Obsidian Entertainment has made a name for itself by creating a whole host of engaging and deep RPGs – perhaps known most fondly for their work on the much-loved Fallout: New Vegas. In 2019, the studio released a spiritual-successor to New Vegas in the form of The Outer Worlds. Celebrating the game’s 4th anniversary, Obsidian revealed that the game has now sold over 5 million copies.

Taking to Twitter to make the announcement, the official ‘The Outer Worlds’ page released an in-universe-styled tongue-in-cheek statement saying:

“The Board is excited to announce we have employed 5 Million spacers in the Halcyon Colony! We've sent you a mock apple and Spectrum Vodka to celebrate this achievement and our 4th anniversary! Do not fret; we've covered the cost of this celebration gift with your paycheck.”

While perhaps not quite as revered as Fallout: New Vegas, The Outer Worlds offered a fun space-faring RPG which scratched that Bethesda-style itch. Back in 2021, the game was confirmed to be getting a sequel, and with the title having now sold over 5 million copies, it is safe to assume that The Outer Worlds 2 will be even bigger and better than its predecessor.

It’ll be interesting to see how the game compares to Bethesda Game Studios’ recently-released Starfield – especially with both of them being space-focused sci-fi RPGs. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long to hear more about the sequel.

Each month, those who are subscribed to the Humble Choice service are privy to a number of games – letting you obtain a handful of titles for a relatively low price. Following a leak earlier this week, humble have now officially announced this month’s Choice line-up – including heavy-hitters such as Yakuza 4, TemTem, The Outer Worlds and more.

Available right now, July’s Humble Choice offerings include 8 games in total, averaging just over £1 per title (based on Humble Choice’s £8.99 monthly price), with the line-up being as follows:

  • The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition
  • TemTem
  • Yakuza 4 Remastered
  • Roadwarden
  • Kraken Academy
  • Merchant of the Skies
  • Ozymandias
  • Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate

One of the headlining titles is The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition: The most complete and up-to-date version of Obsidian Entertainment’s space RPG, featuring all of its post-launch DLC and graphical enhancements.

TemTem meanwhile is a “massively multiplayer creature-collection adventure” in which you can “catch every Temtem, battle other tamers, customize your house, join a friend's adventure or explore the dynamic online world” – in essence it is a Pokemon-like title with MMO elements. The game left Early Access last September, with Temtem continuing to receive a consistent string of updates.

Ever since the game left Early Access, TemTem has remained relatively pricey, with the title currently seeing its biggest discount on Steam (33% off). Still, even with this discount, being able to get the game and 7 other titles for a 3rd of the Steam price of TemTem alone is a massive saving. If you have been interested in any of these games, the Humble Choice line-up for July is certainly worth considering.

Each month, those who are subscribed to the Humble Choice service are privy to a number of games – letting you obtain a handful of titles for a relatively low price. Ahead of the official announcement, July’s Humble Choice line-up has been partially leaked, revealing a rather exciting month.

Notable leaker Billbil-kun has garnered a reputation for leaking many game line-ups across a whole suite of services from PlayStation Plus to Humble Choice and more. According to the insider, 2 of the 8 games set to be included with July’s Humble Choice line-up are:

  • The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition
  • Temtem

The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition is the most complete and up-to-date version of Obsidian Entertainment’s space RPG, featuring all of its post-launch DLC and graphical enhancements.

Temtem is a “massively multiplayer creature-collection adventure” in which you can “catch every Temtem, battle other tamers, customize your house, join a friend's adventure or explore the dynamic online world” – in essence it is a Pokemon-like title with MMO elements. The game left Early Access last September, with Temtem continuing to receive a consistent string of updates.

While these two titles are likely to be the headliners for July, it still represents the start of a strong month for Humble Choice – especially for the subscription’s cost of just £8.99 a month. It will be interesting to see what the rest of the line-up looks like.

Back in late 2022, we began seeing leaks for The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition, a new version of the game with visual upgrades for new-gen consoles and PC. It has been months since then and the leaks had all but been forgotten. That changes today, with Obsidian officially announcing the new version of the game and detailing its enhancements.

The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition includes the base game and both DLCs. You can expect improved graphics, including better particle effects and volumetric lighting. PS5 players will also benefit from adaptive trigger support and enhanced haptic feedback – presumably, these features will also be present if you use a DualSense controller with the PC version of the game.

