Prior to Destiny 2: The Witch Queen, various rumours pointed to a new poison/decay subclass being added to the game. That didn't end up happening this expansion, but it looks like Bungie has now confirmed it for Lightfall.

Bungie is currently preparing to reveal the next phase for Destiny 2. A livestream on the 23rd of August will see a new season launch, and Bungie will be unveiling Lightfall and a release date. One artist recently shared a finisher animation video that appears to reveal one upcoming feature for Destiny 2 – a new ‘green' coloured subclass.

As pointed out by Paul Tassi, the video shows a new subclass UI in the bottom corner of the screen with new icons. Each subclass in Destiny 2 has a colour attached to it. Solar is red/orange, Void is purple, Arc is a light blue and Stasis, the very first ‘Darkness' subclass in the game, is a darker blue. The icons shown in the video are green, lining up with previous rumours that Bungie is working on a Poison subclass. Presumably, this will be a new Darkness subclass and should debut with Lightfall, the next major Destiny expansion.

Unfortunately, that's all the information we have for now. Bungie will be making major announcements for Destiny in a livestream on the 23rd of August.

KitGuru Says: Interestingly, The Witch Queen did debut a new exotic SMG in the game, which has a poison/decay perk. That could end up becoming highly sought after if Bungie is planning on introducing this new subclass.

Destiny 2 is set to enter a new era later tonight with the launch of The Witch Queen expansion, but as with any major online game launch, there are going to be a lot of players trying to play on day-one. With that in mind, Bungie has already forewarned of difficulties logging in this evening.

At the time of writing, The Witch Queen is one hour away from launch, with servers opening up at 6PM GMT. So far, over a million players have pre-ordered The Witch Queen expansion, so expect some issues getting into the game this evening if you're trying to play as soon as the servers go live.

Destiny community manager, Dylan Gafner, explained this a bit further. While Bungie has stress tested the servers, a million players all potentially trying to log in at the same time is bound to cause some issues.

The Witch Queen is the next major expansion for Destiny 2 and acts as the second entry in a trilogy of expansions exploring the rise and fall of Savathûn and finally putting Guardians up against ‘The Darkness', an enemy that has been teased since the earliest days of Destiny.

KitGuru Says: Are any of you planning on hopping back into Destiny 2 this week for the new expansion launch?

Bungie has tried to reinvent the ‘Destiny' experience many times over the years to varying degrees of success. When Bungie first introduced the seasonal content model, it felt like things were heading in the right direction, but over time, we came to realise that those early seasons weren't building up to the big story moments many players were hoping for. That is all finally starting to change this year, with Season of the Lost and The Witch Queen expansion showing signs of living up to the ambitious promises Bungie sold us on all those years ago.

Last year, Bungie finally gave Destiny fans what we've all been waiting for – a roadmap of expansions that will cover one huge, connected story arc. From the beginning, Destiny has been a story about Light vs Dark, but exactly what that meant was never really explained. With the Beyond Light expansion, we finally started to learn more about this mysterious ‘darkness', guardians even gained the ability to harness its power in the form of a new subclass, separate from the void, solar and arc classes.

As we head towards the next expansion, Bungie is starting to piece together long-running mysteries dating back to the earliest days of Destiny and Destiny 2. Season of the Lost had arguably the biggest in-season story-moment to date, bringing us face to face with a true ‘big bad' – Savathûn, the queen of the Hive. As it turns out, Savathûn has been using one of our allies, Osiris, as a puppet and is using this as leverage to get us to help her. For now, we're tasked with playing along, in part thanks to some convincing from Mara Sov, another long-standing Destiny character.

Thanks to The Witch Queen expansion reveal, we already know where this is heading on the surface level. Savathûn is going to be freed, empower the hive and come after us. Not only will we have to deal with the Witch Queen herself, but we'll also encounter new hive enemies – ones that can wield the same light-based powers that we can, creating a war between guardians.

With such a promising start to Season of the Lost, and knowing the point we need to get to before The Witch Queen expansion launches in February, we can expect a lot of major story beats in the months to come. For the first time, it feels like a season is building up to something major and at the end of it, Destiny 2 is finally going to have its ‘Avengers' moment, where players come together to take down a Thanos-level threat and deal with the fallout afterwards. The effects of this upcoming battle will carry over into the next expansions, Lightfall and The Final Shape, concluding the story that Bungie set out to tell all the way back in 2014 with the initial release of Destiny.

