MSI has slashed prices on a number of gaming monitors this March. Here in the UK, the MSI MEG 342C QD-OLED monitor stands out in particular, offering excellent specs, with £500 chopped off its usual price tag.

QD-OLED displays have plenty of benefits, including excellent contrast and colour accuracy, HDR performance and high refresh rates with minimal response times. If you've been wanting to pick one up but winced at the previous £1000+ price tags, then you'll be pleased to know that the MSI MEG 342C QD ultrawide gaming monitor is now down to £799 for a limited time, complete with a three-year burn-in warranty.

If you are looking to mage the jump to 4K gaming, then the MSI MAG 323UPF offers a 32-inch IPS panel with 160Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time for £499, a saving of roughly £300 from its usual price. For gamers looking to run at QHD resolution, the MSI G274QPF-QD offers exactly that, along with a 170Hz refresh rate for just £299.

If you are trying to stick to 1080p and simply need a decent, fast monitor at a reasonable price, the MSI G255PF fits the bill, coming in at £139 with a 25-inch IPS LED display with quantum-dot layer, 180Hz refresh rate and 1ms response times.

These are just a few of the highlights we've spotted. You can find a full range of discounted MSI monitors on sale at Curry's, HERE.

KitGuru Says: I just recently made the jump to a QD-OLED monitor myself and it is without a doubt the nicest monitor I've ever had on my desk. Are you planning on picking up a new monitor this year?

Intel first debuted a ‘KS' version of its flagship chip with the Core i9-9900KS back in October 2019, and the tradition has carried on each generation since. Today, Intel unveils its latest ‘KS' chip, the Core i9-14900KS, reaching 6.2GHz speeds out of the box.

While most enthusiasts will be happy with the regular K or KF versions of Intel's 14th Gen Core i9 processor, those who value overclocking potential will likely want the KS variant. These are pre-binned Core i9 processors, meaning they have been tested to achieve higher speeds than the average chip. In the case of the Core i9-14900KS, we're looking at a 6.2GHz clock speed out of the box, but extreme overclockers may be able to push it further with more powerful cooling solutions.

Of course, getting this speed did require a TDP bump, so the Core i9-14900KS draws an extra 25W of power compared to the K or KF variants. 6.2GHz is also the max boost clock, which applies to P-cores and not E-cores. It might be possible to push all of your cores to higher speeds, but you will need to tinker around in the BIOS overclocking menus to see what results you can get.

The Intel i9-14900KS is available starting today in the US, priced at $699. Here in the UK, we're looking at a £689.99 price tag.

We already knew that Helldivers 2 has been a huge success so far. One look at the game's high concurrent player counts on Steam proves that. However, the story has gotten all the more impressive this week, with Helldivers 2 being crowned as the best-selling game in the UK.

In February 2024, which was the launch month for Helldivers 2, the game reached the top of sales charts in the UK, according to data from GSD, as shared by GI.biz. The game first launched on the 8th of February and in the three weeks that followed, the game continued to outsell competing titles like EA FC 24, Call of Duty, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Skull and Bones, Persona 3 Reload and more.

Overall, UK gamers bought up around 2.77 million video games over the course of the month. Impressively, Helldivers 2 achieved the rare feat of seeing sales growth week to week, meaning good word of mouth about the game boosted sales after the initial launch period, which is usually when the most copies of any game are sold.

With this hot start, Arrowhead is in a good position to solidify a position in the ‘live' shooter arena, a very competitive one usually dominated by a few large IP, like Call of Duty, Fortnite, Apex Legends and others.

KitGuru Says: I've been playing a lot of Helldivers 2 over the last couple of weeks. We're on the verge of liberating the final planet required to unlock mech suits, and a new Warbond is coming in March, so it looks like my time in the game isn't going to slow down anytime soon.

AMD and its partners have recently expanded the availability of the RX 7900 GRE. Originally launched as an exclusive GPU for the Chinese market, AMD is now launching the RX 7900 GRE via system integrators in other markets. Following the launch into European retailers, the card has arrived in the UK, with reports claiming the US is coming next.

As noted by TechPowerUp, the XFX reference design Radeon RX 7900 GRE is the first model to be available in the UK (now sold out). Priced at £659.99, the card may not be considered a fantastic value, especially since the RX 7900 XT is currently available for £699.

In other news, US retailers also plan to sell the Radeon RX 7900 GRE. According to VideoCardz, the Gigabyte RX 7900 GRE variant is expected to be available in the US later this month. Moreover, AMD announced that the RX 7900 GRE will be available for $549.

Sitting between the RX 7900 XT and the RX 7800 XT, the AMD RX 7900 GRE has more cores than its Navi 32-based sibling but packs the same amount of memory (16GB GDDR6). However, note that the Radeon RX 7900 GRE memory is running at 18Gbps instead of 19.5Gbps.

After a very lengthy marketing period, the much anticipated Tekken 8 is finally out in the world for all to enjoy. It seems as though the game has found a strong audience straight from the get-go, as physical sales of the game in the UK have more than doubled that of its closest competition: Street Fighter 6.

Following the game’s initial launch period which began on the 25th of January, it seems as though Tekken 8 has managed to surpass expectations, with Gamesindustry.biz’ Christopher Dring taking to Twitter to say:

“Last year I was surprised at how low Street Fighter 6’s UK sales were at physical retail (it did fine digitally). I wondered if it was a genre trend, but Tekken 8’s UK physical sales are good, and more than double the launch of SF6. So… who knows? Maybe it was the competition.”

As mentioned by Dring, Street Fighter 6 sold well even at launch, but the game’s retail presence seems to have left quite a bit to be desired. It is therefore interesting to see just how much more successful Tekken 8 has been at retail – especially since the game was delayed out of 2023 in order to not clash with Street Fighter 6. It seems as though the decision to internally delay the game to a more quiet period has worked.

With Tekken 7 selling over 10 million copies, it will be interesting to see just how many units Bandai Namco are able to push with its successor in just one year.