This new version of The Outer Worlds will also run at 4K/60FPS on Xbox Series X and PS5. The Xbox Series S version will likely also target 60 frames per second, but at a lower target resolution.

The downside here is that this is not a free upgrade. If you already own The Outer Worlds on PC, Xbox or PlayStation, as well as the DLCs, then you can upgrade to the Spacer's Choice Edition for £5. Typically, paid upgrades like this have not been well received and it doesn't sound like the visual upgrade will bring that much to the table.

The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition will be available starting on the 7th of March.

A couple of weeks ago, The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition was revealed by ratings boards, showing that the new version of the game would release for Xbox Series X/S and PS5 consoles, as well as PC. Now, the box art for all three new versions of the game has also leaked (via Reddit):

With this version of the game only heading to modern platforms, it is possible that Obsidian has snuck in a few additional graphical improvements. The company has not yet announced the dedicated ‘next gen' version of the game for Sony and Microsoft's latest consoles. However, the original version is playable on both systems via backwards compatibility with Xbox One and PS4.

In Xbox's case, the need for a true ‘next gen' upgrade was lessened thanks to FPS Boost, a feature that allows certain backwards compatible titles to run at twice the original frame rate on Xbox Series X. This paved the way for 60FPS gameplay on console already. Unfortunately, the PS5 does not have an equivalent feature, so even on PS5, The Outer Worlds currently runs at 30FPS.

This new edition of the game will likely also give you the base game and two story DLCs all in one package. Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

While The Outer Worlds does have a 60FPS mode on Xbox Series X via Microsoft's own FPS Boost feature, Obsidian never released a dedicated ‘next-gen' version of the game for Xbox Series X/S and PS5. That is finally changing, as a new PS5 and Xbox version of the game has now been rated.

As reported by VGC, the Taiwanese Ratings Board recently listed (and then removed) a new version of the game known as ‘The Outer Worlds: Spacer's Choice Edition'. In the platforms section shows this new version heading to current-gen consoles and PC.

Presumably, this new edition of the game will back together the base game and its two DLCs, which offer players two new quest lines to explore. The new version may also have multiple visual modes, allowing users to choose between lower resolution and higher frame rate, or a higher resolution and 30FPS gameplay.

Obsidian has not yet announced this new re-release for The Outer Worlds, but given the ratings board listing, we'd expect some official news very soon.

Obsidian Entertainment is no stranger to short development times. The studio managed to create Fallout: New Vegas in just 18 months. Now, under Microsoft, the studio is reportedly planning on releasing a brand new game every year for the next 7 years – an impressive feat considering the studio’s size.

This report comes from Windows Central’s Jez Corden, who, when discussing the future of Xbox Games Studios revealed that Obsidian Entertainment – the studio behind games such as Fallout: New Vegas; South Park: The Stick of Truth; Pillars of Eternity; The Outer Worlds and more – is planning to release a new game every single year for the next 7 years starting with 2022.

2022’s release will reportedly be the final 1.0 version of the co-op survival game Grounded, with 2023 seeing the release of the team's next major RPG: Avowed. Beyond this however is unknown, though it is safe to assume that The Outer Worlds 2 – which was previously announced – will release sometime after that.

The final piece of information pertained to Josh Sawyer, the director for some of the studio’s best games including Pillar of Eternity 1 and 2, and Fallout: New Vegas. According to Corden, Sawyer is currently developing a secret game – one that will be handled by a relatively small team.

Obsidian Entertainment has always had a surprisingly quick turnaround for video games, with the most recent E3 being host to 3 game announcements and updates from the studio. While this purported release schedule is certainly impressive, hopefully the studio maintains a healthy environment free of crunch and toxicity.

The Outer Worlds represented Obsidian Entertainment’s foray back into the Fallout-esque style of RPG following the studio’s much-loved Fallout: New Vegas title back in 2010. While they no longer had access to the IP, Obsidian chose to create their own world, which seems to have paid off as The Outer Worlds has sold over 4 million copies.

As part of Take-Two Interactive's FY2022 Q1 results, the holding company revealed that Obsidian Entertainment’s The Outer Worlds has sold over 4 million copies. This is already impressive in its own right, but is doubly so when considering the fact that the game was made available day-one on Xbox Game Pass, meaning that the total number of players is likely to be much higher.

While commendable, the game still has a long way to go in order to match the sales figures of Fallout: New Vegas. Official figures put the game’s sales at 5 million copies in just a few weeks after its launch back in 2010, with total sales estimated to have landed at 12 million copies.

