Valve recently filed a trademark for a brand new video game – Neon Prime. Recent rumours have pointed to this being a Dota spin-off with a sci-fi theme.

When the trademark first came to light, a former Valve employee revealed that the company had been working on a ship-building game inspired by FTL. It was later claimed that the game would be a Dota spin-off with a sci-fi theme. Interestingly, a new Neon Prime Twitter account has now been discovered but is currently inactive, indicating that Valve is preparing for a reveal. It is worth noting though that this account could have been made after the trademark became public, which means it could be a fan-run account or someone squatting on a potential username Valve would want to use.

Today, Dota 2's massive tournament, The International, will come to an end with a new world champion to be crowned. The final match is currently ongoing. Previously, Valve announced its card game, Artifact, at The International to poor reception. That game was ultimately scrapped entirely after failing to garner a big enough player base.

Given how poorly things went for Artifact, we are unsure if Valve would announce another new, non-sequel game at The International. Still, it'll be interesting to see if Gabe Newell has anything to say to close out the event later today.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Do you think Neon Prime will be announced by Valve soon? Or do you think they'll sit on it for as long as possible and potentially shelve the game without ever officially announcing it?

We are less than two weeks away from the return of Dota 2's premier tournament, The International. Unfortunately, Valve's plans have hit a last minute roadblock, as a new surge of COVID-19 infections has forced the company to refund tickets.

Valve is pulling the plug on ticket sales for The International and is refunding everyone who already purchased tickets to attend the event. The International will still go ahead from the 12th to the 17th of October in Bucharest, but there will no longer be a live audience in attendance. As always though, the event will be livestreamed to the world through Steam, the Dota 2 client and other platforms like Twitch and YouTube.

“We wanted nothing more than to welcome fans live to the event, but we can no longer do so in a way that allows us to prioritise the health and well-being of both audience members and participants”, Valve said. “Those who purchased tickets will be issued a full refund automatically.”

Some Dota 2 teams have also been having their own complications due to COVID-19, with a handful of players getting infected in the weeks leading up to the tournament.

KitGuru Says: Holding massive live events still carries plenty of risk in 2021. Hopefully Valve has measures in place to ensure the teams still participating in the tournament remain safe and don't further spread the virus.

This year would have been Valve’s tenth annual The International tournament for Dota 2 but unfortunately, the COVID-19 situation has not subsided, meaning the summer tournament has now been put on hold and may not happen this year at all.

“After extensive consideration of the global health emergency stemming from COVID-19, we have made the difficult choice to delay The International”, the announcement post reads. “We have been exploring various date possibilities, but it is likely that the event will need to happen in 2021. Given the highly volatile landscape for local gathering restrictions, virus trajectory, and global travel policies, we don’t expect to have enough confidence to communicate firm dates in the near future.”

The International will return at some point though, and Valve is already working on restructuring the DPC season for Autumn/Fall. Valve is also working on the next Battle Pass for Dota 2, confirming that 25% of the money made will go directly into the prize pool for The International.

The Battle Pass will be released sooner, rather than being held back in order to launch closer to the event. However, it will arrive a few weeks later than it usually does. Hopefully in a couple of months time, Valve will have another status update on when the next tournament will take place.

KitGuru Says: I’m not much of a Dota 2 player myself, but I do enjoy following The International each year. Hopefully tournament can be rearranged soon enough so teams and organisations can prepare.

Razer has been a big supporter in the esports space for many years now, with roots going all the way back to 2005. At this point, Team Razer sponsors many top pro players, spread across 18 teams in 25 different countries. So far, 2019 is looking like a big showcase for Team Razer and its athletes, with a few major standouts.

EVO 2019 is coming up and Mousesports' Benjamin ‘Problem X' Simon is set to defend his championship title after winning the Street Fighter V tournament in 2018. EVO is always a huge stage for fighting game enthusiasts and for Street Fighter fans, it will be interesting to see if Mousesports' star player can go the distance twice in a row.

Team Razer will be represented at EVO 2019 again by Team EG's NyCVhrisG and HelloKittyRicki are also taking part in this year's Street Fighter V tournament, so we may well end up with a very interesting showdown as the tournament gets underway.

