In recent years we have seen Nintendo expand outwards beyond just video games, with the entertainment giant partnering with Universal Studios to open up a dedicated Super Nintendo World within Universal’s parks. Nintendo World is set to get a massive upgrade next year, with the Japanese branch adding a dedicated Donkey Kong area to the park.

As reported by YTV.co,jp (and translated via DeepL), Nintendo is set to introduce ‘Donkey Kong Country’ to its Japanese Super Nintendo World park, greatly expanding its size and adding more theme-park-related attractions.

Donkey Kong Country will reportedly be 1.7 times bigger than the current Super Nintendo World, due in part to the addition of a “roller coaster-type attraction” which will of course be heavily themed to fit the series it is based on.

Alongside the announcement, a brief trailer was released showing a digital approximation of what fans can expect from Donkey Kong Country when it opens up in Spring of 2024. Speaking on this latest expansion, the vice president of Universal Studios Japan said:

“We hope you will look forward to a new experience where adults and children alike will be enthralled, be themselves, and get super-excited as they search, discover, collect, and be amazed by unpredictable experiences.”

In February 2021, Super Nintendo World opened in Japan – being the first Nintendo-themed park to do so. That being said, more parks are on their way and we now know when, as it has been officially announced that Super Nintendo World Hollywood  will open in February 2023.

As reported by Deadline, Super Nintendo World will be officially opening in Universal Studios Hollywood on the 17th of February 2023 – almost exactly two years after the opening in Japan.

We have yet to see any footage of the park, however if the Japanese Super Nintendo World is anything to go by it will be richly detailed from top to bottom with countless Nintendo references.

The console manufacturer seems to be going all-in with these parks, as we already know of multiple others on the way, including Super Nintendo World Orlando and Singapore.

So far, no European parks have been announced, though considering the success of the Japanese theme park and the perceived bullishness of Nintendo with this project, hopefully an announcement for Super Nintendo World UK is on its way any day now.

Nintendo has a storied and rich history both inside the video games industry as well as outside of it. With so many iconic characters and IP, it makes sense to expand beyond one medium. They have done just that with the Super Nintendo World theme park in Japan. Following that, the US is now getting its own Nintendo theme park.

Yesterday was the 10th of March, known by some as MAR10 day. As part of this annual celebration many of Nintendo's best Mario titles have been put on sale. Additionally, Nintendo offered an update on the US launch of its Super Nintendo World theme park, revealing that it is planned to open in Hollywood in 2023.

Making the announcement, the official Universal Studios Hollywood Twitter account said “#SuperNintendoWorld is opening in 2023 at Universal Studios Hollywood! Level up with exclusive merch at the Feature Presentation store, opening soon.”

As mentioned, a Japanese Super Nintendo World was opened back in February / March 2021 offering an AR Mario Kart game; a Yoshi themed ride, and a few other attractions. While not as big as some theme parks (especially as it is merely a section within Universal Studios parks), Super Nintendo World does offer a number of interesting rides with unique gimmicks. It will be interesting to see how big the US version of Super Nintendo World will be.

Currently, Super Nintendo World has been confirmed to be opening in two more locations: Universal Studios Singapore and Universal Studios Orlando. Hopefully these two follow shortly after the launch of the Hollywood branch.

Ever since it was first announced, fans have been eagerly anticipating the opening of Nintendo’s first theme park, dubbed ‘Super Nintendo World’. Despite the current global circumstances, it would seem that the theme park is now complete and ready to open, as it has been announced that Super Nintendo World will be opening on the 4th of February 2021.

In an announcement by Universal Studios, which has partnered with Nintendo for the theme park, the Super Nintendo World zone at Universal Studios Japan will be opening on the 4th of February 2021.

Alongside the announcement was a trailer for the park, which showed off just how much work was put into Super Nintendo World, including moving Thwomps, rotating gold coins and more. The park will also feature the “world’s first interactive Mario Kart theme park ride” which is said to “immerse guests into the universe of Nintendo.”

Of course, as mentioned, the world is currently going through a global pandemic, and so it’ll be interesting to see how the park will operate in the wake of this. If Japan is too far away to travel to, Nintendo previously announced its intentions to open more Super Nintendo World parks following on from its Japanese launch.

Currently, there are plans for a park to open in Singapore as well as the USA, though no dates have been given for either. With how Nintendo has always made ‘fun’ a core tenet of its games, hopefully the same ideology translates to the new parks.

Doom is one of the many gaming franchises to suffer from the video game movie curse, in that its Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson-fronted film from 2005 was a complete disaster. Given the success of the 2016 video game reboot, it seems that a new Doom movie adaptation might be in the works.

