It has been a few years since Amazon first introduced ‘Twitch Prime', a reward scheme for Amazon Prime subscribers that also happen to watch content on Twitch. Over time though, it became apparent that the Twitch Prime branding was out of place compared to other Amazon services and as a result, it is changing.

This week, Amazon rebranded Twitch Prime as Prime Gaming in an effort to broaden the service's appeal and audience. A lot of people still think of Twitch Prime as a way to get a free subscription to a streamer, but it is actually home to a host of freely claimable games, DLC and other additional content for partnered games.

Prime Gaming will continue to offer the same service as Twitch Prime and will also remain bundled with Amazon Prime. Speaking with The Washington Post, Prime Gaming director, Larry Plotnick, explained that this change has “nothing negative to do about Twitch”, but was necessary to “reach as broad an audience as possible”.

He also goes on to say that right now, Prime Gaming has “over 50 pieces of content available to customers, 30 pieces of content for in-game and another 20 free games that people can download and keep forever”.

KitGuru Says: Changing Twitch Prime to Prime Gaming makes sense, as it is in-line with Amazon's other services, like Amazon Prime, Prime Music and Prime Video. Importantly though, subscribers aren't losing out on any of the features that were implemented with Twitch Prime, making for a smooth transition.

Each month, Twitch offers a number of free games to subscribers of its Prime service. April’s free games include a number of classics such as Turok, among a plethora of indie experiences – all of which can be had for free to those who are currently subscribed to Twitch Prime. The free games in question are: Turok, Kathy Rain, Earthlock, Etherborn, and Lightmatter.

Kathy Rain “tells the story of a strong-willed journalism major who has to come to terms with her own troubled past as she investigates the mysterious death of her recently deceased grandfather”. Released in 2016, this point and click title received a positive reception from both critics and fans alike.

Earthlock is an adventure RPG which takes heavy inspiration from classic 3D RPGs from the 90s. With a “fresh take on turn based combat and character progression,” you must “embark on a journey to save the beautiful world of Umbra, a harsh planet that stopped spinning thousands of cycles ago”. The game received mixed reviews, due in part to its lackluster story and polish. Still, others have shown appreciation for its throwback nature, so it’s worth checking out and making your own mind up.

Etherborn is a third person puzzle platformer with an emphasis on exploration and gravity shifting mechanics. In Etherborn, “You are a voiceless being that has just been born into a world where a bodiless voice awaits your arrival. Go forth and seek your purpose.”

Lightmatter is another puzzler, but this time utilising a first person perspective. Described as a love-letter to the genre, the game requires you to “use lateral thinking to solve mind-bending puzzles with lights, shadows, beams, platforms, and lightmatter.”

The final game available for free is Turok. This first person 3D exploration shooter first released in 1997, and quickly became a cult classic. Originally released for the N64, this version boasts “a new visual engine and exciting new features to sink your teeth into!” If you missed this title back when it first came out, you now have a chance to delve into the history of 3D gaming for the low price of free.

All these titles are currently available to Twitch Prime subscribers. Come May, you will no longer be able to add these games to your library – though if you ‘purchased’ it beforehand, then you’ll keep the games forever, even after your subscription elapses.

In an effort to strengthen its relationship with content creators, Nintendo ditched its controversial Creators Program at the end of last year hoping to “make it easier” to monetise videos based on the publisher’s games. Now, Nintendo has partnered up with Twitch to offer Prime members a free year of its Switch Online subscription worth £17.99/€19.99/$19.99.

Nintendo Switch Online provides a range of benefits for its users, from allowing players to access online multiplayer games, play classic NES games and access cloud saves for games that support the feature. It’s the cheapest of all of the first-party network services, but that doesn’t make Twitch’s offer any less appealing.

In order to minimise abuse of the offer, Twitch is initially allowing Prime users to redeem the first three months before releasing the remaining nine-month membership after 60 days have passed. Interested parties have until September 28 to redeem the offer, with the remaining nine months available until January 28.

Existing Switch Online subscribers needn’t worry about having jumped the gun, as the memberships will stack on top of their remaining time left. Those that don’t wish to continue the subscription beyond the free period will need to be aware that membership will “automatically convert to a 3-month membership for £6.99/€7.99/$7.99 unless automatic renewal is turned off any time up to 48 hours before the end of the initial 3-month membership” or a 12-month subscription at the end of 9 months.

Benefits like these are available to both new and existing Twitch Prime subscribers, inclusive within the £7.99/$12.99 per month or £79/$119 per year Amazon Prime service. Of course, it wouldn’t be worth hopping on board for this Nintendo Switch Online deal alone, but for those interested in free PC games, a free free monthly channel subscription to Affiliates and Partners, free next-day delivery from Amazon, Amazon Prime Video and a range of other benefits, it’s more than worth it.

KitGuru Says: While this doesn’t exactly comfort those that have to now suffer through advertisements despite subscribing, it’s certainly a nice benefit that wasn’t there before. I think I might have to grab Splatoon 2 in order to celebrate.

Since the streaming platform was absorbed by Amazon, the Twitch Prime subscription has offered a range of goodies, from a free channel subscription, exclusive in-game content and even games themselves. The main reason people often made sure to continue paying, however, was the ability to view content without advertisements which has now been relegated to the higher priced Twitch Turbo tier.