If you've dropped Destiny in the past due to lack of story content, now is a great time to jump back in. Things have only just begun, and the basics of the story are easy to grasp without diving deep into lore.

Of course, story is just one part of the game, at its core, Destiny 2 needs to be fun and with this new season, Bungie has introduced some great new repeatable activities, while also making some changes to systems. To help returning players hit the ground running, I'll break down the core loop for Season of the Lost so you can hit the ground running and get straight to the good stuff.

After completing the introductory story mission for Season of the Lost, you're going to want to start diving into seasonal activities to gear up. For this, you'll want to be running the Astral Alignment activity, a match-made mission available through The Dreaming City. At the end of each run, you'll be rewarded with a chest containing loot from this season, you are also likely to obtain an umbral engram, which you can unlock at the HELM facility.

To level up your umbral engrams and unlock an additional chest at the end of the Astral Alignment, you're going to need some Paralax Trajectory – a confusing name for a very simple in-game currency. This currency is rewarded in larger quantities through the Crucible and Vanguard Strikes, so if you're into PvP, you'll want to run some games of Control or Deathmatch and if you'd rather stick to PvE, load up on bounties and complete the weekly challenges for strikes.

You can also obtain Paralax Trajectory by hunting down Ascendant Anchors, which are collectibles spread out over several maps. Load up on bounties, head out on patrols across different worlds and you are bound to come across them. There are also plenty of guides available to send you directly to the locations of Ascendant Anchors, but this method is tedious and in my opinion, not as fun as completing Vanguard and Crucible challenges.

Once you've gone through this loop a few times, you'll be geared up enough to head to the Shattered Realm, a more challenging activity introduced this season. In this area, you'll be going around activating beacons and fending off waves of tough ‘Taken' enemies, culminating in a boss fight at the end.

Doing all of this will add progress to your seasonal challenges, with each completed challenge rewarding a good chunk of XP, as well as levelling up your Wayfinder Compass, the seasonal item introduced at the start of the new seasonal quest. Levelling up your Wayfinder Compass will grant bonuses for the rest of the season, such as reducing the cost of bounties. You will also obtain new weapon and armour mods to give your guardian incremental power boosts and additional combat perks.

This may all sound like a lot, but these activities are so easy to jump in and out of. You aren't going to need to dedicate all your gaming hours to Destiny in order to keep up this season. I only played around five hours or so during the first week, jumping in for 30 minutes to an hour at a time completing quick runs of activities. With that time invested, I completed eight of the ten weekly challenges and found myself well on my way to power level 1300 with brand new gear, so if you're a casual player like me, you should get along just fine this season.

That's all there is to it for now, but we can expect more to be introduced over the course of the season to shake things up. As long as Bungie can keep this up, things are only going to get better from here.

Bungie is just hours away from its big Destiny 2 reveal event, during which we expect to see announcements for the next season, as well as the next major expansion, The Witch Queen. Unfortunately, the PlayStation Store has leaked some details early, including the release date for the new expansion.

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen will be releasing on PC and consoles on the 22nd of February 2022. Initially, the expansion was set to come out this year, but it was later pushed to ‘early 2022'.

According to the store listing, Bungie is touting The Witch Queen as “the definitive Destiny campaign”, with a huge focus on The Hive, a new main villain, Savathûn, and new gameplay additions, including a new weapon type, melee combos and more.

Bungie will be officially revealing The Witch Queen expansion details later today, at 5PM BST. The next Destiny 2 season, known as Season of the Lost, will also kick off.

KitGuru Says: Hopefully Bungie can still bring a couple of surprises to the table today, despite all the leaks. Are you planning to tune into Bungie's reveal stream later today?

While Destiny 2's next major expansion, The Witch Queen, won't be coming out until 2022, Bungie will be giving us a look at what to expect this year. Today, the studio confirmed that it will be hosting an event in August.

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen is set to be shown during a Destiny 2 Showcase on the 24th of August. The expansion was originally scheduled to launch this year, but it was pushed back to ‘early 2022'.

The Witch Queen is part two of a trilogy of expansions, which kicked off with Beyond Light and will end with Lightfall, which was initially announced to release in 2022, but due to The Witch Queen's delay, it is likely that Lightfall will slip into 2023.