Dota 2 fans also have a big tournament to look forward to, as Valve's ‘The International' 2019 is coming up in August. The International tends to be one of the biggest esports tournaments each year and this year, Alliance will be a team to watch out for. The group rose to prominence back in 2013 and is now heading back to compete in the big leagues against the likes of Team EG and more.

KitGuru Says: I tend to tune in for the TI finals each year, so I am looking forward to seeing who makes it through this time around. EVO is also an interesting one to follow, although I'll likely be focusing on the Dragonball FighterZ tournament myself. Are many of you planning to watch one of these events?

Since launching in 2011, The International Dota 2 tournament has grown tremendously and is a core focus for Valve each year. The tournament has moved around a couple of times over the years, with the US, Canada and Germany all hosting the event. Next year, The International will be moving even further.

During the final day of this year's International, which took place in Vancouver, it was announced that the tournament will be hosted in Shanghai's Mercedez-Benz Arena next year. Shanghai's vice mayor, Weng Tiehui, posted a video announcing the move.

This will mark the first time that the tournament has been held outside of North America since 2012. The very first International took place in 2011 in Cologne, Germany, alongside Gamescom- Europe's largest gaming event.

Since then, The International has traditionally remained in Valve's hometown of Seattle, Washington. As GI.biz points out, this year's International moved to Vancouver while the usual Seattle venue underwent construction.

KitGuru Says: The International has moved around a few times over the years but China seems like the furthest move yet. Typically, Asia is a hotspot for esports, so this could end up being a solid move but it will also mean that some regular attendees may miss out next year.

Way back in late 2014, Valve began experimenting with game broadcasting, bringing the ability for Steam users to livestream their games to their friends. Last week, we noticed that bigger moves were being made, as Valve was gearing up to launch Steam.tv. Now, the site is officially live.

We don't have all of the details yet but the Steam.tv website is live and currently only broadcasts The International, Valve's $25 million Dota 2 tournament. Viewers can sign in with their Steam accounts to use the chat function.

This appears to be less of an official launch for Steam.tv and more of a public test run. So far, Valve hasn't said much about the site, or what it plans to do with it once The International is over. However, we should get more information soon now that the site is open to the public.

KitGuru Says: Steam.tv is very basic right now, with just the ability to sign in, chat and watch the official stream for The International. Hopefully we'll see the site expand in the future but so far, Valve is saying very little about it.

It’s safe to say that there’s a lot at stake during Dota 2’s biggest tournament, as The International pits teams against one another for parts of a $15 million prize pool. Unfortunately, Thunder Predator no longer has a shot at the winnings after one of its players was caught cheating in the qualifiers through the use of macros, resulting in a swift disqualification by Valve.

Macros are more common now than ever, enabling users to sequence a set of commands to the press of just one or two buttons, therefore streamlining the amount of effort it takes to execute a task. This can be used professionally while editing a photo, for example, or it can be used to give players an unfair advantage in-game.

In Dota 2, there are many heroes that require a lot of micromanagement where macros would come in useful, but few more so than Meepo – a Genomancer with the ability to create copies of himself that are each individually controlled. As Motherboard reports, Meepo was the choice of Thunder Predator player Atún in their third game against SG e-Sports.

Viewers of the match took to Reddit to complain about Atún’s unnatural ability to control the character in the heat of battle with unrivalled precision. For context, Meepo’s Poof ability allows the player to teleport one Meepo to another, often requiring a lot of back and forth depending on where the clones are scattered throughout the map.

Image: Atún from Liquipedia

Upon further investigation of Atún’s moves, the combat log used to record all inputs into Dota 2 showed that all of Meepo’s clones teleported at the exact same time, with the commands given at just a fraction of the time it would normally take to execute the move. This is impossible without the use of a hardware or software-based macro in place, to which the team has admitted.

“The player of our squadron ‘Atún’ has a Razer Synapse mouse, which, like any professional player, has put its own manual configuration to be able to have a better use of Hardware in benefit of its efficient performance in each of the games played with this hero (Meepo),” reads the translated Thunder Predator statement. Despite the concession, the team still asserts that it did nothing wrong as “no type of hack has been used.”

Razer Synapse is a software that allows for the customisation of macros on Razer mice, among other tweaks and adjustments from DPI to the lighting of RGB-enabled devices. This constitutes as a software-based macro. It will, however, likely be stored in the on-board memory of the mouse depending on the model, meaning it could similarly be seen as hardware-based.

