Despite being 2 decades old, the Monster Hunter franchise only recently became the juggernaut that it is, with Monster Hunter World in particular putting the series on the map for many people – which was then further cemented by the release of Monster Hunter Rise. With so many fans eagerly awaiting the series’ next game, Capcom have now announced their plans for Monster Hunter’s 20th anniversary.

Announced during Capcom’s Tokyo Game Show online program, the publisher said “Dear intrepid hunters, The Monster Hunter series will celebrate its 20th anniversary in March 2024.

We on the Monster Hunter team would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of our players. We have only been able to reach this significant milestone thanks to your support.”

They continue, “With these 20 years of success behind us, we hope to ride this momentum and bring you bigger, better, and even more exciting hunting experiences that will thrill and surprise you. We invite you, dear hunters, to join us on the journey ahead. Happy Hunting!”

With it having been well over 6 years since the original launch of Monster Hunter World, many fans are hoping to see a sequel finally revealed in time for the series’ 20th anniversary. Maybe we’ll get an announcement at The Game Awards? We will have to wait and see what Capcom has planned.

Exoprimal is one of Capcom’s weirder franchises, with the dino mech shooter offering a fast-paced co-op environment in which players must work together to take down an onslaught of highly aggressive dinosaurs. Being a Capcom game, a number of the publisher’s other franchises have been promised to be making an appearance in the game – with the next crossover set to see Chun-Li and co. join the fight.

Making the announcement, Capcom revealed the full list of content set to arrive with the upcoming second season of Exoprimal, saying “Exoprimal Season 2 hits the streets on October 18th with Street Fighter 6 crossover content, a new map, new rigs to customize your gameplay, a new 10-player co-op final mission, and new skins and emotes!”

The new map is known as Ocean Platform and “adds a new combat zone full of precarious pathways, while new rigs for exosuits provide new ways to maneuver around the battle field and neutralize targets.”

Additionally, this 10-player co-op mission “requires that you work together with your former rivals to dreamchieve your goals and reach the end… or be flagged for mandatory retirement.”

While we already knew that Exoprimal would be crossing over with Street Fighter, the only characters previously announced were Ryu and Guile. Now, it has been confirmed that Chun-Li is also set to join the line-up.

Initially dismissed by many upon its reveal, Exoprimal has proven to be a rather fun time, with Capcom correctly supporting the title in the necessary ways to keep it fresh and exciting. It’ll be interesting to see what the Street Fighter crossover ends up looking like exactly.

Tokyo Game Show is a staple of the industry, with primarily Japanese developers taking to the event to reveal new games, offer updates on existing titles and more. Capcom has slowly but surely been teasing its TGS line-up, now revealing that its online showcase will include new details on the much-anticipated Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Capcom page said “Join us next Thursday for our #TGS2023 Capcom Online Program, Sep. 21 3pm BST / 4pm CEST! Get ready for:

  • Dragon’s Dogma 2
  • Resident Evil 4: Separate Ways & VR Mode
  • Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney Trilogy
  • Street Fighter 6
  • Exoprimal”

Capcom’s Online Program was previously already announced, however the line-up of games revealed at the time was much smaller. This marks confirmation that we will be seeing the much-anticipated action RPG Dragon’s Dogma 2 at the showcase – a big deal considering many of the other games listed are already out and available to play.

Of course, it is entirely possible that we will get a few extra surprises, with some even hoping that the next Monster Hunter game might be shown off – though expectations should be kept in check in that regard.

Even without any surprise announcement, it will be exciting to see more from Dragon’s Dogma 2. Hopefully we get a release date, or at least a launch window.

A couple weeks ago Capcom announced their plans for the upcoming Tokyo Game Show, revealing that they would host a “special online program”. Few details were shared at the time, however we now know at least one of the games which will be present both during the showcase and in-person: Dragon’s Dogma 2.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Dragon’s Dogma page said “Dragon's Dogma 2 joins the Capcom lineup at #TGS2023! Tune in to the TGS 2023 Capcom Online Program on 9/21, 7am PT [3pm UK Time] as Director Hideaki Itsuno shares new gameplay and info.”

Additionally, the team confirmed that those who manage to attend the event in person will be able to demo the game (and will even get a goodie bag after the fact).

Initial excitement for Capcom’s TGS showcase was originally rather muted, especially as the few games confirmed to be present included already-released titles such as Street Fighter VI and Exoprimal.

