Many of us had assumed that CD Projekt Red would move away from Geralt being the lead character with its new trilogy. However, the game director on The Witcher 4 has now teased Geralt's return.

In an interview with Italian site Lega Nerd (via insider-gaming), Witcher game director, Sebastian Kalemba said: “I believe I can say it'll be an excellent entry point for many players, without forgetting the long-time fans who still wish to follow Geralt's adventures”.

That seems to be a pretty clear indicator that Geralt will still be around in this new Witcher trilogy. Whether or not he is the main playable character remains to be seen.

CD Projekt Red is currently developing The Witcher 4 (unofficial title) under the codename ‘Polaris', utilising Unreal Engine 5. The team working on the game has grown a lot this year as development on Cyberpunk 2077 started to wind down. Still, the game is not expected to release for several years.

KitGuru Says: While I'm not expecting to still be playing as Geralt full-time, I would be extremely happy to see CD Projekt Red continue to centre the games around him.

In 2022, CD Projekt Red unveiled an ambitious lineup of projects, headlined by a new instalment in The Witcher series. The team working on the game has remained small over the past 18 months but now, with work on Cyberpunk 2077 completed, CD Projekt Red is in the process of ramping up production on its new Witcher title.

The yet-to-be-named Witcher game, internally referred to as “Polaris”, entered pre-production in 2022, with the development team laying the groundwork and adapting to the newly adopted Unreal Engine 5 toolset. Now, with work on Cyberpunk 2077 winding down, CD Projekt Red has reported to investors that it is juggling its teams around, with most of the remaining Cyberpunk developers now transitioning to other projects, growing the Polaris team considerably.

At this stage, Polaris is the main project at CDPR, with the majority of the studio's developers now working on it.

With all of that said, it is worth pumping the brakes a little before fans get too excited. While the team working on the project is growing, that does not mean it will be finished and ready within the next couple of years. CD Projekt Red will be mindful of prior criticism it received over the development and rushed launch of Cyberpunk 2077 and has promised to put an end to its internal ‘crunch' culture, a process in which developers are unfairly overworked in an effort to get a project out faster.

This time around, we are likely to see CD Projekt Red take a little longer with its next Witcher game, taking the time needed to test more thoroughly and squash bugs prior to release. There is no projected release date yet for the game, but we could be in for another four or five year wait.

KitGuru Says: I've been replaying The Witcher 3 in recent weeks thanks to the next-gen update, so my love for this series is fresh on my mind at the moment. I'm incredibly excited to see a new Witcher game, even if it doesn't star Geralt, but it needs time and care to get it right. If CD Projekt Red repeats the mistakes it made leading up to Cyberpunk 2077, followed by a lengthy multi-year process of fixing the game, then the studio risks losing a lot of trust from not just its employees but fans as well.

2023 has been far from the best year for Destiny. Following the middling response to the game’s last major expansion ‘Lightfall’ and the delay of The Final Shape – as well as a bunch of layoffs – faith in the MMO-like FPS has fallen somewhat. While this sentiment remains, Bungie has now announced that they are crossing over with CDPR’s The Witcher.

Making the announcement via a press release, the team said “Today, Bungie revealed the upcoming in-game collaboration with CD PROJEKT RED coming alongside Season of the Wish on November 28. Guardians can style themselves as monster slayers with new cosmetics inspired by Geralt of Rivia. The crossover includes armor ornaments, a Ghost shell, ship, Sparrow, emote, and finisher.”

While a relatively new model for Destiny, the live-service title has had a few significant crossovers in the past, namely with a number of first-party PlayStation franchises including God of War; Horizon; Ghost of Tsushima and The Last of Us.

No price was given for the Witcher bundle, but if it’s anything like the prior collabs, expect it to cost a pretty penny.

CD Projekt Red has made some surprising Witcher-related announcements recently. Not only is The Witcher 3 soon getting support for a full mod editor, enabling creators to make their own quests and original content in the game, but the studio is also going back and updating The Witcher 1 & 2 for Mac players to support the latest Apple Silicon processors. Now, the newly updated Mac versions of those classic RPGs are officially available.

In an announcement last month, CD Projekt Red revealed that it is updating both The Witcher: Enhanced Edition and The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings to support macOS Ventura, as well as Apple Silicon processors like the M1 and M2.

