Three Italy, Three Sweden and Three Denmark.

There are different firmware builds in use when updating Razer Phones. One is for handsets bought through the Razerstore, the other is for handsets bought through mobile operators.

When Razer has an update ready to launch, we can send the update as an Over The Air (OTA) update to non-Three handsets immediately, but for any handsets bought from an operator, this isn’t so easy as it must be approved by the particular network before its released to their customers. Because of this required process, it can take some time for it to reach non-direct customers.

Moving forward, we are working to align our global updates to launch concurrently, so all updates and improvements can be enjoyed by all Razer Phone users simultaneously.'

It seems that while Razer had been working hard to release updates – my review handset has now been updated three times – customers who got their phone from Three had to wait for Three to approve the updates before they could be pushed to their handsets OTA. For handsets bought directly from Razer, there is no need for this third-party approval so updates have been pushed out a lot faster.

So now that the situation has been clarified, Razer is also taking steps to ensure that it won't happen again. In essence, it appears that all Razer Phone handsets will now be getting their updates at the same time – instead of those with handsets bought directly from Razer getting their updates first. This is certainly a fairer way of doing things though customers who did get their handset from Razer may not be so happy.

If you did get your Razer Phone via Three, be sure to check for that latest update as it should now be available to download.

KitGuru says: While it has certainly been a long wait for Three customers, it is good to hear Razer's side of the story. At the very least, everyone should be getting their updates at the same time in the future.

Richard Carriere is Senior Vice President for CyberLink, a successful Taiwanese company that finds itself operating in a very fluid market. As Microsoft changes its playback strategy again, removing Media Player from Windows 10, so Cyberlink has new opportunities. We caught up with Richard to ask about the challenges and opportunities that Microsoft's decision will create.

Whether as a pre-installation on a system or as a separate boxed product, CyberLink has sold an impressive 2 billion copies of its PowerDVD software. Before moving onto Media Player, we asked Richard about CyberLink's position in the market today.

“CyberLink has been around for almost 20 years”, he explained. “It all started with PowerDVD and it's now number one in the market by sales volume. It's also the most complete media player”.

“Since our inception we have extended our expertise into video and photo editing, in addition to bringing several digital media utility software tools to the market”, said Richard. “Today, our number one product still remains PowerDVD, with version 15 just launched last month, closely followed by our Director family of creative software. These products retail between £50 and £240 in the UK”.

So much of what we do here at KitGuru is based on adding super-fast components to the inside of your system or attaching a new monitor with a resolution the like of which your sitting room/den/office has never seen. But how much of our experience is now based on how multiple devices can access the interweb through a single routing device?

YOU NOW HAVE THE CHANCE TO WIN A LIGHTNING FAST GATEWAY – COURTESY OF TP-LINK!

If you want to know more about TP-LINK's background, how they turnover close to $2Bn or employ more than 21,000 people, then check our recent interview. Today, it's all about the prize-products themselves.

TP-Link-Competition-KitGuru

Having a fast, reliable access point is the first stage in getting a decent internet experience into your household/small office. Having a router that's able to propagate a signal throughout the property is also important. Lastly, for times when you want to transfer files or execute large scale backups to a NAS etc, it's important to have oodles of bandwidth. That's where the 801.11AC standard comes in to play – as it can be 3x faster than a good 802.11n device.

  • 1st Prize: TP-LINK Archer C9 AC1900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router
    Simultaneous 2.4GHz 600Mbps and 5GHz 1300Mbps connections
1GHz Dual Core Processor ensures no interruption while processing multiple tasks
USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports – easily share printers and other devices
  • 2nd Prize: TP-LINK Archer D7 AC1750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router
    Simultaneous 2.4GHz 450Mbps and 5GHz 1300Mbps connections
Ethernet WAN offers another broadband connectivity option

So what do you have to do in order to win?

Please read the following question and instructions carefully!

What is the 5GHz data speed offered by both of these TP-LINK routers?

a: 500Mbps
b: 900Mbps
c: 1,300Mbps

If you own the world's fastest CPU and GPU combination, then maybe you can feel comfortable declaring ‘Looks aren't important, it's what's inside that counts'. For the vast majority of KitGuru readers however, looks are important. We want a rig that looks seriously desirable, especially if your existing PC is looking tired. Fear not, with Aerocool, we're here to help.

IT'S TIME TO PIMP YOUR RIG – COURTESY OF AEROCOOL!

Autumn 2013 saw a remarkable chassis turn up at KitGuru Labs. While everyone in the industry was familiar with Aerocool's fan/cooling control panels, we'd never seen anything like the Dead Silence Cube chassis. Gorgeous design and near-silent fans made this a winning combination and, following our review, these cases would soon be seen in rigs across the nation.

Aerocool followed up the original case with the larger, slimmer Dead Silence DS200 in June and again it impressed us. You'll be happy to hear that this mid-tower chassis forms the core of our Aerocool Competition Prize Line-Up – alongside an 1100w Strike-X 80Plus Gold PSU, Dead Silence Fans and Front Panel Controller!

