Each month, Twitch offers a number of free games to subscribers of its Prime service. April’s free games include a number of classics such as Turok, among a plethora of indie experiences – all of which can be had for free to those who are currently subscribed to Twitch Prime. The free games in question are: Turok, Kathy Rain, Earthlock, Etherborn, and Lightmatter.

Kathy Rain “tells the story of a strong-willed journalism major who has to come to terms with her own troubled past as she investigates the mysterious death of her recently deceased grandfather”. Released in 2016, this point and click title received a positive reception from both critics and fans alike.

Earthlock is an adventure RPG which takes heavy inspiration from classic 3D RPGs from the 90s. With a “fresh take on turn based combat and character progression,” you must “embark on a journey to save the beautiful world of Umbra, a harsh planet that stopped spinning thousands of cycles ago”. The game received mixed reviews, due in part to its lackluster story and polish. Still, others have shown appreciation for its throwback nature, so it’s worth checking out and making your own mind up.

Etherborn is a third person puzzle platformer with an emphasis on exploration and gravity shifting mechanics. In Etherborn, “You are a voiceless being that has just been born into a world where a bodiless voice awaits your arrival. Go forth and seek your purpose.”

Lightmatter is another puzzler, but this time utilising a first person perspective. Described as a love-letter to the genre, the game requires you to “use lateral thinking to solve mind-bending puzzles with lights, shadows, beams, platforms, and lightmatter.”

The final game available for free is Turok. This first person 3D exploration shooter first released in 1997, and quickly became a cult classic. Originally released for the N64, this version boasts “a new visual engine and exciting new features to sink your teeth into!” If you missed this title back when it first came out, you now have a chance to delve into the history of 3D gaming for the low price of free.

All these titles are currently available to Twitch Prime subscribers. Come May, you will no longer be able to add these games to your library – though if you ‘purchased’ it beforehand, then you’ll keep the games forever, even after your subscription elapses.

As much as the original Turok: Dinosaur Hunter on the N64 is a great game, going back to it now leaves you a little disappointed at the effect your rose tinted glasses have had. The draw distance in particular is horrific, leaving you staring at blue fog for half of your time in the game. Not so in the Night Dive Studios remastering of it though, as the new trailer has shown a big improvement to the game's draw distance.

Other new features include cleaned up textures, using what we're told is a “new engine,” (as per Eurogamer) and sun rays, among other visual tweaks. The game was remade using the original PC version as a base, but will feature all of the action you remember from the original release.

The developer behind this remastering, Night Dive Studios, is also currently working on a remastering of the original System Shock, as well as licensing out a third entry in the series to Otherside Entertainment. Night Dive is also expected to release a remastered version of Turok 2: Seeds of Evil.

But that's in the future. For now we have the original Turok to play, as it's set for (re) release on the 17th December on PC. It will be available on GoG, Steam and Humble Bundle.

KitGuru Says: Some fans have said they don't like the look of the remastering however. They remember the ever-present fog as a source of tension, as enemies could appear out of nowhere and be in close range before you know it; a little like Silent Hill's fog. Do you think improving draw distance will change the experience with Turok?

Late '90s classic shooter Turok: Dinosaur Hunter may be getting an official re-release on the PC of all places, if a rumour is to be believed. This one comes from developer Samuel “Kaiser” Villarreal who has been working on a remake of unrelated '90s FPS, PowerSlave. When asked if he would extend his remakabilities to other games, he mentioned that one he certainly couldn't work on was Turok, as someone else beat him to it.

This question and answering came about in an interview with Tech Raptor, where he admitted that he had at one point been thinking of bringing back the N64 version of Turok, called Turok EX, but due to someone else's interest he ultimately had to put that project to bed.

Hello polygons. It's been a while.

“I was originally working on remaking N64 Turok (called Turok EX) but it got put off to the side. Since now Night Dive Studios has picked up the rights to re-release it, Turok EX will resume development later this year.”

Night Dive Studios is the same company that made the well liked remake of System Shock 2, as well as a number of other titles since, like F-19 Stealth Fighter and I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream. It hasn't said much that would suggest it was indeed working on a Turok remake, though has Eurogamer points out, it did retweet a mention of the rumour, so it could well be that before long Turok will be making a return.

KitGuru Says: Then we need Turok 2. It's been too long since we've all enjoyed pumping brains all over the floor with the Cerebral Bore.
