As part of a multi-media franchise revival, Sony had been pushing to see the return of the classic PlayStation destruction derby series Twisted Metal. Last year’s Peacock-distributed live-action adaptation was well-received, with a 2nd season confirmed to be on its way. Unfortunately, it seems as though the long-in-development Twisted Metal video game has now been cancelled.

As reported by Jason Schreier via Bloomberg, as part of the recently-announced Sony lay-offs, the long-rumoured Twisted Metal video game has been cancelled; claiming that “Despite some recent scuttlebutt suggesting that Twisted Metal was close to release, the game was in early development and wasn't yet greenlit.”

For the uninitiated, back in September 2021 it was reported that the Liverpool-based Lucid Studio was working on a revival of the Twisted Metal franchise – having previously released the similarly-styled Destruction All-stars.

Cut to January 2022 and Lucid Games were said to have been taken off the project, with Firesprite now being tasked with its creation. Unfortunately, it would appear as though they too are no longer working on Twisted Metal.

What this means for the future of the franchise is unknown. As mentioned, the live-action adaptation was surprisingly well received, with a 2nd season announced late last year. We speculated at the time that the premiere of the second season could line up with the release of this Twisted Metal title. Evidently this is no longer the case – begging the question as to whether Twisted Metal will ever return in game form.

As part of Sony’s pivot to adapting its many original video game IPs into other mediums, we have seen the likes of HBO’s The Last of Us, an Uncharted film, and the Gran Turismo movie come to fruition. Despite these massive properties, perhaps the most surprising success comes from Peacock’s Twisted Metal TV show. After becoming the service’s most binged comedy to date, it has now been confirmed that a second season is in the works.

Taking to the stage to announce The Game Award for ‘best ongoing game’ Twisted Metal star Anthony Mackie also revealed that the show is coming back for a second season, saying:

“Because of our incredible fans, Twisted Metal is coming back for season two on Peacock – so everybody get your motor revving cuz you’re going on another ride with John Doe.”

Following a less-than-promising marketing reveal, Twisted Metal went on to become a sleeper hit of video game adaptations following its launch on the 27th of July – seeing an impressive audience score of 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.

With Twisted Metal having now justified itself among the many increasing number of video game adaptations, it will be interesting to see where the show ends up going for season 2.

As part of Sony’s pivot to adapting its many original video game IPs into other mediums, we have seen the likes of HBO’s The Last of Us, an Uncharted film, and the recently-released Gran Turismo movie come to fruition. While these projects have had varying levels of success, one adaptation which almost no one expected to do well was the Peacock Original Twisted Metal show. Surprisingly, not only has it resonated with fans, but has broken records for the streaming service.

As reported by Deadline, two weeks on from the show’s premiere on the 27th of July, the high-octane action comedy Twisted Metal has become streaming service Peacock’s “most binged” comedy to date.

Going into more details, NBCUniversal claimed that on average, viewers have watched 3 episodes back to back in a single viewing – with many even tackling the 10 episode season in one go. Of course, being 30-minutes in length, binging the entire show in one go isn’t too tough of a task, but it does indicate that viewers enjoyed what they watched and wanted more of it.

Considering the low expectations that many had for this show (especially in the wake of the less-than-stellar trailers) it is encouraging to see that Twisted Metal has found itself an audience – with a current Rotten Tomato audience score of 94%. Not bad for a franchise which hasn’t had a new entry in over a decade.

All the way back in Spring of 2019 it was announced that a live-action show based on the PlayStation franchise Twisted Metal was in production. Following the release of a brief clip last month, we have now gotten our first proper look at Peacock’s Twisted Metal.

Available to stream from the 27th of July, Twisted Metal is described as “a high-octane action comedy…about a motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a badass axe-wielding car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck.”

The trailer does not take itself too seriously and seems to be a rather fun time. Whether the show ultimately ends up being PlayStation Productions’ next big hit, we will have to wait and see. Based on the trailer however it seems as though it will at the very least be entertaining.

All the way back in Spring of 2019 it was announced that a live-action show based on the PlayStation franchise Twisted Metal was in production. Since then, we have seen very little from it, but with Twisted Metal set to release in 3 months time we have finally gotten our first proper look at the show thanks to the release of an official poster.

As shared by IGN, the poster for PlayStation Production’s Twisted Metal show has officially been released, showing lead actor Anthony Mackie behind the wheel of a gun-toting vehicle. The plot for the Twisted Metal show is as follows:

“Twisted Metal is a high-octane action comedy, based on an original take by Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick about a motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he'll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck.”

While Mackie features front and centre in the poster, the show itself will include a wide cast of characters played by revered actors such as Stephanie Beatriz and Will Arnett to name a few.

