Ubisoft has been working away on a couple of spin-offs in The Division franchise in recent years. These games have taken a while to hit the market but it looks like that will finally change soon. The Division: Heartland has now been submitted to ratings boards, indicating that a release is just around the corner.

The Division: Heartland is set in the fictional town of Silver Creek in the rural US Midwest. In this game, players will enter a town at the centre of a violent conflict between rogue Division agents and a group of survivors. The game will focus on battles against AI-controlled enemies, as well as other players, so you'll get a healthy mix of PvE and PvP action.

The Division: Heartland will be free to play on PC and consoles, while The Division: Resurgence will be available on mobile devices.

As of the 14th of November, The Division: Heartland has been rated by the Taiwan ratings board. Typically, we see ratings listings like this within a few months of a planned launch so assuming there are no delays, this game should be arriving quite soon, likely in early 2024.

With Ubisoft Massive finally shipping its Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora in December, and Star Wars: Outlaws in 2024, the studio can turn its attention back to The Division series. Aside from these two spin-offs, developed by other studios within the Ubisoft family, Ubisoft Massive will soon begin work on The Division 3, the next major chapter in the series.

KitGuru Says: I really enjoyed The Division 1 but didn't like the second game quite as much. If these spin-offs can deliver a bit of a different flavour and flesh out this version of an post-apocalyptic America, then they should make established fans of the franchise happy.

The Division has been a rather successful franchise for Ubisoft, with the first game in the series amassing a great deal of attention due to its focus on then-next-gen technologies and presentations. It's been 4 and a half years since The Division 2 with no official word of a sequel – until now.

In a surprising move for the publisher, Ubisoft announced The Division 3 via a blog post discussing the return of Julian Gerighty to the brand, saying “Julian Gerighty is returning to the brand he helped usher into the world. Gerighty has been appointed Executive Producer for The Division Brand, and will make the move once Star Wars Outlaws – a game he is currently overseeing as Creative Director – has shipped.”

For context, Gerighty served as Associate Creative Director for The Division 1 and then went on to become the lead Creative Director for its sequel. Discussing his return to The Division brand, Ubisoft officially announced that The Division 3 is a real thing, saying:

“Now, he’s setting his sights on Tom Clancy’s The Division 3, as well as the plethora of other projects set in The Division universe, including the mobile game Tom Clancy’s The Division Resurgence, and the survival-action shooter Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland.”

Ubisoft continued, “A core focus of Gerighty’s is to build a team for Tom Clancy’s The Division 3, which will be led by Massive Entertainment, while making sure Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 remains well supported. Outside of that, his attention will be on a solidification of brand identity.”

Considering the fact that Gerighty is still currently working on Star Wars Outlaws, do not expect to hear any further details for The Division 3 any time soon.

While we know that Ubisoft has multiple games set in The Division universe in development, it has been a long time since we had any official news. That will change this week, with Ubisoft planning an event to showcase the “future of The Division franchise”.

On the 20th of April (tomorrow, at the time of publishing), Ubisoft will host a Division Day livestream, with plans to give us the latest updates on The Division 2's Year 5 roadmap and two previously announced Division spin-off games:

As we can see in the preview, we will be getting new looks at The Division Heartland and The Division Resurgence during this stream. Both games have previously been announced but target slightly different markets.

The Division Resurgence is a mobile game, aiming to bring as much of the full Division experience as possible to iOS and Android devices. Meanwhile, Heartland is a free-to-play game aimed at PC and console gamers, offering two streamlined modes, one for PvE battles and another for PvP.

The Division 1 & 2 didn't end up being the massive live-service success stories that Ubisoft was hoping for, but the franchise still has a good amount of fans and there are many that enjoyed both games. While there are Division spin-offs in the works at Ubisoft, the publisher apparently has no plans for a big sequel.

Speaking with Insider Gaming, sources claimed that Ubisoft currently has no plans for The Division 3 and a true sequel is not in development. While The Division 3 isn't on the table right now, Ubisoft is working on The Division Heartland, a free-to-play spin-off game that will introduce a new cast of characters, with a greater focus on survival elements.

The Division 2 is also due to get another content update sometime in the near future, although it was just recently delayed due to an issue with the team's build generation system. A bug introduced during recent development meant that Ubisoft Massive had to shift focus to rebuild this system and get it functioning again before it can finish up development on the new season.

A recent round of cancellations at Ubisoft may have also impacted another Division related project.

KitGuru Says: While I really enjoyed The Division 1, it felt like Ubisoft moved on far too quickly and ultimately, I think that hurt the game's reputation. The first game didn't deliver on its ‘live service' promises and I think that made it harder to recommend investing in The Division 2 at launch. Perhaps Ubisoft will find more success with its free-to-play spin-offs.

While Ubisoft is more than willing to kill off less-than-successful live service titles, the ones that do succeed tend to receive MANY years of updates. One such title is The Division 2. Released in 2019, the game is set to soon get its 11th season however due to a new massive bug this update has now been delayed indefinitely.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the Division 2 development team said “Dear Agents,

Last week, we shared news that the season would be delayed due to a localization issue. This past Saturday, in the process of creating the update which would resolve the issue, we encountered an error that brought down the build generation system for The Division 2. As a result, we cannot update the game until this system has been rebuilt.”

