TCL recently unveiled various new display panels at DTC 2023 in Wuhan, China. From OLEDs to LCDs, the Chinese company showed what's coming to TVs, monitors, and smartphones in the next few years. The highlight is probably the dome-shaped 31-inch OLED panel.

As noted by ITHome, this 31-inch gaming display boasts a 4K resolution and operates at a 120Hz refresh rate, offering gamers a unique 3D-like experience. Typically used in larger-scale professional simulators, the dome-shaped display finds a perfect balance for a 4K monitor to be used at home, and its pixel density makes it arguably the optimal size for a 4K monitor.

TCL also showcased other OLED advancements at DTC 2023, including a 65-inch 8K curved (1800R) OLED panel and the world's first 14″ 2.8K IJP hybrid OLED for notebooks. Moving away from OLEDs, the company also showed the world's first 27-inch 8K panel with a 120Hz refresh rate that can change between 2D and 3D modes. Those interested in a dual 4K monitor setup may consider monitors with TCL's upcoming 57-inch curved (1000R) panel, which features Mini-LED technology (over 11,000 dimming zones), a 240Hz refresh rate, and a 1ms response time.

The company also revealed an 85-inch WHVA panel with a 144Hz refresh rate capable of covering 90% of the BT2020 colour gamut, the world's first 150″ MLCD zero seam display, and the world's first 2.1″ real RGB LTPO-VR LCD with a 1727 PPI (pixels per inch). Lastly, TCL showcased the world's first 6.9-inch ultra-flat UFG folding screen. It's worth noting that these advancements are limited to the panels only, and other companies may or may not incorporate them into their products.

The Fallout TV show has looked good so far in set photos, with the production team appearing to do everything it can to capture Fallout's war-torn wasteland aesthetic. After years in development and over a year on since filming began, we now know when we'll get to see the show for ourselves.

The Fallout TV series is being produced for Amazon. On a new Twitter account set up to advertise the show, we get confirmation that the show will finally become available on the 12th of April.

Interestingly, the teaser also confirms that the first episode will be titled “The End”, indicating we'll see the moments leading up to the nuclear war that forces humanity into underground vaults.

That is all we have for now but with the show now roughly six months away, we should get more information soon, including a proper trailer.

KitGuru Says: With Fallout having so much lore, and the games being RPGs with multiple outcomes for stories, there is plenty of wiggle room here for the writers. I do hope that the vaults become a core focus of the show, as they've always been my favourite part of exploring the games. Will you be tuning into this when it goes live?

While the feature has been available since as far back as the PlayStation Vita, Sony has in recent years put an increasing amount of emphasis on its Remote Play game streaming service. As part of a new update, Android TVs running version 12 and those with a Chromecast 4K will be able to stream games directly to their TV, making the feature much more useful.

Announced as part of the most recent PlayStation 5 system software update, Hideaki Nishino – the Senior Vice President for Platform Experience at SIE – said:

“PS Remote Play allows you to stream games from your PS5 or PS4 console to another device – including smartphones and tablets (iOS and Android), PCs and Mac – over the internet or through your home network. This provides you with more options to enjoy your favorite games even when you’re away from the living room. Starting today, the PS Remote Play app will be available on devices running Android TV OS 12.”

Currently, the only devices which have been verified to work include the Chromecast with Google TV (4K model) and Sony’s own BRAVIA XR A95L model – though support will be expanded over time.

Unlike Xbox Game Pass’ streaming, Remote Play relies on the power of your console in order to stream the games – making for a slightly less practical experience. That said, this new expansion of Remote Play will be beneficial to those who have multiple TVs in their home and prefer to game on a large screen device. It will be interesting to see how Remote Play continues to evolve over time.

Since the addition of mobile games to Netflix in 2021, the company's aim has been to provide games for everyone on any device – including televisions and desktops. Up until now, Netflix Games was only accessible on mobile platforms, but the range of supported devices will soon grow considerably as Netflix launches the Netflix Cloud Gaming Beta app for TVs, PCs, and Macs.

Netflix has begun to roll out a restricted beta test to a small number of subscribers in Canada and the UK on selected TVs. The PC and Mac beta testing will be accessible via Netflix.com on compatible browsers in the coming weeks.