Of course, The Outer Worlds is a brand new IP, whereas Fallout New Vegas was the latest in a line of award-winning games, and so comparing the two is somewhat fruitless. Still, with The Outer Worlds selling so well from its first entry, it will be interesting to see just how well the game’s previously-announced sequel performs – especially as it is exclusive to Xbox and Game Pass.

The Outer Worlds was an open world-RPG in the vein of Fallout, developed by Obsidian Entertainment – the studio behind Fallout New Vegas. Despite Both Bethesda and Obsidian falling under the Xbox umbrella now, The Outer Worlds proved to offer a unique world in its own right, with the team confirming that a sequel is on the way.

Announced as part of Xbox and Bethesda’s E3 showcase, The Outer Worlds 2 was showcased in a tongue-in-cheek manner, poking fun at cinematic trailers that show little more than game titles and some atmospheric shots.

That being said, such is the case with The Outer Worlds 2, which is clearly far from release. Though there was no release date in sight, it was confirmed that The Outer Worlds 2 would feature a “New solar system, new crew, same Outer Worlds. The Outer Worlds 2 is coming…and when that day is closer we will show you more.”

As with almost every announcement at the Xbox and Bethesda conference, The Outer Worlds 2 will be coming to Xbox Game Pass day-and-date. Unlike the first game, which came to both PS4 and Nintendo Switch, the game’s sequel will be exclusive to Xbox – more specifically the Series X|S.

While many fans had hoped that Xbox now owning both Bethesda and Obsidian meant that a sequel to Fallout New Vegas was in the cards, it seems clear that the team is fully invested in this new and original IP. Hopefully The Outer Worlds 2 is even better than the first game.

Take-Two caused some confusion in recent days, after executives spoke about The Outer Worlds during an earnings call, praising the game for surpassing three million sales and expressing excitement at being involved with the IP moving forward. This of course made it sound like Microsoft did not get the publishing rights for The Outer Worlds after acquiring Obsidian, forcing some clarification.

During Take-Two's latest earnings call, President, Karl Slatoff, was quoted as saying that “we will be participating” in the future of The Outer Worlds, indicating that Take-Two still has some ownership over the series, whether it be IP rights or publishing rights. The odd thing here is that Microsoft acquired Obsidian back in 2018 just ahead of The Outer Worlds' launch – a sale that should have included the rights to The Outer Worlds moving forward.

Private Division, the Take-Two subsidiary that published The Outer Worlds, clarified the situation in a statement sent to Gamasutra:

“Private Division is still supporting and marketing The Outer Worlds, including the upcoming release of Murder on Eridanos DLC on Nintendo Switch. Moving forward, Obsidian and Microsoft will be publishing future iterations in the franchise, and we're absolutely thrilled to see where they take it.”

That quote settles the mystery – Microsoft does indeed hold the rights for The Outer Worlds, so a sequel would not involve a cross-industry publishing deal.

KitGuru Says: Microsoft not holding rights to The Outer Worlds would have greatly diminished the chance of a sequel, so this clarification was certainly needed.

One of the benefits to owning a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X is that many older titles are being updated with improved framerates on these systems. Unlike the previous generation, most of these pseudo-remasters are being offered for free. Such is the case with The Outer Worlds, which is now playable at 60fps on PS5 and Series X.

Ahead of the game's next DLC drop, which arrives on the 17th of March, Obsidian Entertainment released Patch 1.7 for The Outer Worlds. A surprise addition as part of this patch was the fact that on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the game now runs at 60fps, instead of 30.

This makes The Outer Worlds the latest in a long list of games which have seen their frame rates doubled thanks to the power of the new consoles. Some of the other titles to have received such an update include God of War, Gears 5, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and many more.

Additionally, Xbox recently added a number of Bethesda games to its list of FPS Boosted titles, including Skyrim, Fallout 4, Fallout 76 and more. All of these updates are seemingly helping to justify the cost of getting a new console during its early life, when next-gen games are still relatively sparse in release.

Releasing this update for free is a consumer friendly move which hopefully more developers will follow in the near future.

A few weeks ago during a Take-Two earnings report, the publisher revealed that a new expansion for The Outer Worlds would be releasing in Q1 2021, titled ‘Murder on Eridanos'. Now, Obsidian itself is finally talking about the next step for The Outer Worlds, releasing a teaser trailer for the upcoming DLC.

