With the PlayStation 4, Sony’s controllers included a new share button, making it easier for players to capture videos and screenshots of their games to publish on various social media including Twitter. Though no particular reason was given as to why, Sony has now announced that they are removing all integration with Twitter/X.

Making the announcement, Sony posted a message to PlayStation users via their consoles, saying (as shared by Wario64):

“IMPORTANT CHANGES TO PLAYSTATION COMMUNITIES ON YOUR PS5 CONSOLE. As of November 13, 2023, integration with X (formerly known as Twitter) will no longer function on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 consoles.”

This change seems to be all-encompassing, with the message continuing: “This includes the ability to view any content published on X on PS5/PS4, and the ability to post and view content, trophies, and other gameplay related activities on X directly from PS5/PS4 (or link an X account to do so).”

While Sony did not offer any reasons for the disintegration of Twitter from PlayStation, the social media site has garnered a great number of controversies ever since it was purchased by Elon Musk last year. It is perhaps for this reason that PlayStation has decided to distance itself from the platform.

If you've made the wise decision to get off of Twitter in recent months then you may have missed the latest drama around Starfield. The game's status as an Xbox and PC exclusive has already ruffled plenty of feathers. In the latest attempt to criticise the unreleased game, a former Blizzard developer pointed to the game's main menu screen as proof that the game will be bad.

Mark Kern, known as Grummz on Twitter, previously worked at Blizzard in the early days, working on Diablo 2, Warcraft 3 and eventually, World of Warcraft. In a tweet over the weekend, Kern pointed to a leaked screenshot of Starfield's main menu screen, somehow claiming that its simplicity is a sign that the game was “rushed”, adding that it could also be a sign that the development team “didn't care” about the project and just wanted to get it out of the door.

A lot of people have already rightfully made fun of this take, as the main menu screen should be the last thing anyone cares about when picking up a new game. Bethesda executive and long-time PR man, Pete Hines, addressed the situation himself yesterday afternoon, clarifying that Starfield's menu has been in place for years and is one of the first things that the development team settled on.

Hines added that this sort of dig is “highly unprofessional coming from another dev”.

Since leaving Blizzard, Kern attempted to run his own studio, Red 5, with the goal of releasing a new MMO, Firefall. After a good chunk of budget was spent on a custom Firefall bus as part of a marketing stunt, and a string of other issues at Red 5 studios, Kern was ousted as CEO of the company. Firefall eventually shut down in 2017.

Last week, Meta officially launched Threads, its very own version of Twitter, adding to the social media giant's ever-growing network of sites and apps. In the first 24 hours, around 50 million people signed up to use Threads and over the weekend, that number doubled to 100 million.

Threads has garnered 100 million users in the days following its launch. These aren't just random sign-ups either, people are actively using the site, with The Verge reporting 95 million posts as of July 6th. The number will have grown considerably since then. The service doesn't have as many features as Twitter at this point, but the building blocks are in place, so it will be up to Meta to introduce improvements and additional features in the months ahead.

Right now, Threads is tied to Instagram, so you can link your Threads and Instagram accounts but the content and follower/following pools are separate.

Elon Musk has already filed a lawsuit against Meta alleging the theft of trade secrets and misappropriation of intellectual property. Meta has already denied hiring former Twitter employees for its Threads engineering team.

In recent months, we had heard rumours that Meta was now working on a Twitter competitor, which would be tied to Instagram in some form. This week, Zuckerberg's latest social media platform, Threads, officially launched – it is indeed very similar to Twitter, so Elon Musk is suing.

Threads officially became available to the world this week and tens of millions of users flocked right to the new platform. Early reports around day-one sign-ups are still coming in but right now, the consensus is that roughly 50 million users signed up for Threads on its first day. Currently, Threads is only available as a mobile app, although public accounts can be browsed from the web.

The launch of Threads has irked Elon Musk, who promptly filed a lawsuit against Meta alleging the theft of trade secrets and misappropriation of intellectual property. The lawsuit alleges that Meta hired former Twitter staff and used their knowledge to fast-track a Twitter clone to market. On Threads, Meta Comms lead, Andy Stone, addressed this, saying that nobody on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee.

With all of that said, Zuckerberg hasn't been shy about Threads and its position as a direct competitor to Twitter. On the day of the app's launch, Zuckerberg took to Twitter to post the following:

As you might anticipate from a Zuckerberg-led social media platform, there are already some concerns about the amount of data Threads requests from your iOS and Android devices.

Whether or not Threads can maintain its momentum remains to be seen. While we may disagree with some of the chances Musk has introduced to Twitter, the app is still currently more feature-rich compared to Threads, but that is an issue that can be solved with time. We'll also have to wait and see what happens with Musk's lawsuit against Twitter.

Recently we reported that Ed Boon, the founder of NetherRealm Studios, revealed that the developer’s much-anticipated next game was not going to be at The Game Awards. The show came and went, and indeed there was no NRS news. That being said, according to Boon himself, the next title by the studio is planned for release in 2023 – and will be their longest-supported title so far.

Ed Boon is an active Twitter user, and is much more transparent and open with fans than most with him consistently responding to questions online. As part of his latest AMA (ask me anything), Boon revealed that 2023 will be NRS’ big year, where in response to one fan who asked “can we expect a revel (sic) for your next game soon (by soon i mean the next 6 months),” to which Boon simply responded “Likely.”