This first test will include Oxenfree and Molehew's Mining Adventure. To play the games, the idea is to use your phone as a controller. Alternately, those using PCs and Macs may use a keyboard and mouse to play on Netflix.com.

The main purpose of this restricted beta is to test the game streaming technology behind the service and how phones work as controllers. The first devices supporting the Netflix Cloud Gaming Beta app include Amazon Fire TV Streaming Media Players, Chromecast with Google TV, LG TVs, Nvidia Shield TV, Roku devices and TVs, Samsung Smart TVs, and Walmart ONN. More gadgets will be added in the future.

Back in 2015, Samsung chose to stop making OLED TVs, instead opting to work on alternative technologies, like QLED. However, OLED has only grown in popularity amongst consumers, giving LG a nice advantage in the display market. Now, Samsung has reportedly signed a deal to start buying OLED panels from LG.

In a recent report, Reuters claims that Samsung has signed a deal to buy LG TV panels. These will be high-end panels to start off with, so don't expect Samsung to roll out a full lineup of OLED TVs, but the company should soon offer a few high-end options using LG panels.

This is the first time Samsung has purchased OLED panels from LG, its closest rival. Samsung reportedly bought as many as two million OLED panels for future TVs in 2024. In 2025, that number will jump to three million OLED panels and then in 2026, it will jump up again to five million.

As pointed out by The Verge, Samsung has been looking to get back into the OLED TV market for a little while now and is also working on spinning up its own supply. Currently, Samsung supplies OLED panels for Sony's 2022 QD-OLED TV. At this point in time though, Samsung Display is pretty far behind, with LG taking up 50 percent of the OLED TV market, and Sony coming in behind it with a 26 percent share. Samsung's OLED TV market share is currently in the single digits.

KitGuru Says: Samsung has made plenty of nice TVs over the years but ultimately, the quality of OLED has won out over LCD solutions and issues like burn-in are far less pervasive nowadays. In the years ahead, it looks like we'll start to see more Samsung OLED TVs once again.

We have seen the video games industry as a whole expand to other mediums, with many publishers handing their IPs off to be adapted into films, TV and more. Sony is one of the biggest players in this space currently, having already released a number of successful adaptations. In the latest announcement, a Warner Bros executive is now joining Bungie to help create films and shows based in the Destiny universe.

As reported by TheGamePost, Gabriel VanHuss – a former Warner Bros. Discovery executive – took to LinkedIn to announce his new position at Bungie, saying “I recently took the gig as Head of Linear Media for the Destiny franchise at Bungie. This new position will work with the Destiny Universe Leadership team to create strategy and execute the operations for expansion of Destiny into new media, including TV, films, books, comics, and audio formats.”

VanHuss continued, “Destiny has a universe worth of stories waiting to be told, and I look forward to connecting best-in-class partners to our amazing creative team to bring them to life for current and new fans. Eyes up, guardian!”

We first reported on this position back in April of last year and so it is exciting to see there now being movement in this area. Destiny’s lore is rich, varied and unique. It is unfortunate that the games have been mostly unable to capture and express this lore in an enticing way. Hopefully, the expansion to other forms of media helps to flesh out the world of Destiny in a new way.

It looks like we are heading towards a new Street Fighter movie. It has been reported that Legendary Entertainment has recently acquired the film and TV rights for Capcom's classic fighting game.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary Entertainment nabbed the rights and will now work with Capcom on future adaptations. However, no further details are available at this time, so we don't know if the plan is to produce a film and a TV show, or just one of those two options. No script writers, showrunners, directors or casting decisions have been revealed either.

There have been other live-action film adaptations of Street Fighter in the past. The original Street Fighter film released in 1994, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. The movie was not well received critically or commercially. In 2009, another attempt was made with Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, which also didn't do particularly well.

Street Fighter itself is a well-known fighting game series, which began life in arcades before transitioning to home consoles. The next major game in the series, Street Fighter 6, is due to release later this year.

We typically see new TVs announced and revealed at CES each year, but Displace is bringing something unique to the table with its first product. The recently founded US-based TV maker is working on the first “truly wireless” display, and it'll pack Nvidia and AMD hardware under the hood.

As first reported by FlatPanelsHD, the 55-inch 4K OLED TV developed by Displace will use a swappable battery system (four rechargeable batteries) created by Displace. Each fully charged battery lasts a month if used 6 hours a day. Weighing around 9KG, the TV won't feature any ports or wires, making the “world's first truly wireless TV”.