Current rumours suggest that The Witch Queen expansion will introduce Chicago as a playable location on Earth. However, as new locations are introduced, other areas will be retired and placed in the Destiny 2 Vault as part of Bungie's efforts to keep the game from becoming too big.

While Bungie had initially planned to ship another Destiny 2 expansion later this year, the studio has since realised that it is going to need more development time. As a result, Destiny 2: The Witch Queen will now be coming in 2022 instead.

As part of this week's Destiny 2 blog update, Bungie touched on the subject of The Witch Queen expansion, saying that it is “unlike anything we've ever attempted before”, promising character arcs, a persistent and connected narrative and setting up a grand finale for the “Light and Darkness Saga”, which began with Destiny 1.

With so much story to pack into The Witch Queen expansion, the team wants to give itself “enough time to build out this journey in the right way”. With that in mind, Destiny 2: The Witch Queen will now be releasing in 2022 instead of late 2021.

Bungie announced a trio of expansions last year, starting with Beyond Light. The narrative will carry on in The Witch Queen, before wrapping up some of Destiny 2's biggest mysteries in Lightfall. With The Witch Queen now coming out in 2022, it is likely that the Lightfall expansion will also be pushed back by at least a year.

KitGuru Says: I'm really looking forward to these next two expansions for Destiny 2. From the sounds of it, Bungie will be delivering on some very old promises. Do many of you still play Destiny 2? Were you looking forward to the next expansion?

We all knew Bungie was going to be revealing this year's major expansion for Destiny 2 during a livestream today. However, the studio gave us much more than we bargained for, lining up the next three major expansions and some huge changes to Destiny to finally turn it into the singular, all-encompassing online game that it was originally pitched as all those years ago.

Destiny 2 director, Luke Smith, stated during the reveal that the team does “not want to start over from scratch and make a sequel”, instead, the next couple of years worth of Destiny 2 are now planned out with a story line that will carry through and build up to a big finale. That all starts with Destiny 2: Beyond Light, which releases this year on September 22nd.

Beyond Light will sent players off to Europa, a brand new destination in Destiny 2 where a dormant pyramid ship has activated. Europa is also the birthplace of the Exo race, so if you are into Destiny lore, this will be one of the most interesting expansions to date.

Beyond Light will see the introduction of Eramis, she is a new villain hoping to gain revenge on The Traveller. During the expansion, Guardians will also learn how to wield ‘the darkness' for the first time, starting off with a new power called ‘Stasis'.

This is all just the beginning though, now that Bungie has a long-term plan in place, we can expect the long-dormant Darkness to continue to reveal itself, leading to a multi-year, multi-expansion story. The next chapter will arrive in 2021, with Destiny 2: The Witch Queen. Then, in 2022, Destiny 2: Lightfall will release.

These new expansions will include new planets that have not appeared in Destiny 2 previously. Bungie is also planning on implementing the ‘Destiny Content Vault', where certain bits of content will cycle in and out of the game periodically. The downside to this is some missions won't be available for a while, but the upside is that Bungie will be bringing back older Destiny 1 content . With that in mind, expect to see the Vault of Glass raid return, in addition to some fan-favourite strikes and other missions.

The first example of Destiny 1 content returning will come with the Beyond Light expansion, as the Cosmodrome will be explorable on Earth once again.

Big features are being worked on, like transmogrification, a long requested feature so players can keep their characters looking the way they want without sacrificing gear power. Inter-generation cross-play is coming to the console versions of the game, so PS4 players can play with PS5 players, Xbox One with Xbox Series X etc. Eventually, full cross-play may be possible, but not for the time being.

Destiny 2 will also get a free upgrade for those upgrading from PS4 to PS5 or Xbox One to Xbox Series X. Meaning all previously purchased content moves to the new console with you, as well as your characters and progress. The game will also be updated to 4K and 60 frames per second on the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

There will be plenty more for Bungie to share in the future but for now, that's most of the information we have. Tonight, Destiny 2 kicks off the Season of Arrival, so more in-game teasers and content will be coming over the next few months as we build up to Beyond Light's launch.

KitGuru Says: For a 30-minute stream, Bungie really threw a lot of information out, to the point where it was almost difficult to keep up. However, there is no denying that the triple-expansion reveal was hype worthy. What did you all think of today's big reveal? What are your thoughts on the new changes coming to Destiny 2 over the next couple of years?