That is not all however, as an/other fan asked him “Can we get a release window for the next project?” to which Boon cheekily replied with “I really shouldn’t 23-answer that” – confirming that assuming no complications arise, NRS fans will likely be playing their upcoming game by this time next year at the latest.

NRS have in the past seen quite a quick turnaround with their games, releasing a new title every other year. Mortal Kombat 11 has now been out for over 3 years with no new game in sight, but this seems to be all in service of longer-term support, with Boon responding to one fan’s question about MK11, saying:

“MK11 support was the longest we supported a game. Next game should be even longer”. While we do not yet know what game NRS is working on, Boon previously claimed that it will either be Injustice 3 or Mortal Kombat 12. Fortunately, we will find out within the next 6 months.

Nvidia has had a run of bad luck with cybersecurity this year. Earlier in the year, a ransomware attack was carried out against Nvidia. Now, the company's Taiwan region Twitter account has been breached and naturally, the hacker used this opportunity to run a crypto scam.

VideoCardz was the first to share this unusual post, where we see an official Nvidia account promoting Dogeathon 2022 and “giving” holders a chance to win some Bitcoin, Dogecoin and Ethereum. Accompanying the post, there was a “scammy” picture with Doge, Elon Musk and the Twitter logo.

The Nvidia Taiwan account has been inactive since 2019, with little to almost no engagement. So, of course, posting something like this was a bit surprising. At the time of the post, the account was “verified”, but it seems someone got a hold of it and tried to use Nvidia's name to make the scam more credible.

The account has since been suspended, but while the post was online, some may have clicked on the link. We don't know the URL's destination, but chances are it was another portion of a phishing scam, or an attempt to steal cryptocurrency.

KitGuru says: A lot of companies hold onto inactive social media accounts, but if passwords still aren't being changed periodically, those credentials can eventually make their way into the hands of bad actors. Nvidia has not yet commented publicly on the social media issue.

Typically once YouTubers reach a certain audience size, they'll start getting invited to pre-release events for games to get early hands-on. These sessions tend to come with an NDA and we usually don't hear about them until an embargo lifts. Ubisoft is going to have to be a bit more careful about who they invite in future, as one well-known YouTuber just outed themselves as the source for several leaks.

Dan Allen Gaming, a YouTube channel with almost 200,000 subscribers, attended several pre-release events this year in order to create content for his channel. However, in an ill-advised chase for internet clout, Allen set up an anonymous Twitter account called ‘The Real Insider' and then began leaking information learned from these pre-release events and circumventing any embargo or NDA in place.

Much like Kevin Durant tweeting from his burner, Allen was caught out after replying to a tweet without switching accounts.

In an apology video, Allen also confirms that some of the tweets he made from is ‘Insider' account were completely false. While the Ubisoft leaks were legitimate, he also fabricated a Metal Gear Solid remake and Silent Hill leak. Allen also explains that he guessed God of War: Ragnarök would be at Sony's recent State of Play after seeing Christopher Judge (Kratos VA) retweet Sony's announcement of the stream, adding another fake leak to the list.

Ubisoft has responded already with the following statement (via Kotaku):

“We regularly provide access and information on our games under NDA to trusted partners. When that trust is compromised, or information is leaked by an individual, it’s not only damaging and demoralizing to our teams, but it takes away from an exciting reveal moment and experience for our players. While we won’t speak on an individual case, we do take these matters seriously and will manage accordingly.”

If Allen signed an NDA, he could be in legal trouble. At the very least, he will be blacklisted from future events. Due to everything that went down, it seems unlikely that other major publishers will look to work with him in the future either.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: This has been one of the crazier industry stories we've seen this month. Perhaps the Dan Allen Gaming channel will continue, but it won't be an easy journey, especially if publishers start refusing review code and access to individuals for interviews.

For the last few months, there has been a mysterious Twitter account that has been leaking a bunch of high profile games with a high rate of accuracy. The user has been quiet for a little while, but returned this week just ahead of THQ's next showcase.

The Snitch is a Twitter user who appeared in June and swiftly made a name for themselves with a number of leaks around Sony's State of Play stream, and other big announcements made over the summer. Now, they are back again, this time hinting at a new Alone in the Dark game. THQ Nordic acquired this survival horror IP quite some time ago and it seems they are ready to reveal something new.

The Snitch has been so accurate with their leaks that we have wondered how they are managing it. The leading theory right now is that this person has access to YouTube's database, allowing them to see the titles for private and unlisted videos, which game publishers will upload in the days ahead of a major showcase so they can make each trailer live swiftly after a public announcement.

This latest leak adds some weight to that theory. THQ Nordic's showcase takes place in a few days, on the 12th of August. It is likely that the company has begun uploading trailers to YouTube in unlisted form ahead of the event.

Alone in the Dark is a survival horror series that originally began in the 90s, and was rebooted in 2008. The last game in the series was released in 2015 but it did not review well. In 2018, THQ Nordic acquired the IP and has presumably been working on a revival ever since.

KitGuru Says: It looks like the Alone in the Dark series is set to return fairly soon. Given this leaker's previous accuracy, it is highly likely that this will be part of THQ Nordic's upcoming showcase.

Throughout the year, Twitter keeps track of the video game discussions taking place on its platform. Last year, the social network announced that Genshin Impact was the most Tweeted about game for all of 2021. 6 months into 2022 and the free-to-play title continues its reign at the top.