In a tweet last night, Obsidian teased that “new job duties are almost ready” and shared a teaser for the DLC. Today, the studio released the full trailer, which you can see below:

Murder on Eridanos is the final planned DLC for The Outer Worlds and completes the game's Expansion Pass. As the name implies, we'll be heading to Eridanos, a gas planet in the Halcyon system controlled by the corporations.

Just like the first DLC, Peril on Gorgon, we can expect a several hour-long quest line, new gear and plenty of dialogue skill checks. Murder on Eridanos is releasing on the 17th of March.

KitGuru Says: Are any of you interested in returning to The Outer Worlds again for the next DLC?

Last year, Obsidian returned to The Outer Worlds with a new expansion ‘Peril on Gorgon'. The adventure isn't over yet though, as a second expansion is on the way and according to reports, it'll be releasing before the end of March.

The Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgon initially released on the 9th of September 2020. Since then, the developers have been working on a second expansion, which is now known as “Murder on Eridanos”.

The second expansion was revealed during Take-Two's quarterly earnings report (via Gamespot). Take-Two investors were also informed of a Q1 release window, which ends on the 31st of March.

We can already tell from the title that we'll be heading to Eridanos, one of the unused planets from the base game. Obsidian hasn't announced the expansion itself yet, but it sounds like we'll be getting official news on that very soon.

KitGuru Says: Did many of you enjoy The Outer Worlds at release? Are you planning on jumping back in once the second expansion comes out?

The Outer Worlds didn't get off to the best start on Nintendo Switch, with poor visuals and performance. Things are starting to turn around though, with an upcoming patch set to bring a number of improvements.

Announced via The Outer Worlds Twitter account, a new patch is coming to the Nintendo Switch version on the 21st of October and following that, the game will be going on sale on the 22nd of October too.

As you can see in the tweet above, there are some graphical improvements. Terrain and lighting in particular seem to be looking a bit better than the initial release.

We'll have to wait until next week to get a full idea of the visual improvement, but things seem promising based on these initial screenshots.

KitGuru Says: Did any of you pick up The Outer Worlds on Nintendo Switch earlier this year? Will you be revisiting it after this graphics-improving patch?

While The Outer Worlds found plenty of success on Xbox Game Pass for PC and also sold on the Epic Games Store, Steam-only PC gamers have been missing out on Obsidian's latest RPG since launch. That will change very soon, with The Outer Worlds heading to Steam later this month.

The Outer Worlds is launching on Steam on the 23rd of October, alongside the game's recently released story DLC, Peril on Gorgon.

The Outer Worlds was originally developed by Obsidian when it was still an independent studio and published by Private Division, a subsidiary publisher of Take-Two Interactive. Private Division made the decision to release The Outer Worlds as an Epic Games Store exclusive for its first year on PC, but that timed period is now coming to an end.

Of course, when Microsoft bought Obsidian Entertainment in late 2019, that gave some leverage to bring the game to Game Pass, giving players another option outside of EGS to play the game.

Work on The Outer Worlds isn't over yet though, so if you are coming in late, you still have new content to look forward to after the Steam launch. The first story DLC, Peril on Gorgon is already released but a second expansion is also in the works for 2021.

KitGuru Says: The Outer Worlds was one of my favourite games of last year. Have many of you been waiting for it to come to Steam before playing? Will you be picking it up when it arrives later this month?

We've been waiting quite some time for Obsidian's return to The Outer Worlds. The studio began exploring the idea of story DLC in late 2019, shortly after the base game's successful launch and now, we are just a few weeks away from the first expansion's release. If you want to see what Peril on Gorgon is all about ahead of time, then you're in luck, as Obsidian has released new footage.

Peril on Gorgon will see players travelling to the Gorgon asteroid to investigate the origins of Adrena-Time, one of the consumable drugs in the game that allows time to slow down during combat. It is a dangerous consumable though, as once the effect wears off, you are left with a -1 to all attributes. With that in mind, there appears to be some science shenanigans going on behind the scenes creating this drug.

In the video above, uploading by Obsidian Entertainment, we get just under 12 minutes of gameplay footage for this new story DLC. Carrie Patel, game director, voices over the footage, guiding us through one of the new missions found in Peril on Gorgon.

Peril on Gorgon is the first of two story expansions coming to The Outer Worlds. It releases on the 9th of September and will be followed up by a second expansion in the months to come.

KitGuru Says: I'm looking forward to returning to The Outer Worlds, although it has been a very long time since the initial release at this point. Will many of you be returning for the new content?