Interesting? Remember, you can get all the latest update news on Aerocool here.

So what do you have to do in order to win?

Club3D has been around for almost 20 years as a graphics card brand and, at one stage, was famous for being the only manufacturer who worked with all of the major GPU producers. They are now highly focused and want to bring more products to the UK market. We managed to catch up with Gerjan Blonet, an expert on Club3D matters.

Let's start at the beginning. We asked Gerjan when the company was formed.
“The company was established back in 1997 in Hoofddorp, the Netherlands as a manufacturer of computer components”, he explained. “So we’re in our 18th year of trading now. My colleagues have a wealth of experience; they’re almost walking graphics cards. Not me though, I’ve been with Club 3D since 2012 so I’m no guru yet”.

So what was the driving force behind the company – the inspiration?
“The strong desire of our founders was to establish a brand with a fresh approach on offering a high quality, complete chipset solution at affordable prices”, he said. “A brand that relies on having a European base, close to our customers with short communication lines. Our warehouse is located next to Schiphol airport itself. So we don’t have to ship from the Far East”.

In the KitGuru Annual Awards 2014, we saw a lot of mainstream technology companies using their brand to gain share in the peripherals market, for example, is Club3D 100% focused on graphics?
“In the early days we only did graphics cards”, said Gerjan. “Back in 2001, Club 3D was the first AiB (Add In Board partner) for ATI Technologies. In 2006 we started to diversify our product range by introducing sound cards and in the past years our current range of SenseVision, Power supplies and cables/ adapters”.

Gerjan-Blonet-Club3D-Exclusive-Interview-KitGuru

At one point, Club3D was the only company to offer all 4 major GPUs – what does Gerjan offer now and what are Club3D's plans for the future?
“Correct, he said. “After our partnership with ATi Technologies, our goal was to be the pioneer for a Total Graphics Solution. So we formed partnerships with Nvidia, S3 Graphics and XGI Technology, the latter two probably unknown by your younger readers”.

“Since early 2013 we became an ‘AMD only’ AiB. We share AMD’s vision and believe they have the lead when it comes to technological innovation. In the near future we will continue to focus on our range of PokerSeries gaming cards and expand our innovative SenseVision range of Multi Monitor solutions which mostly use DisplayLink chips”.

Everything through one cable

“SenseVision started in 2011 with an external USB Graphics Card, in 2013 we were the first in the world to launch an MST (Multi Stream Transport) Hub and in 2014 we were the first in the world to launch a USB 3.0 to 4K Graphics Adapter and Docking Station. In the coming years we will continue with more ‘world’s first’ introductions in the SenseVision range. I can’t tell much at this stage, maybe a hint: everything through one cable”.

Graphics card manufacturers have a choice when they set up business. They can push 100% with their own brand, or choose to use their brand for consumers (i.e. cards sold through stores etc) and keep a ‘white label' going for supplying top PC companies. Example? When we cracked open an HP desktop a while back, it became obvious that the mainboard and graphics card had been made by MSI – although there was no MSI branding anywhere.

We asked Gerjan about Club3D's focus.

Buying from a local system builder is a no-brainer for me

“We focus on PC Gaming enthusiasts and system builders”, he told KitGuru. “Compared to some other countries it’s interesting to see how popular and well established home-grown system builders are in the UK. But with their high level of enthusiasm, knowledge, quality, service, their selection of the latest components and ability to create bespoke systems at decent prices, buying from a local system builder is a no-brainer for me if I was in the market for a new gaming rig”.

Reference design have been getting better in recent years, but cooling is certainly one area where an AiB can differentiate its offer. What is Club3D's point of view?

“Reference designs set a bar when it comes to the balance between performance, noise/ heat production and power consumption”, explained Gerjan. “However in many cases there is room to improve the cooling performance and noise levels while remaining the reliability by customizing PCB, components and cooler. For that reason we put a lot of effort in our PokerSeries gaming cards which aim to be both cooler and quieter than a reference design. Oh and better looking of course!”

3 fans and 6 copper heatpipes

So how difficult is it to create a custom cooling solution?

“Some years ago we introduced our high performance CoolStream cooling solutions which are now a standard feature on the PokerSeries range”, he told us. “Depending on the GPU it can be quite a task to develop a cooler which is not only nice to look at but does its job cool and quietly under any load. The current generation of CoolStream coolers has up to 3 fans and up to 6 copper heatpipes to dissipate the heat while remaining as quiet as possible. We’re constantly experimenting with new cooling solutions though. Personally I’m particularly impressed by the advanced hybrid cooler on the current Radeon R9 295X2 card”.

Yep, hard to argue that. AMD batted way above its weight when it came to the 295X2 cooling solution.

We see a growing demand… Multiple monitors for everyone

After hunkering down in the bunker for 6-7 years, we can all feel the market being re-energised and resellers look like reporting record sales for parts of 2014/15. Against that backdrop, what goals does Club3D have for 2015?