To control the Displace TV, users can use hand gestures captured by the built-in camera (which can be turned off), touch controls or voice. With the TV comes a wireless unit offering Wi-Fi 6E connectivity that needs to be connected to an electrical outlet. Inside this unit, there's an undisclosed AMD CPU and Nvidia GPU, a considerable upgrade over the typical ARM-based MediaTek SoCs in most modern TVs. The TV OS wasn't specified.

The TV itself measures in at 55 inches, and Displace does not currently have plans for larger or smaller versions. We'll learn more official details about this TV at CES next month.

We seem to have entered a new age for adaptations of video game franchises. From Uncharted to The Last of Us to Sonic and even indies such as Little Nightmares, all manner of IP are being translated into film and TV form. One of the most high profile shows is the Fallout adaptation by Amazon – filming for which has now officially started.

Walton Goggins, one of the leads in the upcoming Fallout TV show took to Instagram to reveal that filming had officially begun, saying “Day 1… FALLOUT… for Amazon. Deep breath…. Exhale… Let's see where this road goes want too (sic). #fallout #theghoul

Though it has yet to be confirmed, the post seems to suggest that Goggins will be playing a Ghoul, and considering the fact that they are already confirmed to be one of the leads for the show, it will be interesting to see the direction that the Fallout show takes. Ghouls have always featured prominently in the Fallout franchise, however never as a main lead, instead focusing on the human Vault dwellers.

The Fallout TV show was announced all the way back in mid-2020, with Todd Howard at the time saying “Over the last decade, we looked at many ways to bring Fallout to the screen but it was clear from the moment I first spoke with Jonah and Lisa (the show’s executive producers) a few years ago, that they and the team at [Kilter films] were the ones to do it right. We’re enormous fans of their work and couldn’t be more excited to work with them and Amazon Studios.”

With filming having only just officially started, it is safe to assume that the TV show is still a ways away from release. That being said, we may finally start to see some teasers and set pictures released – as has been the case with The Last of Us TV show.

The Fallout universe is rich with lore, history and depth, and so hopefully the TV show is able to correctly translate its thematic elements into a different medium.

Though we have yet to witness the full fruits of any of its labour, Sony has spent the past few years trying to adapt its many video game IPs into other mediums. In the wake of the Uncharted film’s release to commercial success, Sony is seemingly going all-out with its transmedia deals, officially announcing that they are working on God of War, Horizon and Gran Turismo TV shows.

During Sony Picture’s most recent business briefing, the tech giant announced that three of its most current and popular gaming franchises (God of War, Horizon and Gran Turismo) would be getting their own TV adaptations. Though light on specifics, Sony did confirm that the Horizon show would be produced by Netflix, while God of War is being handed off to Amazon.

It is currently unknown who will be producing the Gran Turismo show – though in all honesty, the concept of a Gran Tursimo show is much less defined when compared to the likes of God of War and Horizon. Will it be a documentary? A fictional show? A Drama? We will have to wait and see.

It is clear that Sony is going all in on this notion of transmedia intellectual properties. Many of Sony’s first party games are story focused affairs and so are ripe for translation into other mediums.

As mentioned, Sony finally managed to complete and release the Uncharted film after years of development hell. Making over $400 million so far however, the film was a clear success. Though Uncharted is currently the only video game property from Sony to see their debut outside of its original medium, the folks at HBO are currently hard at work on a high-budget TV translation of the critically acclaimed The Last of Us.

Additionally, rumours have persisted for years now claiming that a Twisted Metal TV show starring Anthony Mackie is in the works at Peacock. All this is to say that Sony clearly has big plans for all of its intellectual properties.

The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are two of the biggest fantasy IP in the world, garnering millions of fans across books, movies and games. It has been a while since the last major Triple A video game based on LOTR, but we should get more games in the years to come, as the gaming rights are about to be auctioned off.

As reported by Variety, Saul Zentz Co is selling its stake in all things Tolkien and as a result, IP rights are being auctioned off for movies and gaming. Auctions are reportedly scheduled to begin this week and certain properties could fetch up to $2 billion USD.