The Outer Worlds is returning this year, with Obsidian Entertainment releasing the first of two ‘substantial' story DLC packs. The first is called Peril on Gorgon and will see players travelling to an asteroid to investigate the origins of Adrena-Time, one of the consumable drugs in the game.

Adrena-Time is a Spacer's Choice product and in-game, it allows the player to increase their movement speed for 15 seconds and buff their melee attack. Once the effect wears off though, players get a -1 to all attributes and move 10% slower.

Gorgon is the asteroid where Adrena-Time is created. The DLC is going to add a ‘subtantial amount of content', as you would expect from a DLC priced at $15. According to Obsidian, it is a “noir-tinged” adventure and aside from new story quests, you will also be able to get new weapons, armour, perks and character flaws.

This is the first of two upcoming expansion packs, with the first releasing on the 9th of September. We don't yet know when the second expansion is coming out. Either way though, you can get both as part of a $25 expansion pass. Since The Outer Worlds is still published by Private Division, all of this additional content will be available across all platforms and won't be exclusive to Xbox and PC. Future Obsidian games like Grounded and Avowed, however, will be Xbox and PC only.

KitGuru Says: The Outer Worlds was one of my favourite games of 2019, so I'm looking forward to returning to it. Will many of you be jumping back in to check out the new story expansions?

All the way back in December 2019, Obsidian announced that it was planning and working on additional DLC for The Outer Worlds. It has taken quite some time to get to this point, but Obsidian appears to be ready to bring The Outer Worlds back into our lives.

The official Twitter account for The Outer Worlds and the official website for the game were both updated today:

A quick visit to the website gives a teaser for a ‘special message from Spacer's Choice', one of the big corporations in The Outer Worlds' universe. After skipping that, we get an advertisement for Adrena-Time, one of the consumable items in the game. The posters are slightly different each time too, so there may be more to this teaser than initially meets the eye.

So far, nothing official has been announced but the Xbox Games Showcase is coming up in just a couple of days time. Perhaps Obsidian will be bringing new content for The Outer Worlds in addition to another look at Grounded.

Last week, Virtuos spoke highly of its ability to get Xbox One and PS4 games working on the Nintendo Switch. We'll be getting a good look at exactly how much the team can squeeze out of Nintendo's home/handheld hybrid system later this week, as The Outer Worlds is coming to the system.

Virtuous is handling the Nintendo Switch port of Obsidian's 2019 RPG. The game is arriving on the 5th of June and we already have a rough idea of what to expect graphically, thanks to screenshots shared by Nintendo, which you can see below:

After some speculation, some details about what to expect from the Switch version have come to light. Once the 6GB day-one patch is installed, The Outer Worlds should ‘target' 1080p at 30fps while docked and 720p/30fps in handheld mode. The Switch version will also support gyro controls and additional aim assist to make shooting handle better.

Of course, the key word here is ‘target'. Many of the bigger games being ported to Switch run with a dynamic resolution, so don't go in expecting perfect graphics and performance. There are bound to be a good share of dips along the way and we'll likely find that the ‘average' resolution will be lower than native.

With all of that said, The Outer Worlds should still be great on the Switch. Obsidian recently said it is “very happy” with what the team at Virtuos has done and we'll all get to try it for ourselves on June 5th.

KitGuru Says: I tend to revisit all of the big games that get a Switch version, so I'll be sinking some personal time into this over the weekend. Are any of you planning on getting The Outer Worlds for the Nintendo Switch?

The Outer Worlds is going to be back in the news over the next couple of months, as the Nintendo Switch version nears release. The game will be heading to Nintendo's platform in June and now, we know how much storage space you will need to free up to play it.

The Outer Worlds comes to the Nintendo Switch on the 5th of June, hopefully just ahead of Obsidian's first DLC announcement. Those picking up the game digitally can expect a 9.8GB download, as per the Switch eShop listing.

Those buying the physical edition unfortunately won't escape the need to download files, as the game's day-one patch has to be installed, measuring in at 6GB.

The patch for the physical edition of the game provides additional textures, performance optimisations and fixes a number of known gameplay issues.

Obsidian put itself back in the spotlight last year with the successful release of The Outer Worlds. The game has been out on PC, Xbox One and PS4 for a while now but a Switch version is also on the way. It was originally slated to come out in March but since then, the game has been pushed back to June.

The Outer Worlds will release on the Nintendo Switch on June 5th, a couple of months after it was originally scheduled. Below, you can see some early screenshots of the game running on Switch hardware, as posted by Nintendo.

