Over the past week, AMD has been particularly focused on its upscaling technology, celebrating the 1-year anniversary of FSR and releasing FSR 2.0's source code. Now, FSR 2.0 is also available as a plugin for both Unreal Engine 4 and Unreal Engine 5, making it easier for developers to implement.

AMD often stated that FSR 2.0 is relatively easy and fast to implement, but things could be better. One way to speed things up for developers is through a plugin, which AMD has now released for Unreal Engine 4.26 and 4.27, as well as Unreal Engine 5

Developers interested in implementing AMD's upscaling tech on their games should read the company's own guide. Here, you'll find the system requirements, an explanation for the installation and configuration process, and some recommendations regarding specific visuals. For the FSR 2 plugin, you'll need the UE 4.26.2 or a more recent version (UE 5 included). As for the FSR2MovieRenderPipeline plugin, you'll need UE 4.27.2 or later, including UE 5.

Nvidia also has a DLSS 2.0 plugin available for Unreal Engine, making it easy for developers to implement both technologies if they choose.

KitGuru says: AMD has released everything it needs to for developers to quickly adopt and get up to speed with the new FSR 2.0 technology. Hopefully we'll see more games supporting FSR 2.0 at launch in late 2022 and beyond.

AMD launched FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) earlier this year, with a handful of games supporting the feature. Now, FSR has arrived as a plugin for Unreal Engine 4, making it easier for developers to implement in their games.

With FSR now available as a plugin for UE4, we should see more games adopting the technology. AMD has also published an implementation guide on GPUOpen, where it briefly explains the recommended settings for the presets.

Like other FSR implementations, FSR on UE4 has four presets:

 • Ultra Quality – produces an image with quality virtually indistinguishable from native rendering. It should be selected when the highest quality is desired. At recommended settings, it renders images at 77% of the display resolution.
 • Quality – produces an upscaled image with a quality representative of native rendering, with a sizeable performance gain. At recommended settings, it renders images at 67% of the display resolution.
 • Balanced – produces an upscaled image approximating native rendering quality, with a significant performance gain compared to native. At recommended settings, it renders images at 59% of the display resolution.
 • Performance – visibly impacts image quality and should only be selected where needing additional performance is critical. At recommended settings, it renders images at 50% of the display resolution.

AMD also states that developers can use FSR alongside Unreal Engine 4 Temporal Anti-Aliasing with Upsampling (TAAU) or another temporal upscaling algorithm via hybrid upscaling. In these situations, the temporal upscaling algorithm will work as the primary upscaler, while FSR works as the secondary upscaler. AMD FSR is available starting on UE version 4.271.1. UE5 has yet to receive the plugin.

KitGuru says: Now that UE4 has the AMD FSR plugin available, it will be much easier for developers to implement the technology in their games. Moreover, it shouldn't take long before we see it in UE5, further increasing the range of supported games.

Back in March, we learned that NCSoft would be upgrading the western version of its MMO, Blade & Soul, to use Unreal Engine 4. The engine swap brings some major graphical upgrades and new features to the game. As of today, the big update is now live, alongside a brand new playable class.

Blade & Soul was updated to Unreal Engine 4 in Korea some time ago. It took NCSoft a while, but the publisher finally announced that it would be rolling out the update worldwide earlier this year. Now after a few additional months of waiting, the update has gone live, introducing a range of graphical improvements, as well as new content.

This upgrade not only polishes up the MMO’s graphics, but it also implements new game and network optimisations for better performance, new game systems and the update will also introduce a brand new playable class.

The new class is the Dual Blade, allowing players to sacrifice defence for more offense, equipping two lightning-quick blades for hacking and slashing, utilising a smooth combo system.

Blade & Soul’s Unreal Engine 4 update is live as of the 8th of September.

Nvidia keeps expanding the DLSS environment. With 57 games and counting, DLSS is now also supported on Unreal Engine 5 through a free plugin. Moreover, Nvidia will also introduce support for its upscaling technology on Unity 2021.2, but an exact date hasn't been set yet.

As of today, DLSS is supported in 57 games, including the recently launched Lego Builder's Journey. However, the list will keep growing in the coming months, with Doom Eternal on June 29th, Rust on July 1st, The Ascent on July 29th, and Red Dead Redemption II, Icarus: First Cohort and Dying 1983 coming at a later date.

Besides all the games already supporting DLSS and the ones coming, Unreal Engine 5 has also received support for Nvidia's upscaling technology. Similar to UE4, DLSS on UE5 can be implemented through a free plugin. Unity Engine 2021.2 will also receive support at a later date.