Back in 2012, video games took the top spot in the UK when it came to ranking the biggest entertainment mediums by revenue. In the decade since, gaming has remained consistently at the top…until now, with video content officially surpassing gaming as the biggest entertainment medium in the UK.

As reported by Gamesindustry.biz, the trade body representing video, music and games retailers in the UK – ERA – released their latest figures, revealing that for the first time in over a decade, video games are no longer at the top spot.

With a 2.9% increase year-over-year, the UK’s video games industry amassed a total revenue of £4.74 Billion across PC, mobile and consoles in 2023. While an impressive amount with a healthy level of growth, the video industry saw a huge spike in 2023, growing by a whopping 10% to £4.9 Billion.

According to ERA, the reason for such a high growth in video was thanks to subscription services like Netflix, Disney Plus and Apple TV – with subscription revenue said to account for 89% of the video market.

As mentioned, this marks the first time since 2012 that video games have not been at the top of the leaderboard. It will be interesting to see whether this trend will continue for years to come – or if video games will once again reclaim the top spot in 2024. We will have to wait and see.

The Xbox Series X is three years old now, which means we're finally starting to see meaningful holiday season sales for the system. For Black Friday this year, Microsoft has slashed the price of the Xbox Series X on Amazon, bringing it down from £480 to £359.

Unfortunately, you won't be able to get Prime delivery, as Amazon has swiftly sold out of its available stock, but more are on the way. You can still add the console to your basket at its deal price of £359, but it may not arrive for a couple of weeks. Considering how close we are to Christmas, we'd expect the backlog of orders to continue growing so if this is something you want to get your hands on, you may want to act fast.

While the Xbox console doesn't really have much in the way of true game exclusives, as all first-party games now launch on PC too, the Series X does offer a great amount of power and performance for its price. You would struggle to build a gaming PC capable of 4K gaming with a similar budget.

Alternatively, the Xbox Series S can also be found at a discount at the moment, bringing the price down to £189 for the 512GB model and unlike the Series X, there is stock available with Prime Delivery.

Last year, a consumer rights campaigner spearheaded a lawsuit against Sony in the UK, seeking as much as £5 billion for ‘ripping off' gamers in the UK with inflated prices on the PlayStation Store. As you would expect, Sony argued against the lawsuit, hoping to get it thrown out but now, a judge has ruled that the case can proceed.

The lawsuit, filed by plaintiff Alex Neill on behalf of millions of UK PlayStation customers, claims that Sony forces excessive prices for games on PlayStation in the UK and points to this as a clear abuse of the company's market position. It is claimed that inflated prices started going into effect from 2016 onwards for digital games and add-ons sold via the PlayStation Store and the lawsuit also takes issue with the 30 percent cut Sony takes for game sales on its platform.

It is worth noting that plenty of other digital platform holders also take a 30 percent cut on digital sales, although these platform taxes have come under a lot of scrutiny in recent years. Most of the uproar has focused on services like Steam on PC, which did make changes to its platform revenue split, as well as mobile stores like the iOS App Store and the Google Play Store on Android.

The reason the lawsuit only accounts for 2016 onwards is due to the fact that it relies on the UK's Consumer Rights Act 2015. Sony's lawyers claimed the lawsuit was flawed from start to finish but now as reported by VGC, the Competitions Appeal Tribunal has ruled that the lawsuit can go forward to trial and won't be thrown out.

A trial date has not yet been set so this will be a lengthy process. If successful, around 8.9 million UK gamers could claim money back based on purchases made on the PlayStation Store between August 2016 and August 2022.

KitGuru Says: We don't hear about many class action lawsuits like this in the UK, although it is much more common to hear about US-based legal battles. We should get more updates on this in 2024, as both sides prepare to go to trial, assuming a settlement isn't reached before then.

Black Friday sales have arrived in force, with most major stores now offering big discounts on all things tech. Here, we break down some of the best gaming peripheral deals we've spotted so far, including mechanical keyboards, mice and headsets. If you are looking for a fresh upgrade – we have you covered at all budget points.

We're kicking things off with keyboards, starting off with high-end options and working our way to more wallet-friendly options. If you have over £200 to spend on a new mechanical keyboard, then there are solid options from Corsair and Razer.

The Corsair K100 AIR RGB with Slipstream Wireless technology and Cherry MX Ultra Low profile switches. This keyboard is currently just under 20% off, bringing the price down from £279.99 to £229.99.

The Razer BlackWidow V4 Pro keycap bundle offers good value. For a discounted price of £217.99, you can get the BlackWidow V4 Pro mechanical keyboard with Razer's own tactile mechanical switches, as well as a set of upgraded PBT keycaps. Personally, I would use this as a longevity booster, wearing out the first set of keycaps before turning back the clock by giving the keyboard a clean and putting the fresh set of keycaps on to get the keyboard looking good as new.

For those with up to £200 to spend, there are several popular options. The Corsair K70 MAX RGB with adjustable-actuation switches is currently down to £176.39. The Razer BlackWidow V3 Pro with Razer Green Switches and Chroma RGB lighting is down from £229.99 to £177.99.

The Alienware Tri-Mode wireless gaming keyboard with AlienFX RGB lighting and Cherry MX Red switches is down from £249.99 to £174.99. If you prefer a TKL option, the SteelSeries Apex Pro offers an OLED panel, USB-C connection and adjustable-actuation switches for £169.99.

Moving below the £150 mark, we find the Corsair K70 RGB MK.2 at £139.99, the SteelSeries Apex Pro Mini (60% keyboard) at £129, the Razer Huntsman V2 with Optical switches at £130.99, the Logitech G915 Lightspeed with low-profile switches at £125, the Razer BlackWidow V3 at £103.48 and finally, the Corsair K70 RGB TKL at £104.99.