That said, the confirmation that we will get a new look at Dragon’s Dogma 2 makes the 50-minute presentation decidedly more intriguing. Hopefully additional games are announced for the event in the coming weeks.

The Tokyo Game Show is coming up in September and Sega/Atlus have unveiled their plans. Atlus has already announced two new games this year with Persona 5 Tactica and Persona 3 Reload, but it appears that there is even more on the horizon.

Sega and Atlus will host a “special broadcast” at TGS on September 21st at 11AM BST. The stream will be part of a monthly broadcast held on the Sega YouTube channel, so we can expect to see other games from Sega as a whole and not just updates on new or upcoming Atlus titles.

Atlus already has Persona 5 Tactica launching in October and Persona 3 Reload arriving in February 2024. Atlus also has a completely new JRPG in the works, titled Metaphor: ReFantazio, although a release date has not yet been announced.  Additionally, Sega has titles like Sonic Superstars and Yakuza 8 on the way.

Ahead of this year’s event (taking place in September), Capcom have announced their plans for TGS, teasing some of the games set to be showcased,

As reported and translated by Gematsu, Capcom have officially announced their plans for the upcoming event, including both online and in-person showcases.

Tokyo Game Show as a whole begins on the 21st of September and will conclude a couple days later on the 24th. Capcom will be kicking off its own presence at the event with what they’ve called ‘Tokyo Game Show 2023 Capcom Online Special Program’. While very few details were shared, the showcase – which will be streamed on the 21st of September at 11PM JST [3AM UK Time] – is described as follows:

“Get all the latest Capcom news in our pre-recorded stream as part of Tokyo Game Show Online!” In terms of the stream’s runtime, Capcom’s Showcase will clock in at around 50 minutes, meaning it will be one of the publisher’s longer presentations (for comparison, their Summer showcase lasted a little over 30 minutes).

As mentioned, no further details were shared, however based on the games available to play at the event in Tokyo itself, at the very least we will most likely see more from the previously-announced Resident Evil 4 VR mode – perhaps even a release date.

Historically, Capcom’s showcases have not been the most exciting, however there is still typically a decent amount of new information revealed…but maybe don’t have your hopes up for a new mainline Monster Hunter announcement.

Tokyo Game Show is a staple of the industry, with primarily Japanese developers taking to the event to reveal new games, offer updates on titles and more. Ahead of this year’s event (taking place in September), the full line-up of developers and publishers has now been revealed.

Tokyo Game Show is set to take place between the 21st and 24th of September and will be the biggest event in years. Matching the size of the event are the number of developers and publishers set to attend TGS. The full list is highly exhaustive and can be found HERE via a PDF, however some of the more notable attendees include:

  • Bandai Namco
  • Capcom
  • HoYoVerse
  • Koei Tecmo
  • Konami
  • Microsoft – Xbox
  • SEGA / Atlus
  • Square Enix

Kojima Productions will also be at TGS, however only in the merch area – meaning no new announcements. Sony will be present at the event to show off a bunch of indie games, but don’t expect any first-party announcements. Finally, Nintendo will be attending TGS, however their involvement is limited to the business area – so nothing the public will get to see unfortunately.

All that said, TGS 2023 looks set to be huge, and with or without Nintendo and Sony’s involvement we will hopefully get more than our fill of new game announcements.

With each passing year we are seeing the relevance of major annualised gaming events and expos such as E3 dwindle as developers and publishers opt to create their own experiences for significantly cheaper. That said, Tokyo Game Show seems to still be seeing great support from the industry, as the show’s 2023 event has now officially been confirmed and detailed.

As reported by Gematsu, the Computer Entertainment Supplier’s Association officially announced that Tokyo Game Show 2023 will be happening this year and will take place between the 21st and 24th of September. What’s more, the event will be bigger than ever, utilising all of the available halls at the event for the first time in 4 years.

While no publishing partners have been announced yet, the CESA have offered various details on the new and growing initiatives set to take place this year during the event, with the breakdown being as follows:

  • Physical Venue – New areas are set up to meet the expanding game industry. Family and cosplay areas are revived for the first time in four years. Stage events are also refreshed to deliver more enjoyable entertainment.
  • Virtual Venue – The virtual venue “Tokyo Game Show VR” first appeared in 2021. In this third year, visitors can access the venue by smartphones in addition to HMDs and PCs. The world is evolving and powered up.
  • Online – TGS offers online programs again this year. Check out the exhibitors via official streaming programs, and play trial versions of indie games and big-name titles on the special Steam site.

