For many, a staple part of their childhood gaming habits would have been to trade in older games in order to buy the latest and greatest new releases. With the rise of digital media, we have seen retailers cut back on their in-person presence. One way in which UK retailer GAME looks to be downscaling is by ending their long-running trade-in service.

As reported by Eurogamer, the UK’s largest gaming retailer ‘GAME’ is set to cease a majority of their trade-ins from next month. While the retailer itself has yet to officially announce the news, the company’s staff have reportedly been informed, with trade-ins said to no longer be accepted after the 16th of February.

While video game trade-ins have never been the most cost-efficient way to sell old games, they are a convenient way to do so, and as such it is a shame to see the practice slowly but surely fading into obscurity.

Fortunately, GAME will continue to accept trade-ins for consoles and other gaming hardware – though who knows how long that will last. While it is a great shame that gaming retailers continue to shrink with each passing year, at the very least the rise in Facebook’s marketplace (and other equivalents) means you can still buy and sell pre-owned games for relatively cheap.

Like many of its competitors, Samsung offers its own trade-in scheme as incentive to upgrade to its latest and greatest smartphones. Unfortunately, something somewhere seems to have gone terribly wrong, as a rise in complaints suggest that users are being wrongfully rejected for their eligible devices.

Samsung has often been considered a pioneer for its trade-in system, forgoing rebates and lengthy waits in favour of an instant subtraction of the device’s value when purchasing a new smartphone. The customer is then tasked to send off their handset for evaluation, ensuring that the smartphone meets all requirements.

The company asks participants to send in devices powered on and factory reset, without cracks and ensuring it hasn’t been placed on a blacklist. Depending on the model of smartphone sent to the facility, users can net themselves up to $550 for the latest handsets, while $300, $150, $100, $75, and $50 tiers were offered for select aging devices.

Failure to meet these necessities results in a charge that for many has been an unwelcome surprise, according to Android Police. Cliff Levine states that he traded in a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 for an S10 series device, only to be met with a full $550 fine as the device had somehow been registered as a Galaxy S7, a handset ineligible for the trade-in scheme.

Levine is far from alone, as many more occurrences have appeared on the official GalaxyS10 Subreddit. Many have photographic or video evidence of sending their product off for the trade-in, all met with the same fate of Samsung telling them that they had in fact sent in a different device. In one particular instance, a user was told that they hadn’t sent in a smartphone, but a keyboard instead.

In some cases, Samsung has stated that users have not fulfilled requirements as trade-ins are both without power and not factory reset. This is a paradox, given that it’s impossible to check he latter if the device doesn’t have power.

Beyond the proof provided by those that claim to be affected, it’s difficult for us to confirm truth behind the accounts but the sheer number of affected participants suggests that there is something going on with Samsung’s process. The company has yet to respond for comment or offer consolation to those seemingly plagued with the issue.

KitGuru Says: It’s perhaps best to wait if you’re tempted to make use of the trade-in program, at least until Samsung speaks out about the alleged problems. Hopefully those affected aren’t too taken aback by issues, as $550 is nothing to scoff at.

PC gamers have been getting used to digital-only gaming for years now and console gamers are adopting it pretty fast with this current generation of consoles. However, one of the big downsides to owning a game digitally is not being able to sell it on when you're finished, so over the weekend, Microsoft began asking if customers would be open to ‘selling back' their digital game purchases.

The question was part of an Xbox customer survey that was actually under NDA. However, one Reddit user broke the silence and posted the information online, the post has been removed but the picture is still floating around. The survey said: “If the console digital games store for the console you owned offered customers the option to ‘sell back' their digital games to the store for 10 percent of the purchase price in store credit, would you be interested in such an offer?”

S3oQozm

It seems that a 10 percent buy back price is what Microsoft is sticking to for now. Right now on the Xbox One digital store, most games arrive with a £55/$60 price tag, so as long as you sold back while the price was still high, you would get $6/£5.50 back from your purchase. Doing this would revoke your digital license for a game and put credit in your Microsoft account, with no option of transferring that back to your bank account.

Microsoft hasn't spoken out on this just yet but it seems to be an idea they are playing around with internally right now.

KitGuru Says: This is a good idea but I do think that a 10 percent offer is a bit low. I would rather see a digital games refund system put in place before something like this, similarly to how it is handled on Steam right now. What do you guys think of this? Would you sell back your digital games?

Amazon's trade-in scheme, which allows customers to send in old products like games, books and clothes to earn credit against other purchases, is coming to a close. Anyone wishing to take advantage of it has until the 31st of August to get their returns in, after which Amazon will no longer offer any such service and all products sent in beyond that date will be automatically rejected and returned.

“You can submit trade-in items as normal up to and including 31st August 2015. No Trade-In orders can be submitted online after the closure date. Please ensure your trade-in items are dispatched within 7 days after your submission,” Amazon said in its help section update.

It did however clarify that users were still welcome to sell their products through the Amazon marketplace system, though that does require a lot more input from the user. It also clarified that any existing gift cards, or those obtained before the cut off date would remain valid for the foreseeable future, though would -as usual – be subject to all gift card terms and conditions.

Response to the news has been mixed, with some claiming they had a terrible experience where games were rejected and returned in a worse conditon than when sent in, whilst others claimed it was excellent with many trades that went through without a hitch.

Apple is now accepting old Android devices in its stores, in exchange for credit towards an iPhone purchase. The new trade-in program starts today, aside from Android devices; Apple also accepts BlackBerry devices and Windows Phones.

The trade-in scheme rolls out in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France and Italy, so it is available in a lot of places. Obviously, the phone will still need to have some value for it to be eligible for credit towards an iPhone.

Apple initially began accepting trade-ins back in 2013, though it never operated the program entirely on its own. The trade-in scheme is run through a company called Brightstar, which is why it is happy to accept Android devices.

Trade-ins are never the best value option though. They are convenient but you will still likely get more for your device by selling on eBay.

KitGuru Says: iPhones are pretty expensive, so even after trading in a device, the final bill will probably still be quite high. Would any of you guys trade in an old Android device for an iPhone? Not everyone is a fan of the closed off system that iOS operates.

There's a lot of people getting excited about the next console generation right now and understandably so; we're getting very close to the release of both Microsoft and Sony's new systems. However spending hundreds of pounds on a box that isn't a PC, doesn't help companies like Alienware, which is why it's offering its own trade-in scheme, for consoles and PCs. Drop off your Xbox 360, PS3 , Wii or PC and you can get as much as $200 off a system from the gaming PC maker.

Alienware has offered a PC trade-in scheme for some time, letting you send it in after buying something new from the now Dell owned system manufacturer, but this represents the first time it's done the same for consoles. It works in the same way as the traditional scheme: you buy a new PC, laptop or tablet from Alienware, then once it's arrived, you send your old gaming rig off to Alienware, at which point it sends you cashback money straight to your bank account.

alienwaretrade

There are a couple of stipulations though: the console or PC can't be more than five years old; in the case of the Xbox 360, it has to the be the slim version with a minimum 250GB HDD; with the PS3, it can be fat or slim, with minimum HDD sizes 60GB and 120GB respectively. A Wii is just a Wii to Alienware though and you still get $200 for it.

The only downside to all this, is that the console trade in scheme only appears to be available to US customers at the moment. We contacted Alienware to confirm this and it told us that only people within the US could receive this sort of cash back deal.

There is a trade-in scheme for the UK and other countries offering up to £200, but it's limited to PCs and laptops.

KitGuru Says: Maybe some of our US readers are looking to upgrade their PC instead of going next-gen console. Would something like this help you get a new, contemporary system? Or are you more likely to just build it yourself?