Taking to their blog, Twitter gave gaming fans insight into the discussions happening on their platform, revealing that across the more than 1.5 billion gaming-related Tweets “Genshin Impact remained atop the charts for Most Tweeted About Video Game globally, after claiming the title in 2021. And everyone’s favorite daily activity, Wordle, took the no. 2 spot.”

The full top 10 list for the first half of 2022 is as follows:

  1. Genshin Impact
  2. Wordle
  3. Ensemble Stars!
  4. Final Fantasy
  5. Project Sekai
  6. Apex Legends
  7. Elden Ring
  8. Fate/Grand Order
  9. Valorant
  10. The Legend of Zelda

While this list shares many similarities with last year’s most discussed games, there have been some interesting shifts, with titles including Minecraft, Fortnite and Animal Crossing: New Horizons not making this year’s top 10.

Of course, we are only halfway through the year, and with heavy hitters such as God of War Ragnarok and Splatoon 3 still on their way, the top 10 list may look entirely different come the end of 2022. We will have to wait and see.

After seemingly joking about it earlier this year, Elon Musk made a bid to acquire Twitter in April 2022, offering $43 billion for control of the company. Shortly after, Musk put the deal ‘on hold' while awaiting accurate information on the number of spam bot accounts on the platform. Now, Musk wants to scrap the deal entirely, and Twitter's legal team isn't too pleased about it.

Elon Musk announced that he would be dropping his bid for Twitter, claiming breach of contract over the spam account situation. Now, Twitter is suing Musk for backing out on the merger agreement, citing “material contract breaches by Musk that have cast a pall over Twitter and its business”.

The lawsuit alleges that Musk's public statements about Twitter following the merger agreement have damaged the company. Twitter also calls out Musk's mass-information requests as a way to tank the deal before closing.

Musk has responded to Twitter's lawsuit in the form of a meme, doubling down on the idea that Twitter refused to disclose accurate data on bot accounts on the platform.

KitGuru Says: I'm not a contract lawyer but it seems that backing out of the Twitter deal is not going to be easy. Still, disputes like this can take quite some time to solve, so we'll have to keep an eye out for further updates in the months to come.

Just two weeks ago, Elon Musk secured a deal to acquire Twitter for $44 billion. Now, following Twitter's most recent quarterly earnings report, the deal has been put ‘temporarily on hold' in order to investigate the true number of spam and fake accounts on the platform.

After the deal announcement, Musk did say that spam, bot and fake accounts were a big issue that he would be looking to tackle upon taking over Twitter. As part of Twitter's new earnings report, the company estimates that spam accounts represented “less than 5%” of its monthly active users in the last quarter. However, the company also notes that “our estimation of false or spam accounts may not accurately represent the actual number of such accounts, and the actual number of false or spam accounts could be higher than we have estimated”.

This led to Musk tweeting out: “Twitter deal temporarily on hold pending details supporting calculation that spam/fake accounts do indeed represent less than 5% of users”. Since then, Twitter stock has dropped by almost 20 percent.

Twitter has inaccurately reported users before. As The Verge points out, recently Twitter admitted that it miscounted its active users for a three-year time period, overcounting users by as much as 1.9 million each quarter. With that in mind, there is good reason to doubt the 5% figure.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: The deal is only temporarily on hold, so for now, it seems that plans will go ahead, unless investigations uncover something drastic.

According to Twitter's press release, the deal is worth around $44 billion at $54.20 per share, a price that Musk said would be his best and final offer.

The announcement also confirms how Musk will be financing the deal, including $25.5 billion in loans, and a $21 billion equity agreement. According to Bret Taylor, Twitter's Independent Board Chair, the board “conducted a thoughtful and comprehensive process to assess Elon's proposal”, and ultimately decided that this is “the best path forward for Twitter's stockholders”.

Speaking on the deal, Musk added that he believes in Twitter's potential, promising to improve it by “enhancing the product with new features, making the algorithms open source to increase trust, defeating the spam bots, and authenticating all humans”.

Elon Musk has always had a huge presence on Twitter, to the point where even if you don’t follow him, you’ve likely seen him pop up in your feed. Now, Musk is making a bid to buy Twitter outright, and despite early reports, it seems the company will accept the offer.

Initially, Musk acquired a 9.2% stake in Twitter, enough to gain an invitation to the company’s board. However, Musk turned down the offer to join the board, which in turn paves the way for Musk to buy more shares. Shortly afterwards, Musk made his intentions clear, making a $54.20 per share acquisition offer, totalling around $43 billion USD.

Reports indicated that Twitter didn't want to sell initially and leadership looked at options, including a “poison pill” defence to avoid a takeover. However, as reported by Reuters today, it seems that Twitter is now leaning towards accepting the offer and allowing Musk to take the reigns.

The deal may be officially announced within hours, with the board set to recommend the transaction to shareholders. Even after a deal is signed though, Twitter could accept an offer from another party if approached, but it would have to pay a ‘break up' fee to Musk to get out of the deal once accepted. We saw an example of this recently, with Nvidia paying Arm over $1 billion after failing to close the acquisition deal.

Elon Musk has always had a huge presence on Twitter, to the point where even if you don't follow him, you've likely seen him pop up in your feed. A couple of weeks ago, Musk bought into Twitter, acquiring a minority stake. Now, he's looking to buy the company in full.