It is also worth noting that the Virtual Venue will persist for a week longer than the in-person event, meaning those interested will have up until the 1st of October to attend. With the likes of E3 struggling to regain its foothold within the industry, it is exciting to see that not only is TGS surviving, but thriving.

Sonic Frontiers is one of the most exciting releases by the blue blur in quite some time, with the open-zone 3D platformer being more ambitious than most previous releases. As part of Tokyo Game Show, a SEGA representative confirmed the various specs for each platform which the game will release on, revealing that you might need to sacrifice quite a bit of resolution in order to play at 60fps on console.

Tokyo Game Show attendee ‘Tadanohi’ took part in the Sonic Frontiers experience available at the convention where they asked a SEGA representative how the game is set to run across the various systems it is launching on.

According to SEGA, Sonic Frontiers will offer two modes on the PS5, with one running the game at 4K and 30fps, and another mode bringing the resolution all the way down to just 1080p, though will boost the frame rate to 60fps.

PlayStation 4 players meanwhile will only have one option: 1080p at 30fps, and the Switch will unsurprisingly drop the resolution to 720p and 30fps. Unfortunately, we do not know how Xbox systems will perform, though it is likely to be somewhat similar to PlayStation systems (with some potential small variances).

Of course, it is worth noting that in today’s day and age, a large number of games offer dynamic resolutions, with others utilising many different forms of anti-aliasing and upscaling in order to maintain a pleasing image regardless of resolution. Still, it is good to have ballpark figures for what fans can expect when Sonic Frontiers launches on the 8th of November.

During Capcom’s recent Tokyo Game Show livestream, the publisher gave Resident Evil fans another look at the much-anticipated RE4 remake, while also showing off the upcoming Winters’ Expansion for Resident Evil Village. Alongside all this, Capcom confirmed that a Resident Evil Showcase is taking place next month.

Though no exact date has been given, Capcom announced that we will get a bespoke Resident Evil showcase sometime next month in October. So far, the publisher has only confirmed that more information on the upcoming Resident Evil 4 remake will be present, with no other details given.

We saw quite a few announcements at the most recent Capcom TGS showcase, and so it will be interesting to see what else is planned for the upcoming RE showcase.

As mentioned, Capcom’s TGS showcase included many Resident Evil announcements, giving us a look at the upcoming Winters’ Expansion for Resident Evil Village, which will not only add story content in the form of the ‘Shadows of Rose DLC’, but will also include the fan-favourite mercenaries mode AND will add a third-person mode to the entire game – for those who prefer such RE experiences.

Other announcements included the fact that Resident Evil: Village is coming to Apple’s Mac devices, while Nintendo Switch is poised to get cloud versions of RE2, RE3, RE7: Biohazard and RE: Village.

With all of these announcements out of the way, it will be exciting to see what Capcom has planned for the upcoming bespoke Resident Evil showcase. We will have to wait and see.

After many years of waiting, Resident Evil 4 fans are finally getting the remake they have been hoping for. Originally announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Capcom has now revealed that the much-anticipated title will also be coming to the last-gen PlayStation 4.

Announced during Tokyo Game show 2022, Capcom revealed that Resident Evil 4 Remake will not be exclusive to current-gen systems as was originally announced, but will also come to PlayStation 4. Interestingly, the game will not be making its way to the Xbox One family of devices, likely due to the console’s relative rarity in the publisher’s home country of Japan.

With Resident Evil 4 originally announced exclusively for current-gen, it will be interesting to see what the PS4 version ends up looking and running like. What footage we have seen so far from RE4 does not look too dissimilar graphically to previous-gen Resident Evil titles, and so it is likely to be relatively uncompromised even on the now nearly 9-year-old hardware.

All that being said, it is interesting to see the game coming to last-gen systems. It’ll be curious to know whether this choice was a creative one, or whether it was due to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S being so hard to find.

One of the most interesting and new aspects coming with Street Fighter 6 is the game’s new Battle Hub, bringing the close-knit fighting game community even closer with a centralised social hub. As part of Tokyo Game Show, Capcom announced that fans will be able to partake in a closed beta for Street Fighter 6’s Battle Hub early next month.

Taking place from the 7th of October until the 10th, PS5, Xbox Series and PC players will all be able to get together and partake in some fighting action when the crossplay-compatible closed beta test goes live. Though the game is also coming to PlayStation 4, owners of the last-gen system will unfortunately be unable to access the beta.