Amazon is said to be a “prime candidate” to obtain rights, so we could potentially be heading towards a future where Amazon Prime Video is the new home for Lord of the Rings. Amazon already has the TV rights and will be releasing a TV series in the coming months, so the company could look to add movies and games to that roster. However, given Amazon's recent struggles with video game development, it is also possible that they leave the gaming rights for another company to pick up.

There are currently two Lord of the Rings games that we know of in active development, the long-running MMO, The Lord of the Rings Online, as well as Daedalic Entertainment's Gollum.

KitGuru Says: With auctions currently taking place, we should have an update on this later this month as gaming and media companies put their bids in.

Many fans were left surprised at the revelation that despite acquiring Bungie for $3.6 Billion, Sony has no intentions of making any of their games exclusive to PlayStation. That being said, Bungie’s IPs will be used by Sony in a different way: Films and TV.

During the company’s recent earnings call Q&A, (as transcribed by IGN) Sony’s Hiroki Totoki was asked about the benefits to acquiring Bungie considering the Halo and Destiny creator will continue to self-publish games. In response, Totoki said:

“[It's] not just for [the] gaming area, but the multi-using of IP and merchandising of IP – like a game title maybe put into movies.”

Totoki continued, “Bungie want to nurture the IP they have in a multi-dimensional manner, and that's their hope. For that, we believe we can help that – we have [Sony] Pictures and [Sony] Music, and Bungie can leverage our platform so that their IP can flourish and grow big.”

With consumers becoming more and more weary of these constant acquisition wars, it is encouraging to see Sony choosing to not play into it in the way that many expected. As mentioned, Sony does have its fingers in many pies, and Bungie’s IPs are ripe for translation into different forms of media.

The world of Destiny has a great deal of lore, history and thought put behind the development of this universe. While much of this is presented only in writing within the games, hopefully Sony’s acquisition of Bungie leads to the eventual development of a Mandalorian-styled TV show or film.

After years of development hell, the live-action Halo TV series is finally on the way thanks to a partnership between Microsoft, Showtime and Paramount. The series is set to debut in just under two months time and now, we have our first full trailer.

The Halo TV series trailer aired last night during the NFL's AFC championship game. The trailer itself is pretty packed, coming in at over two minutes long and showcasing the Master Chief, Cortana, The Covenant, various weapons and more:

The trailer makes it clear that the series will pick up right as the war with the Covenant begins, but we also see some other storylines teased, such as the dark origin story for Spartan soldiers.

The Halo TV series takes place in its own alternate timeline, so it technically isn't canon. With that in mind, we expect to see some changes between the games and books and what is shown in the series. Halo will debut over in the US on the 24th of March via Paramount Plus – there is no official streaming partner announced for outside the US yet, nor has the show been licensed to a TV network like Sky. As always though, people will find a way to watch in lieu of official alternatives.

KitGuru Says: This has been a long time coming. So far, I like what I'm seeing from the trailer in terms of production quality, although I must admit it is odd to hear Master Chief voiced by someone new. What did you all think of the Halo trailer? Will you be watching this when it premiers?

LG is partnering up with Nvidia to offer six months of GeForce Now Priority membership for anyone that buys a 2021 4K Smart TV. This promotion comes right after the streaming app exits the beta phase in many of the markets where LG operates.

This promotion will only be available in selected countries from February 1 to March 20 and will require customers to install the app on their new TVs. Usually, a six-month priority membership costs about £44.99/$49.99, allowing you to play games at 1080p and up to 60FPS.

Even if you don't own any game, you can still play any free-to-play game supported by GeForce Now, including Rocket League and Destiny 2. Other available titles include Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy and Crysis Remastered Trilogy, to name a few.

The LG 2021 4K Smart TV models that support GeForce Now include OLED TVs such as the G1, C1, B1, A,1, and the QNED Mini LED TV QNED90 and QNED85. In addition, NanoCell TVs like the NANO90, NANO85, NANO80, NANO77, NANO75 and the UHD TV UP80, UP77, UP75 can also run the streaming app.

At the moment, there are not many small OLED TVs nor OLED monitors, but that may soon change. According to reports, both LG and Samsung are planning to launch smaller OLED panels in 2022, which should lead to an influx in OLED gaming monitors.

