While every serious PC gamer might long for a 32in gaming monitor like the AOC AGON AG322QCX or HDR-capable Samsung C32HG70, the sad reality is that not everyone has the kind of cash (or desk space) required to get one of these beasts. But is this a reason to put up with an inferior gaming experience? At least on paper, the 24in Acer Predator XB241H gives you all the highlights of a ‘true’ gaming display, while eschewing the arguably frivolous extras such as RGB lighting, a USB hub or an external controller.

It offers a speedy 180Hz overclocked refresh rate paired with a zippy 1ms response time and modest 1920 x 1080 resolution, which should make for a very smooth experience no matter how intense the action gets. Especially when it’s combined with Nvidia’s proprietary, variable refresh rate G-Sync technology, though you will only get the benefits hereof if your gaming machine is sporting a graphics card from the green team.

And arguably, having it all in a compact 24in package makes the action easier to focus on – though we solidly subscribe to the “bigger is better” philosophy when it comes to displays for any kind of work or entertainment (within reason, naturally; sticking a 55in UHD telly on your desk may stretch your eyeballs further than they’re happy with).

Nor does the XB241H skimp on looks and ergonomics, coming with similar design highlights and adjustability as its more high-end Predator stalemates, such as the Z35. There is even good news for fans of 3D, as this is one of the few monitors available today that still supports Nvidia’s 3D Vision. Alas glasses were not included so unfortunately, we cannot give you our thoughts on this part of the experience.

Aside from its relatively low resolution, the only potential fly in the ointment is that image quality may suffer due to Acer’s use of a TN panel here, which usually means limited viewing angles, contrast and colour fidelity. So let’s find out if the Predator XB241H is an apex predator or merely a scavenger under another name.

This week, AOC is taking on the high-end monitor market with its new monitor, the AG271QX AGON gaming monitor, featuring a 2560×1440 resolution as well as the 144Hz refresh rate that many gamers crave. It's even got adaptive sync technology equipped, so it's shaping up too be quite the performer.

This is the first monitor to be part of AOC's new AGON-series, which aim to offer plenty of premium gaming features found on higher end monitors. The AG271QX is a TN variant with FreeSync, which allows a Radeon GPU to control the refresh rate of the monitor anywhere between 30Hz and 144Hz.

AOC

AOC has included some interesting features too, including Low Input Lag mode,.which disables picture post-processing on the monitor’s electronics and, therefore, accelerates the command pass-through from mouse, keyboard and gamepad to result in immediate actions. There is also the AOC Shadow Control, which enables gamers to quickly adjust contrast in overly dark or bright areas without sacrificing the quality of well-balanced areas across the rest of the screen.

This monitor also comes with a sturdy stand that allows for height, pivot and tilt adjustments. The AOC AG271QX AGON gaming monitor launches in June with a price tag of £479.99.

KitGuru Says: We have tested plenty of AOC monitors in the past and have been impressed so it will be interesting to see how this one stacks up, particularly against other high-refresh rate 1440p monitors, which seem to be gaining a lot of traction with gamers. Are any of you looking to make the jump to a higher resolution, high refresh rate monitor this year?

Availability of content in 4K ultra-high-definition resolution is very limited these days. Nonetheless, availability of inexpensive TVs with 3840*2160 resolution seems to be getting broader and the prices are getting lower. Walmart and Seiki Digital on Tuesday lowered the prices of select UHDTVs and it is now possible to get a 4K TV for as low as $299.

Seiki Digital, a wholly owned subsidiary of Tsinghua Tongfang Company, at present offers 39”, 50” and 55” 4K UHDTVs for $299 (£174, €218), $429 (£250, €313) and $579 (£337, €423), respectively, in Walmart stores in the U.S., reports 9to5toys. At present there are no comparable deals in the U.K. or Europe.

Exact specifications of the TVs are unknown, but expect TN panels capable of displaying the 3840*2160 resolution with 30Hz refresh rate and 176-degree vertical and 176-degree horizontal viewing angles. The TVs feature integrated digital TV tuner, three HDMI 1.4 inputs, two USB inputs and so on.

Keeping in mind the prices, the 4K TVs from Seiki are truly nothing special from technology point of view. However, if you want to watch 4K movies in native resolution and cannot afford a high-end display or TV, these devices should probably be considered.

KitGuru Says: One of the reasons why Chinese makers sell 4K TVs at low prices is probably the lack of content. What remains to be seen is what those bargains will mean for the TV industry in general. Many TV makers hoped to improve their margins selling 4K TVs, but it will be something nearly impossible to do if a 55” 4K UHD TV costs just $579 even now.