Those who do gain access will be able to enjoy a great deal of content, with Capcom confirming that the beta will allow you to create a character; participate in Ranked Matches, Casual Matches, Battle Hub Matches and Open Tournaments while also offering a Training Mode; a ‘Hub Good Shop;’ Extreme Battles; a Game Centre; Daily Challenges; and even a DJ booth and Photo Spot.

8 characters will be available to play as throughout the beta, namely: Luke, Jamie, Ryu, Chun-Li, Guile, Kimberly, Juri and Ken, with Capcom releasing 6 stages to play on: Metro City Downtown, Genbu Temple, Carrier Byron Taylor, Tian Hong Yuan, The Macho Ring and Training Room.

Those who wish to sign up to the closed beta can do so HERE.

Both games use the same engine as recent Yakuza titles and have a similar level of graphical fidelity, so if you played any of the Yakuza games before, Judgement should run just as well. The game puts players in the shoes of a detective looking to solve a murder. Combat plays out similarly to previous Yakuza titles, with an action-based system and character upgrades available.

Judgement began as a PS4 exclusive, but later expanded to Xbox too. We learned last year that Sega was planning a PC release, but an issue with the talent agency representing the game's lead actor meant that Sega had to delay its plans.

Sega has never publicly confirmed the dispute, but it seems that the company got all the permission it needed eventually. Just like the Yakuza games, Judgement and Lost Judgement already have positive ratings on Steam.

Just as promised, Xbox appeared at the Tokyo Game Show today armed with a few new announcements from its partnerships in Japan. A number of beloved JRPGs are heading to Xbox for the first time, in addition to a few of Japan's best fighting games.

The show started off with a reminder that Persona 5 Royal is heading to Xbox and Xbox Game Pass in October. We quickly got a few surprise announcements though, starting off with confirmation that Blazblue Cross Tag Battle and Guilty Gear Survive will be heading to Xbox consoles and Game Pass in Spring 2023.

As of today, Ni No Kuni Remastered is also launching on Xbox, and its sequel, Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom, is coming to Xbox in 2023. Visual novel hit, Danganrompa V3, is also heading to Xbox Game Pass today.

The stream also brought a new look at upcoming Overwatch 2 hero, Kiriko, a new trailer for Forza Horizon 5's Hot Wheels expansion, a new trailer for Eiyuden Chronicle: 100 Heroes, which is coming to Xbox Game Pass in 2023, and a new trailer for a game called Palworld, a Pokémon-inspired game, often referred to as Pokémon with Guns.

The last major announcement from the show was confirmation that Deathloop is now available on Xbox and downloadable through Game Pass for Console and PC. If you stick around to the very end of the stream, you'll see a very nice mashup trailer of Japanese games coming to Xbox over the next year.

Ahead of the Tokyo Games Show, EA has announced a surprising new partnership. EA is teaming up with Japan's Koei Tecmo and Omega Force to create a brand new fantasy IP, aiming to take on Capcom's Monster Hunter series.

Omega Force is primarily known for the Warriors series of games, including the likes of Dynasty Warriors, Samurai Warriors and spin-off titles like Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors. This new IP will be published under the EA Originals label, similarly to titles like It Takes Two and Knockout City.

Speaking on the new partnership, Koei Tecmo VP, Yosuke Hayashi, said: “The EA team fully embraces our creative independence and have become invaluable partners offering both development and publishing support. Adding the global resources of EA with our own will help us introduce a new kind of hunting game to a global audience of players and expand our reach into global markets.”

According to EA's Jeff Gamon, the developers have “elevated the hunting genre to the next level”. For now, we aren't actually being shown the game, but EA promises to reveal it later this month, likely at TGS.

The Tokyo Game Show is coming up in just a few weeks time and the schedule has now been revealed. Interestingly, Konami will have a 45-minute segment of the show, in which it will announce a new game.

Konami's interest in getting back into video game development and reviving dormant IPs has been well documented in leaks and rumours over the past year. It has been claimed that Konami is currently has new Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania and Silent Hill games in the works across multiple studios, including some third-party developers.

While these rumoured titles are obvious contenders for a TGS reveal, but according to a source speaking with VGC, the reveal won't be quite that big. According to their publishing source, this is likely going to be an announcement of a smaller project.