Actress and singer Nina Bergman has apparently signed up with Universal for a brand new Hollwood adaptation of Doom, according to her official Twitter account. Considering Bergman revealed that she has just signed the paperwork, if the film is in the works, it is still in the early pre-production stages.

It seems that one of the principle photography locations will be Bulgaria, which Bergman expressed her excitement to return to as a result of the supposed Doom adaptation. Bergman went on to confirm to fans that it will be a “much better script” than the previous 2005 adaptation, which fared disappointingly at the box office and with critics.

While it’s debatable what angle the unannounced “super cool” director will take with the movie, it is likely that Universal will opt to run with the successful 2016 reboot of the video game franchise after it worked so well for Warner Bros. Tomb Raider (2018).

Universal going for another bout with Doom isn't too surprising given that rumours of a new Doom movie have been circulating for quite some time. Considering the resurgence of video game movies in the past couple of years, this seems like the perfect time for Doom to debut, however it remains to be seen if Bergman's letting the cat out of the bag early has damaged the studio's plans.

KitGuru Says: While Bergman isn’t exactly a household name, it’s worth remembering that the star-studded cast of the 2005 adaptation couldn’t save it from its own clichés and pitfalls. In that respect, relatively fresh stars might be just what the piece needs… And a good script. Would you like to see a Doom film done right?

The unfinished trailer for The Mummy reboot which was accidentally uploaded to the IMAX Youtube account has been doing the rounds for a few days now, and as you might imagine, Universal Pictures isn't happy. In typical fashion however, it's fallen in to the pitfall of trying to have it removed from the internet – and we all know how well that works.

The Mummy is an upcoming 2017 action movie that reboots the original Brendan Fraser vehicle with a new protagonist in the form of perennial action star, Tom Cruise. By all measures it looks like your average action adventure film, but a trailer which was uploaded without much of its sound has been doing big numbers, despite Universal's attempts to have it removed.

The video we embedded in our original story has around 500,000 views at the time of writing and has yet to be removed, but elsewhere Universal has been much more successful. It's pulled Youtube clips and even Tweets from some people referencing it, using the DMCA takedown procedure to censor their messages.

As TorrentFreak points out, the language in the DMCA takedown notice suggests that the trailer was “leaked,” when it was presumably an IMAX employee who uploaded it in the first place. While a mistake, that certainly isn't a leak.

As with all things internet too, if you try to hide something, the result is the complete opposite. The trailer has been re-uploaded in so many places that it's now easier than ever to find and people have been adding their own soundtracks to the trailer and putting cruise and co.'s audio over other videos and content.

My personal favourite is Cruise's scream being given the honour of becoming the 21st century's Wilhelm Scream.

Although eager sharers on Facebook and elsewhere have been fooled for years into thinking “today is the day,” that Marty and Doc travelled ‘Back' to the future in the second film, that date is now only a few days away. Yes the 21st October 2015 is when the pair of intrepid time meddlers ended up in the “future,” so no doubt a number of people will be sharing that image once again. But that's not the only celebration. In Rocket League, the developers are patching in a Delorean to show their appreciation for the classic trilogy.

“We used to fantasise and joke about having the DeLorean Time Machine in our game months before it even came out. We were all such huge Back to the Future fans here at Psyonix, that it was one of the few ‘Holy Grails' we had hoped for besides having a hit game,” the developers said on the PlayStation Blog.

This car isn't quite like any of the others in the game either, as it has some unique visual effects which allow it to really stand out. While all cars have boost trails – the Delorean being no different – it also has trails of fire once it gets up to speed. On top of that, Psonix revealed that when you go for an aerial, the wheels fold away as the car enters jet mode.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MWTGyIwgvZw']

The Delorean is set to go on sale on the iconic 21st October for $2 or likely around £2 in the UK, as part of the “Back to the Future Car Pack,” though Psyonix does remind us that the Revenge of the Battle-Cars DLC pack is now on sale too, including more cars, hats and effects.

Although Kim Dotcom has said a lot about the corporate and governmental people he's dealt with over the years running file lockers and other various services, there has rarely been proof to back up that these conversations actually took place. Now though, he's revealed a recording of a conversation between himself and several Universal executives, in which they discuss the possibility of working together, but more importantly that they control who is on a “bad list” of individuals that the music industry goes after.