This isn’t the first time a season of The Division has been delayed, however it does seem to be the most serious so far, with the team explaining that “In the past, when a Season was delayed, we extended the previous Season's activities. Unfortunately, this is not possible in the current situation, as we are unable to make server or client side updates until the build generation system is restored.”

They concluded by claiming “We are working to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. We have made good progress over the last 96 hours and have been able to restore critical aspects of the system and will share the timeline for resolution when available. We deeply appreciate your understanding and patience and will share our in-game compensation plan details soon. Our next update will be provided tomorrow.”

It is interesting to see that in the process of trying to fix a bug, the team seemingly accidentally caused even greater damage. It is encouraging at least to see the team being open with fans. As they said, hopefully this is fixed soon.

Recently, Ubisoft revealed that it has cancelled a number of unannounced games internally and the publisher is bracing for difficult times amid slowing sales and a lacking release schedule. While Ubisoft's 2022 was largely empty, the publisher does still have around 11 projects planned to release in the next financial year.

As revealed by Insider Gaming, Ubisoft has 11 games planned to release between April 2023 and March 2024, although the list doesn't include very many surprises as most of these projects have already appeared in leaks. Over the next fiscal year, we can expect to see Ubisoft's big hitters, like Assassin's Creed Mirage and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. After its most recent delay, Skull & Bones also makes this list, but given that game's track record, it is difficult to trust any release window for it at this point.

Ubisoft also has a number of Free to Play games in the works, an area of the gaming market that Ubisoft has repeatedly struggled to break into. these games include The Division: Heartland, The Division: Resurgence, XDefiant, Rainbow Six Mobile and Assassin's Creed Jade, a mobile spin-off for the Assassin's Creed franchise.

Aside from all of that, Ubisoft is also working with Netflix on a smaller Assassin's Creed game, and the company is working with Oculus to produce an Assassin's Creed game for Virtual Reality headsets. Finally, Ubisoft is also seemingly working on a new ‘The Crew' title, which was named in the GeForce Now Database leak as Project Orlando.

There are a few big games missing from this list, including the Splinter Cell Remake, The Prince of Persia Remake and Ubisoft Massive's open-world Star Wars game. These are some of the most anticipated projects Ubisoft has announced, but all three seem to be far off from release.

Given the lack of hype around Skull & Bones and the spin-off nature of Ubisoft's other planned titles for this year, it seems like the publisher will be pinning a lot of its hopes on Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. If that game ends up sticking to the tired and overused Ubisoft open-world tropes we've grown accustomed to seeing, then Ubisoft might be in for another rough year.

With that said, Assassin's Creed Mirage could end up being a surprise hit, as the game is set to bring back the gameplay style of the older games, something that a lot of long-time fans are eager to get back to. Assuming there are no delays, we should get our hands on Mirage in the first half of the year.

KitGuru Says: Looking at this list, Avatar seems to be Ubisoft's saving grace this year and I'd be surprised if the publisher can afford to delay it again. With the way Ubisoft is heading at the moment, do you think the publisher will be able to stay independent? Or do you think Ubisoft will be next up on the acquisition list?

After years away from the platform, Ubisoft has finally returned to Steam. That being said, the publisher is choosing to bring its titles over one at a time. Following the addition of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Roller Champions (among others), the next two titles coming to Steam have been revealed.

Available to wishlist right now, both Scott Pilgrim vs. The World: The Game – Complete Edition as well as Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 are set to be dropping onto Steam in early 2023 with the former launching in two weeks on the 5th of January, and the latter arriving on the 12th.

It is currently unknown what the cost of each title will be, but as with many of Ubisoft’s recent additions to Steam, it is possible both titles will launch at a discounted cost – especially given just how often Ubisoft titles drop in price.

Ubisoft announcing its return to Steam was universally met with support, and while it was known that future titles will release across all platforms, it is good to see the publisher seemingly committed to bringing all of their titles released over the past many years to the Steam platform.

According to a new leak, Ubisoft is planning its own games showcase, and it could be one of the publisher's biggest in years. So far, there are 20 known projects in the works at Ubisoft, ranging from already announced titles like Avatar and Assassin's Creed Infinity, to unannounced games like The Crew 3 and a new Prince of Persia game.

As reported by Tom Henderson, a leaker with a good track record, Ubisoft was initially planning to hold this event before E3 in June, but it was delayed to the Summer. According to his sources, Ubisoft has 20 games it wants to showcase during the event, including updates on previously announced titles and some new reveals.

Starting with the games we already know, the event should include Skull and Bones, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, The Division Heartland, Splinter Cell Remake and Ghost Recon Frontline. Other games that will likely be shown include XDefiant, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, Roller Champions, and Beyond Good and Evil 2. We should also see more about Assassin's Creed VR, Splinter Cell VR, and Rocksmith+.