Unfortunately, like most tournaments, macros are considered an illegal move in the competitive world. Qualifier organiser FACEIT could have stated this in a clearer manner, however its banning policy does outline that “all 3rd party software that is not allowed by the game publisher and that can give an unfair advantage to a player or team go under the cheating category.” Unfortunately for Thunder Predator, this has meant the team has been disqualified.

Interestingly, the South American team “denounces” the accusation despite outright admitting its wrongdoing, “affirming that at no time did our player ‘Atún’ use any type of hack or particular program that facilitated his game mode before the match, yesterday, with the SG team.”

KitGuru Says: I wonder what Thunder Predator thinks Razer Synapse is, if it doesn’t consider it a program that facilitates an unfair advantage. Despite joining the team just two months ago, Atún in particular has been playing tournaments since 2015, making it an even sillier thing to be disqualified on.

Valve’s biggest tournament of the year, ‘The International’ kicks off today and if you were wondering who Valve tapped for the event’s hardware, then look no further as ASUS will be supplying both the monitors and the systems for players at the event this year.

Our reviews have shown that Asus knows how to make an excellent gaming monitor and the ROG Swift line took that to the next level, nabbing 40 percent of the gaming monitor market in 2015. This year, players in the tournament will be gaming on the ROG Swift PG248Q, the recently announced 24-inch/1080p gaming monitor, which runs at a massive 180Hz refresh rate.

intro-hero

In terms of systems, Valve and Asus have teamed up to offer players the ROG Strix GL702 gaming laptop, which features Nvidia’s GTX 970M graphics chip, making it capable enough to power Dota 2 at a high frame rate for this tournament.

The International is Valve’s own Dota 2 tournament, which takes place in Seattle each year. The event kicks off today and will feature 16 teams facing off until the 13th of August, when the final two will go head to head for the $8.8 million prize.

With the DotA 2 International competition kicking off at the end of June, that means it's time to generate some prize money. In what has become a tradition, Valve plans to build that with gamer dollars, by offering them prizes, upgrades and unlocks for DotA 2 through the sale of its Compendium, delivered this year as part of the Battle Pass.

To try and tempt you into helping beat last year's monumental total, Valve has added even more to it this year. Buyers will automatically received several “Immortal Treatures,” as well as seasonal terrain packages, an evolving courier, with weather effects, music packs, a new HUD, loading screens, an announcer pack and more.

All of that can be had by anyone buying up the Battle Pass for $10 (£7), but it's in levelling it up and completing quests that the more exciting rewards lie. Quests can be completed by winning games of DotA in certain ways, with unique rewards at the end of each quest chain, including Battle Points for levelling up your pass, and a style upgrade.

battlepass

Do not expect this total to stay this low for long

You can even top up your potential winnings by wagering tokens on your games. You can tip your teammates or opponents too, if you feel they deserve some added recognition.

There are a number of other ways to earn more, unlock more and upgrade more with this year's Battle Pass: from competing in the Battle Cup, to guessing what the final total for this year's prize pool will be. Chances are it's going to beat last year's and if it does, Valve will reward everyone with even more in-game goodies.

If you don't fancy playing or taking part in the community event to level up though, you can always just buy your way through them. $2.50 gets you five levels. It might not be as much fun, but if you don't have the time or inclination then perhaps it's an option you might use.

Of course Battle Pass sales contribute just 25 per cent of their purchase price to the DotA 2 prize pool, so if Valve does pull in close to $20 million, it will be happy sitting atop a pile of $40 million £27.5 million) of its own pocket money; even if it has had to produce a lot of content to make the Compendium and Pass worth buying.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: I like how Valve involves the community in generating funds for the players, as that makes a much more sustainable environment. I'm not so much a fan of the way it gamifies spending money though.

The time has come, as Valve's annual Dota 2 championship tournament, ‘The International' is set to kick off at 6PM today here in the UK. There are 16 professional teams all geared up and ready to go for a chance to make it to the finals, which take place on Saturday. As the event has finally kicked off, we also know what the final prize pool is.