Much of the call discussed the potential for Dotcom's MegaKey system, which would have seen adverts around the web overlayed with MegaUpload controlled adverts, specifically linking to content of companies like Universal. However while executives seemed very excited by the idea of tapping into huge advertising markets, there was also some tension in the air, since Dotcom's file locker was considered by many as a hotbed of piracy.

dotcomflowers
How could they ever consider this flower loving guy “evil?”

“We have gotten a lot of fire from RIAA, MPAA, everyone in the content industry, for you know, Megaupload,” Dotcom said (via TorrentFreak). “We don’t have a rewards program, we are one of the cleanest guys.”

Indeed before MegaUpload was shut down, it provided back-end access to many copyright holders, which was more than most other file lockers. However this wasn't enough for the industry at the time, which saw Dotcom as a bad egg. Indeed, he was on a list.

In the end, the Universal executives were happy to put the word out that Dotcom was not on the evil list any more, but only if he dropped a lawsuit against UMG for taking down his MegaSong video.

“In exchange for the litigation disappearing there are certain people I can have conversations with where you will be moved onto a different list as opposed to a bad list,” one executive said.

When Dotcom responded by saying he wanted to be on the “friends list,” the same executive replied:

“Yeah, well you get on to the friends list once we’ve signed a deal. And then the rules of engagement change completely. In the short-term I can downgrade your status from ‘evil’ to ‘bad’ and as the process goes on it will be from ‘bad’ to ‘good’ to ‘exceptional partner’.”

Despite these plans, just two days later, Kim Dotcom's home was raided, his assets were seized and MegaUpload was shut down for good.

The recording is about 30 minutes long and can be listened to in its entirety here.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: It will be interesting to know whether the parties involved knew they were being recorded here. If so, this could be prime evidence in Dotcom's extradition trial showing that his arrest was down to the pressure of industry executives, rather than any concrete evidence of wrongdoing.

It looks like Spotify might be preparing to limit its free streaming tier from early 2016 onwards in order to keep record labels signed on to the service. Spotify is apparently facing pressure from labels, including Sony and Universal to offer less music in the free tier in order to get labels to renew their current contracts.

At present, Spotify's licenses for music from Sony and Universal run out on the 1st of October this year, according to Digital Music News. We have heard in the past that labels aren't happy with the earnings generated from Spotify's ad-supported model and now with Apple Music knocking around, Spotify is likely under increased pressure.

Spotify-Logo-600x350

The free tier will be scaled down, meaning certain album releases and tracks will only be available to paying subscribers. This will likely come in to effect for many of the high profile artists, either pushing free-tier customers to spring for the subscription, or potentially pushing them towards piracy.

One of the sources speaking with Digital Music News said that Spotify wants “free users to feel like they're missing something” rather than just being forced to listen to adverts every so often. Changes are likely being talked over with labels already and according to the report, they will come in to effect next year.

This all follows the launch of Apple Music, which was recently cleared of anti-competitive practises by the EU Commission, though the FTC is still investigating in the US. The service currently has 11 million trial users, though we won't know how many of those stick around to pay the subscription until sometime after September.

KitGuru Says: Spotify still has around 70 million free users, which has to count for something. However, it almost sounds like now that Apple Music is around, labels are more willing to begin withdrawing support from Spotify.

Universal is one of the major movie studios that has gone after pirates with everything it's got over the past decade, but it might want to look inside its organisation as much as without. One of the automated DMCA takedown tools utilised by the company has filed a takedown request for the location “http://127.0.0.1:4001/#/fr/” which would suggest that the French Universal Pictures servers are in-fact seeding torrents of its new movie, Jurassic World.

This was bundled in with other addresses such as torrent sites and forum topics which were also hosting links to copyright protected content, but clearly the tool picked up something coming from Universal France's own servers.

It may just be that an error was made by the takedown tool, which would be a little less embarrassing for Universal. However, if that is the case, the question needs to be asked, what other errors have its takedown tools made in the pursuit of file sharers the world over?

pratt
At least Chris was amused by the whole thing

If it didn't make a mistake though. Universal will need to run a tighter ship in future, as having the biggest movie you've released in a while seeded from your very own servers suggests someone working on the inside for the scene groups that upload this sort of content.

Regardless of which is the case in this instance, we do know that Universal's automated tools have hiccuped in the past. Just a few days ago it attempted to take down the IMDB entry for Fast and Furious 7, after it mistook it for a pirate site.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: The use of automated tools is understandable to an extent, but if they're making these kinds of gaffs regularly they need retooling. Either that or Universal really needs to look at who might have the balls to seed a movie from a movie studio server.