Now, the new Mac update for these games is rolling out across all platforms, including the App Store, GOG and Steam. With the update, The Witcher 1 and The Witcher 2 will run on the latest version of macOS and will take advantage of the new M series processors.

This updated macOS support does come at a price though. After the update, the minimum requirements for both games will change, requiring macOS 11.0 or newer, ditching support for older OS X 10 versions. If you happen to be using an older Mac without an Apple Silicon processor, you will want to disable automatic updates as rolling back to a previous version can be a tricky task after the update has been installed.

KitGuru Says: Apple has been making a push for more game support on its systems, so it is nice to see updates like this coming through. Unfortunately, The Witcher 3 does not have a native Mac version, although it is playable using third-party programs like Crossover.

While Valve might be ditching macOS support for its new releases like Counter-Strike 2, plenty of other developers are actually increasing their support for the system. CD Projekt Red is amongst that group, as the company is going back to The Witcher 1 and The Witcher 2 to support newer model Mac computers.

In an announcement today, CD Projekt Red announced that it is updating both The Witcher: Enhanced Edition and The Witcher 2: Assassin of Kings to support macOS Ventura, as well as Apple Silicon processors like the M1 and M2.

If you happen to be a Mac user using an older Mac without Apple Silicon, you will want to disable automatic updates for both games if you own them on Steam. GOG is the only platform where rolling back to an earlier version will be available.

Apple recently unveiled games like No Man's Sky, Death Stranding and Resident Evil Village for iPhones, iPads and Macs and the company is looking to get more publishers developing for Apple Silicon-powered systems. Apple has also released a porting kit, available to developers interested in bringing their games over to Apple's platforms.

KitGuru Says: Chances are, this will impact very, very few people. As we know from Steam's monthly surveys, macOS users account for less than 1% of the Steam user base, which is also the reason Valve opted not to support the OS with Counter-Strike 2. However, if Apple does manage to turn the Mac into a viable gaming platform with its most recent push, then we should see support slowly increase over time.

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is finally set to launch in September, over 2 and a half years on from the initial release of the base game. This will be Cyberpunk 2077's only expansion, as CD Projekt Red is looking to leave its RED Engine tech behind and move all future projects to Unreal Engine 5. Once Phantom Liberty launches, a large chunk of the Cyberpunk team will be moving on to the next Witcher game.

CD Projekt Red announced a new Witcher trilogy last year, as well as a new partnership with Epic Games to use Unreal Engine 5 for these new games. Phantom Liberty has had resource priority for a while now, but with the expansion coming out in a few weeks' time, CD Projekt Red is planning to shuffle developers around to beef up the team working on the next Witcher game.

The new Witcher RPG entered pre-production last year and since then, the team working on it has grown to over 250 developers. Once Phantom Liberty ships, the majority of that team will also be moving on to The Witcher. The new game, codenamed ‘Polaris' does not have a release date yet and even though the team is scaling up, that doesn't mean the game will come out any faster.

While CD Projekt Red wants to release games more frequently, following Cyberpunk 2077, the company also needs to ensure it doesn't overwork its employees and spend more time checking for bugs to avoid another launch-day disaster. With that in mind, I'd still expect the next Witcher title to be around four to five years away at least.

Last year, CD Projekt Red announced a huge roadmap of titles, with a new Witcher trilogy, new Witcher spin-off games and a Cyberpunk 2077 sequel all making the list. Unfortunately right now, all of these projects are in the early stages and as a result, CD Projekt Red has found itself to be “overstaffed”.

This week, CD Projekt posted a new organisational update, confirming plans to lay off around 100 developers, which equates to just under 10 percent of the company's workforce.

In the announcement, CD Projekt Red CEO, Adam Kicińsk, said: “There’s no easy way to say this, but today we are overstaffed. We have talented people on board who are finishing their tasks and based on current and expected project needs, we already know we don’t have other opportunities for them in the next year.”

Typically, game development starts off with smaller teams in pre-production, with the team scaling up to full production size once all the groundwork and planning has taken place. While CD Projekt Red does have a lot of games in development right now, they are all in the early stages, so an announcement like this is in keeping with industry trends.

KitGuru Says: The games industry is constantly shedding talent. I do think studios should do more to keep their teams together for future projects but currently, that just isn't how the business works. As CD Projekt Red isn't a studio that relies heavily on live-service revenue and microtransactions, the need to reduce costs in-between major projects is a bit more understandable.