Sales of ‘The Compendium' have really helped out this year as The International's prize pool has managed to break over the $18 million barrier. As a result, the earlier prize pool breakdown that we posted is now out of date. The first place team is set to receive $6,481,986 in total. You can see the full breakdown below but it looks like every team is getting a bit of extra cash for competing:

The International

This year's Dota 2 tournament has way more money poured in to it compared to previous years. Back in 2011, the prize pool broke the $1 million mark for the first time. 2014's tournament managed to raise over $10 million and this year things have managed to skyrocket even further.

The games kick off tonight so if you're a fan of Dota 2, or want to see what all of the fuss is about, then you will be able to watch the streams in the Dota 2 client, from the Dota 2 website and as always, Twitch.

Valve's Dota 2 championship tournament, The International, is set to return soon and crowd funding for the prize pool is still under way, raising just over $17 million so far, which is bigger than all of the previous international tournaments combined. Now, Valve has also announced how the massive prize pool will be split for the top 16 teams in the tournament.

The compendium is still on sale so the prize pool still has time to grow, meaning this information is subject to change. However, for the time being, the 1st place team stands to take home at least $6,151,326, while 2nd place will receive $2,648,487 at the time of writing.

maxresdefault

Since the prize pool is so huge this year, every top six team will be getting at least $1 million. The team in 3rd place will get $2,050,442, fourth place will get $1,452,396, while fifth and sixth place teams will nab $1,110,656 each. That's it for the million dollar club.

The teams in 7th and 8th place will get $768,916 each, while 8th through to 12th place will all get $205,044 each. Finally, places 13 through to 16 will receive $51,261 each. As noted earlier, the compendium is still on sale, so these numbers will likely change a little bit but for now, it looks like the top 16 teams are all in for a pretty nice pay out.

The International group stage begins on the 27th of July and ends on the 30th. From then, the tournament itself will begin on the 3rd of August, running through until the 8th. All matches will be streamed on Twitch, YouTube along with the Dota 2 game client and website.

The prize pool for Valve's huge annual Dota 2 tournament, The International, has just hit its biggest milestone so far, with $15 million raised for the prize pool. This also means that all of Valve's crowd-funding stretch goals up to this point have been hit.

The prize pool is mostly raised from sales of the Compendium, which is a digital book that Valve brings out every year to help fund the tournament. This year's ‘The International' already had the largest prize pool so far in eSports history when it surpassed $11 million a few weeks back.

Dota-2-e1433517887551

Valve has invested some money in to the prize pool itself, putting $1.6 million in to the pot and leaving the rest up to the community. Obviously due to the popularity of cosmetic items in Dota 2 on the Steam marketplace, Valve has likely already made that money back.

The International has grown year after year and it only seems to be getting bigger. Even though people can watch from home, the live event at the Seattle Key Arena also consistently sells out so these tournaments definitely have a lot of money thrown in to them.

KitGuru Says: I followed The International tournament last year out of curiosity, clearly it is becoming a pretty big deal if this much money is being thrown at it. Are any of you guys planning on checking out the tournament when it starts?

The 2015 International Dota 2 tournament is set to kick off this summer and now it has the biggest prize pool yet, breaking more eSports records. This year, $11.4 million was raised for the tournament's prize pool, the largest ever for an eSports event.

The previous record was $10.9 million, which was also held by Valve's tournament, ‘The International'. This year, Valve contributed $1.6 million to the prize pool for the tournament, with the rest being made up from sales of Dota 2's The Compendium and certain marketplace skins.

Obviously the prize pool is a testament to how popular Dota 2 is, as Valve's Compendium digital books keep enjoying high sales each year, beefing up The International prize pool quite a bit.

This year's tournament will take place in Seattle once again, with the best Dota 2 professional teams flying in to compete. It all kicks off at the Key Arena on the third of August, running through until the eighth.

Update: Tickets for this year's Dota 2 tournament, ‘The International', went on sale yesterday with the event set to kick off in August. However, unless you were quick, your chance to go may have already come and gone as the initial batch of tickets sold out in just six minutes. The event is set to take place once again at the Seattle Key Arena, pitting 16 of the world's best Dota 2 teams against each other.

Original Story:
One of, if not the biggest eSports event of the year, Dota 2’s ‘The International’ is swiftly approaching and tickets go on sale today. The annual, Valve-backed event is now running in to its 5th year and will kick off in a few months’ time.