Virtuos Games is handling the creation of the Nintendo Switch version, with Private Division publishing once again. As we can see from the screenshots, the game will be running on low settings and at a rather low resolution, meaning you likely don’t want to play this on a big screen TV. On the smaller handheld Switch screen though, those imperfections won’t jump out as much.

The retail version of The Outer Worlds on Switch will ship with a cartridge but you will still need to download a 6GB day-one patch that provides additional textures, fixes some gameplay issues and adds extra performance optimisation.

KitGuru Says: I'll likely be revisiting this game when it comes to Switch, mostly out of curiosity. Hopefully that DLC that Obsidian is working on isn't too far behind either.

The PlayStation store is currently having a sale which sees some of the console’s premier titles being offered for much lower prices. Dubbed the ‘Essential Picks’ sale, titles such as The Outer Worlds, Days Gone, and A Plague Tale: Innocence –to name a few– are all heavily discounted allowing you to play more for less. Almost 150 titles are being offered, meaning there’ll be something for everybody.

One of the titles on sale is The Outer Worlds. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, who are known best perhaps for Fallout: New Vegas, this RPG serves as a spiritual successor. The Outer Worlds takes all of the mechanics of a Fallout game and refines it. The game was nominated for 4 awards at the 2019 Game Awards, including Best Narrative and Game of The Year. The Outer Worlds can currently be had for £24.99 (50% off).

Another of 2019’s biggest games on sale is Days Gone. Releasing earlier in the year, this open world action-adventure zombie-esque thriller served as one of PlayStation’s major first-party offerings. Though initial reviews were mixed the game’s developers, Sony Bend, have worked tirelessly over the year in order to improve the experience though bug fixes, tweaks and new additions meaning that now is the best time to jump in. Days Gone is currently available for £24.99 (54% off) though PS Plus members get an additional 10% off, reducing the price further to £19.49.

A Plague Tale: Innocence is another one of 2019’s heavy hitters currently on sale. Developed by Asobo Studio, who in the past has worked on a number of movie tie-in titles, A Plague Tale: Innocence is a big departure from their previous works – and is also their best. This stealth title has you “follow the grim tale of young Amicia and her little brother Hugo, in a heartrending journey through the darkest hours of history. Hunted by Inquisition soldiers and surrounded by unstoppable swarms of rats, Amicia and Hugo will come to know and trust each other”. A Plague Tale: Innocence is currently 64% off, allowing you to pick it up for only £15.99.

These are but 3 of almost 150 titles on sale. Some other notable games on sale include, Metro Exodus (£17.24 – 68% off), Detroit: Become Human (£9.99 – 71% off), Blood and Truth (£15.99 – 54% off), and Bloodborne: Game of the Year Edition (£10.49 – 65% off). The full list of titles on sale can be found HERE.

While Xbox Game Pass is a great deal for consumers, there are still questions around how subscription services impact new games. Publishers that have been through the process themselves aren't entirely certain themselves, including Take-Two, with its CEO not quite knowing what to make of The Outer Worlds' launch on Game Pass.

Take-Two held its third quarter earnings call this week, with one analyst asking CEO, Strauss Zelnick, whether The Outer Worlds launching on Game Pass for console and PC had “helped or hurt the franchise”. The quick answer is, Zelnick isn't quite sure yet, but of course he did have more to say than just that.

“It’s hard to say, I think what we’ve said all long is that generally speaking, we want to be where the consumer is. Generally speaking, we think subscription offerings to the extent they exist are probably better suited to catalogue, but we’re willing to take experimental chances when it makes sense for a particular title and when the deal underlying that option also makes sense for us.”

When it comes down to it, The Outer Worlds did still sell two million copies and the game is set to get another boost thanks to an upcoming release on Nintendo Switch. With all of that in mind, Take-Two admits that it is “still early days” for these new subscription platforms and even streaming technology, but the publisher aims to “be where the consumer is” and remain “open-minded” when it comes to new business models and platforms.

KitGuru Says: I would love to know how revenue splits work through Xbox Game Pass. There are definitely times where the deal seems too good to be true, which means someone is losing out somewhere. For now at least, Game Pass continues to be one of the best deals in gaming.

The Outer Worlds is the latest action RPG to be developed by Obsidian Entertainment. Known for having created Fallout: New Vegas, their latest release was seen as a welcome follow up to 2010’s Fallout entry. It would appear as though the game’s positive reception was reflected in its sales as Take Two, the parent company of the game’s publisher, have now announced that The Outer Worlds has shipped over 2 million copies.