8 years on from its initial launch, The Witcher 3 is going stronger than ever. Originally released for PS4, Xbox One and PC, the game has seen continued support over the years, coming to the Switch and more recently the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S – adding ray-tracing among other enhancements to the latter systems. This continued support by CDPR has helped to push The Witcher 3 to over 50 million copies sold.

As part of CD Projekt’s most recent fiscal earnings report, the publisher revealed that 2015’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt has officially sold over 50 million copies. With such a high number of copies sold, The Witcher 3 is easily one of the best-selling games of all time – landing in 9th place between Pokemon Red/Green/Blue/Yellow (47.5 million) and Red Dead Redemption 2 (53 million copies sold).

Perhaps even more impressive is the fact that 10 million copies of The Witcher 3 were sold in the last year alone – truly surprising given the game’s age. Of course, as mentioned, CDPR have continually updated the game, with the ray-tracing/next-gen release launching late last year; undoubtedly giving the title a fresh lease on life.

With 50 million units, The Witcher 3 has now officially sold more than double the number of copies of The Witcher 1 and 2 combined. In totality, The Witcher series has now surpassed 75 million copies sold. It will be interesting to see how many more units TW3 will have shifted by the time the next Witcher game comes out. We will have to wait and see.

Last week, CD Projekt announced that it has “a new framework” in place for its Witcher spin-off game, Project Sirius. The game was primarily in development at The Molasses Flood, but unfortunately, it looks like recent changes to the game's development plan have led to layoffs.

In total, 29 developers have been let go from The Molasses Flood this week, just days after the announcement that Project Sirius development is winding up again. A few of those developers have announced their need for new employment on Twitter.

Later, CD Projekt confirmed to PCGamer that the layoffs included 21 employees at The Molasses Flood's US studio and 8 members of the team at the Poland studio. CD Projekt says the lay-offs are a direct result of changes made to the project.

Project Sirius is still in early development and was recently rebooted. Few official details about the game are known publicly, but the game is expected to be a co-op focused spin-off set in The Witcher universe.

Earlier this year, CD Projekt Red told investors that it had plans to ‘write off' funds spent on an upcoming game, Project Sirius, as the team plans to reboot and start again. Now, Project Sirius is back on track, CD Projekt has revealed.

Project Sirius, which is in development at CD Projekt-owned studio, The Molasses Flood, was rebooted following a recent evaluation of its “scope and commercial potential”, CD Projekt told investors in a regulatory note earlier this year. The project has incurred around $10 million in expenses thus far, which will “accordingly burden the company's financial results”.

The studio quickly began work on righting the ship and now, there is “a new framework” in place for development to continue, Eurogamer confirms.

Not much is officially known about this game, but it will feature multiplayer elements in some form and is likely a co-op-focused game, as revealed by previous job ads. Whether or not that has changed still remains to be seen.

Now, the company has explained this a bit more, citing a new effort to “cut costs early” rather than let things snowball.

CD Projekt Red has had some messy development schedules and issues keeping projects ‘within scope'. Sometimes all of that hard work and effort pays off, as we saw with The Witcher 3 and other times, it ends in disaster, as we saw with Cyberpunk 2077. Moving forward, CD Projekt Red has a multi-game roadmap, with multiple projects in the works with different budgets in mind. Project Sirius is supposed to be a lower budget title, worked on by a smaller team compared to The Witcher 4 (unofficial title) and the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077.

Witcher-3-e1469022686972.jpg

In a financial earnings call this week (via VGC), CD Projekt's CFO, Piotr Nielubowicz, spoke on the recent changes to Project Sirius, stating that “in order to stay innovative, we must experiment and be brave when trying new paths, but also stay in control and keep the right course”. He then points out that Project Sirius is in development at “a new studio” in the CDPR family.

The company will “keep evaluating the situation” with the thinking that it is “better to cut costs early, and even restart if needed, than to carry on”. CDPR CEO, Adam Kiscinki added that it was “a tough decision to make”.

Project Sirius is set to be a new spin-off game set in The Witcher universe, developed by CD Projekt-owned studio The Molasses Flood.

Last year, CD Projekt Red announced a slate of projects, including a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 and several Witcher games. We know that a Witcher 1 Remake is on the way, as well as a new trilogy of mainline Witcher RPGs. Alongside this, a smaller co-op focused Witcher game is also in the works, but it seems CD Projekt Red is taking that project back to the drawing board.