Initially, Musk acquired a 9.2% stake in Twitter, enough to gain an invitation to the company's board. However, Musk turned down the offer to join the board, which in turn paves the way for Musk to buy more shares in a potential hostile takeover. It might not get to that point though, as he has now offered to acquire the company in full for $54.20 per share – or $41.4 billion in total.

Musk made this public today, tweeting “I made an offer” along with a link to the SEC filing page. A letter to Twitter's chair, Bret Taylor, has also been published, in which, Musk explains that he believes he can unlock the platform's full potential, but the company needs to be taken private first.

Musk also expressed a lack of confidence in Twitter's management and added that he will “reconsider” his position as a shareholder if he can't take the company private.

“I invested in Twitter as I believe in its potential to be the platform for free speech around the globe, and I believe free speech is a societal imperative for a functioning democracy. However, since making my investment I now realise the company will neither thrive nor serve this societal imperative in its current form. Twitter needs to be transformed as a private company”, Musk wrote.

“My offer is my best and final offer and if it is not accepted, I would need to reconsider my position as a shareholder. Twitter has extraordinary potential. I will unlock it.”

Currently, Twitter's board is considering the offer, but that's all the information we have for now. No formal response has been made, so we'll just have to wait and see how this plays out.

KitGuru Says: While Twitter has a huge userbase, the company has always struggled with the monetisation side of things, especially compared to rivals like Facebook. Elon Musk might have some good ideas for the platform, but this also comes at a time where there is much concern over the amount of power tech billionaires have managed to gain.

Many fans were left surprised by the recent reveal of the new Saints Row reboot, which looks to be taking a different approach to the GTA clone-turned wacky superhero sandbox franchise. In order to familiarise fans of the franchise with this new direction, the team answered a variety of questions, including the question of “How come the characters dress differently than how I expected?”

In a thread on Twitter, the official Saints Row account answered some of the most common lingering questions attributed to the upcoming Saints Row game in the wake of its reveal at Gamescom 2021.

Some of the questions included ‘Can I customise my character in Saints Row?’ to which they said “YES. We have the most in depth character creator in any Saints game. Create who you want”. As part of this customisation, there will be 8 different voice options letting you match your characters looks to how they sound.

One of the most asked questions was whether the new Saints Row would continue the trend of offering co-op, to which they revealed “Of course!  Saints Row is always best with a friend!  We’ve confirmed fully untethered co-op across the whole game.  Better yet, this works across generations of hardware – so players on a PS4 can still play co-op with those on PS5 for example.”

Despite its move away from what many know to be Saints Row, this reboot will still feature “that signature Saints sense of humour” as well as the “signature Saints Row gameplay,” being described as “a Saints game through and through.”

Lastly, the trailer showed off a much greater variety in clothing than previous games, with the question “How come the characters dress differently than how I expected?” being tackled by the team saying “Anyone can be in a gang if you have the right skills, they don’t necessarily need to be stereotypical, our previous characters didn’t dress how you’d expect. The ones you suspect the least are often the most dangerous.”

While Saints Row certainly offered its own unique and fun gameplay, stories and more, it was clear with Saints Row: Gat out of Hell that the franchise had come to its natural conclusion. It is therefore exciting to see the team go back to the drawing board, reviving the franchise as its own thing – untethered from its roots as a GTA clone. The full Q&A can be found HERE.

With E3 officially coming to an end, it’s time to see which games and conferences ‘won’ E3. One of the biggest hubs for discussing E3 was Twitter. The social media platform has now released its list for the most discussed games, and while some of these entrants are understandable, others are a welcome surprise.

As published on its blog, Twitter revealed that during the official span of E3 – between the 12th to the 15th of June 2021 – “26 of the 30 Worldwide Trends [related] to the event at one point during the 4-day event”. Within this, the United States topped the list with regards to which countries discussed the event the most. This was then followed by Japan, then Spain, and the UK coming in at 4th place.

As for the games themselves, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s sequel was the most talked about game, which is understandable when considering the fact that the first game has sold over 22 million copies.

Second place surprisingly goes to Elden Ring. The upcoming game by FromSoftware was first teased back in E3 2019, before going radio silent. Its much-anticipated return was therefore met with a great deal of excitement – with the game’s trailer being the singularly most watched E3 trailer on Twitter.

The 3rd most discussed game was Battlefield 2042. After going back to WWI and then WWII, fans of the franchise appeared to celebrate Battlefield's return to modern and near-futuristic warfare. Calling back to the franchise’s prime, Battlefield 2042 understandably generated a great deal of buzz.

The 4th most discussed game was Halo: Infinite. After the disappointing gameplay reveal last year, Halo and 343i needed to prove that Infinite would be worth the wait, and this year’s showcase was met with much interest.

Drifting into the top 5 is Forza Horizon 5. A surprise announcement at Microsoft’s E3 conference, Forza Horizon is known for its consistent and high quality output of racing titles – and so an unexpected and surprise announcement at E3 appeared to generate a lot of excitement.

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) was rolled out across the EU back in 2018 and since then, we haven't seen many major fines in the tech or social media space. That changed today, with Ireland's Data Protection Commission officially fining Twitter €450,000 over a data breach.