As far as unannounced titles go, it is currently expected that we'll see The Crew 3, a sequel to Immortals Fenyx Rising and a new Prince of Persia game. We should also see the reveal of Assassin's Creed Rift, which leaked earlier this year, as well as a teaser for Assassin's Creed Infinity, which should be coming in 2023.

In a surprise update released last night, Ubisoft announced that it is working on a new game in The Division franchise. We aren't getting The Division 3 yet, but Ubisoft is making a free to play spin-off title.

Known as ‘The Division Heartland', this is a new game set in The Division universe developed by Red Storm Studio. Heartland will be a standalone game, so prior knowledge of The Division 1 and 2 won't be required to jump in.

The Division Heartland will be making its way to PC and consoles in late 2021 or early 2022. In addition, Ubisoft Massive is working on new content for The Division 2, which will begin rolling out later this year. There is also a mobile version of The Division on the way.

Unfortunately, that's all the information we have for the time being, but we should hear more in the coming months. Ubisoft will be attending E3 in June, during which we'll see announcements for many upcoming projects.

The Division franchise has quickly become one of Ubisoft’s most recognisable properties ever since the launch of the first game in 2016. Since then, both games have received years of new content, with The Division 2 even seeing this content extended thanks to “fan support”. Despite only 2 games having been released so far, Ubisoft has now announced that the franchise has surpassed “40 million unique players.”

In a blogpost discussing the future of The Division 2, Ubisoft revealed that “We are thrilled to announce that The Division franchise has reached over 40 million unique players! We wanted to take a moment to thank you Agents for your continued support and passion for the games we create. The release of the Warlords of New York expansion in March 2020 also saw the highest monthly active users for The Division 2.”

Ubisoft rarely comments on the precise number of copies sold, instead opting to focus on the number of ‘players’. While seemingly similar, there is a slight distinction between the two terms. In order to play The Division, all players must create a Ubisoft account, This remains the case even if players are simply trying to access the many free trials which Ubisoft has hosted of the years for these games.

While it is possible that The Division franchise has sold over 40 million copies, it is more likely to be factoring in all of those players who participated during free trials. Similarly, the company recently reported that Rainbow Six: Siege had surpassed 70 million players. Regardless of how many copies have actually been sold, there is no denying that The Division franchise is a success, and will most likely lead to a 3rd entry in the series being developed.

Each month, Microsoft offers four free games to those who are subscribed to the console manufacturer’s Xbox Live Gold service. For the month of September, subscribers can get their hands on Tom Clancy’s The Division, The Book of Unwritten Tales 2, de Blob 2, and Armed and Dangerous. These games will begin to be offered from the 1st of September.

The headlining free game for the month is The Division. Released in 2016, The Division offered a hybrid RPG which featured customisation; an explorable open world; dynamic multiplayer; and “tactical action combat”. While many of its multiplayer components are likely to be lacking 4 years after release, the game still offers plenty to do solo.

The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 is a point-and-click adventure game, which “hilariously spoofs some of the most beloved and famous fantasy stories ever written”. With “over 20 hours of story, help the quirky cast of characters fulfill their destiny in the tricky world of Avantasia”. The game received favourable reviews upon its release in 2015.

De Blob 2 is an Xbox 360 game available through backwards compatibility, which offers “an action-packed colorful adventure,” where “the Inkies are back with a new plot to rid the world of color and it is up to Blob to stop them. Featuring a unique painting functionality as the main game mechanic,” de Blob 2 received generally favourable reviews.

The final game on offer is Armed and Dangerous. Also available via backwards compatibility, this classic Xbox title features “a witty story that parodies popular media” as you “meet the Lionhearts, a smack-talking band of rebels on an impossible mission to save the world – that is if they don’t burn it down first.”

The Division will be available from the 1st of September to the 30th. The Book of Unwritten Tales 2 meanwhile will be purchasable from the 16th of September to the 15th of October. De Blob 2 is available from the 1st of September to the 15th, and last but not least, Armed and Dangerous will be available to purchase for free from the 16th of September until the 30th.

Google Stadia hasn’t received the most warm response since its release back in November 2019. Despite this, Ubisoft is continuing to support the service, recently announcing that three more of the publisher’s titles would be coming to the service. The games in question are Tom Clancy’s The Division 2, The Crew 2, and Monopoly. These games join a number of other Ubisoft titles already available on Stadia such as Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Just Dance 2020.

Ubisoft have been a supporter of Stadia since its first announcement back at GDC 2019, where Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was used to showcase the claimed strengths of the streaming service. It is therefore not surprising to see the publisher continue to support Stadia, despite its current reputation. Furthermore, some of the games being added will take advantage of Stadia’s more ‘unique’ features.

Arriving on the 17th of March, The Division 2 will take advantage of a number of Stadia’s features. Launching with the recently released ‘Warlords of New York’ expansion, The Division 2 will be the first Stadia title to feature both cross-play and cross-progression. This will be done through Ubisoft’s Uplay service. Furthermore, the game will feature Stadia’s ‘Stream Connect’ function, which allows you to “stream your teammate’s viewpoints onto a single screen”. Stream Connect was announced as one of Stadia’s USPs, though the feature wasn’t available at launch, instead arriving a month later in December, with one of Ubisoft’s other titles – Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. Still, it’s nice to see one of Stadia’s more standout features being implemented into more titles.

