If you're a regular Twitch viewer, you're one of a growing number of people that are helping stream millions of hours worth of content per month, far more than the regular playtime of some of the biggest game releases, which is ironic really because that's what people are watching footage of.

These stats came out of the Twitch 2013 Retrospective, which detailed a lot of the service's achievements over the year, as well as how many people used it – in short, a lot. In total Twitch served over 45 million viewers in 2013, which is more than double its previous year. Similarly minutes watched increased to a whopping 12 billion, which equates out to 200 million hours of viewing time.

What's really interesting about Twitch though, is that it seems to be changing people's viewing habits. The average person (over 58 per cent of those asked) watches over 20 hours a week of Twitch streams, with an even bigger number, 68 per cent suggesting that they have decreased their TV watching in order to get in more Twitch stream time.

Most of them prefer live streams too. While 99 per cent of people that tune into Twitch channels watch live action, only 38 per cent watch video highlights.

There's lots of other status to check out if you like reading such things, but I'll leave you with one final one before closing up this news item: the most searched for game on Twitch in 2013? Magic the Gathering.

Kitguru Says: I'm not a massive Twitch viewer myself, but there's something quite fun about participating in a collective watching experience thanks to the chat functions. Far better than passive TV viewing and then talking about it the next day.

Headset maker Turtle Beach, has announced a partnership with esports streaming service, Twitch.tv, meaning that the former will provide sound equipment for official Twitch esports events, as the official audio partner.

The benefit for Turtle Beach, is of course exposure, with advertising placements in-front of Twitch's multiple tens of millions of viewers, as well as promotion at the actual events themselves, with the gamers seen wearing Turtle Beach hardware.

“We're excited to partner with Twitch and provide them with our advanced tournament and broadcast products for their eSports and gaming events,” said Turtle Beach CMO Bob Picunko (via GamesIndustry). Twitch's CEO, Emmett Shear, also commented “We're proud to have [Turtle Beach] as our official audio partner.”

I want them to make a new mouse called the Twitch Turtle

“With the innovative features available in Turtle Beach's audio gear, anyone in the Twitch community will be able to easily broadcast their games and audio commentary with professional quality results,” continued Shear.

Turtle Beach was initially an audio card manufacturer/developer, competing directly with the likes of Creative. However in recent years it's diversified and focused on consumer grade audio hardware, becoming quite successful in the process.

KitGuru Says: This is a decent move for both companies. It gives Twitch a decent prize pack partner for runners up at events and gives Turtle Beach a great platform to demo new products. Any of you guys rocking Turtle Beach hardware?

In an update that is due for release next week, EA has announced that it will be adding Twitch streaming to its Origin games platform, allowing players to easily share their in-game footage live, with viewers around the world.

Apparently it'll be a relatively simply thing to activate too. All you need do is pull up the Origin menu in-game by pressing Shift and F1 and then click on the little camera icon that appears at the bottom of the screen. From there you'll need to either create a Twitch account or login to your existing one, at which point you'll be given a few options to play with. These include microphone and game volume – with mute options for both – and a start/stop broadcast button.

Origin Broadcast
There's a few adjustments you can make to customise the viewing experience

While you're streaming, your footage will be viewable by anyone at Twitch.tv/[YourTwitchName] but in-case you forget, a little broadcast indicator will appear on the top of your screen to tell you how many people are watching. It can however be disabled if you find it distracting.

However if this is all a bit simple and you want to fine tune the streaming experience for your viewers, you'll be able to do so through the Origin Broadcast tab. From there you can change resolution, frame rate and even set it up so that as soon as you start playing you go live, forgoing any form of activation.

KitGuru Says: Just remember guys, unless you deliberately turn it down or off, your microphone will be audible too. All those horrific, sexist remarks you make will be broadcast for the world to hear.