The Tokyo Game Show begins on the 15th of September. Konami's reveal will be taking place on the 16th. Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Konami recently announced plans make a ton of classic games available once again, which garnered a pretty good reception. Could we be heading into the Konami redemption arc?

For years now we have been hearing leaks and rumours surrounding the yet-to-be-announced Silent Hill franchise revival, though publisher Konami has remained entirely silent on the matter. That being said, according to one leaker, we will finally see Silent Hill officially announced at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show.

This rumour comes from well-known leaker DuskGolem, who has in the past discussed the elusive Silent Hill. According to DuskGolem, though admittedly speculation, they strongly believe that Tokyo Game Show will be the place and time when we might finally see the return of Silent Hill, saying:

“literally every company I know is involved with Silent Hill is present at the next Tokyo Game Show, for the first time all together at once, and it includes companies who it's their first ever TGS, just call me a tad suspicious.”

Speculation aside, DuskGolem later offered some updated information regarding the game’s developmental structure, stating that “Sony's still involved” in some capacity as well as the fact that:

“this is developed by more than one studio, it's a joint production. What I will say is that Masahiro Ito [Silent Hill 2’s director] is 100% working on this, I have some art from him from this project to prove it but I'll share that later as most of the art shows maybe a bit too much.”

Tokyo Game Show is taking place from the 15th to the 18th of September, meaning that if DuskGolem is correct, then we don't have too much longer to wait to finally find out what the future of Silent Hill is.

Ever since its announcement last year, there has been a lot of talk around Final Fantasy 16 and just how far along in development it is. While we had to wait many, many years for Final Fantasy XV after its initial announcement, Square Enix is looking to go from announcement to release much quicker this time around, and so far, all signs are pointing towards 2022.

During the Tokyo Game Show at the weekend, Square Enix provided a quick update on Final Fantasy 16. While the game was not shown during the event, producer, Naoki Yoshida, explained that the game is mostly content complete, with the team now working on just a handful of quality improvements.

Final Fantasy 16's main scenario is complete, with the team now just locking in a few remaining side quests and focusing on polish and quality updates. As reported by VGC, this includes finalising character models.

Final Fantasy 16 was announced last year as a PlayStation 5 exclusive, although the game is also expected to come to PC at a later date. While no official release date has been announced, the game is expected to release in the second half of 2022.

Earlier this year, Square Enix announced Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin, an action-focused spin-off to the long-running JRPG franchise. Now at the Tokyo Game Show, Square Enix has shown the game off once again, while also announcing a release date and a new demo version coming this year.

Stanger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin already had a limited time demo on consoles earlier this year. A second demo is now on the way, which will include multiplayer/co-op features, currently playable on Xbox Series X/S and PS5 consoles. The new demo also incorporates feedback from the earlier demo, so returning players should expect some changes.

Final Fantasy Origin is being developed by Team Ninja, the same studio behind the excellent Nioh games. Barring any delays, the game should release on the 18th of March 2022 for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 and PC.

The game itself is inspired by Final Fantasy 1, so expect some settings and story elements to tie into the original game, and possibly even some returning characters.

Just as promised, today during the Tokyo Game Show, Capcom shared more on its future plans for Monster Hunter Rise. The game initially released on Nintendo Switch back in March, but in January 2022, the game will also land on PC, ahead of its first major expansion in the summer.

Monster Hunter Rise will release on PC via Steam on the 12th of January 2022. The PC version will include several enhancements, including support for 4K resolution and ultrawide displays, high frame rates and improved graphics over the Switch version. Excitingly, Capcom also pointed out that it has put extra work into optimising the game for keyboard and mouse controls, so those who aren't a fan of gamepads should be able to jump right in without hassle.

The PC version will also include in-game voice chat, so you'll be able to chat with your fellow hunters while taking on challenging monsters. While the full release won't be coming until January, we'll get a chance to play the PC version this year, as a demo will be releasing on Steam on the 13th of October.

The initial release is just the beginning, as Capcom also has a slew of free updates planned too. We've already seen some of these with the Nintendo Switch version, with updates including new hunts, armour and weapon sets, cosmetics and more. There will also be a major expansion in Summer 2022 – Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, which will release simultaneously on Switch and PC.

KitGuru Says: Capcom hasn't mentioned anything about save transfers from the Switch to the PC version, so it's looking likely that those jumping platforms will need to start a new character. Are any of you planning on picking up Monster Hunter Rise once it comes to PC?

