The Twitch Plays community has achieved some staggering feats, beating multiple games including Dark Souls by using commands in Twitch’s chat box to control the character on screen. Now, the community has gathered together to tackle Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s World of Light campaign.

Twitch Plays Pokémon popularised the community-controlled format back in 2014, with its 1,165,140 participants earning the social experiment a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records. This continued onto a number of other games, such as Halo and even Dark Souls, each of which were eventually bested. It has also spawned a number of homages, transforming ‘Twitch Plays’ into somewhat of a genre as well as an official channel.

CommunityController is a channel that has fully embraced this emerging genre, with GBAtemp user Sasori challenging people to “complete the World of Light and maybe even unlock all of the characters” in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Sasori is keeping a close eye on the feedback of the community, including adding, removing and modifying commands, also making the code available on their GitHub.

Traversing the World of Light has been a difficult task so far in the fast-paced fighter, with the community managing to best a handful of fighters over the past four days. They are truly adapting however, making firm use of the “menu” command to pause the game and give the group of players a chance to think and synchronise. During my time watching, I even saw the community take Mario into training.

Overall, players seem a little frustrated that simple commands such as “left” and “right” activate taunts on the D-Pad rather than directing the character, but these are minor gripes from those that haven’t read the command list. If you think you have what it takes, head on over to the channel.

KitGuru Says: There’s a long way to go, but do you think that players will be able to unlock all 74 fighters? How about being able to best the World of Light? I mean, Twitch Plays did manage to beat Dark Souls, after all.

The Twitch Plays phenomenon kicked off with Twitch Plays Pokemon, allowing the community to control the game via the chat box. Then, just over a month ago, things were kicked up a notch with Twitch Plays Dark Souls, nobody thought they could do it but after 43 days, Dark Souls has been beaten.

Obviously there were some caveats to this win, in-fact, some would consider the new method as cheating. In order to get through the game, it was modded to automatically pause to allow chat to vote on what to do next and organize a proper strategy. This essentially turned Dark Souls in to a turn based game.

Either way though, the achievement is still fairly impressive. The game only took 43 days, eight hours, fourteen minutes and 23 seconds to complete. As you would imagine, the death count is fairly high, with 904 of them occurring during the playthrough.

The Twitch Plays formula has since been applied to Fallout 3 and will likely spread to more games following this, in-fact Dark Souls 2 has already begun. It certainly is pretty popular amongst Twitch users and interested to keep tabs on.

KitGuru Says: It's understandable why they modded Dark Souls, the Twitch Plays chat never would have managed the entire playthrough without it. Did any of you catch any of Twitch Plays Dark Souls? I caught a few of the boss fights but that's mostly it.

Less than a month ago, Twitch launched ‘Twitch Plays Dark Souls'. Nobody expected the Twitch chat to get very far in the game but after a few changes to the way Twitch Plays operates, things have been going pretty smoothly, with the community managing to take down Ornstein and Smough.

This is arguably one of the hardest challenges that Dark Souls has to offer. One of the two bosses is fast moving, while the other is slow and could catch you off guard.

Ornstein and Smough

Fairly early on, Twitch Plays Dark Souls changed the rules a little bit, as the game has been modified to pause briefly in order to give chat some time to co-ordinate an actual strategy of some form. This slows the game down quite a bit and adds a turn-based element to it.

In some ways, you could call this cheating. However, without this method, it is likely that the people contributing to Twitch Plays Dark Souls never would have made it this far. You can find the stream for yourself, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Even with the new system in place, it is still pretty impressive that Twitch has managed to get so far in to Dark Souls. Have any of you looked at the stream? Do you agree with the changes that were made?

Two heads are better than one, or so the old saying goes. The point is that when great minds think alike, they can achieve more than their respective parts ever could. Unfortunately though, as much as team-based superhero movies would have us believe, that doesn't scale up linearly. In fact, once you get beyond a few people it's clear that the “too many cooks” analogy becomes much more applicable. Especially when you consider the latest Twitch Plays is an attempt to beat Dark Souls.

twitchplays

Of course “Twitch Plays X” streams have shown that through persistence and dumb luck, many games can be completed if you bash the buttons hard and often enough. Previously the crowd powered gaming phenomenon has defeated the likes of the Elite Four, beating the entirety of Pokemon Red and various other entities in that universe, as well as Halo and various Hearthstone match ups, so confidence is to be expected.

But Dark Souls? That's just asking for trouble.

Yes, a human may have been able to defeat it with Guitar Hero controller, but that's one man, with the power of his one brain. Twitch Plays Dark Souls, has thousands of minds all screaming to have their commands listened to.

It's not going quite so well as with other games.

For now, a character has been made – unfortunately a Cleric – and the menu is getting more screen time than the game world, but the hive mind has still managed to get their character up the first couple of floors of the starting area. While it seems unlikely they'll ever make it to the first boss, let alone defeat it, it's still quite funny to watch the character rolling into a wall, turning around and repeating it ad nauseum.

KitGuru Says: Good luck to those that are willing to soldier through. It will be ridiculously impressive if this makes it much further.

Twitch Plays is a pretty interesting idea, a game is set up and streamed, then the chat gets to control the entire game. Twitch viewers helped beat several Pokemon games and now Twitch Plays is taking on something a little more challenging, Halo Combat Evolved.

Bungie's classic shooter is the latest to join the Twitch Plays craze. The game is set in a 3D environment so the Twitch chat has to move Master Chief, avoid obstacles, aim the gun and shoot down targets. It isn't going to be an easy game to beat, especially with hundreds of commands being input at once.

Twitch Plays Halo: Combat Evolved has been running for around 24 hours now and as you can imagine, progress has been pretty slow. Right now there are around 1200 people in the chat, trying to guide Master Chief through the first level once you escape the space ship at the start of the game.

You can watch and participate in Twitch Plays Halo, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Twitch Plays Halo could take a while to finish but this is an interesting experiment considering that Halo is considerably more complicated to get through than any of the Pokemon games.

If you thought Twitch Plays Pokemon was an exercise in frustration, have a look at the new Hearthmind collaborative play stream, as for now, with player numbers only in double digits, it is actually possible to do something worthwhile with your clicks.

It's not even a case of just being lucky either, as the 60 odd people playing this at the time of writing have actually managed to win a few games, reaching 20 in ranked play, so they are invested in playing well, mostly.

The only real problem comes with the end turn button being so easy to click.

Actions are decided upon every five seconds, with players able to click and drag anywhere to log their vote for the next action. When the timer at the top of the screen hits zero, the game will randomly select one of the given actions and perform it after a small delay. At that point, the timer will restart and the process can begin again.

It's not the fastest way to play the game, but then again neither was Twitch plays Pokemon and they actually managed to finish the entire game in just a few days.

KitGuru Says: Not sure I could play this for very long. I have a feeling it will get too furstrating, but I‘ll be interested to see how it gets on over the next few days. You know it'll be playing constantly, so has the potential to get quite far if enough experienced players get in on the action.
