The Elder Scrolls Online doesn't often make headlines, but the MMO is still going strong and is continuing to get major expansions and updates each year. In a couple of months time, the latest expansion, High Isle, will be launching and to help players catch up on story content, Zenimax is giving the previous Morrowind DLC to all players for free.

Starting this week, ESO players new and old can explore the Morrowind DLC for free. The expansion has a full campaign focused on the home of the Dark Elves. High Isle ties in with the events that took place in this previous expansion somehow, although the full details have not yet been revealed.

Zenimax does say that Morrowind will remain unlocked and free for all ESO players for “the foreseeable future”, so there is the possibility that this gets revoked for new accounts eventually, but for now, anyone jumping into the game can play that expansion's content for free.

If you're planning on jumping in to catch up in time for the new expansion, then you've got plenty of time. The High Isle expansion does not release until the 6th of June. A free prologue chapter will be made available to all players shortly before launch, giving you a taste of the new storyline ahead.

KitGuru Says: I've been getting back into ESO recently and I must say, I'm very impressed with how far the game has come at this point. Are any of you thinking of jumping back into ESO this year for the next expansion?

The day has finally arrived with The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited launching on the Xbox One and the PS4, making it one of the first high-budget MMO titles to launch on consoles. However, it has not been without problems as buyers have reported facing login issues on launch day.

The ESO Forums are currently filled with complaints from day one buyers who have not been able to log in since the title's launch at midnight today (9th of June). These issues seem to be affecting both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 players as well.

teso-e1432654414988

As you would imagine, those who stayed up late last night hoping to play at release are quite annoyed. The developers at Zenimax are working on resolving issues but it is a shame that the first big console MMO launch has had to fail like this.

Now this isn't to say that nobody is getting online, there are users currently enjoying the game but this issue seems to be quite prevalent.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: The launch day experience for an MMO is pretty important. Hopefully these issues can be resolved quickly so that the day one buyers can play properly. Have any of you guys tried ESO since it dropped its subscription? I'm quite interested in seeing how it plays on a console myself.

The Elder Scrolls Online will be hitting consoles soon. Previous PC owners can still take advantage of the account transfer offer and while the game isn't due out until June, invites for the closed beta have been sent out to a limited number of people.

The beta will run from the 23rd of April until the 27th, which is quite short, especially for a game that is so big. Characters made during the beta period will not carry over to the final game, which is common with these things. Those who do have access are free to record, stream and share their gameplay.

elder-scrolls-online-screenshot-005-600x375

Now for those looking to try The Elder Scrolls Online on console, you may need to clear some hard drive space as it is going to be a massive 65GB install, which you will notice, is 15GB bigger than you can actually fit on to a standard blu ray disc.

As a result, those who purchase a physical copy will have to sit through a 15GB day one patch before they can play. This could increase depending on how many changes are made following the short beta testing period. The game officially launches on the 9th of June for the Xbox One and PS4. A subscription is no longer required to play so if you own the game on PC, you can currently play without paying any extra.

KitGuru Says: I'm really interested to see how The Elder Scrolls Online will play on a console. Traditionally, MMOs have been built for PCs but Zenimax has really taken their time with the console version. Could this game help MMOs break in to the console market? If they adopted a similar control system to Dragon Age Inquisition then I can see it going down quite well.

The day has finally arrived, The Elder Scrolls Online has now transformed and re-launched as ‘The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited’, dropping the required subscription fee, meaning that you can now play the game as much as you want after buying it, without paying any extra.

Much like DC Universe Online or Star Wars: The Old Republic, ESO will carry an optional subscription fee, giving subs a chunk of free in-game currency each month, access to all future DLC and a 10 per cent boost to XP progression.

The new business model should make the game more attractive to those that quit playing shortly after release, or even those who had yet to buy the game at all.

In addition to the rebranding, the game has a new trailer, detailing all of the game changing systems added to the MMO since launch. It really is quite different in comparison to its launch state, so it might be worth revisiting if you quit playing soon after launch.

This also paves the way for the console launch in June. For more information on Tamriel Unlimited, the Crown Store and the ESO Plus subscription, you can check out the FAQ, HERE.

It has long been rumored that The Elder Scrolls Online will go free to play eventually but that day may come sooner rather than later as Zenimax Online has removed one of the subscription options available for the MMO.

Those looking to subscribe can now only choose between 30 day and 90 day options, whereas you used to be able to subscribe for 180 days. This could just be a simple case of the 6 month option not selling very well but many are starting to believe that this may be a prelude to a change in the game's business strategy.

teso

Other MMOs have removed subscription options before hopping on the Free to Play bandwagon in the past. A move to the Free to Play business model may also open the game up to a wider audience, including many of those that refuse to pay subscription fees but may very well buy a micro-transaction or two.

Star Wars: The Old Republic did this a few years back, which has arguably boosted the game's popularity. It is a little early to tell for now but this may be a sign of things to come. The change over to free to play could also coincide with the game's delayed launch on the Xbox One and PS4.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Many critics and gamers alike thought that ESO should be a free to play game right from the start. The business model can work very well in some cases, just as long as the developers are smart and don't mess with the game's progression pace too much. Do you guys think ESO will go free to play later this year? Would you give it another shot if it did?