The second game announced to be arriving soon is The Crew 2. Arriving on the 25th of March, this 2018 open-world racing title allows you to take control of multiple vehicle types, from cars to boats to even planes. Though not the newest nor the most highly regarded title, The Crew 2 serves as the only open-world racing game on the service, offering users who enjoy those experiences to now have them on Stadia if they so desired.

The final game announced to be joining the service is Monopoly. A game which needs little introduction, Monopoly appears to be a suitable fit for the service in its current state, as due to its style of gameplay, even the slowest of internet speeds should be able to handle this title. Monopoly will join Stadia on the 28th of April.

These are all the new games announced by Ubisoft to be joining the service in the near future, though we already know that some of the publisher’s future titles will arrive upon their release – such as Watch Dogs Legion. Though none of the three titles set to join the service can be described as ‘new’ it is promising none-the-less to see Stadia’s library being fleshed out more.

Over the years, many Ubisoft games have fallen into a specific formula, with Watch Dogs and Far Cry taking elements from earlier Assassin's Creed games and more recently, The Division 2 and Ghost Recon Breakpoint featuring similar mechanics to each other. As we look ahead towards what's next for Ubisoft, the publisher says it is making efforts to make its games more distinct.

As reported by VCG, Ubisoft is revamping its editorial team to “be more agile and better accompany development teams around the world”. Ubisoft's Chief Creative Officer, Serge Hascoet, will continue to lead the group but the group that reports to him will be expanded and given more freedom, with each taking charge of one of Ubisoft's main franchises.

The idea here is that by having seven Vice Presidents each taking charge of their own franchise, more independent decisions can be made and different games can start to go off in their own directions. Hascoet will then check in on games at key milestone periods.

One source explained the old system to VCG, saying: “In the previous system that editorial had, there were often the ideas of just one or two people getting put into every game.”

This change has been coming for a while now, with Ubisoft CEO, Yves Guillemot acknowledging in October that there needed to be more time between ‘live game' sequels and some games needed to introduce unique gameplay elements.

We may start to see all of this in action later this year, with the releases of Watch Dogs Legion, Gods & Monsters and the next Assassin's Creed.

KitGuru Says: Ubisoft appeared to be going in this direction back when Assassin's Creed Origins came out, but other franchises since then have started borrowing elements from the new and improved Assassin's Creed formula, thus starting the problem over again. Hopefully with this new approach, Ubisoft's various franchises will start to truly stand out on their own.

Anthem may not have launched to positive reception but it still went on to be BioWare's biggest game launch ever. Since then though, the game has been slipping in the charts. Beyond that, the latest stats for March video game sales show Ubisoft's The Division 2 earning the top spot, with Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice coming in at number two.

The NPD group has finished tracking hardware and software sales for the games industry throughout March 2019. Overall, hardware sales did decline, although the Nintendo Switch managed to be the most resilient, beating out the PS4 and Xbox One last month. Year-on-year, console sales are down 15% compared to March 2018. Software sales saw a similar year-on-year dip, dropping by 11 percent.

Nintendo-Switch-Shot-02-e1484299745390.jpg

Here is the full top 20 selling games for March 2019:

  1. The Division 2.
  2. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
  3. MLB 19: The Show.
  4. Devil May Cry 5.
  5. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
  6. Red Dead Redemption 2.
  7. NBA 2K19.
  8. Grand Theft Auto V.
  9. Yoshi's Crafted World.
  10. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4.
  11. Anthem.
  12. Mario Kart 8.
  13. Jump Force.
  14. New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe.
  15. Far Cry New Dawn.
  16. Minecraft.
  17. Battlefield V.
  18. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
  19. Borderlands.
  20. Assassin's Creed Odyssey.

This list is pretty accurate, although it does have a couple of pitfalls worth keeping in mind. For Nintendo's games, digital sales aren't included in the counting process. Meanwhile, PC digital sales aren't counted for COD, Battlefield, Anthem, The Division 2 or Sekiro.

KitGuru Says: March was a solid month for game releases, with DMC 5, Sekiro and The Division 2 all going on to be successful. What's your favourite game of 2019 so far?

The Division was a huge game at launch, in fact at the time it was Ubisoft's fastest selling new IP in its history. While the game was a commercial success, over time that popularity waned as players became dissatisfied with various game updates. However, it looks like Ubisoft is hoping to bring players back for another round, as The Division 2 was announced today.

The Division was often pegged as a third-person variant of Destiny, which is true to some extent. It was a mission-based shooter with a focus on co-op, replay value and gearing up with better loot to take on harder challenges. However, unlike Destiny, Ubisoft made the bizarre decision to not expand on The Division's main story content, which in my opinion, was one of the game's strongest elements next to its world design. DLC drops came throughout the game's first year on the market and then in year two, The Division team dropped future DLC in favour of smaller, gameplay focussed patches.