The data breach was disclosed by Twitter back in January 2019. The breach exposed private tweets for Android users over the course of four years. Due to this, the Data Protection Commission is ruling that Twitter violated the EU's GDPR rules, as disclosure of the security breach did not come within 72 hours of it first being discovered.

Ireland's DPC initially revealed its decision earlier this year, but objections were raised by other regulators. The case then went through a dispute resolution process, which delayed the fine being issued until now.

As pointed out by The Verge, during the dispute resolution process, the DPC was told to increase the amount it was fining Twitter. Initially, they wanted to fine them less than €450,000, but this fell so short of GDPR's maximum 2 percent annual revenue fine amount that an increase was deemed necessary.

Twitter has since issued a statement saying that due to staffing between Christmas Day 2018 and New Years Day 2019 led to a delay in disclosing the breach. The statement goes on to say “We take responsibility for this mistake and remain fully committed to protecting the privacy and data of our customers”. So with that in mind, it doesn't sound like Twitter plans on fighting this at all and will just pay the fine.

KitGuru Says: As one of the social media giants, this won't impact Twitter's bottom line all that much. Still, it is interesting to see the first instance of a major tech company tripping over when it comes to GDPR rules in the EU. Hopefully this serves as a warning to companies to continue to protecting user data and that users are warned properly in the instance of a breach.

Last month, a mysterious Twitter hack saw an unknown actor gaining access to verified accounts and scamming unsuspecting followers out of bitcoin. Accounts that were impacted included huge names like Elon Musk, Bill Gates and Barack Obama, as well as company accounts like Apple and Uber. Now, it appears that a suspect has been caught.

The scam posted on verified accounts drew people in with the promise of ‘double the money back'. If fans deposited an amount, the scammer claimed that they would send back twice as much, all while disguised as some of the biggest names in tech. The scam accrued over $100,000 worth of Bitcoin in a matter of hours.

As it turns out, a teenager may have been behind the exploit and as a result, the suspect's name has not been made public. They are facing 30 felony charges in the United States, including organised fraud, communications fraud, fraudulent use of personal information and access to a computer or electronic device without authority.

While arrests have been made, the money that people have lost may not be recoverable due to the nature of cryptocurrency. The scam was reportedly pulled off by misleading employees and generating plenty of human error within the Twitter support team. Through these methods, those involved were able to phish personal details and carry out the scam.

Recently there have been many rumours springing up regarding the alleged revival of the Silent Hill franchise. The IP has seen very little output since the cancellation of Silent Hills back in 2015. In recent weeks and months however, it appears as though Konami has been preparing for a comeback – with the publisher most recently creating an official Silent Hill Twitter page.

The page (@SilentHill) was created back in early July, however was only recently noticed by fans due to the official verified Konami page referencing the account on a tweet on the 31st of July.

Currently, much of the page’s content are retweets of Silent Hill fan art, or marketing for Dead by Daylight – which recently added Pyramid Head to its roster of playable characters back in June.

Though the creation of a Twitter page doesn't necessarily mean that a new Silent Hill title is on the way, the page’s creation does follow on from a number of recent rumours which have suggested that the franchise is planning a grand return.

Some parallel rumours have suggested that Junji Ito and Hideo Kojima are planning to team up on a horror video game, while others have claimed that Kojima is once again working with Konami on the Silent Hill IP. Other rumours have claimed that Konami has two Silent Hill projects in the works.

Currently, none of the rumours have contradicted one another, and so while the creation of an official Twitter page doesn’t necessarily add any weight to the rumours, it doesn't dilute them either. With the increase in activity from the Silent Hill IP, hopefully it won't be too long before a new entry in the series is indeed revealed.

Recent rumours circulating the internet have suggested that Microsoft might be prepping for a May event, where the console manufacturer will reveal more information on the upcoming Xbox Series X and perhaps even the much-rumoured Lockhart. It would appear as though Phil Spencer himself has now corroborated the rumours, claiming that the company's next event is “not too much of a wait.”

On Twitter, a fan asked Spencer: “How are you feeling about the eventual reveals of new games and new info on the Series X later this year. How is planning going? There are definitely a lot of hungry fans out here!”

Spencer had positive news for the fan, stating that he “reviewed plans yesterday for continued sharing through launch. Team is doing great work and adapting. I've never been more excited about Xbox plans. We've heard you, you want transparency/authenticity. We plan to keep showing that way, next step is not too much of a wait (games).”

Spencer’s statements line up with recent rumours which have claimed that Microsoft is planning a next-gen showcase in May, including the unveiling of “a few upcoming games.”

With May less than a week away, we could be hearing more about Microsoft’s plans for the next generation very soon indeed. Though Spencer hinted that game announcements would be coming soon, it’s not unreasonable to imagine that we might finally be officially introduced to the much-rumoured Lockhart console. Other important details such as pricing have also so far been a mystery. It seems like we won’t have too long to wait to see what Microsoft has in store.

Twitter has begun sending emails out to users disclosing a recently discovered flaw in its Android app. While the issue has been fixed, it “could have compromised” a number of accounts, so users should update as soon as possible.

Twitter confirmed via email and a public blog post that this flaw could have allowed an attacker to view non-public account information like DMs and location, or control the account and send tweets by injecting malicious code.

So far, Twitter says there is no evidence that this flaw was exploited. However, all Twitter for Android users should update to the latest version of the app. The update has been available for a few weeks now but in an effort to give users more of a nudge, emails are being sent out directly about the update.