Usually $150, the brand new Arbiter Studio Polar 65 is now 30% off, bringing the price down to $105 for all colour combinations, including Ronin Red, Kumo Blue, Jedi Green, Midnight Lilac, Silver Lilac and Silver Panda.

You don't necessarily have to spend more than £100 to get a solid and reliable keyboard for gaming. There are plenty of solid options in the £50 to £80 range too.

Starting off at the top, we have the NZXT Function Mechanical Keyboard with hot-swappable switches at £80.70. Thanks to the hot-swap design, you can easily replace the switch to any mechanical switch you prefer at any point in time – including Cherry MX switches. At a similar price point, you can find the MSI Vigor GK71 with full RGB and media keys for £79.99. The TKL version of the Razer BlackWidow V3 can be found for £75.49.

The MSI GK50 low-profile TKL mechanical keyboard with clicky switches can be found for £59.99 and would look right at home in a gaming setup with per-key RGB lighting. The Razer Ornata V3 also offers low-profile switches but uses ‘mecha-membrane' switches instead, alongside full Razer Chroma RGB lighting.

At 47 percent off, the HyperX Alloy Origins Core keyboard offers a space-friendly tenkeyless (TKL) layout and RGB lighting with HyperX Red switches for £52.99. For a full-size option, you can find the Corsair K55 RGB PRO XT wired membrane keyboard at £49.99.

In this section, we cover gaming mice, including high-end to budget options.

As we saw with keyboards, Razer has some nice mouse bundles as well, with several higher-end options coming with a Goliathus Chroma RGB mouse pad with wireless charging capabilities so you can keep your mouse constantly topped up during use.

At 20% off, the Razer Naga V2 Pro and Goliathus Chroma bundle comes in at £173.99. The Naga is an excellent option for MMO gamers in particular thanks to its additional programmable side buttons. On its own, the Naga V2 Pro costs £149.

At £160.96, you can nab a Razer Basilisk V3 Pro with a Goliathus Chroma RGB mouse pad, offering a comfortable shape for palm grip gamers with fewer side buttons to obstruct your thumb. On its own, the Basilisk V3 Pro costs £135.99.

For a lower-profile option, the Razer Cobra Pro mouse with Goliathus Chroma mouse pad can be found for £143.99. If you are a fan of the tried and true DeathAdder mouse, then for £140.63, you can get to the DeathAdder V3 Pro with Goliathus Chroma mouse pad.

At around the £105 mark, you can find the Corsair Nightsabre RGB wireless MOBA gaming mouse with up to 100-hour battery life, or the Razer Viper V2 Pro Wireless esports gaming mouse.

Corsair's alternative to the Razer Naga, the SCIMITAR ELITE RGB Wireless MMO gaming mouse with up to 150 hours of battery life can be found for £99.98 with a similar side key layout with lots of reprogrammable buttons.

The Razer Viper Ultimate with its charging dock can be found for £90.89, with a 20K optical sensor and Chroma lighting. The Logitech G Pro X Superlight is another great lightweight wireless option in the sub-£100 bracket, offering up to 70 hours of battery life at £89.90. However, if you prefer a claw-grip style mouse, the Corsair M65 RGB Ultra Wireless with up to 120 hours of battery life offers very good specs at £79.99. For a palm grip option, Corsair has the Dark Core RGB Pro SE gaming mouse at £69.99 with Qi Wireless Charging capabilities.

The SteelSeries Aerox 5 Wireless gaming mouse offers a honeycomb shell for lightweight and swift movements for FPS games at £62.99. Alienware's AW620M is more suited for palm grip at that same £62.99 price point.

HyperX has its own honeycomb shell, ultralight mouse with lengthy battery life in the form of the HyperX Pulsefire Haste, weighing just 62g and costing £54.99 during this month's sales period. Offering a similar spec is the SteelSeries Aerox 3 for £49.99. Again, if you prefer a taller, palm-grip-suited mouse, then the Corsair Dark Core RGB Pro can be found at £49.99.

If you aren't looking for a wireless mouse, or to spend as much as £50 on a mouse, then the SteelSeries Rival 5 and NZXT Lift are both great options that fall under the £35 mark while offering RGB lighting.

At £19.99, you can grab a Trust Gaming Keyboard and mouse set, both with full RGB lighting, making for an easy and cheap way to brighten up your PC setup.

If you are looking for an audio upgrade, then there are plenty of discounts to be found there too. Everyone needs a gaming headset for reliable comms with teammates in multiplayer games, or for quietly playing through single-player titles.

At the high-end, Razer's bundle options feature again, offering a headset, alongside an RGB Chroma-lit headphone hangar for your desk to keep your headphones tucked away when not in use. The Razer Barracuda Pro wireless with base station is down from £319.98 to £270.99, the BlackShark V2 Pro with base station is down to £228.99 and the ever-popular Kraken V3 Pro with base station is down to £228.99 as well.

SteelSeries also has some great options in the high-end, including the Arctis Nova Pro Wireless, now down to £268.99 (18% off) and the Arctis Pro Wireless at £199.99.

Moving into the below £200 bracket, the Corsair Virtuoso RGB Wireless XT offers Dolby Atmos, Bluetooth audio and multi-platform support for £184.99. At that same price point, you can also find the Logitech G Astro A30 Lightspeed.

If you don't mind giving up features like Dolby Atmos support out of the box, then the standard Corsair Virtuoso RGB Wireless can be found at £149.99. Another step below that, at £134.99, you could nab the latest HyperX Cloud III Wireless gaming headset.

The Steel Series Arctis Pro with GameDAC offers a high-fidelity wired option at the £124.99 price point – a 50% saving over its RRP. If you want a wireless headset for that kind of money, then the standard Razer Barracuda Wireless with USB-C charging can be found for £118.99.

At closer to the £100 mark, the Logitech G Pro X Wireless and Corsair HS80 RGB Wireless can both be found for £109 during the sales period.