According to TFT Central (LG) and FlatpanelsHD (Samsung), via TechPowerUp, both manufacturers are reportedly launching smaller OLED panels, bringing sizes down to 34-inches. While LG will continue to focus on supplying TV makers, Samsung's smaller OLED panels should come to monitors.

LG will apparently feature 42-inch OLED TVs in its C Series, creating a new entry point, as currently, the smallest LG C Series TV is 48-inches. The 42-inch model is expected to be slightly cheaper than the current 48-inch model and should be showcased during CES 2022. No specifications have yet been confirmed, but it would be nice to see it feature HDMI 2.1, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and Adaptive Sync technology.

As for Samsung, it's reportedly developing new 55 and 65-inch QD-OLED TVs, as well as a 34-inch QD-OLED (QD=Quantum Dot) monitor. These displays are reportedly being mass-produced, but besides that, we don't know anything about them. We expect to learn more about Samsung's upcoming displays at CES 2022.

KitGuru says: A 42-inch LG OLED as a monitor doesn't seem too far-fetched, but the Samsung 34-inch QD-OLED monitor might be the best for most users. Which one would you prefer for your setup?

Nvidia has been working closely with LG for a little while now, having implemented G-Sync compatibility with the company's OLED TVs some time ago. Now, the partnership is extending to GeForce Now, making Nvidia's game streaming service available across a range of LG smart TVs.

The GeForce Now app is coming to LG TVs this week and will support selected OLED TVs from the company's 2021 range. Support for older TVs has not been announced at this time, nor has the app been announced for other Smart TV brands like Samsung, Sony, Panasonic etc.

This move comes just ahead of GeForce Now's biggest performance boost to date. Nvidia has introduced a new RTX 3080 Tier to the service, allowing for 1440p streaming at 120Hz, support for RTX features like ray-tracing and DLSS, and of course, the graphics power of an RTX 3080.

To get the most out of the RTX 3080 tier though, you will need a strong internet connection and preferably an ethernet connection rather than WiFi. Anyone that does upgrade to the RTX 3080 tier soon will also get a free code for Crysis Remastered on the Epic Games Store, which can be played natively on a PC, as well as through GFN.

Microsoft officially dropped Kinect shortly after the Xbox One launch, but the company may have now found a new use for the technology. In a partnership with Sky, Microsoft is essentially bringing the Kinect back for a new wave of TVs.

This week, Sky announced Sky Glass, a new range of TVs built for streaming live TV, rather than relying on satellite dishes. The Sky Glass TV comes with the Sky Glass Camera, which is most definitely a Kinect under a different name.

The Sky Glass Camera is a 4K camera that includes motion controls and gesture support, and it works across games, TV and sharing features. Sky also revealed that it has been working with Microsoft on the software too, with one of the key features being a method to sync your TV with another person in another household, making virtual watch parties easier.

As you would expect, various voice commands are also supported. In many ways, this appears to be a complete revival of Microsoft's smart living-room attempts back in 2013, although now it is being handled by a TV company, and not a gaming company.

KitGuru Says: Microsoft had some interesting ideas for the Kinect, but it didn't belong on a games console. Now with the tech being reworked into the Sky Glass Camera, perhaps it will finally find success.

The post New update makes Sony TVs the best way to play PS5 games first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
While Sony’s PlayStation brand may be one of its biggest, the tech giant has a long and successful history making all manner of media devices. One of the biggest names in TVs is BRAVIA, and Sony is now making its TV’s the best way to experience PS5 games.

In a press release, Sony has announced its ’Perfect for PlayStation 5’ campaign, which introduces a number of exclusive features to its BRAVIA TVs – allowing owners to take as much advantage of Sony’s latest consoles as possible.

Two of the biggest features announced are “Auto HDR Tone Mapping and Auto Genre Picture Mode”. Auto HDR Tone Mapping allows you to skip the arduous task of calibrating your TV set for HDR content, allowing you to plug in and play with assurance that you are getting the best picture possible. According to Sony “The PS5 will automatically recognise individual BRAVIA TV models and select the best HDR settings for the TV accordingly. With the optimised HDR tone mapping level to your BRAVIA display specification, you’ll see crucial details and colours even in high contrast scenes.”

The second major feature is Auto Genre Picture Mode in which “your TV automatically switches into Game Mode when gaming, which minimises input lag to make the action more responsive, or to Standard Mode when watching movies via a streaming service or from an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc on the PS5, which shifts focus to picture processing for a more expressive picture.”