KitGuru Says: We received one of these emails ourselves last night. If you are using Twitter on Android, then be sure to update soon to stay secure.

It is difficult to know what information to trust when it comes to Splinter Cell at the moment. We’ve had plenty of leaks that didn’t pan out, cross-promotional teases inside of Ubisoft games and even one instance of an Ubisoft director teasing Sam Fisher’s return only for it to be brushed off as a joke. This week, Ubisoft Spain brought Splinter Cell back into the conversation, leaving us to speculate on the series’ future once again.

The official Ubisoft Spain Twitter account tweeted a picture of Sam Fisher this week. As usual, our favourite espionage specialist is sporting the classic night vision goggles. Adding some extra mystery to the post, the person running Ubi’s Spanish Twitter account added a tag line that roughly translates to “You need to understand the darkness in order to face it”. Now, that could have been written by just about anyone, so it’s not necessarily an official tag line for a new Splinter Cell game, but it does hit the right mix of dark and edgy to sound like a line from a marketing department.

Unfortunately, this tweet hasn’t been posted on any other Ubisoft social media account, raising the chance that Ubisoft Spain’s Community Manager just happened to be thinking about Splinter Cell yesterday and thought a quote and picture of Sam Fisher would be good for engagement. If that is the case, then the strategy worked very well, as the tweet has been shared around a ton, not just on social media, but on news sites too- a trap that I am falling into right now as I type this out.

There is some hope for more Splinter Cell in the future though. We already know that Oculus has a deal in place to create VR spin-offs for Splinter Cell and Assassin’s Creed. Beyond that, Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft CEO, has previously said that Splinter Cell will return some day, so we can assume that at least one of the publisher’s studios has been working on it.

Currently, Ubisoft has most of its big 2020 releases planned for the second half of the year after pushing three games out of the ‘early 2020’ release window. The publisher also has two unannounced Triple A games planned for late next year. One of those is bound to be Assassin’s Creed, but the second game is a total mystery, so Splinter Cell is a possibility for now.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: If an Ubisoft developer didn’t already Joke about working on a new Splinter Cell this year, then I would probably have a little more hope in this latest round of speculation. However, given the number of false rumours over the last couple of years, I wouldn’t encourage Splinter Cell fans to get their hopes up just yet unless something more substantial comes along.

Credit where it’s due, Twitter was one of the first companies to push the ever-popular dark mode way back in 2016, but it wasn’t the most effective at saving smartphone batteries with its signature blue-ish hue. AMOLED users can now rejoice, as Twitter has implemented a pitch black “lights out” mode that lets users toggle between both versions of dark mode and the original layout.

Initially introduced as a preference on desktops to make things a little easier on the eyes, the feature has become a staple in the smartphone world for its battery saving properties – so much so that Google is now baking it into its upcoming Android Q OS at the system-level.

While appealing to look at, Twitter’s aptly dubbed “Night Mode” isn’t quite the traditional dark mode we are used to today, with its tones of blue and grey rather than black. Fortunately, the social media site has heard the cries for an even darker mode, allowing users to switch between its original “dim” night mode and one that completely turns the “lights out.”

To enable the feature on mobile, users will have to head into their ‘settings and privacy’ menu and then navigate to ‘display and sound’.  Once night mode has been switched on, it will default to the dim mode that users are currently accustomed to but another option called “lights out” can be seen directly below.

Twitter has announced that it will be rolling out the new option today, but its release seems to be staggered per country and/or per device. Currently it doesn’t seem to be available on the latest alpha 68 version, but it will eventually make its way to everyone.

KitGuru Says: If you’re frequently on the go and rely on Twitter, this will be a saviour to many, even if it might be a difficult transition over. I always prefer the darkest of modes, so this is certainly welcomed by me. On sites that do offer the choice, what mode do you usually prefer?

Given that a number of social media sites allow users to edit their original post, it’s easy to see why Twitter users continue to clamour for the same feature. Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey maintains the company’s stance against an ‘edit’ button, but is reportedly considering the option to “clarify” previous statements.

The lack of an edit button has been the point of frustration for many Twitter users that want to fix typos or correct something that went wrong in the original tweet. Sadly, the function can also be used to change context entirely, which is something the social media platform has staunchly avoided.

Instead of full-blown editing, Dorsey revealed that the company is considering giving users the ability to “clarify” earlier posts. While this will do nothing to help people retroactively use the correct there, their or they’re, it will potentially give twitter users the means to add context to reply after the original post has been deleted.

twitterrevenue.jpg

“How do we enable people to quickly go back or to any tweet, whether it be years back or today, and show that original tweet — kind of like a quote retweet, a retweet with comment — and to add some context and some colour on what they might have tweeted or what they might have meant?” Dorsey asked at the February 14 Goldman Sachs event, according to Recode.

”By doing so you might imagine that the original tweet then would not have the sort of engagement around it. Like you wouldn’t be able to retweet the original tweet, for instance. You would just show the clarification, you would be able to retweet the clarification, so it always carries around with it that context. That’s one approach.”

Of course, these proposed annotations are merely a thought at this stage, with Dorsey clarifying that he was “not saying that we are going to launch that but those are the sorts of questions we are going to ask.” It could prove incredibly useful in a number of reasons, such as adding perspective to the infamous tweets that have seen celebrities fired years later or explaining debatably unprofessional posts in the name of competition.