Xbox held its Tokyo Game Show livestream earlier this morning and while the event was light on new reveals, it did bring some exciting announcements for Xbox Game Pass. To cap off September, Game Pass subscribers will be getting two excellent Japanese games – Scarlet Nexus and AI: The Somnium Files.

Scarlet Nexus was initially revealed in 2020, as Microsoft was ramping up for the Xbox Series X launch. The game released earlier this year to great reviews and now, Bandai Namco's “brainpunk” action-RPG will be available to all Xbox Game Pass subscribers later today.

The other game coming today is AI: The Somnium Files, a game that initially released on PC, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch back in 2019. Now, the game is coming to Xbox platforms, as well as Xbox Game Pass across all platforms. While this title may have flown under the radar for a lot of people, it was one of the best games to release in 2019, offering a dark, futuristic detective story where you're tasked with solving a series of murders using the help of AI and a machine that lets you root around a person's memories to unlock information they may not be telling you.

Both Scarlet Nexus and AI: The Somnium Files will be available on Xbox Game Pass later today. Scarlet Nexus will be playable across console, PC and cloud, it is unclear if AI: The Somnium Files will also be available across all Game Pass platforms, but at the very least, it will be available on console.

KitGuru Says: Scarlet Nexus has been rumoured to be coming to Xbox Game Pass for quite some time, so it's great to finally see it available. AI: The Somnium Files was a complete surprise. Will any of you be playing one of these games now that they're joining Xbox Game Pass?

Tokyo Game Show is just a few days away, and while some developers and publishers will over-promise and over-hype their conferences, Square Enix has opted to give prospective watchers a complete look at the games line-up, announcing what appears to be a rather lackluster conference.

Ahead of the ‘Square Enix Presents’ Tokyo Game Show event taking place on the 1st of October, the publisher released a list of all the games that fans can expect to see showcased. The full list of games are:

  • Actraiser Renaissance
  • Chocobo GP
  • FINAL FANTASY VII THE FIRST SOLDIER
  • FORSPOKEN
  • Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy
  • STRANGER OF PARADISE FINAL FANTASY ORIGIN
  • TRIANGLE STRATEGY
  • Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars
  • Forspoken
  • Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin

Though Square Enix does seem to be showing off a decent chunk of games, many of the titles have previously been marketed, with some – such as Stranger of Paradise – having already seen entire demos released.

Furthermore, games including Triangle Strategy, Forspoken, Chocobo GP and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy have all been shown off as recently as last week. All this is to say that while Square Enix are undoubtedly working on many major and unannounced projects, TGS does not look to be the place to go for new reveals. Evenso, hopefully the publisher manages to sneak in one surprise announcement.

Recently we reported that SEGA announced that it would be revealing a brand new RPG at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show. With the publisher owning so many iconic RPG franchises, fans began to speculate about what the game could be – from a new Valkyria Chronicles to Persona 6. Unfortunately, it looks like it will be neither of these, as the game is said to be a mobile title.

In the wake of the speculation surrounding what this new RPG could be from SEGA, the publisher went ahead and released a new teaser website alongside a trailer. While this teaser has given little away, it has revealed that this new RPG will be coming to mobile devices and that it will feature a non-linear story allowing players to make story-affecting choices.

As translated by IGN, the teaser trailer (which is only available in Japanese) features a voiceover explaining that the team behind the game wants to “make something different to the linear stories prevalent in RPGs, and take inspiration from tabletop RPGs that could take the form of one-off experiences without a set ending,” with the goal being to “release a smartphone RPG where the player gets to decide how the story unfolds through their choices.”

While some may be disappointed to see the game turn out to be a mobile effort, the concept art released so far does show off an interesting looking world, with a larger scope than some may be expecting. With all of the early Final Fantasy games available on mobile, and games such as Genshin Impact being huge on the platform, it is entirely possible that this new RPG could be just as big as any console release…maybe even bigger. Time will tell.

Tokyo Game Show will see its return at the end of the month, featuring some of the biggest names in gaming, but in particular with a focus on Japanese developers and publishers. Being one of the biggest, SEGA is confirmed to be making an appearance at the show, with the owner of Atlus announcing that it will show off a brand new RPG at the event.

As reported by Gematsu, the online schedule for the upcoming Tokyo Game Show was updated. Titled, “Sega News Tokyo Game Show 2021 Special,” the showcase was described as follows: “The Tokyo Game Show 2021 Online special for Sega News, Sega’s game news variety program, featuring information on the latest titles from Sega and Atlus. Please look forward to the announcement of a new Sega RPG.”