While these features are available on most modern TV sets, owners will often need to calibrate and switch these settings manually – a process which can be long and frustrating. The ability to be able to plug and play, knowing you have the best picture quality that the TV can provide should make for a seamless and convenient experience – something which the current generation of systems have been focusing heavily on.

Sony have a wide range of technologies and yet they have historically failed to utilise the range of devices in a way that makes them work well together. It is therefore encouraging to see them starting to do this. Hopefully other Sony devices are next in line to receive the synergetic treatment. Being able to connect a pair of Sony headphones or soundbar to the PS5 and getting immediate calibration would be highly useful. The future of technolgy looks to be that of the ecosystem, and until now, Sony has not taken advantage of that. It is good at least to see them just now beginning to do so.

KitGuru says: What TV do you own? Would this affect your purchasing decision? What is the greatest convenience brought about by the new generation of consoles? Let us know down below.

Microsoft has been betting big on Xbox Game Pass. With this subscription service, it appears as though Microsoft is trying to make playing Xbox games as accessible as possible. Following the functionality allowing for Game Pass titles to be streamed onto mobile devices, Microsoft has now confirmed that it is working on not only an Xbox TV app, but also a dedicated xCloud streaming stick.

As reported by The Verge, Microsoft has officially announced its Xbox TV app and xCloud streaming stick. Previously hinted at, the console manufacturer has now announced that “We’re working with global TV manufacturers to embed the Game Pass experience directly into internet-connected TVs so all you’ll need to play is a controller.”

Furthermore, Microsoft is “also developing standalone streaming devices that you can plug into a TV or monitor, so if you have a strong internet connection, you can stream your Xbox experience.”

Both of these additions should help in expanding the Xbox line-up of games and experiences to a much wider audience. While the PS4 greatly outsold the Xbox One, and the PS5 is looking to likewise have an early head start, Microsoft is no longer relying on console sales, and these two services are proof of that. Hopefully we will get a release date for both of these soon enough.

The chip shortage is really causing quite the stir in the electronics industry. Besides GPUs and cars, display panels are also severely affected by the ongoing chip shortage and could end up halting their production. According to Samsung, while this year's supply is under control, 2022 could see a turn for the worse.

As reported by Pulse, Han Jong-hee, head of visual display business at Samsung Electronics, said that “the industry in general is facing a severe supply shortage”. If the shortage continues, Samsung “may not be able to produce TVs.” Han then added that Samsung is doing all it can to prevent that from happening.

As it seems, Samsung has this year's production under control. As for the next year, we will have to wait to see it. Sources claim that Han has visited Taiwan to meet with MediaTek and Novatek, two local chipmakers that produce driver ICs. The reason for the meeting hasn't been disclosed, but considering Samsung's situation, it could well be to produce chips for the company, preventing issues in TV production during 2022.

On a more positive note, Han also talked about Samsung's next-generation of Micro LED TVs, stating that the 146-inch Micro LED production line is in full swing. Samsung also plans to create more production lines to handle the manufacturing of 110-inch and 70 to 80-inch TVs.

Both Google Stadia and Nvidia’s GeForce Now allow those with a strong internet connection to stream games to a multitude – though still somewhat limited – number of devices. The number of compatible machines which can use these services will soon expand however, as LG has promised that both Google Stadia and GeForce Now will be coming to its lineup of smart TVs.

Announced during its 2021 CES press conference, LG revealed that its LG smart TVs would soon receive Google Stadia and Nvidia GeForce Now apps, allowing those with an LG TV to use either service with no further equipment required. Prior to this, LG TV owners would have to purchase a Chromecast Ultra or an Nvidia Shield, due to LGs use of WebOS on its lineup of smart TVs.

Though no exact date was given, LG did reveal that these apps would arrive sometime in the second half of 2021. Furthermore, while these apps will definitely come to its recently announced 2021 TV lineup, there is currently no word on whether older devices will also receive the apps.

Historically, smart TVs are some of the worst offenders when it comes to poor post-launch software support. Fortunately, in recent years TV manufacturers have made a concerted effort to increase its post-launch support. Here’s to hoping that the Stadia and GeForce Now apps will be made available to all devices which are capable of running them.