“According to the latest JPR report the PC Gaming market will continue to grow to $ 23B globally in 2017, we see no recession in the PC Gaming market!”, he exclaimed. “Given the current market share of AMD graphics cards our main goal is to introduce great performing, attractively priced new PokerSeries cards and claim back market share from the competition.
Another goal is to expand our SenseVision range of Multi Monitor solutions by focusing more on B2b channels like the enterprise notebook and professional tablet markets. We see a growing demand and we’re determined to increase our business and market share there. Multiple Monitors for everyone!”

KitGuru also likes the increased focus on screen real estate – more is definitely better for a number of reasons.

Gerjan-Blonet-Club3D-Exclusive-Interview-KitGuru-Desk

Enough about the company and products, let's find out a bit more about Gerjan with KitGuru's standard set of personal questions.

What did Gerjan do before Club3D?
“I’ve been assistant store manager at a mobile phone shop, I sold cars at a Toyota dealership and I worked as a sales rep for a large manufacturer of Sunglasses. But I was always a tech and gadgets nut”.

So what was your first computer?
“It was an IBM 486DX4 handed down by my dad back in ’95. I got my first decent (gaming) PC back in ’99 when I was 15 years old”.

If you need to impress your friends, what do you cook at home?

“Hehe my friends are usually not impressed by my cooking skills. But my steaks are pretty decent if I say so myself. My home baked cakes are not too bad either, but to say impressive?”

Which food do you love, but you can’t make it right – so you always need to eat it at a restaurant?
“I like Chinese, Japanese and Indian food but I lack the skills and patience for that. Luckily there are some eastern restaurants in my neighbourhood in Haarlem”.

If you could invent one thing, what would it be?
“A health improving alternative for smoking! Or maybe a renewable alternative for Oil”.

KitGuru says: A big THANK YOU to Gerjan for taking the time to speak with us.

After a 72-hour session playing combat games in a Taiwanese internet cafe, Mr Hsieh slumped down for what his neighbours thought was a nap. He never woke up. KitGuru takes a look at the details.

Regular travellers normally have a system to deal with long haul flights. We know that sitting in one position for an extended period of time is not good, so we'll normally engage in a number of behaviours to counter the effects of long term sitting, including:

  • Special socks
  • Loose clothing to allow blood flow
  • Getting up and moving around at regular intervals to boost circulation
  • Plenty of liquid refreshment – especially water
  • Massaging your legs and stretching
  • Popping half an aspirin to thin the blood

And that kind of behaviour is for a flight lasting less than 12 hours. Sitting in outdoor clothing at a computer terminal for a 72 hour game playing session might seem ‘soft', but it can put a serious strain on the human body.

Even so, any kind of illness is rare when gaming – as long as you are sensible.

Seeking wisdom on the subject, KitGuru spoke with Stewart Fletcher from Multiplay who told us that in 15 years of running more than 50 of the world's largest LAN party events, no one has as much as ‘fainted at their keyboard' at Insomnia. Essentially, the the events are very active and tournaments take place across multiple halls. Players are constantly active and there is no possibility for injury/illness.

Man-dies-gaming-taiwan-KitGuru

KitGuru says: It seems that the authorities in Taiwan will be increasing patrols through game centres, making sure that people get up and move every two hours. We applaud this approach. Even this small precaution is likely to prevent any further incidents – despite what you might hear in the tabloids.

How long is too long when it comes to computer games? Let us know about your longest marathon gaming session over on Facebook.

Confirmation just in on that third AMD exit, as the corporate web site gets updated to show the future line-up. KitGuru continues to be confused at the number and level of changes.

Regardless of the reasons why any of these execs left AMD today, one thing is for certain – they will be replaced and quickly.

That means a big splash in the recruitment market. Imagine picking up 20-30% of a 6-7 figure salary as commission on one placement – that is going to offer significant motivation for the ‘close'.

Normally, when taking over such a senior role, the person coming in will want some control over their team – including the hiring, firing and rearrangement of the team.

Comparing old and new org charts, the holes are definitely there – which means so is the opportunity.

AMD-Spot-the-Exec-Difference-KitGuru

KitGuru says: Nervous times ahead for AMD. Will be interesting to see how long it takes for the dust to settle and a new General Manager, Chief Marketing Officer and Chief Strategy Officer to be appointed – before kicking off department rearrangements. We all want Intel and nVidia to have genuine competition – so let's hope this helps.

Let us know what you think over on Facebook.

Quite an amazing day over at AMD HQ. News in that a statutory 8K filing has revealed that the company has just lost its heads of marketing and strategy. What is going on in Texas we wonder?

From time to time a large organisation will see senior personnel come and go, but KitGuru cannot remember a time when the heads of strategy and marketing leave on the same say as the Senior Vice President and General Manager.

You can see the details of the activity over here.

We heard earlier that John Byrne had decided to ‘follow other pursuits', but this latest news gives everything a much more serious spin.

Collette LaForce was brought in from Dell at significant cost just 2 years ago and with some fanfare. Now she's gone.