New Twitch Prime members will lose the benefit of ad-free viewing from September 14th, while those already continuing the £7.99 per month subscription will lose the perk on 15th October. Those on an annual £79 subscription will be able to utilise the feature until their subscription comes up for renewal. To continue ad-free viewing, users will need to opt for a further $8.99 subscription to Twitch Turbo.

Amazon made the controversial decision in order to help Twitch streamers, as advertising makes up a lot of the monetary support a lot of streamers get. Users can still use the included free Prime subscription to get ad-free content with their favourite streamer, allowing money to still reach the pocket of the content creator. Prior to this, each broadcaster simply lost a chunk of revenue.

“This change will strengthen and expand that advertising opportunity for creators so they can get more support from their viewers for doing what they love,” explains the blog post. “We want Twitch to remain a place where anyone can enjoy one-of-a-kind interactive entertainment, and ads allow us to continue making Twitch the best place for creators to build communities around the things they love and make money doing it.”

Of course, the decision has been met with backlash as a lot of users come forward with threats of cancelling their subscription. For many, their choice to subscribe was solely hinged on the ability to view without advertisements, going as far to shun the extra content in favour of an ad-free experience to return.

Given the severity of the backlash, rival streaming services led by YouTube Gaming, Microsoft’s Mixer, Facebook Gaming and Valve’s upcoming Steam.TV are sure to benefit as users look to get their fix of content elsewhere.

KitGuru Says: I can understand Amazon’s move, although it’s difficult to see how this will benefit both viewers and content creators. Hopefully the system isn’t abused by streamers, who can choose when an ad hits the screen. It would be beneficial for when they take a break or go momentarily AFK, however. How do you feel about the change up?

Since Amazon’s acquisition of Twitch and the subsequent expansion of its Prime membership, the company has offered a free game each month to its premiums subscribers. Now, it’s shaking things up with its Indie Amplifier Program, built to help independent game studios while placing the choice in players’ hands.

Until March 11th, Prime members can vote for one of eight games that they want to receive at the end of the month, with the winner announced four days later on March 15th. Living up to its title, the program will offer the winner of the vote along with the two runner-ups $175,000 to aid them in their future ventures.

During the voting process, Twitch will coordinate streams to helps promote each game, giving each studio exposure and aiding Prime members in their decision. This includes interviews with developers in special livestreams and Ask Me Anything (AMA) events.

The eight games in the current selection are:

  • Tales from Candlekeep: Tomb of Annihilation (BKOM Studios)
  • Tumblestone (The Quantum Astrophysicists Guild)
  • Treadnauts (Topstitch Games)
  • High Hell (Terri Vellmann)
  • I, Hope (Arconyx Studios)
  • Shadow Tactics (Mimimi Productions)
  • Kingsway (Andrew Morrish)
  • SteamWorld Dig 2 (Image & Form)

Adding the choice into the mix is to help it further differentiate from previous offers implemented by Microsoft and Sony on their Xbox Games with Gold and PlayStation Plus respectively. Of course, the biggest reason is to give Indie games a bigger platform on Twitch.

Access to free games isn’t the only thing offered by Twitch Prime, with members also receiving the ability to view without advertisements, exclusive emoticons, extended chat options, a free Twitch subscription to any affiliated or partnered channel per month and a neat optional badge by the side of their name.

Of course, all of this is only beneficial for those that link their Twitch account to their Amazon.

KitGuru Says: Having already been a Prime subscriber for the One-Day Delivery, Amazon Prime TV and even to some extent the Prime Music selection, Twitch integration made the deal even sweeter. There’s also audiobooks included, if that’s your thing. As for this Indie Amplifier Program, it’s great to see Amazon pushing to help the little guys out there while giving its viewers control. Do you like the idea of the new initiative?

It has been around two years since Amazon acquired Twitch and in that time, it has mostly been business as usual for the streaming service. However, it looks like Amazon is stepping up its involvement in the gaming world now, not only did the retailer announce three brand new games from its in-house studio at Twitchcon this week but now Amazon Prime subscribers are also set to get Twitch benefits, including ad-free viewing.

Twitch Prime is a “premium experience” that comes bundled with Amazon Prime memberships. It includes ad-free viewing, new emotes for the chat, a chat badge and one free channel subscription every 30 days. The free subscription means you can still support your favourite streamer without needing to pay extra if you subscribe to Amazon Prime. However, Prime subs do not auto-renew, so you can change your free subscription every 30 days, or resubscribe to a specific channel.

ap_resize-php

Twitch Prime is currently available in the US, Canada, UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. Here in the UK, a Prime membership costs £7.99 per month, or £79 per year, in the US it works out at $10.99 per month or $99 per year. For EU countries, pricing does vary, with France and Germany paying 49 euros per year and Italy/Spain paying 19.99/19.95 euros per year.

The final key feature for Twitch Prime is in-game loot each month. Going forward, Prime subscribers will get various in-game items for certain titles each month, those who subscribe this month will get access to a new Hearthstone hero, as well as an indie game called ‘Streamline'. If you already have Amazon Prime, you can now link your Amazon and Twitch accounts to take advantage of these new perks.

KitGuru Says: Given that Amazon owns Twitch, this idea makes a lot of sense, after all, they have been trying to justify the higher subscription prices since the launch of Prime Video and now, they might just win over some of the gaming crowd.