With the repertoire of both the cast and crew, Twisted Metal looks set up to be a fun and bombastic 10 episode series which hopefully will not take itself too seriously. Twisted Metal premieres on the 27th of July exclusively on Peacock.

Though not officially confirmed, it has long been rumoured that a Twisted Metal game is currently in development at Firesprite. With the PlayStation VR2 roughly one week away from launch, it is encouraging to hear that the destruction derby title might be compatible with PSVR2 – as is the case with Gran Turismo 7.

As discovered by ResetEra user ‘Smitch’ the Liverpool-based Firesprite is a first-party PlayStation developer currently working on an unannounced ‘multiplayer action game’ – though leaks and rumours claim it to be part of the Twisted Metal franchise.

Regardless of what exactly the game is, it seems as though the title will offer some form of VR support, with the studio stating (as part of a new job listing) that “Experience developing gameplay for VR would be useful.”

How deep the VR integration will go is currently unknown, but one can hope that it is comparable to Gran Turismo 7’s upcoming VR update – which looks to be rather comprehensive.

Though offering no names on the IP in development, Firesprite did provide some additional information on what the game will be, saying “This bold project aims to break new ground, blending genre transcending gameplay mechanics around vehicular and on foot combat and deeply embedding them into a unique gameplay environment as part of a unique and vibrant universe.”

Early reviews for the PlayStation VR2 have been coming out, and everyone seems quite impressed with the hardware. Hopefully the headset has the software to match it – though it looks like Sony is certainly trying in this regard.

Adapting video games into other mediums is seemingly one of the latest practices witnessed across the whole industry, with all manner of IPs being transformed into film and TV show formats. Announced all the way back in February 2021, the Twisted Metal TV show has now finished filming.

In a post on Twitter, the writer and executive producer for the upcoming Twisted Metal series – Michael Jonathan Smith – announced “That’s a wrap on season one!” adding that “The cast and crew of Twisted Metal was something special. Even with lightning delays, extreme heat, and cars that wouldn’t do as they’re told, everyone worked as hard as they could to make sure Twisted Metal kicked as much as possible.”

He concluded by stating “The last day of shooting felt like the last day of camp, with lots of laughs, a few tears, and ice cream being handed out the back of Sweet Tooth’s truck. We all cannot wait for you to see this insane thing we spent our summer shooting. Now, to post!”

Twisted Metal was one of the earliest games announced to be getting a TV show/film by Sony, and so it will be interesting to see how the actual show turns out in the wake of this lengthy production. The Twisted Metal TV show does have some big names attached (Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz and Will Arnett to name a few) and so hopefully it all comes together nicely.

Recently we reported that Lucid Games, the studio behind 2021s neutrally-received Destruction All-Stars, would no longer be working on the upcoming Twisted Metal reboot game. Previously, all we knew of the new studio was that it was a first-party dev team. However, we now know exactly who.

In a report by VGC, Sony's recently created Firesprite studio is said to have taken over development of the upcoming Twisted Metal reboot. What is perhaps the most curious thing, however, is the fact that Lucid Games’ own studio director ‘Matt Southern’ has now moved over to Firesprite in the same role.

Even more interesting perhaps is the fact that both Firesprite Studios and Lucid Games are located a mere 15 minutes from one another In the city of Liverpool. What this means for both Twisted Metal and Lucid Games is unknown. It was originally believed that the project was moved due in part to the lukewarm reception towards Lucid Games's Destruction All-Stars –  which itself was a destruction derby game.

With team members moving from one studio to the other, however, perhaps something bigger is at play here. Though this is but mere speculation, it is entirely possible that Sony is gearing up for an acquisition of Lucid Games. While Destruction All-Stars was in no way a masterpiece, its gameplay loop; controller feel; and use of PS5-exclusive features were well implemented and so it would not be out of character for Sony to be gearing up towards acquiring the talent at Lucid Games.

Again, nothing is confirmed until announced by Sony themselves, and so the console manufacturer's short-term and long-term plans for Twisted Metal will be revealed if and when Sony wants to.

As part of a multi-media franchise revival, Sony has been pushing to see the return of the classic PlayStation destruction derby series Twisted Metal. Previously, we reported that the title was being developed by Lucid Games – however this is seemingly no longer the case.

According to VGC, Lucid Games – known most recently for creating the PS5-exclusive Destruction All-Stars – is no longer working on the Twisted Metal revival title. Those who are concerned for the game’s status need not be, as Sony is said to have since brought the project internally, with one of the console manufacturer’s European first-party studios working on the game now instead.

While no concrete details were given as to why Sony had such a change of heart, it has been suggested that the relatively poor reception towards Destruction All-Stars was a contributing factor.