You don't have to spend over £100 to get reliable gaming audio. There are plenty of more affordable options well below the £100 mark, including the base model Razer Barracuda X Wireless, offering multiplatform support, USB-C charging and 40mm drivers at £82.99. The wired version of the HyperX Cloud III can be found for £79.99. Corsair's comparable HS80 RGB wired headset can be found at £69.99.

If you would rather have a wireless headset at £60 or less, the Corsair HS55 Wireless Core offers exactly that, with 2.4GHz wireless and Bluetooth, as well as support for 3D Audio on the PS5, for £59.99. However, if you don't mind trading down to a wired model with Dolby Surround support out of the box, then the Corsair HS65 Surround might be the way to go at £54.98.

At £34.99, you can find the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 1 and Corsair HS35 wired gaming headsets. Logitech's most comparable option is the Logitech G432 Wired Gaming Headset at £38.50 with its generously large ear cups. Finally, the Trust Gaming GXT 391 Thian is built using environmentally sustainable materials and offers wireless audio at just £39.99.

Earlier this month, reports claimed that Microsoft would obtain UK approval for its Activision Blizzard deal this week, with plans to close as soon as this coming Friday. However, given that the deal was tweaked after obtaining EU approval for the old deal, there have been questions as to whether the restructured transaction would have to go through a new approval process. According to a new source this week, that won't be the case.

Bloomberg backs up earlier claims that the deal will close very soon, with the UK apparently set to approve the acquisition in the next few days. The report also claims that the EU Commission has concluded that the changes made to the deal to appease the UK's Competition & Markets Authority won't warrant a new investigation into the deal. With that in mind, there should be no hold-ups once the CMA's decision comes through, allowing Microsoft to close the deal ahead of its contracted October 18th deadline.

The reworked deal will see Microsoft obtaining Activision Blizzard King, but the company will transfer the cloud streaming rights to those games over to Ubisoft. Under the agreement, Ubisoft will be free to sub-license those games out to any company it chooses and it will be allowed to request ports from Microsoft to support specific platforms, such as cloud services that don't rely on Windows – however, there will be fees involved with ports.

The CMA did initially block the acquisition as while Microsoft had managed to beat the console theory of harm, the CMA still held concerns over the effect of the deal on the burgeoning cloud gaming market. With Ubisoft set to take control of Activision Blizzard games in the cloud market, those concerns have been squashed.

KitGuru Says: At some point within the next week, this whole ordeal will finally come to an end. Either everything closes by the October 18th deadline (next Wednesday), or Microsoft takes a tough defeat and parts with roughly $5 billion in break-up fees with Activision.

The UK video game sales chart last week was dominated by Starfield, with Bethesda's new RPG entering the chart in the number one spot, beating out the likes of Call of Duty, NBA 2K24, FIFA and others. The game's success has also had an impact on the sales of Xbox consoles.

According to GfK tracking data, via GI.biz, Xbox Series X/S sales rose by 76 percent last week alongside Starfield's launch. The standard Xbox Series X had the biggest boost, but there has also been a good jump in the sales of Xbox Series S consoles.

According to the data, the brand-new 1TB version of the Xbox Series S accounted for around 24 percent of Xbox sales in the UK, while the Xbox Series X had a 46 percent increase in sales for the week ending on September 2nd.

We currently don't have information on how Starfield's launch has impacted Game Pass subscriptions. However, we do know that the game has already surpassed six million players, with two million of those playing during the game's early access period, which was only available to those who pre-ordered the game's Premium Edition or bought the Premium Edition upgrade on Game Pass for £34.99.

KitGuru Says: Microsoft's next earnings report will certainly be interesting, but we're still a while off from that happening. If Starfield is performing as well as they'd hoped, then we should hear about a new Game Pass milestone and increased gaming revenues.

The UK has been suffering from quite a bit of inflation over the past few years, with video game consoles and other hardware seeing price increases as a consequence. Inflation has seemingly gotten so bad that it is even impacting Fortnite’s local economy, with Epic Games increasing the price of its V-Bucks from next month.

Making the announcement on their blog, the Fortnite team detailed the price increase, saying “Following our last Pricing Alignment in 2021, we are making adjustments to V-Bucks prices and our content Packs in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Mexico starting July 17, 2023, based on economic factors like inflation and currency fluctuations.”

Previously, purchasing 1000 V-Bucks would cost you £6.49. This has now been increased to £6.99. The higher tiers – alongside Fortnite's many character packs – have also seen price hikes:

 • Intrepid Engines Pack (£3.19 > £3.49)
 • Full Clip Pack (£12.99 > £13.99)
 • 2,800 V-Bucks (£15.99 > £17.49)
 • 5,000 V-Bucks (£25.99 > £27.99)
 • 13,500 V-Bucks (£63.99 > £69.99)

While not a significant increase, the price hike means that Fortnite’s already-costly packs and character skins are now becoming even more so. Hopefully we don’t start seeing other live-service titles increasing their own ‘micro’ transactions.

The post KitGuru Games: Microsoft’s Activision Blizzard acquisition has turned into a political circus first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
At this point, many countries across the globe have approved Microsoft's planned acquisition of Activision Blizzard, including the European Commission, which worked with Microsoft on remedies to ensure continued access to Activision games for cloud gaming providers big and small all across the world, not just in Europe. However, the CMA is standing firm on its decision to block the deal, which is now drawing criticism from UK politicians. Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella, was recently asked whether the company would consider pulling products from the UK market.

Typically, it would be inconceivable to see a major company like Microsoft withdrawing from the UK and the idea would be shot down immediately. However, against the backdrop of the political landscape and the UK's struggling economy, Microsoft does have an opportunity to throw its weight around a bit here and we've seen the company take that opportunity. After the CMA initially announced its decision to block, based on cloud gaming market concerns, Activision and Microsoft execs claimed that it was a sign that the UK is “closed for business” for tech companies. Now, Microsoft's CEO, Satya Nadella, is dangling the possibility of major changes to its presence in the UK.