It's all happened so fast that there is a major Collette LaForce shaped hole in AMD's bio pages.

Some shocking news into KitGuru HQ just now, says that AMD’s Senior Vice President and General Manager, John Byrne, will be leaving the company. What makes a top executive, with over 25 years’ experience in senior positions, leave a company like AMD?

Byrne was promoted from Chief Sales Officer to the company’s number two role in June, but was known to have had his eye on top slot – which went to Dr Lisa Su.

Despite Byrne’s sales force regularly delivering over $5 billion in sales revenue, the company decided that it wanted to be engineering-led, which is certainly an interesting proposition.

Whatever the underlying reasons, Byrne has been involved in the technology sector since 1988 and his experience will surely be missed.

As well as his direct experience, AMD will also be losing a key contact for many of the world’s largest electronics manufacturers. Byrne has been AMD’s key man for major relationships (like Apple) since being appointed VP/General Manager for the Americas in 2011.

He was also a member of the core team that helped AMD restructure into a company that has (a) cash on hand and (b) clear strategy to move away from the markets of the past – preparing for a future where traditional technologies like desktop CPUs and GPUs will have less and less importance in the market.

If we’re reading between the lines properly, then it seems that AMD has been preparing to ‘go dark’ in a number of ways over the next 12 months or so, paring back as much as possible in preparation for large scale launches in the future. On the other hand, Byrne’s style is more energetic – focused on ways to expand a company’s sales dynamically.

It’s possible that the two psychologies won’t be compatible until 2016, so maybe that led to a split.

Then there’s the classic ‘family reasons’ possibility. Having started a family last year, Byrne may opt to take time off to spend with them.

Whatever the underlying reason, we’re sure that there will be no shortage of suitors for Senior Vice President, from a Fortune 500 company, with Byrne’s experience in the technology sector.

KitGuru says: While we understand that there is a position on the board at Glasgow Rangers, hot favourites for Byrne’s signature must be Dell and Lenovo – both of which are significantly larger than AMD or Rangers.

What does this mean for AMD? Let us know over on Facebook.

Anyone who has used a digital camera and some editing software, will have tried to create a panorama by combining two or more photos together. It's a technique that can be easily accomplished – with a product like Photoshop – for half a dozen photos or so. The folks at NASA have been a little more ambitious. KitGuru stitches the facts together.

Launched into low Earth orbit back in 1990, Hubble has been pointing its 2.4 metre mirror at astronomic bodies for 25 years – and it continues to amaze. Especially when you consider that its main lens was faulty and could not function properly until the 11,000Kg telescope had been orbiting the Earth for 3 years.

There was a chance that the programme would be canned around 2009, but one final maintenance mission was launched and there are now hopes that Hubble will continue to capture the universe through to 2020.

That brings us to the Panchromatic Hubble Andromeda Treasury project – which spans many years – and involves the capture and integration of more than 7,300 individual images into a single shot of our nearest galactic neighbour.

The shots themselves were taken from July 2010 through to October 2013 and have, finally, been brought together with fidelity.

The result is a single shot that shows the combined beauty of around 117 million stars. Even so, this ‘three year compilation' is less than half of everything in the area.

Technically, the images were shot in monochrome, but Hubble is a smart device and can use multiple filters to capture a specific part of the spectrum, from infrared to ultraviolet – which are then combined using special techniques to create false-colour final images.

Hubble collects data on solid state devices that were fitted, in space, between 1997 and 1999 – and the telescope sends around 120GB of data back to Earth each week.

Below is a small version of the final version – click on it to get a 1920 ‘HD' version or use this link for the full 10,000 pixel version. For more info, you can visit the PHAT mission page here.

When it comes to the Christmas period, we normally associate it with the season to be jolly. For civilians that may be true but, in the hard fought world of system builders, it's more a case of desk the halls with guns and ammo. The shoot out for your Xmas cash has started in earnest.

When nVidia landed the top end Maxwell cards, systems with a GTX970 or 980 we're coming in well above £1,000.

Shortly after, we started to see some deals just under the £999 level.

It seems that today we're seeing the first of the Xmas deals at a much lower price point – led by local system builder MESH at £799.

So what will seven hundred and ninety nine pound coins buy you?

Alongside an Intel Core i7 4790 processor which can turbo to 4GHz, you get a 4GB GTX970 and 8GB of system memory (1866MHz) alongside Windows 8.1 installed in a Cooler Master K350 ATX gaming chassis with a side window.

The only thing missing is an SSD (it ships with a 1TB hard drive as standard), so it would be worth checking out if the upgrade price is sensible.

KitGuru says: While we don't expect the kind of casualties that Americans manage to achieve in shopping malls across the country come Black Friday/Monday, there will be serious deals to be had locally in the next 4 weeks. Keep your eyes peeled.

While the world of solid state drives is zeroing in on the traditional hard drive, the actual cost per terabyte difference is still pretty huge. One solution is to mount a small SSD on the hard drive itself. Here, Adam Ciernicki from Seagate explains the technology to Leo Waldock.