SEGA has amassed a massive number of franchises over the course of its 60 year history. When it comes to RPGs however, the list is cut down significantly, allowing us to narrow down the announcement to a list of potential suspects.

While the publisher isn’t as well known for its RPGs as Square Enix or Bandai Namco, SEGA does own a number of rather large RPG franchises, including the ‘Shining’ franchise; Etrian Odyssey; Phantasy Star; Valkyria Chronicles; Sakura Wars; and most famously the Persona and Shin Megami Tensei franchises.

Atlus has previously teased that a Persona event will be taking place this month, however with how big the franchise is now, it would likely be featured as part of a separate showcase. Still, the prospect of a new RPG from SEGA is exciting, and who knows, maybe Persona 6 will be announced here after all! The Tokyo Game Show will be taking place from the 30th of September to the 3rd of October.

Final Fantasy 16 was announced last year as part of a PlayStation 5 showcase and since then, we've heard that the game is quite far into development and could release in 2022. With that in mind, there has been some expectation that we'll see some gameplay footage some time this year, but it sounds like that won't be happening at the Tokyo Game Show.

During a recent livestream, Final Fantasy 16 producer, Naoki Yoshida, explained that while the development team wants to show the game off at the Tokyo Game Show this year, it is unlikely that they will be able to meet the deadline.

As translated by Siliconera, Yoshida said: “We really want to show something for Tokyo Game Show 2021, but we probably can’t make that deadline. We definitely want to show it, but isn’t it better if when we do, you’re able to play it right after? I personally don’t like it when small bits of info is release to string people along. I talked about this with the team and director Takai-san. We want to reveal something where people will say, ‘I want to play it now! Release it now!’ And we can reply, ‘sure, here you go!’”

Yoshida also acknowledged that Square Enix definitely wants the game to be shown too, and while development is going well, the team does not want to show it until it can reach a certain level of quality, which means it will likely miss TGS, which takes place from September 30th until October 3rd.

The Tekken series has long stood as one of the core video game fighting franchises since its inception in 1994. Despite being over 25 years old, it appears as though the series’ popularity has not yet waned, as the latest entry – Tekken 7 – has now officially surpassed 6 million copies sold, bringing the entire franchise’s sales figures to over 50 million.

Announced during Tokyo Game Show, Katsuhiro Harada, the Game Director for Tekken revealed that “TEKKEN7 had achieved Over 6 million sales!” adding that “We recorded Over 50 million copies sales for the series.”

Tekken 7 launched on consoles in 2017. Within two months the game had already sold 2 million copies. This sales success continued, with the most recent figures prior putting sales at 5 million copies back in December 2019.

The game’s continued success is no doubt pushed by the developer’s own support for Tekken 7. To date, the game has received 3 seasons of content, with the 4th season recently being shown off at TGS.

What will be interesting to see is whether Tekken 7 manages to outsell Tekken 3, which currently holds the record for the best selling game in the franchise. With 8.5 million copies sold, Tekken 3 is not only the best selling Tekken game, but the 3rd best selling fighting game of all time. Tekken 5 is right underneath it, with 8.2 million copies sold, with the two best-selling being Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (20 million), followed by Super Smash Bros. Brawl (13.32 million).

The Dynasty Warriors franchise has long had a committed fanbase, thanks to the unique sense of satisfaction gained from taking on hundreds of enemies at any given time. Still, over the years, the franchise appears to have turned stale in the eyes of fans, with the most recent mainline entry, Dynasty Warriors 9, being particularly panned. During Tokyo Game Show, Koei Tecmo announced the next game in the series, Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires, which aims to fix some of the previous game’s failings.

The Empires sub franchise has often focused more heavily on strategy when compared to the mainline entries. Still, these games would often see improvements over the mainline entry which it is based off of. Such is the case with Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires, which will not feature an open world.

Though many games would often tout open-world environments as a selling point, the open-world in Dynasty Warriors 9 was heavily criticised for its emptiness and lack of function in terms of adding any value to the gameplay.