In an interview with CNBC, Nadella was asked “Could you ever see an age where you sell the product in the US if it was approved, sell the product in Europe, but not sell it in the UK if they did not approve it?”. Nadella replied with a smile, saying “Let's wait for it all to play out”.

If Microsoft is able to get the deal approved everywhere except for the UK, then Microsoft could theoretically make some major changes. The company currently has a huge presence in the UK, having not just its own offices with thousands of employees, but also a number of UK-based game studios under its wing. Decreasing investment in the UK and moving over to Europe would be a major blow to the UK and hurt the current government's desire to transform the country into a Silicon Valley-style tech hub. The UK has already suffered a blow in this area, as the country's biggest and most relevant chip maker, ARM, rejected offers to list on the London Stock Exchange after its deal to be acquired by Nvidia fell through. Instead, ARM is set to be listed on the US stock exchange.

Following the EU's approval of the acquisition, Activision confirmed plans to expand its investment across its European studios. In a post-Brexit world, the UK is directly competing with the EU for investment exactly like this and alarm bells have begun ringing in politicians' ears. Recently, UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, posted on LinkedIn directly addressing the CMA, expressing a desire to “steer” the regulator's direction. UK Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt, also told Reuters in an interview this week that he thinks it is “important all our regulators understand their wider responsibilities for economic growth”, directly referring to the ongoing situation with Microsoft and Activision.

It is worth noting for non-UK readers that this comes at a time when the UK economy is struggling and there are many more pressing issues that the government should be spending its time on, such as food shortages, energy prices and inflation. As a Brit myself, I feel that far more citizens care about whether or not they'll be able to cook a roast dinner next Sunday than whether or not this acquisition goes through. The fact of the matter is though, the CMA's decision here could indeed have a negative impact on the economy and its flimsy arguments against it could reflect poorly on the country in enterprising circles.

As analyst Florian Mueller points out, the acquisition has already been approved in 37 countries with a total population count 14 times higher than the UK's and with an aggregate GDP that is far higher than the UK's as well. That's a tough market proposition for Microsoft to give up on.

The CMA isn't the only regulator opposing the deal, the FTC in the US is also suing to block it but the key difference is that in the US, the FTC needs to get a court-ordered injunction and fight to block a case in a court of law. The FTC has lost many cases this way and the general consensus is that Microsoft has a good chance to beat the lawsuit. Here in the UK, the CMA is allowed to make its own decisions as an independent entity without oversight from an actual court.

Microsoft is set to appeal the CMA's ruling, which will go to a tribunal that can then direct the CMA to correct course if a successful argument is made. Given that the CMA made a number of errors in its calculations, such as counting all Game Pass subscribers as XCloud users and significantly overstating Microsoft's market share in cloud gaming, it will be interesting to see how the appeal plays out.

KitGuru Says: When I first heard that Microsoft was acquiring Activision Blizzard, at no point did I think I would be writing articles about the UK economy and high-ranking politicians, yet here we are. Hopefully, this appeal situation and the FTC case can have a quick turnaround, no matter what the outcome is, so we can get back to talking about actual video games once again.

The Xbox Series X|S has been selling pretty well in the UK. Since its launch 128 weeks ago, customers have bought over two million consoles (combining both models), making it the eighth fastest-selling console in the region.

The data comes from the analysts at GfK (via gamesindsutry.biz), who also added that the two consoles had generated a cumulative revenue of £696 million. In eighth place, the Xbox Series X|S reached the 2 million milestone faster than the original Xbox (162 weeks) and the Nintendo Switch (140 weeks). At the top of this chart, you'll see the Nintendo Wii, which hit 2 million sales in only 57 weeks. The rival PS5 console is in fourth place with 98 weeks to reach the two million sales figure.

The table below includes the top 10 fastest-selling consoles to reach 2 million sales in the UK based on GfK data:

Position Platform Release Year Launch Price Weeks to 2m Revenue at 2m
1 Nintendo Wii 2006 £180 57 £358m
2 PS2 2000 £299 60 £469m
3 PS4 2013 £375 75 £700m
4 PS5 2020 £425 98 £919m
4 PS3 2007 £420 98 £638m
5 Xbox One 2013 £450 104 £726m
6 Xbox 360 2005 £254 110 £507m
7 PlayStation 1 1995 £299 114 £179m
8 Xbox Series S and X 2020 £386 128 £696m
9 Nintendo Switch 2017 £285 140 £279m
10 Xbox 2002 £295 162 £280m

If not for the chip shortage that affected the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S during 2021 and 2022, the milestone could have been reached at a quicker pace for both Sony and Microsoft.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru says: With the PS5 being faster than the Xbox Series X|S to reach the milestone, one could argue that Sony's console is winning the race in the UK. However, the winner is only determined at the finish line. During the Wii/PS3/Xbox 360 era, the Wii was the fastest-selling console in the region, but in the end, the Xbox 360 sold slightly more units than Nintendo's console.

The post Microsoft is now offering a free global license to all cloud gaming services for Activision titles first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
We've all seen the ten-year deals Microsoft has signed with various cloud gaming companies to offer Activision titles like Call of Duty to rival cloud gaming providers. As it turns out, in order to get its acquisition of Activision Blizzard approved by the EU, Microsoft had to go a step further, offering a free global license to all cloud gaming providers.

As part of the EU's press release announcing approval of the deal, it was noted in the remedies section that Microsoft is now offering a free license to all cloud gaming services and gamers within the EEA, allowing players to stream Activision games through whatever cloud service they prefer. As it turns out, this free license is actually on offer globally, not just in Europe.

In a tweet this afternoon, Microsoft President, Brad Smith, said: “The European Commission has required Microsoft to license popular Activision Blizzard games automatically to competing cloud gaming services. This will apply globally and will empower millions of consumers worldwide to play these games on any device they choose.”