Now, Ubisoft Massive is taking those lessons learned from the original game and channeling them into a sequel. The Division 2 will be using an updated version of the Snowdrop engine and production is currently in full swing, with Ubisoft's Annecy, Redstorm, Reflections, Shanghai and Bucharest studios helping to craft the game.

There is currently no release date for The Division 2, nor is there any information on setting, story or end-game content plans. All we really have currently is the promise of improvements over the original, and a logo. However, a community stream is set to take place soon, so perhaps the developers will share more details then.

Those who are still playing the original game on consoles can look forward to a major update though. Alongside the announcement of The Division 2, Ubisoft has announced that the original game will be getting enhanced for Xbox One X, which will enhance graphical fidelity and resolution. There is no word on a PS4 Pro equivalent update though.

KitGuru Says: I have my issues with how Ubisoft handled The Division, but it mainly comes from a place of love. The Division was my favourite and most played game for a good chunk of time, but as a PvE focussed player, Incursions were disappointing and additional story content was sorely lacking. With that said, I do hope that the sequel improves on these areas, if it does, I will probably jump back in. Did many of you play The Division when it came out? What would you like to see improved for the sequel?

Ubisoft has been very quiet when it comes to The Division over the last few months. The publisher decided to focus on regular free updates for Year Two, rather than making new expansion content. That may pay off soon though, as The Division is about to get its biggest update yet, expanding the in-game map and adding two new game modes.

The Division's 1.8 update titled ‘Resistance' expands the map to New York's west side pier, bringing in two new map zones to explore with a new social space. This part of the map will have some new PvE content to get through: “Defeated factions were last seen converging towards the sector and seem to have started working together for the first time. The Division must investigate the area to confirm that factions are indeed forging an alliance and determine the reason for their sudden interest in this location.”

Aside from the map expansion, there are two new game modes. The first is called ‘Resistance' and it is a PvE mode where four agents take on hordes of enemy factions. The goal is simply to survive for as long as you can. The second mode is called ‘Skirmish' and it is a PvP/Team Deathmatch style mode where two teams of four Division Agents battle it out to get the highest number of kills before the time expires.

Whether or not this will be enough to keep players returning to The Division remains to be seen. The game had a resurgence last year with the Survival expansion launch but since then things have dropped off once again. The Last Stand expansion was somewhat underwhelming and Year Two has been very quiet on the content up until now.

KitGuru Says: The Division was one of my most played games last year but unfortunately, the expansion content didn't do enough to hook me back in and now, Year Two has been very quiet. Have any of you played The Division at all this year? Do you think the game is still enjoyable, or is it time to let it die?

It seems the trend of CS:GO-style loot boxes continues, with The Division following in the footsteps of Rainbow Six: Siege and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds by including them in its 1.7 update that lands tomorrow. That’s not all, as returning players can expect to see new global evens and modifiers for the entire game.

This new information comes from information packed into the patch details, showing a listing of “Encrypted Caches.” These new Caches contain “exclusive emotes, outfits and skins,” which can be bought with “premium credits, or assembled from key fragments, which you can collect by completing commendations or killing named bosses.”

Commendations act like achievements or trophies, in which you will receive rewards for completing various objectives throughout the game. Don’t worry if you’ve done a lot in the game and are worried that you’ll miss out, as all commendation requirements that have already been met will be retroactively rewarded with premium currency.

Alongside the loot crates, the ability to customise your character’s appearance will be further enhanced along with some more powerful gear introduced into the game. Expect to see facemasks aplenty tomorrow.

KitGuru Says: Although this is another game that has taken the loot crate approach, we can rest easy knowing that it is just aesthetic items that won’t unbalance gameplay. Are you still playing The Division? Will you jump back in when 1.7 lands tomorrow?

With The Division's final ‘Year One' DLC now available to season pass owners, it is time for Ubisoft to start looking to the future. While many of us expected a ‘Year Two' content announcement for this game, it was also assumed that it would come in the form of a second season pass but it turns out that won't be the case. Instead, Ubisoft Massive will be releasing two free expansions to keep players coming back.

Ubisoft made this announcement in a stream last night, explaining that the first expansion will be available over the summer and will bring a new “event system that drives players to activities that feature modifiers and leaderboards”. Different events will have different modifiers, which will help make similar events feel a little different each time, these events will also reward players with unique vanity items and a place on the leaderboards.

This new content drop will also add in loadouts, allowing players to finally set up specific gear and weapon sets of their own for switching out on the fly without needing to go to each equipment slot individually.

The second expansion will be coming later in the year but will be “more content focussed”. Unfortunately, for those who were fans of The Division's story content, Ubisoft has no plans to expand on that for now: “we can't really deliver story missions that will fit into the RPG aspects of the game in a simple way, so we're not going to be doing the classic main mission type of thing”. However, new ‘narrative content' will happen at some point.