The Outer Worlds released on the 25th of October 2019 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, meaning that the game managed this sales achievement in less than 4 months. This is even more impressive when taking into account the fact that The Outer Worlds released concurrently on Xbox Game Pass, where the majority of Xbox users are likely to have played the game.

Unfortunately, with good news comes the bad. Private Division, the game’s publisher, has announced that the Nintendo Switch port, which was set to release on the 6th of March, has now been pushed back. The reason for the delay is said to be due to the impact of the coronavirus on the team porting the title. The port currently doesn’t have a new release date, but Private Division promised to “share more regarding a new launch date shortly.

Though this news may be disappointing to some eager Switch owners, Private Division did give some good news regarding the Switch release. Previously, though The Outer Worlds was set to release both physically and digitally, the game’s physical release on Switch was not going to contain a cartridge. Instead, the box was simply set to come with a download code for the game. Private division have now confirmed that the physical Switch release will indeed be coming with a cartridge, making the delay a little bit easier for fans to swallow.

KitGuru says: What do you think of The Outer Worlds’ delay on Switch? Are you glad to see that the game is being given a cartridge release? Have you played the game already, or were you waiting for the Switch port? Let us know down below.

Obsidian put itself back in the spotlight last year with the successful release of The Outer Worlds. The game has been out on PC, Xbox One and PS4 for a while now but soon, the game will also be landing on the Nintendo Switch. The Switch version's release date was announced last week but we have yet to see what the game looks like running on the system. That changes today, as the first screenshots have been released.

Similarly to The Witcher 3, DOOM, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and a few other titles, The Outer Worlds is a game that pushes the Switch hardware to its limits. As a result, sacrifices have had to be made in terms of detail settings and resolution. Nintendo has posted three screenshots on its official website so far, giving us our first look at what to expect.

Virtuos Games is handling the creation of the Nintendo Switch version, with Private Division publishing once again. As we can see from the screenshots, the game will be running on low settings and at a rather low resolution, meaning you likely don't want to play this on a big screen TV. On the smaller handheld Switch screen though, those imperfections won't jump out as much.

Currently, The Outer Worlds is due to come to Switch on the 6th of March. Obsidian is also working on DLC for the game at the moment, which should release across all platforms this year.

KitGuru Says: The Outer Worlds was one of my favourite games of 2019, so I'm looking forward to checking it out on the Switch. As someone that primarily plays in handheld mode, visual sacrifices don't tend to bother me as much. Are any of you thinking about picking up The Outer Worlds on the Nintendo Switch?

Obsidian put itself back in the spotlight last year with the successful release of The Outer Worlds. The game has been out on PC, Xbox One and PS4 for a while now but soon, the game will also be landing on the Nintendo Switch.

Virtuos Games was the development partner helming the Nintendo Switch version of the game, which will also be published by Private Division. Unfortunately for physical game collectors, the game will not ship on a cartridge, meaning boxed copies will instead house a download code for the Nintendo eShop.

For those who haven't played The Outer Worlds, it takes a lot of inspiration from older BioWare and Bethesda RPGs, mixing a little bit of Fallout and Mass Effect flavour into a condensed form. It is not the longest RPG ever made, but you will get to explore different planets affected by ‘The Board', a group of corporation heads that control this segment of space and all the colonies living in it. Expect plenty of dialogue options, interesting companions and fun combat.

The Outer Worlds is coming to the Nintendo Switch on the 6th of March.

KitGuru Says: I've been itching to play The Outer Worlds again recently, so I might hold off and check out the new Switch version. Beyond that, Obsidian is also working on story DLC for the game, which we should hear more about very soon.

The Outer Worlds might not have won best RPG at The Game Awards last week, but it was still without a doubt one of the best games to land in 2019. There have been rumours that Obsidian is working on extra content for the game since launch and now, the studio has announced that story DLC is indeed on the way.

In a special thank you message to players on the Obsidian forums, the studio thanked fans for voting The Outer Worlds to be nominated at The Game Awards this year. The reception to the game has been “fantastic” but as the post says, “the journey isn't over yet”.

There aren't many details on The Outer World's first story DLC just yet but it will be coming out in 2020, so we can expect more details in the months to come. We know that The Outer Worlds team has remained active since the game came out in October, so hopefully this new content is already making good progress.