Project Sirius, which is in development at CD Projekt-owned studio, The Molasses Flood, is being rebooted following a recent evaluation of its “scope and commercial potential”, CD Projekt tells investors in a regulatory note. CD Projekt Red struggled with scope throughout Cyberpunk 2077's development and ultimately, the studio released the game in a rushed state. We can only hope that issues like that can be ironed out early for the company's upcoming slate of games.

CD Projekt Red learned a lot after making the first Witcher game. While that title is looked back on fondly by hardcore fans of the series, it is inaccessible to most due to never getting a console release, not to mention the outdated visuals and gameplay. Fortunately, a remake is on the way, and CD Projekt Red has now confirmed it will feature an open-world.

As previously announced in October, The Witcher is getting a remake. The remake will use the same tools as the new Witcher trilogy, which is moving on from Red Engine to Unreal Engine 5. The original Witcher released back in 2007 for PC, using an old BioWare engine. The game's combat is timing-based, turning the experience into more of a rhythm game rather than an action game. The original game also featured more open areas than The Witcher 2, but the technology wasn't there at the time to build a true open world, something that has now changed almost a decade later.

In its latest earnings call, CD Projekt CEO, Adam Kiciński, confirmed that the remake will feature an open world map, something that the company first introduced with The Witcher 3. While The Witcher featured large level zones, it was not a true open world, and with The Witcher 2, CD Projekt Red opted to build a more linear game with a better combat system.

While not confirmed, the remake will likely also feature a completely revamped combat system, possibly in keeping with any changes the studio plans to introduce for the new Witcher trilogy. As for when we'll get to play The Witcher remake, the game is still years off from release, so there is a long wait ahead.

KitGuru Says: The Witcher has a great story campaign, but its gameplay and graphics can be offputting to many fans of the newer games. Additionally, the first game never got a console release, meaning this remake will allow a huge number of players to pick it up for the first time.

While initially CD Projekt Red had planned to release next-gen updates for The Witcher 3 in 2021, it was later pushed to 2022. The enhanced version of The Witcher 3 was being developed by Saber Interactive, but CD Projekt Red took over development earlier this year, planning for a Q4 release. Now, we finally have a proper release date.

The Witcher 3 is seven years old as of this year. The new update will include graphical and performance enhancements for PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5, in addition to ray-tracing. CD Projekt Red has also previously teased “a few surprises” so there will be a little content added to the game too. That will include new content themed on Netflix's Witcher series, and a few community-made mods are being integrated into the game too.

CD Projekt Red initially tasked Saber Interactive with developing this new version of the game following the company's excellent work on the Nintendo Switch port. However, earlier this year, CD Projekt Red chose to break off its relationship with the studio and decided to finish working on the update itself.

Now after months of additional work, the update is finally ready to release. The update will arrive on the 14th of December for PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5. On next-gen consoles, you'll have to download the new ‘next-gen' version of the game. However, PC players will get the update automatically without the need to install a new version of the game.

KitGuru Says: We've been waiting on this update for a long time, so it is nice to finally see it nearing release. We still haven't had a good look at the graphical update, but CD Projekt Red will be streaming gameplay of the new version next week, so expect more details soon.

Last month CD Projekt Red revealed its upcoming roadmap, including multiple Witcher games. Aside from a complete remake of The Witcher 1, CD Projekt Red has also formed a new team to work on a brand new Witcher trilogy. Now, the new Witcher saga officially has a director.

Sebastian Kalemba has been at CD Projekt Red for a while now, having worked on The Witcher 3, its two expansions and Cyberpunk 2077. Now, he has been appointed as game director for the new Witcher saga.

Not much is known about the next Witcher saga at this time, but CD Projekt Red is in the process of setting up the core team to begin pre-production. Additionally, CD Projekt Red is also forming a new studio in Boston to work on the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, so both franchises will continue to be worked on moving forward.

The new Witcher game, and its planned sequels, will all be built on Unreal Engine 5, rather than CD Projekt Red's own RED Engine, which powered Cyberpunk 2077, as well as The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3.

KitGuru Says: We're still years away from seeing The Witcher 4, but we've had a number of encouraging announcements already this year. The move to Unreal Engine 5 should be particularly big, as it will allow the team to spend less time developing tools for the engine and more time on content creation.