KitGuru Says: I think this goes to show that Ubisoft is worrying about The Division's player numbers. With that in mind, not splitting up the player base further with an additional season pass sounds like a good idea, I just hope that these free content drops are actually going to be enough to keep players interested. I must admit, the lack of new story content is already putting me off a little bit as I really enjoyed the initial campaign for the game.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Ubisoft's Massive Entertainment would start working on a new game based on the Avatar movie franchise. This was understandably alarming news for fans of The Division, as such a project could potentially impact support and future content. Fortunately, today Ubisoft clarified that this new project will not mean the end for The Division.

In a statement given to Eurogamer, an Ubisoft spokesperson explained that “Avatar is a new project with its own dedicated team”, The Division team will still exist but Massive Entertainment will be “recruiting top talent” to work on Avatar.

Here's the full statement: “Avatar is a new project with its own dedicated team and Massive is currently recruiting top talent to work on it. Avatar's development has no impact on the team working on The Division or on our plans to continually support and update the game and brand for the long term. We're proud of what the team has accomplished with The Division, thankful for our community's dedication, and looking forward to sharing more about what's coming next for the game very soon.”

With The Division's final DLC ‘The Last Stand' now out, we should hear more about the game's second year of content later on in the year, assuming it will follow a similar yearly content rollout to Rainbow Six: Siege.

KitGuru Says: I really enjoyed the 100 hours or so I played of The Division but I was disappointed in the final DLC, particularly since I never cared much for the game's PvP. Hopefully the game will continue to receive expansions with focus on additional story, rather than Incursions or The Dark Zone.

If you have been keeping up with The Division over the last few months, then you may have noticed that the game has gone through plenty of changes in an effort to get players back into the game. That objective has now been achieved, so today, Ubisoft turned its attention back to future content, giving us the first details on The Division's ‘Last Stand' expansion, which will be arriving soon.

Firstly, Last Stand will be the first DLC exempt from the Xbox One's timed exclusivity deal. Previously, Xbox owners got access to DLC a month ahead of everyone else, but that won't be the case this time. This DLC will focus on PvP but there will also be new PvE additions to the game.

For starters, there will be a new Dark Zone area coming to the game, which will cover zones 7, 8 and 9. The idea for this is to give players more freedom to explore the map, with greater access to the underground, roof tops and building interiors. These new zones apparently double the overall size of the Dark Zone. The player level cap will be staying the same though.

Last Stand is actually a new PvP mode, it's a structured 8v8 with matchmaking. For PvE players, a new incursion will be added to the game though Ubisoft didn't touch on that much.

We don't have a final release date for the Last Stand DLC just yet but it will be launching simultaneously across consoles and PC when it does arrive. Presumably we will get to see more of the new Dark Zone areas and Last Stand game mode too as we get closer to the release date.

KitGuru Says: I'm not much of a PvP player in The Division so I'm not sure how much of this expansion I'll really be diving in for. That said, a more structured PvP mode with matchmaking does sound like it could be fun and a nice change from the traditional Dark Zone chaos. Are any of you still playing The Division? Will you be returning for the Last Stand DLC?

Ubisoft is back on its feet with The Division following the hugely successful system overhauls that came with patch 1.4. Since then, players have been returning to the game but if you haven't given it a chance yet, then you will get the opportunity this weekend as the game will be free for everyone on PC to download and play for a few days. If you decide to buy the game, it will be on sale.

The free weekend kicks off tonight at 6PM here in the UK, this means if your internet is a little on the slow side, you will have this evening to get things going in time for Friday and Saturday. The free weekend will end at 9PM here in the UK on Sunday the 18th of December.

You will be able to play the base game and access the Dark Zone PvP area but you won't have access to some of the expansion content, which is a shame as the new Survival game mode is excellent. Still, there is a lot of content there in the base game to keep you going and it will be more than enough for you to make a purchase decision.

Finally, if you do decide to pick up the game, the gold edition (season pass included) will be selling for £32.50 while the base game on its own will be available for £14.99. Any progress you make during the free weekend will be carried over if you buy the game.

KitGuru Says: As someone who was a big fan of The Division at launch, I'm glad to see that Ubisoft has managed to revitalise the game. Hopefully this free weekend will help bring in some fresh players. Have any of you returned to The Division recently? Will you be taking part in the free weekend?

Last weekend, we got news that The Division's player count may finally be back to launch numbers, following Ubisoft's move to delay DLC to fix up all complaints with the game to bring players back in. Things weren't quite adding up according to Steam Chart numbers but given that a large portion of PC owners will have uPlay codes instead, this didn't really paint the full picture. Still, Ubisoft has now chosen to revise its statement a bit to better reflect the actual situation with the game.

No, The Division isn't back to its exact launch numbers as previously said. However, Ubisoft's Anne Blondel has since revised her statement: “what I meant to say is the numbers for The Division are trending back in a positive direction”, she explained to PCGamesN.

x3088054-gameplay_thedivisionunderground_endisny_gs-e1480167410845-jpg-pagespeed-ic-wcvy7fpkie

“Thanks to what we’ve seen with patch 1.4 and other updates the team has delivered. What I should have said is, we think it’s possible that The Division follows a similar pattern to Rainbow Six: Siege, which has seen increasing engagement to the point that DAU numbers have equalled those we saw during the launch period.”