There is a caveat here – the license applies to ‘Bring your Own Game' services, like GeForce Now, where users are allowed to stream games they've already purchased on platforms like Steam, the Epic Games Store or other digital stores on PC. It does not apply to services that directly sell games through their own store, which was Google Stadia's business model. Fortunately, very few cloud gaming services operate this way and prefer to approach the market in a similar way to GeForce Now, where users can pay a subscription for access to more powerful servers and other benefits, rather than buying games directly from the cloud provider.

While the EU was satisfied with Microsoft's free, global license, available to all cloud gaming providers without exception, the UK's Competition & Markets Authority claims that the deal will allow Microsoft to “set the terms and conditions” for the cloud gaming market for the next ten years. The CMA went on to say that it stands by its initial decision.

That could eventually change. Recently, UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, announced plans to review the CMA's policies and potentially make changes. The UK government will be meeting with CMA heads this week in parliament to question them on the work the CMA is doing.

At this point, the deal is still being blocked in the UK but Microsoft and Activision are set to file an appeal. Microsoft is also preparing to take the FTC on in court over in the USA in order to push the deal through.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: If the UK government really wants the UK to become a tech hub, then it is going to have to improve its understanding of the industry and work better with companies in this space. So far, all they've managed to do is send ARM off to the US stock market and right now, both Activision and Microsoft are reevaluating investment plans for the UK and may well choose to spend more in the EU instead, simply due to more reasonable and knowledgable regulators – Activision itself is already hinting at this exact outcome

This afternoon, the European Commission officially approved Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard, noting that the remedies offered by Microsoft should be enough to do away with competition concerns. Now, the UK's Competition & Markets Authority has responded, saying it stands by its initial decision.

In a series of tweets posted in the hour or so after the EU's decision became public, the CMA says that “Microsoft's proposals accepted by the European Commission would allow Microsoft to set the terms and conditions for this [cloud gaming] market for the next 10 years”. The CMA also notes that the EU's decision would require “ongoing regulation of the games Microsoft sells, the platforms to which it sells them, and the conditions of the sale”.

Microsoft and the EU had agreed on a major remedy for the cloud gaming market, offering up a completely free license to all cloud gaming providers and gamers to play all current and future Activision games on whatever streaming service they want. While the CMA claims the deal would harm cloud competition, the EU says the exact opposite, noting that the free license would open up the cloud market and promote competition rather than harming it.

It seems to be a stark difference of opinion between the two regulators, but it is worth noting that the EU has a stronger track record when it comes to understanding and actively engaging in the tech world, while the UK government's reputation in that regard is not very good. The CMA says it stands by its decision to block the deal, but nonetheless, Microsoft and Activision will be filing appeals. Given that the CMA already made provably wrong calculations at various stages during its investigation, there is a high chance Microsoft has some good ammunition for its appeal.

KitGuru Says: Interestingly, the European Commission's press release did not make any mention of a ten-year time gate on the freely available license to streamers. This seems to be a new remedy, separate from the many 10-year deals Microsoft signed with console makers and streaming providers. With that in mind, the CMA's comments here might be flawed from the jump.

After six long years of waiting, the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is here – and it does not seem to be disappointing neither fans nor Nintendo, with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s launch being almost 3x bigger than its predecessor.

As reported by the UK-focused Gfk (and collated by Christopher Dring of Gamesindustry.biz), The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom after just two days has already managed to become the 8th best-selling Zelda game of all time in the region – having outsold Skyward Sword, The Wind Waker and A Link Between Worlds. It is worth noting that the Gfk only reports on boxed sales, making this feat especially impressive.

That is not all, as the game has also managed to achieve the second-biggest launch for Nintendo; only behind Pokemon Scarlet and Violet but 173% bigger than Breath of the Wild.

Finally, Tears of the Kingdom has already become the 4th biggest game in the franchise in terms of revenue – though this was undoubtedly aided by Tear’s of the Kingdom’s increased price.

With The Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom seeing such a strong launch, it will be interesting to see just how quickly the game rises the ranks in Nintendo’s list of best-selling Switch titles of all time.

Earlier this week, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) officially announced its decision to block Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, citing concerns around the future of the cloud gaming market. Now, some of the cloud gaming companies that Microsoft signed deals with are speaking out in favour of the deal.

The CMA has concluded that while Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard would not harm Sony's position in the console market, the acquisition would have a significant impact on the cloud gaming market – a market that doesn't really account for a meaningful chunk of the gaming market at this point in time and while there has been growth, we are still a long, long way from cloud taking over as the main source of gaming.

Microsoft saw this coming and sought to prevent this outcome by signing 10-year deals to bring Xbox first-party games and Activision Blizzard titles like Call of Duty to rival cloud gaming services. Activision so far has steered clear of supporting cloud gaming, so this change would have been a Microsoft-led one. The deals would have seen Nvidia's GeForce Now, EE, Ubitus and other cloud gaming companies gaining access to titles they otherwise would not get.

Now, some of those cloud gaming providers who were looking forward to offering games like Call of Duty are speaking out against the CMA's decision. Nvidia has the largest following of the bunch and possibly the most successful cloud gaming service in GeForce Now. In a tweet this week, Nvidia stated that it sees Microsoft's acquisition of Activision as “a benefit to cloud gaming” and calls for a “positive resolution” to the situation.

Similarly, cloud gaming provider Boosteroid also tweeted out against the CMA's decision, saying that its position on the issue “is in line” with Microsoft's.

Microsoft and Activision have both separately stated that they are still committed to the deal and will appeal the CMA's decision. Microsoft went as far as to call the CMA's move “bad for Britain” while an Activision spokesperson said that the move shows that the UK is “closed for business”.

KitGuru Says: The CMA's move to block the deal is a setback but Microsoft hopes to power through. Depending on how long the appeals process takes, the completion of the deal could end up being pushed to 2024.

Due to a whole host of factors, when the PlayStation 5 was first released in late 2020, it suffered from a great deal of stock shortages – putting a heavy hamper on the system’s sales. Finally, in January Sony claimed that 2023 would be the year when the PS5 no longer suffers from stock issues. It seems this is indeed the case, as February’s sales have shown Sony’s console up by over 300% year-on-year.