Henry Cavill impressed many fans with his performance as Geralt of Rivia in the first seasons of The Witcher. Unfortunately, with Cavill now returning to his role as Superman in the DC movies, he is stepping away from The Witcher, and a replacement has already been chosen.

Since The Witcher's third season has already been filmed, Cavill will appear as Geralt once again in Season 3. From season 4 onwards, Cavill will no longer be in the show, instead, Liam Hemsworth will take on the role.

In his announcement, Cavill said: “My journey as Geralt of Rivia has been filled with both monsters and adventures, and alas, I will be laying down my medallion and my swords for Season 4. In my stead, the fantastic Mr Liam Hemsworth will be taking up the mantle of the White Wolf. As with the greatest of literary characters, I pass the torch with reverence for the time spent embodying Geralt and enthusiasm to see Liam's take on this most fascinating and nuanced of men.”

Netflix's new Geralt, Liam Hemsworth, also had some words to share: “As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure”.

CD Projekt Red learned a lot after making the first Witcher game. While that title is looked back on fondly by hardcore fans of the series, it is inaccessible to most due to never getting a console release, not to mention the outdated visuals and gameplay. Fortunately, CD Projekt Red is going back to its roots, announcing a full remake.

The Witcher is getting a remake, CD Projekt Red announced today to commemorate the game's 15th anniversary. In the past, CD Projekt Red did use a development partner to work on a console version, but it was later cancelled due to various issues. Now, the game is getting the full remake it really deserves.

The Witcher Remake is being developed under the codename ‘Canis Majoris', which was part of the roadmap CD Projekt Red unveiled earlier this year, detailing multiple new Witcher and Cyberpunk games.

The game will be rebuilt from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5 and all the tools the studio is using to create the new Witcher trilogy of games. Speaking on the remake, CD Projekt Red Studio Head, Adam Badowski said: “The Witcher is where it all started for us, for CD PROJEKT RED. It was the first game we made, ever, and it was a big moment for us then. Going back to this place and remaking the game for the next generation of gamers to experience it feels just as big, if not bigger”.

The original Witcher game was released back in 2007 for the PC. The game features timing-based combat, where you time your mouse clicks at the right point during a sword animation to move on to the next stage of the combo. Missing the window would start your combo up again. In The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3, CD Projekt Red completely reworked the combat system to what we know today, with a quick and heavy attack, a parry function and a dodge roll.

Unfortunately, there is no time frame on when this game may come out, so we could be waiting a while to see it in action.

KitGuru Says: While I don't necessarily love the gameplay in the original Witcher game, I have finished it a few times and I do love the overall story. With this remake, the first Witcher game will be reinvented to fall more in line with modern action games, which should be good news. Better yet, this remake will give a whole new audience of players a chance to experience the game.

Earlier this week, CD Projekt Red held its first investor event since the release of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and the resurgence of Cyberpunk 2077 across PC and consoles. As it turns out, the company is incredibly busy with new and upcoming projects. For starters, yes Cyberpunk 2077 will have a sequel, but there are also multiple new Witcher RPGs in the works and a new IP.

CD Projekt Red showed off its roadmap as part of the presentation. For The Witcher franchise, CD Projekt Red is working on a full new trilogy of games, starting with the game that was announced back in March. In addition, CDPR has licensed the IP to an undisclosed 3rd party studio led by Witcher 3 veterans, who are working on a separate Witcher game codenamed ‘Canis Majoris'. Finally, The Molasses Flood, a studio that CD Projekt acquired in the lead-up to Cyberpunk 2077, is now working on a new Witcher game codenamed ‘Sirius'.

As far as Cyberpunk goes, CD Projekt Red is working on the Phantom Liberty expansion, due out in 2023, and the company has a small team beginning Project Orion, which will be a full sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, aiming to “prove the full power and potential of the Cyberpunk universe”. Hopefully, the lessons learned during 2077's development, and post-launch will aid them in crafting a better sequel from the get-go.

Finally, CD Projekt Red is also working on Project Hadar, a brand new IP that will be the company's ‘third pillar', right alongside Cyberpunk and The Witcher. It is a standalone, original IP that has been in incubation since 2021, rather than a licensed title.