So the initial statement was a tad misleading. However, it does look like things are looking positive for The Division following its recent patches. The new Survival DLC has also arrived, which will be bringing back in some players.

KitGuru Says: The Division does have more players than it did over the summer but things aren't quite back to launch numbers as previously believed. Perhaps we will see the game make a true resurgence similarly to Rainbow Six: Siege, which will be getting a ‘Year 2' season pass in 2017.

Update: Ubisoft has revised its original statement, claiming that the original wording was a ‘miscommunication'. An updated statement has since been issued, which now claims that The Division's player numbers are “trending in a positive direction”, rather than claiming launch numbers are back. Full story, HERE.

Original Story: While The Division started off as a fairly strong offering with a large community, the player count did start to drop dramatically after Ubisoft began prioritising future DLC updates over patches, bug fixes and addressing community concerns. However, since then Ubisoft has been working hard on turning things around and it appears to be working as apparently The Division's active player count returned to launch numbers after the Patch 1.4, which made sweeping changes to the game.

This is according to Ubisoft's VP of live operations, Anne Blondel, who explained to pcgamesn that when the player count began dropping, Ubisoft had to make a tough call: “Some players left the game earlier than what we thought, then we had to make that tough call – do we keep providing them with extra content or do we stop everything for a while, settle down, fix everything and then once the game is where it should be, then we start providing more content.”

Some players were apparently initially disappointed in future content being delayed. However, judging by the community reaction since, Ubisoft made the right call: “Since the release of patch 1.4, we went back to the daily active users we had at launch, because people were so impressed”. Unfortunately, verifying these numbers can be tricky as all physical copies of the game and most third-party sellers will be dealing in uPlay codes, and we can't see the sales figures or player counts for games on uPlay. We can see the Steam numbers through services like Steam Spy but due to the split base on PC, this does not give an accurate representation or paint the full picture.

Aside from the patch, Ubisoft has also implemented the public test realm in order to gauge community reaction from hardcore players and take feedback before pushing out future updates to everyone.  Now that the game seems to be back to where it should be, Ubisoft has got back on track with DLC, with the Survival DLC releasing this week. There will be another expansion titled ‘Last Stand' in 2017 too.

KitGuru Says: I was a big fan of The Division at launch but eventually ran out of patience when it came to endgame bugs. Fortunately, all of the changes seem to have cleaned things up quite a bit and I can finally enjoy the game again. Have any of you jumped back into The Division since the new changes were implemented? Do you think Ubisoft has done enough to win people back?

As much as I enjoyed The Division at launch, the game ran into a lot of issues when it came to end-game content. Unfortunately, instead of fixing the major issues, Ubisoft charged ahead with development for DLC instead. Eventually though, the player count started dropping and Ubisoft finally paid attention, delaying future DLC to actually fix the game. Over the last few months a major patch has been in the works and today, that patch is finally rolling out.

The developers have done a lot to ensure that this patch is a success. They even set up a Public Test Server a while back to give dedicated players a chance to test out the changes and give feedback so that things could be worked on prior to everyone getting access.

The Division Patch 1.4 comes between 4.5GB and 5.7GB in size depending on which platform you are playing on. This patch aims to add in a bunch of ‘quality of life' changes, while also improving the solo player experience. If you take a look at the lengthy patch notes, you will see that these new changes are extensive and touch just about every aspect of the game.

After this patch, players should be able to carry more ammo, kill NPCs faster and be rewarded with higher level gear. You will run into NPC bosses out in the open world, Incursions should offer a better overall experience and the Dark Zone should hopefully feel more rewarding. You can find the huge list of changes, HERE.

KitGuru Says: The patch notes are incredibly long, so it is clear that the team behind The Division have gone over almost every aspect of the game to address problems. Hopefully this patch will also clear up some of the progression halting bugs. Would any of you guys consider jumping back into The Division if this patch fixes the game up properly? I really enjoy the game myself so if the bugs are finally gone, maybe I'll jump back in regularly once again.

After months of struggling to properly combat bugs in The Division, Ubisoft is finally putting together a Public Test Server, which will allow players on the PC to test upcoming updates in order to ensure they are up to scratch before being pushed out to everyone.

Right now, the test server doesn't have a launch date but it is coming in “the near future”. This comes just after last week's news that Ubisoft would be delaying the next two DLCs for the game to actually go back and fix the game, which has had some recurring issues ever since launch.

PTS_Header_265980

The public test server came around after fans of the game put the idea out there. Then in a blog post, the PTS was officially announced: “As many pointed out after we announced Update 1.4, a great way to involve you would be to let you try the update before its release. Good news! We are thrilled to confirm that we will be opening a Public Test Server on PC for The Division in the near future.”

The public test server will be arriving before The Division's 1.4 patch, which is coming in October. This is the game's next big update and aims to address some balancing issues and other bugs. We are apparently set to get more information on this in the next few days.