As reported by Gamesindustry.biz, 2023 looks set to be a huge year for Sony as the PlayStation 5 has been selling like hotcakes ever since the console saw its stock shortages reduced. January saw the system increase its sales by 202% compared to January of last year. February has seen the console reach even higher highs as in the UK the PS5 saw a huge increase in sales of 316% compared to this time last year.

January was not a great month for Xbox, however this is improving somewhat with February’s console sales being up 15% compared to February 2022. The Nintendo Switch meanwhile did not see such growth, with the console sales dropping by 29% compared to this time last year. Of course, the Nintendo Switch is nearing its end-of-life and so this slowdown does make sense.

When Sony said that more PS5s would be available this year, it seems as though they really meant it. With two straight months of huge growth, it will be highly interesting to see how many units are sold by the end of the year.

As anticipated, the UK's Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) has confirmed that it believes Microsoft's proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard would harm the UK market. The CMA confirmed its concerns in documents released today, but it has also sent a list of potential remedies to Microsoft.

The CMA has concluded its investigation into the deal, finding that if allowed to go through uncontested, it “could result in higher prices, fewer choices, or less innovation”. It is important to note that this part of the decision does not take into account Microsoft's proposed ten-year deal to keep Call of Duty on multiple platforms, from PlayStation, to Steam and even Nintendo consoles. However, Microsoft's planned license deal will be taken into account when discussing remedies.

Aside from all of the Call of Duty drama, the CMA has concerns that Microsoft's acquisition could help it obtain an unmatchable position in the cloud market.

As far as potential remedies go, the CMA has suggested that Microsoft partially divest in Activision by selling off Call of Duty, or the entire company. These remedies are unlikely to be palatable to Microsoft, but it may be able to find a way to convince regulators with less extreme measures.

The CMA's final report on this matter should arrive by the 26th of April.

KitGuru Says: It looks like talks with regulators are finally reaching a conclusion point. Microsoft claims it is still confident in the acquisition, but as we saw with Nvidia's failed Arm acquisition, companies will continue to preach confidence in the face of mounting adversity, right up until regulator talks reach a final breaking point.

Over the past couple years we have seen the adoption of digital games balloon into quickly becoming the leading way in which people choose to purchase the media. Over time the ratio has skewed further and further towards digital – with a new report revealing that almost 90% of all game sales in the UK in 2022 were digital.

As reported by the Digital Entertainment and Retail Association – and shared by the BBC – 89.5% of all games sold in 2022 in the UK were digital, meaning just 10.5% of games were sold physically.

This is a major departure from just a few years ago, when the ratio was much closer to a 50-50 split. Going back even further will see digital media be nothing but a blip on the radar of gaming. As such, it is truly interesting to see just how quickly the industry has flipped on its head in this aspect.

It is worth noting that these results do include mobile gaming – which is essentially all-digital – and so contributes 30% to the figure. Still, there is no denying that physical media is becoming much less of a factor in gaming.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes for consoles to follow in the footsteps of the PC market, pretty much getting rid of physical media entirely.

While the UK's Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) was conducting its initial investigation into Microsoft's acquisition of Activision, the floor was opened up for the public to send in comments about the deal. The results of those comments have now been revealed, with around 75 percent of respondents being in favour of the deal.

There were around 2,600 emails sent to the CMA during this stage, but 500 of those emails were thrown out as some emails were blank, others contained abusive content and others were from non-UK consumers or weren't written in English. The final batch of around 2100 emails were then analysed to get a broad sense of why some approve the deal and others do not.

In the document (via GI.biz), the CMA outlines the reasons UK consumers were either for or against the deal:

For the deal –

 • Sony and Nintendo are stronger than Microsoft in console gaming, and the Merger will help Microsoft to compete more closely against them
 • Microsoft would not make Activision's content exclusive to Xbox post-Merger because it would lose significant potential revenue from rival platforms
 • The Merger is a reaction to Sony's business model for PlayStation, which has historically involved securing exclusive content or early access to popular cross-platform gaming franchises, such as Final Fantasy and Silent Hill
 • The Merger will allow Microsoft to provide Activision with better guidance and leadership, and to encourage it to invest more in games other than Call of Duty

Against the deal –

 • The Merger would lead to consolidation and would set a harmful precedent in the gaming industry of acquiring large publishers rather than encouraging organic growth
 • Microsoft will make Call of Duty exclusive to Xbox, just as it did with Bethesda after it acquired ZeniMax Media
 • Microsoft can capture the multi-game subscription market after the Merger because it can afford to add games to Game Pass at a loss
 • Microsoft is already dominant in cloud gaming, and the Merger could affect the future of new entrants into that space

While some doubt Microsoft's promise to keep Call of Duty multiplatform, the majority of respondents feel that the company will stay true to its word, in part due to the fact that it is a multiplayer game with cross-platform capabilities. The majority also see Call of Duty on Game Pass as a win for consumers, while others are concerned that Microsoft's ability to add major titles to its subscription service will harm competition.

The CMA is still conducting its investigation into the deal, and Microsoft is also still working with the EU Commission to get the deal approved too. Over in the US, the FTC has filed a lawsuit in an effort to block the deal, but both Microsoft and Activision spokespeople have confirmed they intend to fight for the merger and won't back down from the FTC's legal challenge.

2022 has been a major year for games, with the likes of Elden Ring, COD MWII and more launching to record-breaking success. Despite this, Pokémon somehow continues to reign supreme, with the controversial Scarlet/Violet having the biggest game launch of 2022 in the UK.

As reported by GfK and collated by Gamesindustry.biz, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet managed to achieve the highest launch sales of any boxed game in the UK in 2022, surpassing the previous record holder (FIFA 23) by 4%.