KitGuru Says: I can see why Twitter would shy away from an edit button to an extent, but with the ability to delete tweets I don’t believe forgoing the feature avoids all that much controversy. Still, if this clarification system is implemented, it will surely be better than nothing.

YouTube’s marketing team took to Twitter on December 25, using a popular e-card to celebrate the holidays with its 71.1 million followers. Sadly, the Christmas spirit was marred with criticism after the platform “forgot” to give credit to the creator of the video.

The tweet found itself flooded with fans of domino artist Lily Hevesh, known as Hevesh5 to her 2.1 million YouTube subscribers, asking the platform where her credit was for the lifted video. Hevesh commended the use of sharing around the holiday time, but expressed that she was “a bit disappointed” that YouTube would be among the masses that continuously “rip off” her work.

YouTube doesn’t actually have to give credit, as its terms of service mean that video uploads grant the platform a “worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, sublicenseable and transferable license to use, reproduce, distribute, prepare derivative works of, display, and perform the Content in connection with the Service and YouTube’s (and its successors’ and affiliates’) business.” Nonetheless, it sets an awful precedent on a social network that regularly sees the work of content creators taken and re-distributed without proper credit.

Although YouTube forwent any form of apology, it took to Twitter once again on December 26 to offer a correction. “Our mistake–we forgot to credit @Hevesh5 for this video! Check out more of Hevesh5's epic domino art here,” reads the tweet. The original post remains live, with a substantially higher number of views in comparison to the video that was taken, with 668,000 in comparison to 79,000 at the time of writing.

KitGuru Says: Honest mistakes can happen, with Hevesh seemingly approaching the situation in a forgiving manner. Hopefully the added publicity acts as a boon for Hevesh’s work and YouTube enforces a stronger message to its community on how to properly share videos moving forward. How do you feel about YouTube’s rectification?

Twitter sparked some concerns last month, when it was revealed that many identified political manipulators from 2016's presidential elections were still active on the platform. Fortunately, the social media site has pulled no punches in the lead up to tomorrow’s US midterm elections, removing as many as 10,000 propagators discouraging Democratic voters.

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) has been cracking down on malicious political play within social media platforms ever since the Cambridge Analytica fiasco saw widespread Russian influence during a US presidential election. Three separate sources went on to confirm to Reuters that at least 10,000 Twitter accounts had already been removed in collaboration with the DCCC, for impersonating officials and targeting democratic voters.

“For the election this year we have established open lines of communication and direct, easy escalation paths for state election officials, DHS, and campaign organizations from both major parties,” Twitter said in a separate statement. “We removed a series of accounts for engaging in attempts to share disinformation in an automated fashion — a violation of our policies. We stopped this quickly and at its source.”

The majority of the 10,000 were culled between September and October, a vastly smaller number than Twitter’s claimed 70 million accounts suspended between May and June, but still a formidable last ditch effort. Still, with an array of tools to combat political propaganda and Facebook doing the same, it looks as though tomorrow’s US midterm elections are distinctly safer than 2016’s presidential campaign.

KitGuru Says: While a commendable effort on behalf of Twitter and Facebook, the amount of time it has taken to get to this stage means that the air of distrust is unlikely to shift any time soon. It’s encouraged that voters be vigilant as they traverse the internet in the run up to any local election, maintaining their own responsibilities.

Earlier this week, video game developers took to Twitter to raise concerns surrounding working conditions in the industry. The International Game Developers Association (IGDA) has since responded to the movement, reassuring that efforts are being made to support affected professionals.

The IDGA publicly spoke out against Jessica Price’s firing from ArenaNet in July, urging publishers to provide greater clarification on social media policies – a call which seemingly went unheard with two more Riot employees shown the door in September. Now, the association has spoken out about the recent closure of studios, including Telltale games, and the subsequent #AsAGamesWorker hashtag dedicated to repairing working conditions.

“There has long been a culture of positioning game development as a ‘dream job', and using that perception as an enabler for lower pay for comparable positions, other exploitative employment practices, and even toxic work environments and harassment. Thankfully, because of tools like social media, today's game developers have a louder voice to challenge the status quo,” explains IGDA executive director Jen MacLean in a statement to GamesIndustry.biz.

“We at the IGDA recognise this problem and last year refocused our mission to support game developers around the world in sustainable, fulfilling careers. We'll continue to work towards that goal by offering events like the Virtual Mentor Cafe to help developers who have been laid off, sharing resources like our Sustainability Best Practices white paper, and hosting forums like the Leadership Summit that help game developers of all disciplines grow their management and leadership skills.”

Fortunately, the IGDA isn’t alone in its efforts to lend a helping hand, as both #AsAGamesWorker and #TelltaleJobs have afforded numerous job opportunities. This provides a distinctly short term solution that sadly won’t reach everyone affected, but minimalises the damage from the fallout as much as possible. Hopefully this sets a precedent for how companies should move forward.

KitGuru Says: For all of the disappointment caused in the sudden studio closures, the video game community has shown an outpour of love in the following months, highlighting points that otherwise flew under the radar. Our thoughts go out to those affected, hoping that change comes soon.

Social media sites vowed to crack down on fake news and propaganda last year, after it was revealed that platforms had been utilised to manipulate voters during the 2016 US presidential election. Unfortunately, researchers claim that the majority of identified propagators are still active on Twitter, causing worry just weeks before the US midterm elections.