KitGuru Says: A game like The Division really needs a dedicated team working on bug fixes, especially if you want to keep players coming back on a regular basis. I unfortunately had to give up on The Division after running into the same problems for weeks on end during the end-game content but it sounds like Ubisoft is finally getting things back on track. Hopefully in a few months, the game will be back to where it should be. Do any of you still play The Division? Would you return if the issues were fixed?

The Division has had its fair share of issues since launch, to the point where a lot of players just could not enjoy the end-game content. Rather than doubling down on the problems though, so far, Ubisoft has been prioritising DLC updates instead. However, that is changing now as Ubisoft has announced that it is delaying the next two expansions for the game in order to actually fix it.

This means there will be a gap in new content, instead update 1.4 will focus “entirely on bug fixing, game balancing and other improvements”. The Survival expansion will now come out late this year, while the Last Stand expansion will arrive in 2017.

“This new schedule will not only enable us to strengthen the core experience before adding new content, but also continuously improve it by allowing for more production time to ensure the quality of future updates as well. This ongoing effort will begin with Update 1.4 where we will address some of the most pressing issues, such as bugs, loot and time to kill and set the foundations for future improvements such as PvP and Dark Zone.”

This isn't the first time Ubisoft has been fairly slow to fix problems with one of its games, the publisher also only just recently began taking anti-cheat seriously with the PC version of Rainbow Six: Siege, which has been out since December of last year.

KitGuru Says: I had to give up on The Division a while back simply due to the constant bugs being present each week. They have taken their sweet time but it looks like some of those problems may finally get fixed now. Hopefully in the future Ubisoft won't just leave its players to deal with issues for months on end and then expect them to fork out for DLC. Are any of you guys still playing The Division? Have you been facing any consistent problems?

Although the movie adaptation of The Division might be one Ubisoft is keen on shopping around to studios, it's biding its time and taking things slowly. It wants to get all its ducks in a row before pitching it, so the fact that Interstellar and The Martian star Jessica Chastain, is said to be on board, is a good thing.

The Division is a property based on the 2016 Ubisoft game of the same title, where players investigate the aftermath of a small pox pandemic in New York city. The only other person attached to the project right now is Jake Gylenhaal, who is said to be producing as well as potentially starring in the eventual adaptation.

But now it seems they have Jessica Chastain too, though what role she would take is still up in the air.

This slow burn strategy of attracting some star power before pitching the film to established studios, is one Ubisoft previously employed with Assassin's Creed. As the Hollywood Reporter points out, before it went to Fox and Regency Enterprises, Ubisoft made sure Michael Fassbender was on board with the project. The same could be said for Tom Hardy and the in-development Splinter Cell movie too.

However film studios may well be cautious about another video game movie. Traditionally they have not performed well and though Warcraft recently made decent money in China, it did poorly everywhere else in the world, so there is no guarantee that a popular franchise will be able to draw in enough crowds to make up for a dull movie.

KitGuru Says: Would you go and watch a movie based on The Division? Perhaps more importantly, do stars like Jake Gylenhaal and Jessica Chastain change your thoughts about it?

If the issues with The Division haven't scared you off yet and you have been sticking it out to check out the paid DLCs, then you might want to log in to uPlay this week as the Underground expansion is now live. Underground is The Division's first paid DLC and has launched as part of patch 1.3.

Underground will take players into the underground tunnels of New York, while adding in randomly generated dungeons known as ‘Directives', which can be completed as part of a group for advanced loot. This is essentially another way for players to grind for better loot without taking on Incursions.

PatchNotes_Header_256864

There were some issues when the patch first went live with some players being unable to access the new content despite owning the season pass so keep that in mind. Aside from that, the servers are under heavy load today, so there are some connection errors and long wait times going around.

Aside from new ‘Directive' missions, the Underground expansion brings new weapons and gear, a new Dark Zone bracket and makes balance changes to existing weapons. You can read the patch notes, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Since The Division's launch, Ubisoft has been pretty slow when it comes to bug fixes so I've not logged into the game for a while. Hopefully this Underground expansion will be good enough to win back some of the lost players. Are any of you still playing The Division? Will you be giving the new DLC a shot?

The Division has been out for a little while now and at this point, veteran players are likely looking forward to the first of the paid DLCs that come with the game's season pass. Fortunately for them, it looks like the wait won't be too long as according to an Amazon listing, the Underground expansion is coming out later this month.

The Underground expansion was said to launch on the 28th of June (the date on the listing is now removed) but one thing to keep in mind is that Ubisoft has a timed Xbox exclusivity deal for the paid DLCs, so for PC and PS4 players, the wait will be a bit longer.

the-division-dlc

On the Xbox One, players will be able to pre-load the expansion from the 25th of June. Those on the PC and PlayStation 4 will likely be left waiting until the 28th of July to play through the new content.

The Division has three major expansions coming out in 2016, Underground, Survival and Last Stand. The first two come to Xbox 30 days ahead of time, while the final expansion should launch on all three platforms at once.