KitGuru Says: CD Projekt Red has a lot on its plate. Hopefully, we aren't waiting five years between each of these releases, otherwise, we'll be stuck on this roadmap for another 25 years.

While Netflix's live-action Witcher series has been well received so far, but there was quite a lengthy gap between Season 1 and Season 2. Fortunately it looks like Season 3 will be coming a bit sooner, with Netflix announcing plans to air in Summer 2023.

The Witcher Season 3 began filming earlier this year and just recently wrapped up. Now a few weeks later via Netflix Tudum, the company has announced that Season 3 will arrive in Summer 2023. A few months later in Winter 2023, spin-off series ‘Blood Origin' will air.

Season three will continue to tell the story of Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri going into the saga's second main book, Time of Contempt. As we saw in Season Two, the show is prepared to make some major changes here and there, so expect some twists and turns. It is entirely possible that certain character storylines play out very differently to the books .

The Witcher Season One started out somewhat rough, with different episodes jumping timelines in an effort to quickly establish the main characters and their relationships. With the second season, the showrunners went in a more traditional direction, making the show and storyline much easier to follow.

Earlier this year, CD Projekt Red surprisingly announced that it has begun working on its fourth major Witcher RPG, moving away from the RED Engine to Epic's Unreal Engine 5. The game was announced very early, as it is just entering pre-production. It seems that the financial fallout from Cyberpunk 2077's release could have been the catalyst behind the early announcement.

Aside from driving up recruitment at GDC in March, the early Witcher announcement may have also been an effort to attract new investors. According to Business Insider Poland, CD Projekt's stock value has dropped by over 75 percent since the release of Cyberpunk 2077 in late 2020.

Prior to Cyberpunk's launch, the company was valued at over 40 billion złoty, but following the controversial launch and slow rollout of fixes, the company's value has now dropped to around 10 billion złoty.

At this point, Cyberpunk 2077 has mostly been fixed, although it could be argued that the Xbox One and PS4 versions should still be avoided in favour of the much better Xbox Series X/S and PS5 versions. Cyberpunk 2077 is due to get at least one major expansion in 2023, and after that, CD Projekt should be going all-in on the next Witcher game.

In March, CD Projekt Red announced a new Witcher game during GDC. In a major shift, the studio also announced that it was moving all future development to Unreal Engine 5. Now, with UE5 officially available to all and after hiring for some new roles, The Witcher 4 has officially entered pre-production.

Pre-production is the earliest phase of development and should be where the foundational ideas for the game are put in place. It can be a lengthy process, that involves lots of trial and error. With that in mind, the game is going to be years away from release and it is unlikely that CD Projekt Red will say much more about the game for quite some time.

The Witcher 4 (unofficial title), will be the first game from CD Projekt Red to abandon the RED Engine, the studio's own in-house tools that powered The Witcher 2, The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. Over Cyberpunk 2077's development in particular, the studio faced a lot of issues and the hope is that by switching to the more industry-standardised Unreal Engine, a lot of those problems with production can be avoided.

Aside from the new Witcher game, CD Projekt Red is also working on a Cyberpunk 2077 expansion, due to release next year.

Last night, CD Projekt Red held its quarterly investors call, unveiling new milestones, changes within the company, and future plans at the studio. Alongside sales milestone updates on Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt has also reached new milestones for The Witcher franchise, which has now accrued over 65 million sales.

Back in 2020, The Witcher 3 was approaching the 30 million copies sold milestone. Now in 2022, the game has surpassed 40 million copies sold. Meanwhile, The Witcher series as a whole has surpassed 65 million copies sold.

We likely would have seen another boost in Witcher 3 sales in the first half of this year, but unfortunately, the game's next-gen and PC graphics update was delayed again. The update was previously being developed by Saber Interactive, but CD Projekt Red has since brought development in-house for unspecified reasons.

With work on Cyberpunk 2077 now largely finished, CD Projekt Red is shifting resources around to other projects. Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a big expansion, but a lot of resources are also now going towards work on the next Witcher game, which is entering development using Unreal Engine 5.

KitGuru Says: The Witcher series has been hugely successful and in a few years time, we'll hopefully be seeing a worthy follow-up.

Last night, CD Projekt Red held its quarterly investors call, unveiling new milestones, changes within the company, and future plans at the studio. Surprisingly, the studio gave us our first update on Cyberpunk 2077 sales in over a year.

