Lenovo Group has issued a special statement denying plans to cease selling Microsoft Windows-based media tablets with displays smaller than 10” in the U.S. and Canada. Apparently, the company is working on new tablets with smaller screens for the aforementioned markets. The slates are projected to become available later this year.

“We will continue to bring new Windows devices to market across different screen sizes, including a new 8” tablet and 10”tablet coming this holiday,” the statement by Lenovo reads. “Our model mix changes as per customer demand, and although we are no longer selling ThinkPad 8 in the U.S., and we have sold out of Miix 8”, we are not getting out of the small-screen Windows tablet business as was reported by the media. In short, we will continue to sell both 8 and 10 inch Windows tablets in both the U.S. and non-U.S markets.”

Last week a representative for Lenovo said that the demand for small Windows-based tablets in the U.S. was lower than in other countries and the company made decision to cease selling such products in North America.

As it appears, the company simply plans to offer different tablets with Windows and smaller screens going forward. It is likely that the new tablets will be powered by new hardware. It is also possible that they will be more affordable than the ThinkPad 8 and the Miix 8.

It is interesting to note that Microsoft itself decided not to launch its own Surface Mini tablet based on the Windows RT operating system earlier this year, which indirectly confirms that users who prefer Windows platform also prefer larger displays.

KitGuru Says: It will be interesting to see what exactly Lenovo plans to offer later this year… Small tablets featuring Windows may not be really popular, but everything may change if Lenovo offers something truly competitive.

Several months after Microsoft Corp. made its Windows operating system free for devices with displays smaller than 9”, Lenovo Group decided to discontinue its Windows-based tablets with 8” screens in the U.S. because of the lack of interest from the end-users. The same actions can follow in other parts of the world. It is noteworthy that the company continues to sell small tablets with Google Android.

“In North America, we're seeing stronger interest in the larger screen sizes for Windows tablets and are pleased with initial customer demand for the ThinkPad 10,” said Raymond Gorman, a Lenovo spokesman, reports IDG News Service.

Lenovo used to sell two Windows 8-based tablets with 8”-class screens in the U.S.: IdeaPad Miix 2 (8” display with 1280*800 resolution, quad-core Intel Atom Z3740 “Bay Trail” processor, 2GB LPDDR3 memory, up to 64GB NAND flash storage, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi 802.11 b/g/n and so on) for $299 as well as ThinkPad 8 (8.3” display with 1920*1200 resolution, quad-core Intel Atom Z3770 “Bay Trail” processor, 2GB DDR3 memory, up to 128GB NAND flash storage, Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n 2*2 and so on) for $429. At present both models are listed as “sold out” in the company's online store.

Lenovo claims that demand for small screen Windows tablets is only soft in North America, whereas in other countries the demand remains significant. Since Lenovo continues to sell tablets with 7” and 8” displays featuring the Android operating system for $129 – $249 in the U.S. and Canada, it looks like those, who want Windows 8, prefer larger screens. Perhaps, people just associate Windows with productivity first and want to be able to do some work on those tablets. Or maybe those 8” tablets from Lenovo were just not too competitive in terms of price compared to the company’s Android-powered offerings.

“In other markets, particularly Brazil, China, and Japan, the demand for ThinkPad 8 has been much stronger, so we are adjusting our ThinkPad 8 inventories to meet increasing demand in those markets. If market demand for ThinkPad 8 changes, we will re-evaluate our strategy,” said Mr. Gorman.

Lenovo continues to offer IdeaPad Miix 2 and ThinkPad 10 tablets with 10”-class displays in North America.

After Microsoft released its Windows RT operating system in 2012, a very limited amount of partners decided to offer tablets featuring it. All these hardware makers have discontinued their Windows RT-based offerings by now. It is interesting to note that all of them started to phase out their WinRT products from the U.S. and Canadian markets first.

Slow demand for small tablets based on Microsoft's Windows operating system in North America partly explains why the software giant decided not to release its Surface Mini.

KitGuru Says: It will be very interesting to learn how popular Windows-based tablets with 7” and 8” displays are in well-developed countries in general. Perhaps, people just do not want Windows on smaller screens? Share your thoughts in the comments or on our Facebook page, guys!