The Elder Scrolls Online hasn't been the most critically acclaimed MMO in recent years but maybe over time it will improve. Zenimax is due to release a big content update later this week, adding in a new adventure zone as well as new monsters.

The Craglorn update was announced to be coming last month and is the first wave of future content adding updates for the game. This month's update is aimed at higher level players to give them more to do later on in the game. Creative Director, Paul Sage, gave some details away upon announcement, saying: “There's a lot of different monsters we throw at you and, of course, there are boss monsters that have interesting tactics you haven't encountered anywhere in the game before.”

The Elder Scrolls Online was released last month for the PC but the console versions of the subscription based MMO were delayed until later this year. However, it might be for the best as when the console games launch, Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild quest lines will be added to the game.

The Elder Scrolls Online launched on the PC  just over a month ago and the console version of the game was due to release next month, however, it looks like the game might have been delayed by half a year according to ESO's FAQ, which has since been deleted.

The now deleted FAQ said: “The Elder Scrolls Online officially launched on April 4, 2014 on PC and Mac. While it has become clear that our planned June release of the console versions isn't going to be possible, we have made great progress, we have concluded that we'll need about six more months to ensure we deliver the experience our fans expect and deserve.”

The Elder Scrolls MMO has faced a series of problems on the PC since launch, in-fact Zenimax went ahead and gave all current subscribers an extra free 5 days for the game but that doesn't help the fact that problems that have existed since beta still need to be fixed.

The biggest bug so far has been the money spamming bug which allowed users to exploit the guild banking system in order to dupe items and make infinite amounts of cash. Porting an MMO over to a console is probably a tricky job, most games in the genre are designed for use with a keyboard and mouse rather than a controller and there's no word on whether or not the console versions will link in with the PC, which would pose a whole new set of problems to overcome.

Zenimax or Bethesda are yet to confirm whether or not the six month delay posting was a mistake or fact but since it was posted on the official game website, there's a good chance that it's true.

KitGuru Says: I was having fun with TESO at first but I found that earning gold was far too difficult, enemies only drop one or two coins at a time and the same goes for bosses. I'd only managed to make 3000 gold in my first ten hours or so, which makes buying a horse pretty much impossible without the Imperial Edition upgrade. There are plenty of things in this MMO that haven't been handled well and it still needs quite a bit of work, so it might be a blessing in disguise for console gamers if the title gets delayed for a bit.

Zenimax is now looking to break its own rules by asking Elder Scrolls Online players to name and shame anyone suspected of  being a gold spammer. Usually, Zenimax prohibits naming suspects but it looks like the publisher needs some help after the guild banking system allowed so many players to get rich quick.

The Bethesda parent company had to disable the guild banking system last week after it neglected to fix a bug that allowed users to duplicate items to sell and profit from it. The bug has since been reported to have been in the game since beta, which isn't a particularly good look for the developer. Since then permanent bans have been threatened rather than resetting the accounts of those who broke the rules.

image_307468_940

However, by the sounds of things, Zenimax is having trouble cracking down on the in-game black market, which has spread to the forum to arrange payment's and dodgy in-game trades:

“We are aware that some forum users have received private messages from gold spammers. We can assure you we are working as quickly as possible to identify and remove these spammers from our forums. We request that anyone who has received a private message they believe to be from a gold spammer to post the sender's username as a comment in this thread. Please note that our Community Code of Conduct does prohibit naming and shaming. However, in an effort to expedite the process of identifying and banning the spammers' accounts, we are making an exception for this situation.”

The company is going to individually investigate each and every account reported, which will likely lead to it wasting a lot of time on false reports. However, it does mean that hopefully, no innocent players will get banned: “We will investigate each alleged spammer account individually to avoid false reports.”

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Zenimax really should have fixed that bug before release. However, at the same time, it should really bring the horse prices down in that game or at least increase the amount of gold players can pick up. I've sunk around 10 hours in to the game and I've only collected 2000 gold, unfortunately for most of us, horses cost 40,000 gold- which is ridiculous. So far the in-game economy has been pretty terrible but hopefully all of these issues can be fixed.

The Elder Scrolls Online faced its first major bug over the weekend which allowed guild members to infinitely duplicate items through the guild banking system. Zenimax has had to shutdown the feature for now while it fixes the error.

Since TESO is an MMO, keeping the economy balanced is very important. Grand Theft Auto Online faced a similar problem during its early days, players were able to generate millions in cash and would then run around servers handing out infinite amounts of money to other players, allowing users to buy whatever they wanted while avoiding missions and micro-transactions.

esodupe_610

Rockstar banned users for abusing the money bug and Zenimax plans on doing the same thing with its game:

“Yesterday, we identified an item duping bug in ESO that some players chose to exploit. We acted quickly, and have since fixed the issue. We have a zero tolerance policy when it comes to abusing exploitable bugs, and those who were found doing so will have their game account permanently banned.”

There is a zero tolerance policy but the decision to permanently ban players has gamers a little torn, some think that permanently banning these players is the only option while others think that a ban may be too harsh and that Zenimax should reset their gold and items instead.