In 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 sold 13.7 million copies, a figure that accounted for refunds given after the game's rocky launch. Now following a year of patches and the arrival of the next-gen console update, the game has surpassed 18 million copies sold.

Aside from the sales milestone, CD Projekt also revealed that it is “satisfied” with Cyberpunk 2077 and will no longer be focusing the bulk of its efforts on gameplay improvements and bug fixes:

“We believe in the long-term potential of our newest release; thus, one of our priorities for 2021 was to improve Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay. We are now satisfied with the game and encouraged by the gamers’ reception of its next-gen console edition, which launched this February. Altogether, we’ve now sold over 18 million copies of Cyberpunk 2077”, CD Projekt CFO, Piotr Nielubowicz said.

Moving forward, the company is shifting things around to focus on the game's upcoming expansion, and development on other projects, like the new Witcher game.

KitGuru Says: Despite its initial flaws and slow progress on fixes, Cyberpunk 2077 has been a commercial success. The game isn't finished just yet though, as there are still plans for free DLCs and a major expansion.

Yesterday, CD Projekt Red surprised us all with the announcement of a new Witcher saga, developed on Unreal Engine 5 as part of a new partnership with Epic Games. While many developers partnering with Epic tend to release PC games exclusively on the Epic Games Store, CD Projekt has made it clear that it won't be doing that.

While it is still too early for CD Projekt Red to unveil any real details about the next Witcher game, we do know that the title will be developed on Unreal Engine 5 and work on the game has only recently begun, so we are still years away from a trailer, let alone a release date. Still, the official Witcher Twitter account did step in last night to confirm that there are no plans to make the next game exclusive to one storefront.

With that in mind, we can expect The Witcher 4, (not a confirmed title), to release on GOG, EGS and Steam when the time comes. As for how long this partnership with Epic will last – CD Projekt has signed a 15-year deal.

As we noted yesterday, this Epic Games deal is very significant for CD Projekt Red. For The Witcher 2, The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, the studio used its own in-house engine, the RED Engine. This strategy ended up causing headaches over the course of development on Cyberpunk 2077. Moving forward, CD Projekt Red has committed to using Unreal Engine instead, which is more widely used across the industry.

KitGuru Says: The idea of a Witcher game being EGS exclusive always seemed a little far-fetched given that CD Projekt owns and operates GOG and has committed to DRM-free releases for its major titles. Still, it is good to get confirmation on this.

We've known for quite some time that CD Projekt Red plans to return to The Witcher IP eventually. Today in a surprise announcement, CD Projekt Red has confirmed that development has begun on a new Witcher saga – marking the start of a potential new trilogy.

We don't know much about this new Witcher game yet, but CD Projekt has offered a teaser image for the time being. If you're confused about the timing of this announcement, then you aren't alone. Fortunately, we can clear things up for you – the true purpose of this announcement is to reveal CD Projekt's new partnership with Epic Games.

That's right, CD Projekt Red is now in a ‘strategic partnership' with Epic Games, which will see the studio move away from its own RED Engine and over to Unreal Engine 5. Starting with this new Witcher game, CD Projekt Red will now develop using Epic's engine and tools, rather than its own in-house systems. This change is very significant and has likely come about due to the development issues experienced working on Cyberpunk 2077. Of course, all future Cyberpunk 2077 content will still continue to use the RED Engine, including the upcoming expansion.

Speaking on the partnership, CD Projekt Red CTO, Paweł Zawodny, said: “One of the core aspects of our internal RED 2.0 Transformation is a much stronger focus on technology, and our cooperation with Epic Games is based on this principle. From the outset, we did not consider a typical licensing arrangement; both we and Epic see this as a long-term, fulfilling tech partnership.”

“It is vital for CD PROJEKT RED to have the technical direction of our next game decided from the earliest possible phase as; in the past, we spent a lot of resources and energy to evolve and adapt REDengine with every subsequent game release. This cooperation is so exciting, because it will elevate development predictability and efficiency, while simultaneously granting us access to cutting-edge game development tools.”

Currently, CD Projekt Red is working on the first major expansion for Cyberpunk 2077. While a second expansion has been rumoured, CDPR has only confirmed plans for one expansion so far. We should get more information on that later in the year.

KitGuru Says: A new Witcher game is officially on the way, which is exciting news, but it is likely going to be several years before we even get a glimpse of the game in action.