That is not all however, as Scarlet/Violet has also surpassed almost all previously released Pokémon games, with 2016’s Sun and Moon being the sole title to outperform it at launch. Interestingly when accounting for the revenue generated, Scarlet/Violet manages to take the top spot thanks to its higher retail price (£48 compared to £35 for Sun/Moon).

Perhaps most surprising is the fact that Scarlet and Violet’s launch sales were 56% greater than that of Pokémon Legends Arceus – despite the latter being much more well-received by both critics and fans.

With all that said, it is worth noting that these figures only account for physical sales, meaning the true scale of Scarlet/Violet’s success is currently unknown – though considering the fact that digital sales are increasing year-on-year it would not be surprising to see the title having performed even better when also accounting for it. We will have to wait and see.

Following on from launch-day reviews yesterday, today the RTX 4080 graphics card officially becomes available to the public. The first retail listings have gone live and so far, the UK pricing situation is an interesting one, with custom cards starting at close to £1300, with the higher-end models going for £1650.

A lot of board partner cards with custom coolers are going to come in more expensive than Nvidia's Founders Edition, as is often the case. Some cards will be priced much higher, breaking into RTX 4090 price territory. For reference, an entry-level custom RTX 4090 starts at £1,699. With that in mind, paying £1,650 for a high-end custom RTX 4080 is very expensive. Nvidia continues to have the cheapest option with the Founders Edition, which starts at £1269 for the RTX 4080 and £1699 for the RTX 4090.

Taking a look at Overclockers UK, we can see plenty of custom RTX 4080 cards available at launch. The cheapest are the Gainward RTX 4080 Phantom and Palit RTX 4080 GameRock OmniBlack cards, coming in at £1,299.95. Moving up from there, we get the Zotax RTX 4080 Trinity at £1,328.99 and the Palit RTX 4080 GameRock for £1,349.99.

The Gigabyte Eagle RTX 4080 sits at £1,379.99 and the Asus TUF RTX 4080 is launching at £1,439.99. Finally, we have the top-end cards, the Asus RTX 4080 Strix and the MSI RTX 4080 Suprim X, which cost £1,649.99 and £1,589.99 respectively. Finally, there is one custom liquid-cooling option available so far – the Inno3D RTX 4080 iChill Frostbite ships with a preinstalled water block on the card for easy and quick installation into a custom cooling loop.

It has been a few days since God of War Ragnarok officially launched for PlayStation consoles. In less than a week, the game has gone on to beat launch-week sales of all previous titles in the series and has become the fourth God of War title to top the UK charts.

The latest GfK physical game sales charts have been shared by GI.biz. God of War Ragnarok is the 13th game of the series to release in the UK territory and the fourth title to top the launch week sales chart. The other three were God of War 2, God of War 3, and God of War (2018). However, you should note Ragnarok is the first cross-gen launch game for the series as well.

According to GfK boss. Dorian Bloch. “day 1 physical sales were already greater than any other full-week launch sales for other titles in this franchise.” He also noted that this week, 55% of PS5 console sales were God of War bundles.

The achievement is not surprising considering how well the game has scored in reviews. On OpenCritic, the game has a 94% score with 98% recommendation. On Metacritic reviewer and user scores are also pretty good, sitting at 9.4 and 8.3, respectively.

We're still over two weeks away from the release of the RTX 4080 graphics cards, but some UK retailers have begun listing the new graphics card, giving us an early look at pricing. As things currently stand, it looks like the cheapest RTX 4080 graphics card will hit the market at £1,289.

VideoCardz found three Palit graphics cards on Laptop Direct. The cheapest model is the Palit GeForce RTX 4080 OmniBlack 16GB, available for order at £1,449.97. The next one in line is the Palit GeForce RTX 4080 GameRock 16GB for £1,499.97, followed by the OC variant for £1,529.97. Overall, that's quite a bit higher than the GPU's MSRP in the UK, set at £1,269.

However, we dug a little deeper to see if we could find any more listings, which we kind of did. Using PriceSpy, a well-known price comparison tool, we found that two RTX 4080 16GB were listed at unknown retailers in October. The first was the PNY GeForce RTX 4080 Verto Epic-X, which was listed at £1,289.99. The other one was the Galax/KFA2 GeForce RTX 4080 SG 1-Click OC, which was listed for £1,329.95. As you can see, unlike the Palit cards, these two are much closer to the MSRP.

Nvidia and respective AIB partners will launch their RTX 4080 graphics cards on the 16th of November.

Nearly two years on from its initial launch, PlayStation 5 consoles are still hard to find, with most retailers selling out new stock as quickly as it arrives. Though still plagued by supply issues due to global circumstances, Sony has managed to sell more than 2 million PS5 consoles in the UK alone.

As reported by Gamesindustry.biz and GfK, Sony’s PlayStation 5 has surpassed over 2 million units sold in the UK, making it the fourth fastest-selling games console of all time, only behind the PS4 (No.3), the PS2 (No.2) and Nintendo Wii (No.1).

That being said, the PS5’s 2 million units represent a bigger success for Sony than other systems due to the price of the console meaning that the 2 million sales generated £919 million in revenue. For comparison’s sake, the Nintendo Wii’s 2 million sales amounted to ‘just’ £358 million, with the previous record holder being the Xbox One with £726 million at 2m units sold.

Speaking on this success, GfK’s Dorian Bloch said “Given the stock problems surrounding PS5 it is fair to say it would have easily outpaced PS3 to 2m units. One thing that is clear, the significantly higher price of PS5 has not hindered sales, with consumers willing to pay the £105 premium that is shown on the average price of both consoles over this 2m unit period. PS5 has delivered the highest revenue for any console at two million units.”

As impressive as the PS5’s success has been so far, it would have been interesting to see just how well the console performs when not limited by major stock and component shortages.

KitGuru says: Have you managed to get a PS5? How long did it take? If stock wasn’t an issue, how many units do you think Sony would have sold so far in the UK? Let us know down below.