Google gets hit with thousands of takedown requests a day, a significant portion of which tend to be from movie studios attempting to combat piracy. Unfortunately, these requests often tend to be automated and sometimes don't make any sense at all. This week, Universal Pictures sent a Google a new batch of ‘infringing URLs' that it would like to see buried by the search engine, one of which happened to be the IMDB listing for Furious 7.

In-case you aren't in the loop, IMDB is a movie database site and is in no way affiliated with piracy. Copyright holders often don't check the validity of their own requests, which results in issues like this.

fastimdb

As spotted by TorrentFreak, the takedown request also references links to the movie ‘Hacker'. In this request, Universal also mistakenly asked Google to take down a news article from website, Techdirt, which covered the Hacking Team leak recently.

One more amusing observation is that Universal also asked Google in a separate notice to censor http://127.0.0.1 from search results. Universal Studio's takedown requests are actually handled by an outside agency known as Trident Media Guard, which clearly is not doing its job properly if it is linking news articles, IMDB and the standard localhost IP in with piracy takedown notices.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Piracy is a problem but so is blatant abuse of the DMCA system, something that media companies seem to get away with constantly with no consequences. These studios would do well to actually check the validity of their own takedown requests before dumping them on to Google.

Universal has announced that a couple of its upcoming films have been delayed, which includes Warcraft, which will now come out on the 10th of June 2016.

Historically, films based on video games don't turn out that great but what do you guys think? Does the Warcraft movie have the potential to be good?

The World of Warcraft movie is due to finish filming in just two weeks time from now but it still won't be coming out for around two years. The film will take 20 months in post-production in order to “get right” according to Legendary Films CEO, Thomas Tull.

The reason for Warcraft's lengthy post-production cycle is in-part due to the amount of big movies coming out between now and the end of next year including Star Wars VII as well as the next Avengers flick. “As you may have noticed, these next two years, there's pretty big titles coming out,” Tull said, speaking to CraveOnline.

“We wanted to make sure that we got that right, but there are some sequences and some things that Duncan Jones has done that are truly on the cutting edge. You want to have plenty of time to make sure that we dial those in. So by the time they get home and set up, it'll be a little less than two years. It'll be about 20 months but we really want to take our time and get this right because the technology that's employed really is some next generation stuff.”

The CGI and effects in the film are in good hands as Industrial Light & Magic who worked on the Star Wars movies is involved. Warcraft is currently slated for a mid-2016 release.

KitGuru Says: Films based on games don't usually go down so well but maybe the huge amount of time going in to this project will help make it stand out. Do any of you guys play WoW? Do you have high hopes for the film?

Two days ago, KitGuru Lab staff cast their eyes over a photo of a brand new product. It looked amazing and seemed to offer a level of flexibility in LN2 cooling that you don't often see. That product is the EK-SF3D Critical Point. We have been lucky enough to get an exclusive interview with co-creator Petri Korhonen. KitGuru dons the safety gear and begins the questioning.

First, a very short grounder on cooling. When you put electricity into components, they get hot. In general terms, more performance means more power and more heat. At the low end, you can leave CPUs, GPUs etc to fend for themselves (passive cooling with heatpipes and fins). One step up involves a fan. Next you have liquid cooling, using materials that are not likely to harm a toddler. At the very high end, when the amount of current being used would fry most chips for dinner, you have liquid nitrogen. LN2.

Second, let's  have a quick look at EK. In 1999, Edvard König got hold of his first PC and quickly realised that ‘passive' and ‘air' were not for him. Over the next 4 years, while he was studying, Edvard began working on water block prototypes – aptly named EK-1, EK-2 and EK-3. From there grew one of the most respected specialist cooling companies in the world. Just how good are they?  Well, when YOYOTech wanted to create the Aurum 24K with a custom liquid cooling solution for £8,000 – EK was their first and only choice. As well as KitGuru's own gallery on that stunning looking system, you can also find it on Forbes.

That brings us to the focus of our piece, Petri Korhonen AKA SF3D and the EK-SF3D Critical Point solution for LN2 record breakers.

He is probably most famous for his part in the AMD ‘Experiment' in Las Vegas on 10th January 2009, when he used liquid helium for the first time in public to take a quad core processor past 6.5GHz and smashed the record for 3DMark 05 with a score that passed 45,000 – as the temperature close to key components approached absolute zero. Impressive stuff.

With that kind of history, it's easy to see what attracted EK to the partnership.