Late last year, Apple launched its Apple TV+ video streaming service, which saw the iPhone manufacturer join the likes of Netflix and Amazon in creating and distributing original programming to its subscribers. Over the course of the past year, the Apple TV app has slowly been making its way to more devices. Now, almost 1 year later, Apple TV is set to come to PlayStation and Xbox.

Reported by Windows Central, a number of Xbox users have seen the app made available to their consoles, though not yet currently downloadable. Though not officially announced, it is expected that the Apple TV app will release alongside the Xbox Series X and S in November – just after Apple TV+’s first anniversary.

Following this discovery, 9to5mac reported that “Apple is also working with Sony to bring the Apple TV app to PlayStation consoles”. More interesting however is the fact that the Apple TV app will seemingly do more than just offer its TV+ video service.

According to 9to5mac, “Our anonymous source also believes HomeKit support could arrive at some point but that feature may not launch at the same time as the Apple TV app.”

Though Apple has historically kept its services tied to its own devices, the Cupertino-based company’s increasing willingness to open up its services to other platforms over the years is certainly good for consumer choice. It’ll be interesting to see whether Apple makes the announcement official at its all-but-confirmed upcoming iPhone event.

The Japanese company Sharp has revised its forecast for earnings last year, and has also reduced its expected full-year profit by 48%. It is believed that a big factor for the downturn is decreased demand as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Major shifts are happening across the worldwide market as a result of the global lockdown – smartphones are predicted to see a historical decline in production, while tablets shipments are expected to grow 45% in Q2 2020. Other products have also seen shortages, including Nintendo Switch and notebooks.

Now, Sharp – which is mainly known for manufacturing displays and camera sensors – has reduced its predicted full-year profit margin by half. The Japanese company expects that its full-year profit will come in at 52 billion yen/£395 million, which is down from its previous forecast of 100 billion yen/£760 million.

The company's net profit has also been hit hard, landing at 20 billion yen/£152 million – 75% less than the previous forecast of 80 billion yen/£608 million. Sharp says that the COVID-19 outbreak has had a big impact across its business resulting in the noticeable decline.

KitGuru says: This news comes as a big blow to Sharp – do you own any Sharp products?

CES 2020 is just under a week away now and news of what’s to come at the event in Las Vegas is filtering through thick and fast. TCL will be at the big electronics event and showcasing its next-generation Mini-LED technology.

TCL is set to unveil its next-generation Mini-LED technology next week at CES as well as a showing off a full complement of the company’s new flagship innovations. Thanks to its advanced TV solutions, TCL is becoming one of the fastest-growing consumer electronics brands and was one of the world’s first manufacturers to utilise Mini-LED backlight technology in televisions earlier this year.

The company is aiming to drive Mini-LED TV advancements with Quantum Contrast technology, a new standard for picture quality in televisions. Quantum Contrast uses tens of thousands of Mini-LEDs to power its premium range of televisions to produce a display that delivers unrivalled contrast with amazing clarity.

“TCL is thrilled to be at tech's biggest show and stand on tech's grandest stage to share our latest Mini-LED developments alongside our vision for the industry in the AI and IoT age,” said Kevin Wang, CEO of TCL Industrial Holdings and TCL Electronics. “TCL is committed to offering a wider range of products to satisfy the needs of consumers and provide them with better, more personalized experiences.”

The company is planning to raise the bar in 2020 when it comes to Mini-LED powered televisions and will unveil its plans for the next generation of Mini-LED performance at its press conference on 6th January at CES. TCL will also stream its CES announcements through the company’s social media platforms so even if you can’t make the event, you won’t miss out on the news.

TCL is aiming to be a big player in this area with its next-generation Mini-LED technology. Will you guys be watching the TCL conference stream or checking them out live at the show in Vegas?

Back in September 2018, OnePlus announced plans to break into the TV market, broadening the company's reach beyond smartphones. Earlier this year, new details about the screen were released and now this week, the OnePlus TV has been officially announced- featuring 4K UHD resolution, HDR and Android TV baked in.

At a launch event earlier this week, OnePlus co-founder, Pete Lau, said the aim here is to bring smartphones and televisions closer together. This is achieved via support for multiple digital assistants and the OnePlus Connect app, which allows a smartphone to be linked to the TV to play content, adjust volume and access other useful controls.

