The Life is Strange series has been known to push the boundaries of choice-based narrative games, with the titles finding the right balance of story, gameplay, unique concepts – and of course, choices. Since the release of LiS: True Colours back in 2021, we have heard little regarding a new potential entry in the series. That being said, if new job listings are anything to go by, then work is already underway on a new game.

As discovered by Taha Farrukh of VeryAliGaming, multiple new job listings were posted by Deck Nine Games – the studio behind all newer Life is Strange titles. Across these various job titles, Deck Nine has given us some indication of what their next game will be, with one listing saying “Deck Nine Games is looking to hire a Lead Programmer to lead a team as we develop an unannounced AAA single-player adventure game.”

Of course, Life is Strange is not the only single-player adventure game in existence, but further evidence that it might indeed be LiS can be seen, with the studio stating “do you love single player games? Do you enjoy crafting narrow but deep experiences? Can you love a game equally for its gameplay and its characters, its themes and its story arcs?” – all of which have been of great importance throughout all Life is Strange titles.

Further details shared include the fact that this title will feature “non-linear narrative systems and structures” as well as “Puzzle design…especially in the context of narrative adventures” again, something which the Life is Strange series has been known to do.

Though not exclusive to Life is Strange, this upcoming unannounced title will run on Unreal Engine 4 and will support ray tracing. Life is Strange True Colours was built on Unreal Engine 4 and also featured ray tracing, meaning that pretty much all descriptors released so far line up with the Life is Strange franchise.

Of course, Deck Nine could be working on a completely unrelated title, with it simply sharing many technical aspects with Life is Strange. The IP is strong however, and True Colours managed to have the biggest launch of any title in the series, and so we will simply have to wait and see.

DRM is the bane of many PC players, with Denuvo being the most famous (or infamous). While almost all games with DRM eventually get cracked by fans, developers have begun taking it into their own hands, patching the DRM after launch. In what is perhaps the quickest turnaround yet however, Square Enix has removed its DRM for Life is Strange: True Colours just 4 days after launch.

As discovered by ResetEra user ‘AshenOne’, SteamDB was recently updated to show that just 4 days after the launch of Life is Strange: True Colours, Square Enix released an update to the game on Steam which “Removed 3rd-Party DRM – Denuvo Anti-tamper.”

While it may seem like an odd decision to do so very shortly after launch, major video game releases are typically front loaded sales-wise, with a large portion of the game’s sales being amassed from pre-orders and day-one sales. Furthermore, the software has historically been the cause of many issues, both performance and graphic related.

In the case of True Colours, Denuvo’s DRM seemed to negatively affect those with ultrawide monitors, and so its removal now allows for a smoother gaming experience.

With so much negativity surrounding the DRM, it is surprising to see so many developers and publishers using the service, especially as it is not cheap to implement – costing over £100,000. Whatever the reason may be, it is good to see Denuvo removed from Life is Strange: True Colours. Hopefully fans don’t use this opportunity to pirate the title however, as it is worth supporting Deck Nine and their games.

The PS5 and Xbox Series X|S have ushered in a new standard when it comes to video game framerates, with almost every new title offering at least a 60fps option on the new systems. It is therefore surprising to see Life is Strange: True Colours capped at 30, though according to the developers it is in service of “higher cinematic fidelity.”

Life is Strange: True Colours released on the 10th of September to generally favourable reviews. That being said, many fans were left disappointed and confused by some technical decisions. Despite being a cross-generational game, coming to all current and older systems including the PS5, Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, the console version of True Colours – no matter the system – is locked to 30fps.

Justifying this decision, the team at Deck Nine said “Regarding framerate: Life is Strange: True Colors was designed to be a cinematic, performance-driven narrative adventure. Capping at 30fps allowed us to target higher cinematic fidelity on every platform.”

While it is true that the game does not involve neither fast-paced action nor twitchy response requirements, the first year of the new systems has been standardised by 60fps options – even if there is also a 30fps mode.

I personally do not take any issue with 30fps games, especially if it was designed with that cap in mind. In some instances 30fps can even feel better than 60! Still, options are always appreciated, and so even if it is not the default, Deck Nine should have given these newer consoles the ability to go beyond 30fps – because the systems certainly are capable of it.