After cancelling plans for a dedicated multiplayer game set in the Cyberpunk universe, CD Projekt Red pivoted to working on multiplayer modes for its single-player franchises, rather than creating new spin-offs. This week, the studio confirmed that it is working on multiplayer functionalities for both Cyberpunk and The Witcher.

During an investors call earlier this week, CD Projekt President, Adam Kiciński, addressed questions about future multiplayer projects, saying “we are planning to add multiplayer functionality” to both Cyberpunk and The Witcher, but this process will happen “gradually”.

As reported by VGC, Kiciński went on to add that it is “not revealing” which franchise will get multiplayer first. However, the studio hopes to start small so it can learn, improve and expand its multiplayer functionalities over time.

These multiplayer modes will be powered by recently created technology for CD Projekt Red's in-house game engine. There is still no word on when we might see multiplayer in a Witcher or Cyberpunk game, but hopefully we'll hear more sometime next year once Cyberpunk 2077 is back on the right track.

KitGuru Says: It would have been cool to have online integration for Gwent matches in The Witcher 3, although that would likely eat away at the popularity of GWENT as a standalone game. Would you like to see more multiplayer functionality introduced into titles like The Witcher and Cyberpunk?

The first season of Netflix’s The Witcher was met with a great deal of enthusiasm, with the show becoming one of the streaming service’s biggest ever. It was therefore not surprising to see a season 2 confirmed. Ahead of this second season however, it has also been announced that season 3 is on the way.

Making the announcement on Twitter, the official Witcher page said “Toss a coin to our growing Witcher universe! We can officially announce The Witcher Season 3, along with a second anime feature film, and a new Kids and Family series set in the world of The Witcher.”

While the announcement of a season 3 came as no surprise, it is interesting to see the anime getting a second entry. Reception was positive, and it's good to see that viewership must have been equally as positive for Netflix to order a second movie.

What is perhaps the most curious announcement was the fact that a children's show is in production. The world of the Witcher is famously bleak, depressing and bloody, and so making a child-appropriate show is certainly a choice. Of course, The Witcher is a hot property right now, and so it makes sense that Netflix would want to capitalise on it. Still, it will be interesting to see the final result of this children’s show.

CD Projekt Red first branched out into free-to-play mobile games a few years ago with a standalone version of GWENT, which is still running today. Last year, the company announced a mobile Augmented Reality game based on The Witcher IP – The Witcher: Monster Slayer, which is releasing today.

This game is developed by Spokko, a smaller studio within the CD PROJEKT family. It is a free-to-play, augmented reality RPG for iOS and Android set in The Witcher universe. The game is set years before the modern trilogy, during a time where a ‘Witcher’ is still a very new profession.

Taking inspiration from games like Pokemon Go, The Witcher: Monster Slayer will have fans roaming their real-life local streets and encountering monsters to defeat along the way. Players will be able to use weather conditions, potions and other gear to their advantage during these fights, just as we're used to doing in the main Witcher games.

The Witcher: Monster Slayer is available on Android and iOS starting from today. Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: This game has been in testing for over a year now, so it will be interesting to see the final game in action. Have any of you tried this out already today?

After multiple delays due to the coronavirus and an on-set injury, filming has officially wrapped on The Witcher Season Two. The next season will adapt the Blood of Elves novel and will introduce The Wild Hunt.

The second season for Netflix’s The Witcher began filming last year, but the coronavirus pandemic caused delays. When filming was able to begin again, Henry Cavill unfortunately suffered an injury on set, which pushed things back a little further. Fortunately, things are now back on track, with filming officially wrapping up this week:

We know a few things about the show’s second season – nilfgaardian soldiers now have better armour, Henry Cavill’s Geralt costume has been updated and leaked set images show that we’ll see The Wild Hunt at least once.

The season will adapt the Blood of Elves novel, which is the first major book in the novel series, taking place after the two collections of short stories, some of which we saw adapted in individual episodes throughout season one.

There is no release date yet for The Witcher’s second season, but hopefully we’ll see it before the end of this year. There is still plenty of editing and post-production work to be done.

KitGuru Says: I really enjoyed The Witcher’s first season, even if the timeline jumping was a bit confusing. Fortunately, that will be fixed in season two, as we already have the backstory for our three main characters – Geralt, Yennefer and Ciri. Are many of you looking forward to The Witcher’s second season?