The TV itself is a 55-inch 4K (UHD) QLED TV with ultra-slim bezels and support for HDR 10+ and Dolby Vision. There is a speaker module that slides down from the back of the TV and hangs underneath the screen so that audio isn't obstructed.

The speaker seems to be pretty solid too, particularly compared to most built-in TV speakers. This is an eight-speaker system with two rear-facing subs, four front-facing full range speakers and two tweeters. All of this was developed with Dolby Surround in mind and also allows for Dolby ATMOS support.

The OnePlus 55 Q1 Pro is powered by an Android operating system, meaning that you will have access to a whole load of applications and services at your fingertips. Another feature of the 55 Q1 Pro is a voice activation capable remote that has a multi-directional button and a shortcut to Amazon prime video.

Included with the OnePlus TV is support for both Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa for voice commands. Other features include Oxygen Play, which is OnePlus' own platform and will be supported with updates for at least three years. OnePlus Connect can also be used to turn your smartphone into a remote with full control over navigating the TV's menus. This feature will also automatically lower TV volume if a phone call comes through.

We expect the OnePlus 55 Q1 Pro to cost around £1100 but currently, there is no official word on availability outside of India, so we will have to wait and see if OnePlus is preparing to release this TV over here in the UK.

KitGuru says: The OnePlus 55 Q1 Pro has some really interesting and unique features, but would this be enough to tempt you away from the more popular TV brands?

The entertainment industry is still catching on to 4K/HDR content production, but the tech industry is keen to get the 8K wave started already. There have been a few very expensive and very early 8K TVs released in the wild to date and from January 2020 onward, there will be a specific standard in place that display makers will have to adhere to.

The Consumer Technology Association and its member companies announced this week that the official standard for 8K Ultra HD has now been set and as you would expect, there is a new logo to go along with it:

The key attributes that all 8K TVs must adhere to include a display resolution of at least 7680×4320 within a 16:9 window and one or more HDMI inputs capable of supporting that resolution with a bit depth of 10-bits at 24, 30 and 60 frames per second. Each 8K display will also need to have HDR transfer functions and colorimetry as specified by ITU-R BT.2100.

Finally, 8K TVs will need to be capable of upscaling standard definition, HD and 4K UHD content to 8K. The logo will be available for TV makers to start using in January 2020, so we can expect to see a rise in the number of 8K TVs being pushed out and marketed.

KitGuru Says: I am still perfectly happy with 4K for now, especially as someone who plays a lot of games and couldn’t hope to run them at an 8K native resolution. Still, the wheels are turning and soon, we will be seeing 8K being pushed by the industry.

Apple event confirmed this month, TV streaming service rumoured to be announced https://www.kitguru.net/lifestyle/mobile/apple/matthew-wilson/apple-event-confirmed-this-month-tv-streaming-service-rumoured-to-be-announced/ https://www.kitguru.net/lifestyle/mobile/apple/matthew-wilson/apple-event-confirmed-this-month-tv-streaming-service-rumoured-to-be-announced/#respond Tue, 12 Mar 2019 10:51:01 +0000 https://www.kitguru.net/?p=406444 It looks like Apple will reveal its Netflix competitor later this month.

The post Apple event confirmed this month, TV streaming service rumoured to be announced first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
We've known that Apple is working on its own streaming service for a few years now. The company has been in on-going talks with various networks, put up money to produce original content and now, it looks like Apple's Netflix competitor is finally ready, with an announcement event scheduled for later this month.

Apple has begun sending out invitations for an event at the Steve Jobs Theatre on the 25th of March. The invitation comes with the tag line ‘It's Show time', the same tagline that was used back when the first-generation Apple TV was announced in 2006.

Apple's TV streaming service is rumoured to launch this Spring, following an announcement this month. It looks like Apple is looking to get its own service up and running before Disney swoops in late 2019 with Disney+, which will be the new home for Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar and other Disney properties.

There are other product announcements that we could potentially see this month, including a new generation of AirPods, a new entry-level iPad and potentially Apple's long awaited AirPower wireless charger.

KitGuru Says: Apple's streaming service has been in the works for a long time now, although there is a lot more competition now compared to four years ago. It will be interesting to see what the lineup of shows/movies is like.