Alongside Facebook, Twitter’s status as a leading social media platform made it a prime candidate for sowing mistruths, particularly given its relatively open nature towards privacy. Researchers at the Knight Foundation conducted “one of the largest analyses to date” on how the platform was used to disseminate false information.

The foundation highlights claims from social media heads that quashing fake news is “a game of whack-a-mole,” stating that the almost all fake news outlets that dominated during the 2016 election are still active. Studying “more than 10 million tweets from 700,000 Twitter accounts that linked to more than 600 fake and conspiracy news outlets,” the Knight Foundation discovered that “more than 80 percent of the disinformation accounts in our election maps are still active.”

twitterphone2.jpg

6.6 million of those tweets linked to third-party sites dedicated to disinformation in the month prior to the election, while another 4 million appeared during. It is suggested that history could potentially repeat itself, given that we are just weeks away from the US midterm elections.

Contrary to popular belief, the Knight Foundation points out that coordinated use of fake news as a strategy was not solely adopted by the Conservative or Republican parties, as there was a substantial Liberal and Democratic influence during 2016. Since then, these accounts have become “more ostensibly Republican since.”

Aggressive action against fake news sites has been proven to work after fake news site The Real Strategy was deleted and banned from both Twitter and Reddit, alongside a purge of supportive bots. “The postelection sample showed only 1,534 tweets to The Real Strategy, a drop of 99.8 percent. This example suggests that aggressive action against fake news outlets can be effective at containing the spread of fake news.”

While Twitter seems to be twiddling its thumbs at the prospect of widespread action against identified accounts, it’s perhaps better for US citizens to discredit all political news shared on the platform until the election is over.

KitGuru Says: Although Twitter has a responsibility to protect its user base from fake news, the best course of action is to remain vigilant by questioning everything you hear. It’s surprising that the platform hasn’t taken much action, but hopefully this will change before the elections come in full force.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey was grilled by the House Energy and Commerce Committee yesterday, in an attempt by Congress to further investigate election interference on social media. In particular, Twitter has repeatedly been criticised for showing liberal bias, something which Dorsey adamantly denies.

Over the years, Twitter has battled against accusations that it is biased against conservatives, with many prominent members of the Republican party claiming to suffer from a ‘shadow ban’ from the platform. To clarify, shadow banning is the term given to the practice of limiting a user’s post reach, as well as quietly bumping them down within search results to minimalise their presence. Republican members of Congress used their alone time with Dorsey to address the matter head on.

In an attempt to remain transparent about Twitter’s algorithm, Dorsey outright denies that he or his employees have implemented such a practice. “When people follow you, you’ve earned that audience. And we have a responsibility to make sure they can see your tweets,” he explains. “We do not have a responsibility, nor you a right, to amplify your tweets to audiences that don’t follow you.”

Democratic members of the House committee criticised the inquiry as a waste of time, with Rep. Frank Pallone highlighting Donald Trump’s overwhelming presence on the platform. “It’s the height of hypocrisy to criticize Twitter for its supposed liberal bias, when President Trump uses the platform every day for his juvenile tweets.”

In the case of Ronna McDaniel, Jim Jordan and Matt Gaetz, who were all affected by shadow banning according to Vice, Dorsey explained that this was the result of a botched algorithm detecting bad behaviour from their followers causing the lack of search auto-population, not the political views. Changes have since been made to help ensure that the same thing doesn’t happen again.

Beyond the tit for tat between the two parties, Dorsey acknowledged that Twitter has a long way to go to fix its platform. Alongside remaining impartial and enforcing its rules, he revealed that he thinks the terms it does display are confusing and need clarification.

Another point of interest is Twitter’s verification process, as it displays a blue tick symbol next to those who have confirmed who they are. This has been inaccessible to the public since February with Dorsey stating that the program “is not where we'd like it to be.” Eventually, Twitter aimed to make this accessible to everyone, alongside those in the public eye that previously met the requirements, such as celebrities and journalists, however the revised system has yet to receive a release window.

KitGuru Says: It’s good to see more than just Facebook get tough love from Congress, as Dorsey was also joined by Google in a previous grilling. It’s the responsibility of all social media heads to stomp out election interference and bias.

Twitter has had a very public problem when it comes to spam, bots, and various other types of platform abuse. Twitter is now looking to crack down on these issues with added API restrictions to make sure only legitimate developers are using its tools.

Twitter is in the process of introducing tougher API restrictions in order to stamp out spam and bot accounts. Going forward, developers will need to register on Twitter's development portal for access, they will then need to submit details on how they plan on using the API. Applications without sufficient information will be put on hold until the required information is submitted.

Twitter is also planning to implement limits on the number of times you can tweet, retweet, like or send Direct Messages. A maximum of 300 tweets and retweets can be made every three hours. Users can send 15,000 DMs or like 1,000 tweets every 24 hours.

Twitter is also planning to implement a report function for ‘bad apps' that break the site's terms of service. Twitter has already brought the hammer down on over 140,000 dodgy apps, so the report function should help moderators stamp out spam services faster.

KitGuru Says: It’s good to see Twitter finally doing something substantial to crack down on spam on their service. Hopefully, it doesn’t disrupt legitimate developers too much in the process. Do you welcome these new changes by Twitter?