Looking at an online store like OcUK will tell you that solid state drives now cost just over £300 per terabyte, while a traditional mechanical drive is closer to £30 per terabyte (for a 4TB drive). Opt for a 2TB SSHD and you are likely to be paying a relatively small premium of around £15 for an 8GB SSD to help cache your most popular data. Here's the inside story.

KitGuru says: The proof of the technology is in the testing. For now, it's interesting, but we'd like to see a much larger SSD attached to the drive – and for overall performance to be cranked up to provide a serious challenge to a two drive solution.

For mainboard manufacturers, the world of overclocking is like the F1 circuit for teams like Mercedes. It is a chance to show off their design skills – to push the hardware to its breaking point and, often, straight past.

KitGuru says: It's a cool little set up that MSI have going on in Taipei. When we arrived, the team was hard at work on a new set of parameters for an X99 mainboard – information that can be fed back to the various design teams, in order to make the next generation of boards better. We definitely DO NOT advise you to try attacking anyone with LN2!

Spend any time around kids and you will be asked, “Can I be a gamer when I grow up?”. When there was no money in electronic sports (eSports), the question was moot – there was no living to be made. Then a handful of plucky players started to earn some cash and, in 2015, the amount of money that will be picked up in tournaments etc will be absolutely huge. KitGuru caught up with Team Fnatic's Chief Operating Officer to get the full truth about being a professional gamer.

For parents, hearing that your kid is serious about making it as a professional gamer is like hearing that your daughter wants to be a poll dancer or that your son wants to be in a band. As an adult, you can see just how few safety nets there will be – compared to something like law, computer science or even being a games developer. But as the money builds up, it seems that eSports will take its place alongside regular sports as a potential career.

However, most tournaments are won by players under 24 and most under-18s won't be travelling on planes across the globe alone to compete.

Realistically, that means you need to have world-class gaming skills as you hit your 18th birthday and to then win everything you can for the next 5 years.

At that point, you can total up your winnings and decide if you have been a successful, professional eSports player.

KitGuru says: In the UK, if you are serious about your eSports, you would be wise to visit www.Multiplay.co.uk and join in Insomnia 53 in the Ricoh Arena from November 21st to 23rd. It will give you a strong flavour of how tournaments work and a chance to pit your skills against serious players. You'll soon find out if you have what it takes.

Technically, the reason KitGuru spent 18 hours travelling to the other side of the planet was the MSI Beat IT 2014 Gaming Finals. Along the way, we got first hands on a brand new laptop, graphics card and main board. In our final ‘live' report, we cover the gaming itself. It would be rude not to.

This year saw the 5th anniversary of the tournament and it has been growing steadily. According to all of the gamers we spoke with, what made this event so special was the fact that MSI managed to get almost 800 teams to enter from around the world.

Organizational expertise was provided by Fnatic, MSI's pro-gaming partner and a source of many product innovations in recent years. The setting was Taipei, which meant that the sponsors involved (MSI, Intel, nVidia, Blizzard etc) all had strong representation on hand. You can get an idea of the set-up from this lush video:-

When you're dealing with amateur gamers, you can get a huge number of entries either by marketing your event in a smart way or by appealing to a specific community.

Pro-gamers are different. Without meaning to be disparaging, they are predators. They react to ‘blood' – and the blood for a major tournament is the prize pot. For MSI Beat IT 2014, that prize pot topped the $113,000 mark. Healthy enough to attract a significant amount of gaming talent – with close to 800 teams applying for a position in the regional heats when the tournament was announced.

Two games were chosen, DOTA2 and StarCraft 2.

The opening ceremony featured Intel and nVidia among others – and the very well received MSI Dragon Ladies. The stage itself could easily be described as ‘fully loaded' and if a rock band had taken to the stage we would not have been surprised. As it was, the musical fair was a strict diet of hardcore trance.

Beat-IT-2014-Opening-Ceremony-Stage-KitGuru

In the StarCraft 2 tournament, the Asian/Pacific players ripped through the competition during the first day heats – not a Brit/German/American to be seen in this line up for day 2, but it was a lot tighter in DOTA2.

MSI-Beat-It-2014-StarCraft-2-Final-16-KitGuru

Just to give you an idea of how far/fast these players have developed – former world number one StarCraft player Flash was pretty much blown away on the opening day of SC2 – and the guy who beat him didn't even make it to the last day. He got creamed 3-1 by Solar, who would go on to take victory in the final.

After 7 intense matches in the Grand Final, Solar beat PartinG 4-3 to claim the MSI Beat IT 2014 Global StarCraft II championship title.

That's $5,000 a day for 2 days work. Not bad. Not bad at all.

Holding down the honours for Europe were Virtus.pro from Russia in DOTA2. This team has been fielding winners for more than a decade – so they know how to get the job done against global opposition. In the finals, they edged out a strong challenge from Team Immunity – who had won the earlier qualifier for the Australasian region.

Again, one of the great aspects of this tournament was the way it genuinely brought together high quality gamers from across the globe. Chinese team CDEC managed an honourable 3rd place.