Though it has yet to receive a full release date, Dynasty Warriors 9: Empires will launch some time in Early 2021 for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One Consoles, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

The description for the game reads as follows: “Combining the 1 vs. 1,000 action of DYNASTY WARRIORS with the addition of strategic elements, including unit command, DYNASTY WARRIORS 9 Empires sets players on a quest to conquer ancient China by both sword and strategy. Powerful Siege Battles enable commanders to deploy units to capture strategic points on the map like castles.”

”Experiencing high-stakes fights at every turn, players can now take control of these central points on the battlefield through the use of fire attacks or other stratagem, siege weapons, and, at times, simply by force as commanders execute their strategies and attack enemy troops by issuing vital commands to units throughout the skirmish.”

NieR Replicant Ver. 1.22474487139 serves as a remake/remaster to the predecessor of the critically acclaimed NieR: Automata. Announced back in March via a teaser trailer, very little was known regarding the depth of the remake, nor its planned release schedule. As part of Tokyo Games Show, Square Enix held a NieR-related panel, revealing not only a first look at gameplay for Replicant, but also the game’s release date.

NieR Replicant Ver. 1.22474487139 will launch on the 22nd of April 2021 for PC, PS4, and Xbox One in Japan, with its Western release coming just one day later on the 23rd. The game’s 22nd of April 2021 launch will coincide with the original game’s 11th anniversary.

Despite releasing after the launch of the next generation PlayStation 5 and Xbox Seres S/X, there is currently no word on whether these systems will see any enhancements.

Alongside the release date, Square Enix shared a first look at gameplay including the revamped combat system, which appears to be much closer in nature to that of its sequel NieR: Automata. Unlike Automata however, which was developed by PlatinumGames, NieR Replicant is being developed by Toylogic, who have been involved to some degree with the development of The Evil Within, Kid Icarus: Uprising, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl.

That being said, the Director for NieR Replicant continues to be Yoko Taro, meaning that the vision for this remake, the original NieR, and Automata should all remain consistent. With NieR Replicant Ver. 1.22474487139 still over half a year away however, hopefully fans will get the chance to see more in the coming months. The full panel can be viewed HERE.

The Taiwanese game ratings board is quickly becoming one of the prime ways that video games are being leaked to the public. Now, NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… has been rated, suggesting that the remake/remaster of the cult PS3 title could be on its way soon.

Discovered by Gematsu, the Taiwanese ratings board has officially rated NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139… for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, suggesting that the game might be launching some time in the near future.

When the NieR Replicant remake/remaster was first revealed in March, Square Enix announced that the game would be coming to current-gen systems, suggesting perhaps that it would be arriving in 2020. Since then however there has been very little news on the game – aside from some screenshots and concept art.

Of course, with COVID-19 and the global pandemic, many games saw significant delays, both internally and publicly. It was beginning to look as though NieR had suffered the same fate. With its recent rating however, the precursor to 2017’s critically acclaimed NieR: Automata may make 2020 after all.

Square Enix has announced that it will be present at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show. While its official line-up announcement includes games such as Babylon’s Fall and Final Fantasy XIV Online, NieR Replicant is nowhere to be found.

That being said, it is still entirely possible that fans will get more information on the much-anticipated game at TGS, which will take place between the 24th and 27th of September. Hopefully we will find our more in the ‘NieR’ future.

Tokyo Game Show recently unveiled its line-up of showcases which are set to go live when the event begins later this month on the 24th of September. With Microsoft headlining the event with a 50-minute showcase, many fans hoped to see more news regarding the impending Xbox Series X (and inevitable Series S). Unfortunately, this won’t be the case.

Sharing the disappointing news on its blog, Microsoft announced that “Xbox will take part in this year’s event with a virtual showcase via livestream for Japanese audiences from 9 p.m. JST on 9/24,” claiming that “our presence at Tokyo Game Show will celebrate the visionary creators and vibrant players in the region. Tune in to see the latest on games, content from our Japanese partners and players, and further details on Xbox services.”

Microsoft then (disappointingly) revealed that there will not be any next-gen news during its 50-minute long TGS showcase, definitively saying :

“What to expect:

  • A celebration of Japanese game creators
  • The latest updates coming to Microsoft Flight Simulator on Xbox Game Pass for PC, Windows 10 and Steam
  • Creativity from the Japanese Minecraft creator community
  • A review of first- and third-party announcements from recent months
  • No new next-gen news”

As November inches closer and closer with no price nor release date for the Series X, let alone an announcement of the Series S, it begs the question as to just when Microsoft will provide these much-anticipated details – as well a look at many more of its next-gen titles. Time is running out.