Obsidian has created some great RPGs over the years but they’ve not always launched without issues. Fortunately, patches have been swift for The Outer Worlds, with the latest update fixing a late game crashing bug, UI issues and a few other problems.

Patch 1.1.1.0 for The Outer Worlds began rolling out this week, fixing two standout bugs in particular thanks to “community requests”. With the latest update, players should no longer crash when reaching a critical story moment on Tartarus. There were a couple of work arounds for this bug already- I had to resort to one myself. Thankfully, those workarounds should no longer be necessary to continue progressing.

The second big fix regards the user interface. Players can now adjust the font size for subtitles, conversation text, terminals etc.

Obsidian has also made some changes to botched quests. Now, existing botched companion quests will have their status reset to active, allowing players to add those crew members to your party again and in-botch the quest. Obviously, this does not work if your companion has died. In addition to that, issues caused by having SAM and Nayoka in your party during the ‘Radio Free Monarch’ quest have been resolved.

Finally, there are some console-specific fixes too. Audio should no longer be muffled on PS4, foliage on Xbox One X should now look roughly as good as it does on PS4 and the ‘Its not the best choice’ achievement/trophy will now pop up correctly.

As for what’s next for The Outer Worlds, rumour has it that the development team is still active, so additional DLC content could be on the way.

KitGuru Says: The Outer Worlds ate up a lot of my gaming hours in October, I even popped back in after completing it to try the ‘evil’ playthrough. Have many of you played this yet? Have you ran into any issues in need of fixing?

Whenever a major company acquires a beloved independent studio, particularly now that we're in an age of publishers chasing the ‘live service' dream. In the case of Obsidian, which joined Microsoft's roster of Xbox Game Studios last year, much of the focus is on staying the same, with most improvements stemming from the fact that financial backing is no longer a concern. With that in mind, The Outer Worlds DLC is sounding quite likely and multiple new games are in the works right now.

During a press gathering at Obsidian's studio a few weeks ago, Eurogamer was able to get a lay of the land. Currently, Obsidian is operating with around 185 employees and while there are open job spots, studio head Feargus Urquhart explained that he that while franchises like Assassin's Creed are awesome, he doesn't think Obsidian needs to “compete with numbers” and doesn't want to grow into a massive 1000-person studio. This should be good news, as Obsidian has always done an excellent job with the resources available. The key difference now is that Obsidian doesn't need to worry about chasing publishers to fund a game, freeing up the studio to focus on the creative side, rather than business.

This will have a particularly positive impact on Urquhart: “Increasingly my job over the last five years has been business, more and more and more, but more of my job now gets to actually be working on games. I would love to be a game director again, I got to do that back on Fallout 2, I've done it intermittently for short periods of time here, and it would be cool to be a game director again.”

The Outer Worlds was published by Take-Two's smaller publishing label ‘Private Division'. Typically, if a publisher wasn't paying Obsidian for additional post-release content, there wouldn't be any, as the studio would need to move on to the next big project in order to stay afloat. However, under Microsoft, racing towards the next publisher deal is no longer an issue:

“In the Microsoft world, we get to run a studio based on what makes sense for the franchises and I'm not having to make these day-to-day decisions so much”, Urquhart said. “People are obviously loving Outer Worlds and we made it because we love it, so now we get to keep on doing things to help support it”.

A post-release plan has not been announced for The Outer Worlds officially but the development team is still active, and going by Urquhart's comments, DLC could very well be on the way.

Last night at XO19, Obsidian announced another brand new IP, which single-player RPG fans may find underwhelming. Ungrounded is a survival game with the key hook being that you are playing as cartoon humans shrunk down to the size of ants. A small team in a living-room sized office are currently working on that, while other teams at Obsidian tackle RPGs. Josh Sawyer, director on Pillars of Eternity, is still in his office working away, meanwhile Chris Parker, director of Alpha Protocol, is currently making a new game with another team at Obsidian.

That is all we have for now, although more tidbits can be found in Eurogamer's full feature. For now, the main takeaway in regards to Obsidian is that it is still a mid-size studio wearing multiple hats, so we can expect plenty of good things over the next few years.

KitGuru Says: Obsidian's first new game announcement under Microsoft being a cartoony survival game is a tad disappointing for RPG fans, even if the project started before the acquisition. Fortunately, there are other games in the works. I'm particularly intrigued by the idea of The Outer Worlds DLC and Chris Parker's new game. Hopefully it won't be long until we start hearing more on those projects.