Picking up cheques for $5,000 each, you have to say that it was also a good weekend's work for the Russians.

Solar-and-Virtus-Pro-win-Beat-IT-2014-KitGuru

KitGuru says: While eSports has developed a lot over the past 2 decades – and there is a lot of money in the sport – the roadmap for young gamers to achieve success and to understand exactly where every player around them is ranked – is not easy. Having a big technology company like MSI behind this kind of event can only help eSports going forward.

Naturally for a publication like KitGuru, we spend a lot of time looking at graphic cards that cost hundreds of pounds and which rip through the latest games at phenomenal frame rates. But, in the real world, those cards represent only a fraction of the GPUs sold. We speak with Bill Donnelly from Sapphire to find out where low cost units like the R7 240 come in.

A couple of years ago, in a casual conversation with a high-street computer reseller in London's Tottenham Court Road (the country's electronics hub), we discovered a rather odd fact. They told us that if you only look at units shipped – and not the value of the card or its profitability – then the largest ‘spike' on the sales chart was usually for something like a 1GB GeForce 210. The reason why is simple: If you have an older Intel processor, then you have almost zero graphics capability – so running dual screens etc is a fantasy. Unless you buy an entry level GPU. Bill Donnelly from Sapphire takes us around the R7 240 and explains which market need it fulfills.

KitGuru says: You're not going to use this for gaming – even if you put a pair of R7 240s in CrossFire. But for a processional user who doesn't need more graphics power, but who does need more features, then it could be a solution to the problem.

Have you ever been stuck with poor CPU graphics and wished you'd had something as basic as the R7 240 to get you through a project? Discuss on our Facebook page, over HERE.

The array of mainboard options facing enthusiasts toward the back end of 2014 is nothing short of astonishing. With four mainstream manufacturers vying for position and several chipsets available, everyone is looking for any advantage they can get. KitGuru spies the latest step forward in this competition.

For the most part we all focus on the power of CPUs and graphic cards but, in the 21st century, the connection speed between disparate devices is as important as any other. Networks are a 21st century issue. Pure transmission speed is one thing, latency is another.

When the Bigfoot boffins first decided to work around the Windows networking stack in 2006, the idea was quite revolutionary. Look at all the places where Microsoft's way of working with networks might decrease speed or increase latency – and simply create another solution that can bypass those bottlenecks. The result was the original Killer networking card, which was a decent enough product – but hampered by its pricing.

There then followed a five year journey, during which time the company bounced between potential acquisition and complete failure.

In September 2011, something strange happened.

Qualcomm, a $25 Billion corporation, declared complete confidence in the concept and IP – buying it for itself. So now what had been considered a marginal technology by many, was suddenly part of the portfolio of a very serious and well financed organisation.

We spoke to the MSI mainboard team while we were over in Taipei this week for the Beat IT 2014 gaming event, and they told us that putting Killer networking into their premium gaming X99 board was an easy decision.

According to the packaging, the benefits centre on an ability to utilise the Killer DoubleShot Pro facility – allowing LAN and WAN to function simultaneously with a combined data speed up to 1.866Gbps.

Probably useful for gamers that want to take advantage of the in-built full HD hardware streaming solution for game broadcasting at 60fps with zero CPU impact.

MSI-X99-Gaming-9-ACK-Mainboard-Beat-IT-2014-KitGuru

KitGuru says: Whatever your views on Killer network products, it does make for an interesting tick-box next to a top end mainboard. If it floats your boat, then the ‘K' is what you're looking for after the ‘AC'.

Now MSI has pushed the boat out just a little further with some neat innovations on the GTX970.

While we have all known about the MSI Twin Frozr V cooler for a couple of months now, the ones that have been spotted so far are all in mundane materials. Good. Efficient. But mundane.

Now the VGA team at MSI has been working hard to create something a little more aesthetically appealing and – according to their engineers – more efficient overall.

We will bring you an interview with Andy from the MSI VGA team shortly, but for now take a good look at the GTX 970 Gold Edition card.

Increased clocks have been made possible by pairing a solid backplate with some specially treated copper to make a heatpipe/fan combo that MSI believes is the best around.

We'll try to eek the details of that clock improvement from a product manager later today.

In the following pics, you will see some slight colour variations – this was due to the enormous amount of stage lights going off when we accessed the sample. The first one is the most colour accurate.

KitGuru says: We love it when companies push the boat out on design. Twin Frozr has been a good cooler already up to now – and it looks even better in this gold configuration at Beat IT 2014, when coupled with a special set of copper heatpipes.

At Beat IT 2014 in Taipei, alongside a whole heap of new hardware from MSI, its partners were also on hand to show their wares. KitGuru spoke with Chris Liu, hardware guru for Silverstone.

With the move toward smaller form factor PCs (SFF) and emphasis on performance-per-watt etc, you would imagine that smaller means less electricity.

Not so, according to Silverstone.

They were showing off some neat SFF kit at the Beat It event, one of which was an 80Plus Gold rated 600w PSU.