This isn’t the first time that a game being created in partnership with a console manufacturer was shifted to a first party studio. The still-unreleased Metroid Prime 4 was originally being developed by Bandai Namco, however was later brought internally into Nintendo.

While it must be disappointing for Lucid Games, hopefully this move is ultimately for the betterment of the game – and that Lucid Games are given a chance to work on something else.

Timur222 has become well-known for scouring job websites looking for any new details that can be gleaned from job listings in the video games industry. As discovered by Timur222, Lucid Games – the developers behind the PS5 exclusive Destruction All-Stars – is now working on an “unannounced First-Party Flagship AAA IP for the PlayStation 5.”

According to Drew Williams-Rostron, the previous technical designer at Lucid Games, the studio is currently working on “an unannounced First-Party Flagship AAA IP for the PlayStation 5”. Little else is known about this, however it is interesting to see the studio working on a different IP considering Destruction All-Stars only released earlier this year, and was pitched as a live-service title.

Of course, Destruction All-Stars saw a less-than-stellar response from both fans and critics alike, and so it makes some sense to see the team working on other things too.

One rumour suggested that the team is working on a new game in the classic Twisted Metal franchise. This would make sense for the studio – especially in the wake of Destruction All-Stars’ reception. In spite of this, the game was solid, and so it would serve as a decent foundation with which Twisted Metal could be built upon.

With the upcoming Twisted Metal TV show on the way, it seems as though PlayStation is pushing for the franchise’s return. Hopefully Lucid Games are able to revive the long-dormant franchise.

The Twisted Metal franchise has been dormant for quite some time, although it appears as though the classic PlayStation Destruction Derby series is making a major comeback. Alongside the announcement of the Twisted Metal TV show – Starring Anthony Mackie – Lucid Studio who worked on Destruction All-Stars is reportedly making a Twisted Metal game.

As reported by VGC, the Liverpool-based Lucid Studio has been handed the [car]keys to the Twisted Metal franchise, making the first new game in over a decade. While said to be in early development, the release is intended to coincide with the 2023 launch date of the upcoming aforementioned TV show.

This Twisted Metal game will either feature free-to-play elements, or will be entirely free-to-play. This decision is said to be in response to Lucid Studio’s previous game – Destruction All-Stars – which was originally announced as a full priced game before being relegated to PlayStation Plus.

The Twisted Metal franchise felt very much like a product of its time, and so it is interesting to see Sony giving the franchise a brand new push to a whole new audience. While there are plenty of racing games, there are much fewer destruction derby games, and so it is exciting to see the return of Twisted Metal. Hopefully Lucid Studio has learned from their failings with Destruction All-Stars.

Sony recently announced its intentions to lean hard into the movie and television industry, using its many successful video game IP and translating them into different media. We have seen this with the Uncharted movie, HBO’s The Last of Us and Twisted Metal – the latter of which will officially star Anthony Mackie.

Anthony Mackie is an award-winning actor known best for his role as Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sergeant JT Sanborn in The Hurt Locker and Papa Doc in 8 Mile. His acting credits are about to get longer, as it has officially been confirmed that Mackie will be playing the lead role in Sony’s live-action Twisted Metal TV show.

As reported by Deadline, it was announced that Mackie would star as main character John Doe in this live-action adaptation of the popular PlayStation demolition derby franchise. The actor will also serve as executive producer – a role he has been getting more involved in over the past few years.

Speaking on the confirmation, Asad Qizilbash, the Head of PlayStation Productions said “We're thrilled to have Anthony Mackie on board. His ability to blend comedy, action and drama is perfect for the Twisted world we're creating.”

The plot reads as follows: “Twisted Metal is a high-octane action comedy, based on an original take by Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick about a motor-mouthed outsider offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he'll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck.”

Anthony Mackie definitely has the chops to play the leading role in a TV show, and with his increasing popularity thanks to the success of the MCU, it will be interesting to see just how well received this live-action adaptation proves to be – both commercially and critically.

The protagonist has to deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland alongside a trigger-happy car thief. The outsider has to face marauders with vehicles capable of intense destruction, along with other open road dangers and a crazy clown with a recognizable ice cream truck.”

Speaking of a “crazy clown,” Will Arnett, known best perhaps for his portrayal of Bojack Horseman in the show of the same name, will reportedly lend his voice talents to the Twisted Metal show, playing the iconic character Sweet Tooth. His role is described as a “cameo” however, so it will be interesting to see just how much involvement the character will have.

Lastly, it has been reported that Anthony Mackie, who plays ‘Falcon’ in the MCU, has been offered the lead role in this show. As of right now however, it is not confirmed whether he will indeed be playing the lead or not.

With it coming up to two years since the initial announcement, it will be interesting to see whether we will get any official information on the Twisted Metal TV show any time soon.