Last year’s tournament took place at Seattle’s Key Arena from the 18th of July until the 21st. The event costs $99 to attend but it does take place over the course of several days, pitting 16 of the best Dota 2 teams in the world against each other in a Championship showdown.

There will be two ticket waves, one at 1PM EDT and another at 1 AM EDT. Last year, the tickets sold out in less than an hour so those looking to attend will have to be quick. Tickets are limited to five per household, which is common for these sorts of events in order to combat scalpers.

Teams will receive their invitations shortly after the 1st of May. The event will once again take place at the Seattle Key Arena, although this time it will run from the 3rd of August until the 8th. The event will run over the course of six days, which is a little longer than last year.

Valve's fourth Dota 2 International tournament was a success it seems as viewer statistics have finally been released showing that more than 20 million people tuned in to watch the championships. The tournament's finale was shown on ESPN 2 as well as being shown on Twitch TV.

According to Valve, peak concurrent viewers reached “well over 2 million”, which is just over double last year's peak. This year Valve had multiple language streams, a newcomers stream and a DVR option for people to catch up on missed matches.

Dota-2-Compendium-2014-600x286

This year's Dota 2 viewer numbers were impressive although they lagged a little behind the most recent League of Legends season finals. League of Legends managed to pull in 32 million viewers last year with a peak of 8.5 million concurrent viewers.

This year's Dota 2 International final match saw two Chinese teams, ViCi Gaming and NewBee, go head to head for a $5 million share of the total $10 million prize fund.

The International Dota 2 championship tournament is finally coming to an end. We've had two weeks of single matches, eliminations and the final bracket but it all comes down to this- the grand final will see NewBee, the comeback kids of the tournament,  face off against ViCi Gaming.

Newbee managed to fight its way back from a losing streak in single match play to winning straight sets without a loss. ViCi beat out the US team, Evil Geniuses, with a 2-1 set, earning the Chinese team a place in the finals. The final set will take place later on today (Monday).

The two teams will play a best of 5 set, the winning team will walk away with $5 million. The remaining $5 million left in the prize fund will be split amongst the other teams in the final bracket. If you haven't been following The International tournament but want to watch the final, Valve has set up a newbie stream, which will introduce newcomers to the game.

Alternatively, you can watch the main stream on Twitch or you can watch the stream directly in the Dota 2 client.

Valve's Dota 2 tournament dubbed as ‘The International', has just seen its prize pool shoot passed $10 million, which is all thanks to the sales of the Compendium. Now Dota 2 players have unlocked the Compendium's 22nd and possibly final milestone, a victory prediction taunt.

Valve began selling the Compendium back in May for $10, $2.50 of which would go in to the tournament's prize pool. The Compendium expanded the prize pool from $600,000 all the way up to $4 million in its first week on sale, since then players have managed to hit all of Valve's target milestone's for owners.

New goals were added once the Compendium passed the $6 million mark so if sales continue to increase then we might see even more perks added in for owners. The grand prize at last year's International championship tournament was $1.4 million but with the hugely expanded prize pool this year you can expect the winning team to receive a lot more.

Whether you're a DotA 2 fan, League of Legends fan, or just like a bit of eSports in general, there's no reason not to be excited this weekend, as the DotA 2 International 2013 championships kick off with a bang – and it's got the biggest eSports prize pool ever.

Thanks to a collaboration with the community, each purchase of the official International Compendium contributed $2.50 to the prize pool available to competing teams. This has led to some huge cash prizes for those that place in the top few in the world.

  • 1st place: $1,390,029

  • 3rd place: $278,006
  • 4th place: $194,604

  • 8th place: $41,701

Cider plus eSports? I'm in.

So the stakes are high people, which should mean for some great competition. But how do you get involved? Fortunately our pals at PCGamesN have given us all a good run down. Want to watch live? You can spectate from within the DotA 2 client itself, which will give you the best quality. If you don't have it installed or would rather go more traditional, Twitch TV is offering up a stream of the whole event. The quality there won't be quite as high, but you will get crowd reactions and colour commentary.

Then there's the option of watching with a bunch of other fans at your local pubstomp. The only one in the UK is at the Meltdown Esports Bar on Caledonian Road in London. And of course you need to be 18+ to attend.