Which brought the conversation round to the SG13 chassis seen at Computex back in June.

“We really expect this part of the market to grow next year”, Chris told us.

“Silverstone has a lot of experience in this area, dating back to the original SG01”, he explained. “But, in the past, smaller chassis normally meant systems that were a lot less powerful. That is changing”.

“We have the 600w 80Plus Gold rated PSU in production now, but we are already working on bigger supplies into the same form factor”, Chris told us.

You can find small form factor PSUs with very high wattage ratings if you get into the server sector, but they generally don't worry about noise – so the airflow can create some serious decibels.

It will be interesting to see just how far Silverstone can go with this kind of PSU.

KitGuru says: Given the improved efficiency that Maxwell brings to the market – and Intel’s continued control of power draw within its CPUs – it’s hard to see how a small form factor PC could need much more than 600 watts, so it will be interesting to see (a) just how big Silverstone makes its next PSU and (b) what exactly it will be powering.

Let us know what you think about small form factor PCs over on Facebook.

Over at MSI Beat IT 2014, the main focus is on the global gaming competition which brings together teams from across the planet for a chance to win over $113,000 in prize money. At the same time, there is some interesting hardware on show – and a lot of senior MSI personnel on hand to answer questions. We caught up with Eric Kuo, VP for the Notebook Division.

We will deliver a full and in-depth interview with Eric shortly, but for now we wanted to share some of the insights he gave us in a small room off the main competition hall in Taipei's ATT For Fun complex.

Eric started with his company's strategy on making desktop systems.

“It's not something we will do”, he explained. “We have an All-in-One solution and a barebone system with Nightblade, but that's it. We don't want to compete with our own customers. We don't think that is a good strategy”.

When KitGuru reviewed the Nightblade, it was clear that this would be something you can get from MESH, Overclockers or Scan – rather than from MSI.

This is a clear statement on direction from MSI.

We wondered about smaller form factor systems – maybe ones with a specialist operating system like Steam.

Smiling, Eric told us, “No, no, we will not produce an MSI Steam Box”.

“We have big manufacturing capability and this is the kind of product that a customer might want us to produce for them, but we have no plans for an MSI Steam Box”.

He then paused. Another smile, and said, “That doesn't mean we won't have something clever in a small form factor”.

Intriguing stuff.

So MSI won't produce a desktop to compete with customers, won't make a Steam Box with an MSI logo, but will help partners make Steam Boxes – and will have something cool in the small form factor market shortly.

So the focus is 100% on hardware?

“Not at all”, he replied. “Right now, community is one of the most important things for MSI. We are very happy with the success of Beat IT 2014 and we want to reach out further next year – to get even more teams and countries involved. We believe that the spirit of community, within gaming, is very important”.

Eric-Kuo-Beat-IT-2014-Exclusive-Interview-KitGuru

KitGuru says: Big sigh of relief from the channel when they hear that MSI will go out of its way not to compete with them head-2-head on the desktop. And a big smile on the faces of competitive gamers in far flung places, as MSI dedicates itself to supporting communities and competitions in a bigger way in 2014.

Is it right that component manufacturers steer clear of making complete systems – or should they make whatever they want? Let us know over on Facebook.

As MSI prepares to launch a brand new, top of the range gaming laptop, KitGuru took the opportunity to spend time with Alex Lin, the Product Manager for notebooks. We were interested to know what kind of challenges he and his team face when trying to bring a new product to market.

It's clear to industry insiders like KitGuru, that MSI has seen 2 large changes in direction when it comes to notebooks. Around 10 years ago, the company decided that notebooks were the market to be in and a huge amount of resource was pushed into achieving ‘Global Top 10 Status' with research organisations like IDC.

The problem is that in order to register on an IDC chart, you need to be making a vast number of units – and pushing them through a global channel – regardless of whether or not you actually sell them.

In simple terms, it becomes a channel management business – not a design & innovation business. We asked Alex for the inside track.

“There will always be brilliant ideas”, he told us. “But if you want to succeed with your design, then there are 3 elements that must be addressed right at the start”.

“The first is always thermal design”, he said. “Sure, a company as big as MSI can order custom designed components, but there is a hard deck when it comes to wattage and you cannot go below it”.

“You know the power going in, you know which components are involved, so straightaway you can see if there will be a major issue”, he explained.

At MSI HQ, our young lady guide wasn't sure how close our lens could get to the thermal testing equipment, so we leaned in and asked her to keep a look out. You can get an idea of the ovens-n-fridges room from this shot. Products are constantly tested – even after sale (returned product gets tested the most) – to see what the engineering teams can learn and improve upon for the next spin.

“Next you need to know which technologies you will be using”, said Alex. “That means getting all of the most up to date roadmap information together, then speaking with your design and engineering teams to see when they will be ready for MP [Mass Production – Ed]”.

“Around 5 or 6 years ago, we were following a mass-market strategy, but that changed”, he told us.

Eric Kau (VP for MSI's notebook division) and his team, came to the conclusion that it was not possible to compete with cheap designs built from the lowest quality components.

