After plenty of extra time in development, Lenovo is now officially ready to launch the world's first foldable PC. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold was first unveiled last year, with a more recent prototype shown at CES 2020. Now all these months later, the device is ready for prime time, although it is very expensive.

Like the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold has a crease in the screen, allowing you to fold it all the way shut, or open it all the way into a tablet-like form-factor. Unlike Samsung's smartphone though, this is a fully functional PC, complete with a 13-inch OLED display, an optional detachable keyboard, an easel stand, dual USB-C ports, 8GB of RAM and more.

You get up to 1TB of storage, an Intel Core i5 processor using Intel Hybrid Technology and a 50Wh battery. Finally, the system also takes advantage of new wireless technologies like 5G and Wi-Fi 6.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold is launching with a $2,499 price tag and depending on specs and accessories, the cost can rise to over $3,000.

Lenovo Group this week said that it had sold its 100 millionth ThinkPad notebook. To celebrate the milestone for the legendary brand, Lenovo introduced its third-generation ThinkPad X1 Carbon laptop, the world’s lightest high-performance 14” laptop.

“Since the original ThinkPad 700, ThinkPad engineers have continued to drive innovation by making each new ThinkPad better than the last,” said Yang Yuanqing, chairman and chief executive of Lenovo. “Reaching 100 million units sold proves they are succeeding.”

ThinkPad notebooks were originally manufactured by IBM Corp. and the name is a result of the company’s corporate slogan “Think” introduced originally in the 1920s. Although initially IBM corporate naming committee opposed the brand (since they preferred to have numbers instead of names at the time), the trademark was kept since it was beloved by the public.

The first ThinkPad notebook – the IBM ThinkPad 700 – was introduced in late 1992. The 700-series laptops featured Intel 486 SLC processor as well as 9.5” monochrome or 10.4” active-matrix colour displays. The weight of the machines was 2.9 or 3.4 kilograms. While the first ThinkPads barely have anything in common with the current models, it is noteworthy that the mobile PCs retained strict black colour as well as the legendary TrackPoint pointing device.

Throughout its 22 years history, ThinkPad became the first notebook PC to be used onboard of space stations and introduced a number of industry’s first innovations. Today, the ThinkPad laptops remain among the best laptops on the market.

“When we acquired IBM’s PC business, we made a promise to not just protect the ThinkPad franchise, but to make it even better, even stronger,” said Mr. Yuanqing. “Today, ThinkPad continues to be one of the most respected brands in the industry, fueling Lenovo’s rise to number 1 in the global PC industry. Now, even as Lenovo expands into mobile devices, servers, and ecosystem and cloud computing, ThinkPad will remain at the core of our strategy and the heart of our business. It is an honor to continue to bring this legendary brand to our customers, and I look forward to many more ThinkPad milestones to come.”

The third-generation ThinkPad X1 Carbon features a 14” super-bright display with up to 2560*1440 resolution and 10-point multi-touch technology, it weighs around 1.31 kilograms and measures up to 17.7mm in height. Thanks to usage of the latest Intel Core i7-5600U “Broadwell” processor with vPro technology (two cores, up to 3.20GHz, 4MB cache, Intel HD Graphics 5500, 15W TDP), the new laptop can work up to 10.9 hours on a battery charge. The machine is built of carbon fiber and is pretty rugged.

The laptops also include up to 8GB of DDR3L memory, up to 512GB Samsung SM951 solid-state drive with PCI Express 3.0 interface (that offers 80 per cent performance improvement compared to previous-generation models), 802.11b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, Gigabit Ethernet and other necessary things. Unlike other ultra-thin notebooks, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon features USB 3.0 (including one always-on USB 3.0), OneLink 1.0, mDP, mini HDMI, 3.5mm TRRS audio/mic jack etc. A unique thing about the ThinkPad X1 Carbon is that it can integrate an optional 3G/4G WWAN modem. The laptop runs Microsoft Windows 8.1.

The new ThinkPad X1 Carbon will become available later this month starting at $1249 in the U.S. and at £1235 in the U.K.

KitGuru Says: While the ThinkPad in general remains an iconic brand, the PCs are not as reliable as they used to be and are nor as desirable as they used to be for many reasons. Lenovo does its best to keep the brand in the premium league, but from time to time it introduces cheap ThinkPad models that greatly devalue the trademark. Another problem is that ThinkPads ceased to be the most innovative laptops in the industry. Even the newest ThinkPad X1 Carbon does not feature a retina-class display, something that Apple MacBook Pro laptops have featured since 2013.

The IBM ThinkPad has legendary status, and when Lenovo took over production they were keen to take this iconic range into the next century. Equally so, Lenovo were aware that they couldn't mess with the design too much, especially as the primary focus has always been the business audience. The ThinkPad has always been recognised for the superb keyboard, red ‘pointing stick' and world class build quality. Today we are looking at the latest ThinkPad X1, entitled ‘Carbon', a refresh on the original X1 which we reviewed in September last year.

Lenovo offer a wide range of configurations featuring Core i5 or Core i7 processor. The starting price is around £1039.99, although Lenovo seem to continually run web deals reducing the final price by over £100.

Key features:

  • Carbon fiber top cover and roll cage – as strong as aluminum at 1/3 the weight
  • Lenovo RapidCharge, for five hours’ battery life on a 35-minute charge
  • Lenovo Mobile Access, for contract-free 3G when you need it
  • Remote manageability via vPro
  • Superior web conferencing with face-tracking 720p HD webcam, dual-array microphones, and keyboard noise suppression
  • Fingerprint reader, TPM and BIOS encryption, for advanced security
  • Dolby® Home Theater™ v4 and Intel® HD 4000 integrated graphics, for rich sound and vision
  • Share connectivity with Mobile Hotspot technology
  • Best-in-class keyboard, with progressive backlighting and larger island-style keys
  • Glass multi-gesture touchpad
  • InstantResume wakes from hibernate nearly four times faster than other laptops
  • Ports include one each of USB 3.0 SuperSpeed, always-on USB 2.0, Mini DisplayPort with audio, and 4-in-1 SD Card reader

There are very few laptops as appealing as the Thinkpad, and Lenovo have updated the X1 model with carbon fibre materials. We reviewed the X1 on Kitguru last September.

Lenovo have increased the screen size from 13 inch to 14 inch but the weight is down, thanks to the use of a carbon fibre rollcage. The new carbon fibre ThinkPad X1 is also the lightest 14 inch business class ultrabook available, say the company.

Lenovo are shipping the Carbon X1 with a 1600×900 resolution screen, a 720p HD camera which has face tracking capabilities and a backlit keyboard. It has built in 3G connectivity as well for business users. The machines will feature Intel third generation Ivy Bridge processors.

Lenovo claim that the new version of the X1 will feature the same ‘Rapid Charge' feature, which means that the battery will recover from dead to 80% in only 30 minutes.

Pricing has not yet been confirmed but we expect it to be around the same price as the original, which means it should be an excellent purchase.

Kitguru says: Another award winner? We hope so.