KG: So what was the driving force behind this inspired new design?
PK: “I have been using my own LN2 cooler designs since I started to use LN2 more frequently. After that they have evolved and first commercial product was launched in 2009. We made a cooperation deal with EKWB in the end of 2012 and first EK-SF3D products saw daylight in spring 2013. EKWB can produce very high quality products and the price is still competitive. This company is the only one who can really produce this type of devices properly”.

This little beauty is the result of a special collaboration between Petri and EK
This little beauty is the result of a special collaboration between Petri and EK.  To be honest, one look at Petri and the heat probably just leaves voluntarily.

KG: We have seen people try and create universal sittings before, but then the graphic card companies make changes to the board and they are redundant. How ‘flexible' is this design?
PK: “We offer the mounting system for most common graphics card types and in the future if something changes, we can deliver the new bracket with very low cost. Most of the mounting hole distances are covered, so I believe there will be no issues with mounting in the future”.

KG: From the first time you ‘sat down' with a pen and paper – how long did it take to get (a) the initial samples ready and (b) the final solution  ready to sell?
PK: “First we did some online meetings about Memory LN2 cooler and CPU LN2 cooler. During CEbit 2013 we made final design for GPU LN2 cooler and made launch schedule for the products. We have been able to launch them all during this year and there is something new coming out shortly”.

KG: Sometimes in life, you trade flexibility for ‘straight line speed' do you expect world records to be set with this unit?
PK: “Memory LN2 cooler have been already used in WR setups and there will be records coming with the other units as well, because they can handle whatever you like to do with them. We make no compromises, so we have a plan to win the whole race”.

KG: Any unusually difficult technical problems you had to overcome?
PK: “The new mounting system for CPU pot was a bit difficult to create but we did overcome those things fast. We wanted to avoid basic errors there have been in previous products and we can offer for example highest pressure over CPU to LN2 cooler contact and always 100% similar and accurate contact”.

KG: At low temperatures, is Gelid GC-Extreme really the best?
PK: It is one of the best there are at the moment. It have worked very well in many different situations and never failed very badly. LN2 cooling and extreme heatloads are combination which would need product designed only for that situation and it is not commercially usable product. That is the reason we won’t see that type of “LN2 only” thermal pastes on market.

KG: For you, what part of this product makes you most proud?
PK: Every part of it! The quality, design, looks and performance.

Petri first began collaborating with EK back in 2010, but it became more serious in 2012. So what got him started and what makes this multi-record-breaking designer tick?

KG: So what was your proudest moment in overclocking?
PK: “There are plenty of moments to be proud of and none of them can be named separately. Best moments are the AMD ‘Experiment' in Las Vegas where we used Liquid Helium first time on computer parts and broke 3Dmark05 world record. Later first 7GHz AMD result and so on. All the World records which have been broken make me still proud. I have been also competing in many live competitions etc. and those have been best moments of the career”.

KG: What was your first job ever?
PK: “Hard question! First job where I got some money was in 1997 and I was helping my dad in some building projects”.

KG: What was your first PC ever?
PK: “I think it was 1988 when my dad bought our first PC. There was really nothing to do with it at that point, so it took years to get something better. I think it was 1993 when I started to play games and after that I have been using PC’s quite a lot”.

Finland produces some amazing drivers and overclockers - add a little Slovenian precision engineering and you have a potent mix

Enough of that – time to get very personal

KG: If you have to impress friends, what would YOU cook?
PK: “Depends a lot about which friends they are, but I can make very good BBQ food or some Asian dishes. I really love to make food so I actually cook a lot to my friends as well. My wife really likes this side of me”.

KG: What do you LOVE eating, but cannot cook – so you need to go to a restaurant?
PK: “Sometimes it is nice to go restaurant just to do nothing but eat. But I am not so interested to make sushi, so that is what I need to get from restaurants”.

KG: If you were driving in the perfect car, along the Pacific highway. What would the car be?  What track is playing on the radio? Who is the passenger?
PK: “This is hard question. I have AUDI now, so it would be R8 or RS6. The song from the radio is some decent dance/trance which suits for that moment. Passenger is my wife of course” [Safe choices! – Ed]

KG: Brings us onto our last question: If you could invent anything, what would it be?
PK: “In related to computers it would be automatic LN2 cooling devices which could control temperature in milliseconds and the system would monitor all possible things on setup. If I could invent anything what could be possible I would do first working fusion nuclear reactor which would solve the energy issues we will have in the future. That would be good enough I think.”

KitGuru says: There you have it – insight into the co-designer of the EK-SF3D Critical Point cooling solution. Now all you need is a tray of expensive processors, 200Kg of LN2 and some spare fingers. BIG THANKS to Petri for answering our questions.