Strangely, Samsung and Sony seem to have hit issues of their own – and subsequently landed on the same conclusion. But it has taken them 5 years longer than MSI to realise the challenge.

Next, we asked Alex why market positioning is so important.

“Well, we have dedicated ourselves to constant innovation – to be first to market with the latest technologies – and to try and sell out of stock before that technology becomes old”, he told KitGuru. “That way, we can avoid having a channel over-stocking problem”.

Sounds like paradise – so it can't be easy. How do you go around achieving a complete sell-through?

“Achieving a complete sell-through means accurately predicting when we will launch – and what technologies will be available at that time”, said Alex. “If you can get the latest technology to market first, with an attractive feature set and competitive price – then selling out is possible”.

“That ability to sell out all of your stock is the 3rd guidance in our business process”, said Alex.

Given the way that MSI's GT72 sold out – solely based on pre-orders, even though it was priced at £2,300 – seems to show the strategy working. Here's a shot of Sam Chern with Alex Lin (right). They seem very happy with the results of the new strategy.

.KitGuru says: MSI would not be drawn on which of their competitors make money in the notebook space, but they believe that – with their new strategy – they are one of the only profitable players in the market.

At the Digital Seasons event in London's Montcalm hotel, an array of tech companies attempted to woo the audience with their latest and greatest innovations. KitGuru was on hand to sip the Chardonnay on your behalf and filter the presentations to find the most interesting.

Around the back of Marble Arch, we followed the signage into the basement ballroom of the hotel and began scanning for cool stuff.

One company certainly stood out straight away, because any Mac user looking at the Parallels stand would have thought the presentation was sacrilege.

Sascha Uhl, business development guru for Parallels, explained that his company is a world leader in allowing Windows software to run on a Mac.

Windows software on a Mac? Er… OK.

“Other companies do this, but the level of integration achieved by Parallels unparalleled”, according to Sascha – pointing to his promotional wares.

Digital-Seasons-Parallels-Sascha-Uhl-Sachets-KitGuru

“We already have complete integration for Yosemite”, he explained. “Even the latest calling features, exclusive to the latest Mac OS, are available to Windows running on the Mac”.

He then proceeded to demonstrate clicking on a phone number on a web site, in a Windows application, running in a window on Yosemite – which then kicked off a phone call on the iPhone in this pocket.

Pretty cool demonstration, but why would anyone want to put Windows software on to a Mac? What's the motivation.

Sascha explained that “Most people come from a PC background but, when it comes to mobile phones, they think the iPhone is cool. When they come to replace their laptop etc, they think ‘Wow, OK, I will get an Apple' – but they are totally unfamiliar with most of the software”.

“In this situation”, he continued, “They want the familiarity of their existing apps, at least at the beginning, so they buy Parallels for £55 and they are sorted”.

Digital-Seasons-Parallels-Sascha-Uhl-Demonstration-KitGuru

KitGuru says: We are struggling to get our heads around this one, because the Mac users we know have made a deliberate effort to turn from the Microsoft path. But Sascha's stand was quite big – so someone must be spending the money for an emulator – and the Yosemite integration means they have an active development team.

Let us know what you think about Windows software on a Mac over on Facebook.

It seems like only yesterday that we were all happy with a 1TB spinning hard drive. Then the technologies around solid state drives dropped to the point where ‘working 100% on memory' became viable – at least for the rich and famous. So how much should you spend on the SSD for your next rig and how much will you need to compromise on space? KitGuru takes a step back with surprise.

Crucial is one of those brands that makes the chips that go onto the memory boards as well as the complete package.

As such, it will always have a price advantage that only Samsung, Hynix and Toshiba etc can enjoy.

Still, the latest offer to drop into KitGuru's spam box needed a double take, just to see if they were serious.

Maybe it's a slow drive, we wondered. Nope. The packaging claims 550MB/sec read and 500MB/sec write, which if proven would put it toward the upper end of the performance echelon.

Did we read the size wrong? Nope. This is a that offers the modern version of 512GB.

We can't see an issue. This is a full speed 512GB SSD, from Crucial, for £144.99.

But we might predict a price war off the back of this move.

Crucial-MX100-512GB-KitGuru

KitGuru says: When we spoke with SanDisk at Computex and they showed us a 4TB drive – with a roadmap for much more to follow – we knew that today's popular drives would have to drop in price. But if drives in the 512GB range settle at just over £100 in the next 6 months, what market would there be for 64/128GB drives and why wouldn't every laptop have one?

How anyone gets a camera in and out of a major organisation like Foxconn is a miracle.

The same is probably true for Apple HQ (although we have never tried!)

If an opportunity were to present itself, you would have to be SO FAST it's unreal.

Apologies in advance for the image quality – but this is not the kind of shot that Tim Cook will set up for us with perfect studio lighting…

Remember, we're not talking swanky renderings (3rd party or Apple original). We're talking about a shot of the actual product.

In the meantime, ladies and gentlemen, we present the Apple iPhone 6…