Lastly, Nvidia announced that starting today, Valve's Proton supports DLSS. For now, only Vulkan titles such as DOOM Eternal, No Man’s Sky, and Wolfenstein: Youngblood are supported, but DirectX titles are expected to come this Fall.

The post Days Gone PC Performance Benchmark – 30 GPUs tested! first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
Today we are back with another extensive performance analysis, as we check out the recently-released Days Gone. As the latest formerly PlayStation-exclusive title to come to the PC, we test thirty graphics cards in this game to find out exactly what sort of GPU you need to play at maximum image quality settings. Has this game launched in a better state than when Horizon Zero Dawn first came to PC? Let's find out.

The first thing to know about Days Gone is that it is developed by Sony's Bend Studio, and is built on Unreal Engine 4. Interestingly though, it uses DirectX 11, and there's no option for DX12. That means there's no ray tracing or DLSS features in Days Gone, something which is becoming more unusual these days.

In terms of visual settings, there are a number of options in the display menu. Textures, lighting, shadows and more can all be adjusted, while it's great to see a field of view (FOV) slider as well as a render scale setting. There's also a selection of quick presets – Low, Medium, High and Very High – and for our benchmarking today we opted for the Very High preset, with V-Sync of course disabled.

Driver Notes

 • AMD GPUs were benchmarked with the 21.5.2 driver.
 • Nvidia GPUs were benchmarked with the 466.47 driver.

Test System

Our 1-minute benchmark pass came from quite early on in the game, as Deacon is riding on the back of Boozer's motorbike, headed to Crazy Willie's. This represents a reasonably demanding section of the game based on the first hour or so that I played through, and it is also highly repeatable which makes it great for benchmarking multiple GPUs.

Closing Thoughts

By and large, Days Gone is an impressive PC port that almost everyone will be happy with. I say almost everyone, as currently my main issue with the game is related to visible stuttering when using an RDNA 2 GPU. This didn't happen for other AMD cards though, or Nvidia GPUs, so hopefully it is a quick fix for AMD's driver team or the game's developers.

As a DX11 title built on Unreal Engine 4, if we had to guess before testing the game, we would've thought Nvidia GPUs would perform the best, and that is certainly true. RTX 2070 Super is significantly faster than the RX 5700 XT, for example, while RTX 3070 also beats out the RX 6800 across the board, which isn't something we usually see.

Even then, the game does run well across a wide variety of hardware. GTX 1060 and RX 580, for instance, aren't far off from hitting 60FPS at 1080p with maximum image quality settings, with just a few small tweaks to the IQ needed to hit that figure. VRAM doesn't appear to be in high demand either, with both the 4GB and 8GB versions of the RX 5500 XT performing almost identically.

If you do want to drop down some image quality settings, the game's options scale well. We found that the High preset offered 35% more performance than Very High (which is more than enough to get a GTX 1060 averaging over 60FPS at 1080p), while you can almost double frame rates using the Low preset when compared to Very High.

The only other issue I noticed is what appears to be an animation hitching problem in the game, which is particularly noticeable when riding a motorbike – the game feels like it is slowing down but then correcting itself by speeding up again. This wasn't a game breaker for me but it was most noticeable when frame rates were below 60FPS – the higher the frame rate, the less I noticed the issue.

Discuss on our Facebook page HERE.

KitGuru says: Days Gone is definitely in a better state at launch than what we saw when Horizon Zero Dawn hit PCs in 2020. There's a couple of issues to be fixed, but by and large this game performs well across a good range of graphics cards.

It looks like NCSoft is bringing the Unreal Engine 4 upgrade to Blade & Soul worldwide after all. Initially, the UE4 upgrade was only available on a Korean server, but this summer, the developers will be bringing the new features to the full live game in the west.

This summer, the MMORPG Blade & Soul will be upgraded to Unreal Engine 4 visuals. The change in the game engine will bring improved performance, reduced lag and loading times. As you would expect, there will also be graphical upgrades, bringing new depth and clarity to the in-game visuals.

Previously, these upgrades were previewed on the Final Frontier server in Korea. That server will be closing down as the developers intend to push the full game to Unreal Engine 4 with additional enhancements.

The Unreal Engine 4 upgrade is arriving over the summer, so it is still a few months away. Other content updates coming to Blade & Soul this year include a new character class, new specialisations for existing classes, new dungeons and other new systems.

Back in early 2016, we learned that a small indie team was working on remaking BioWare's beloved Star Wars classic, Knights of the Old Republic. The remake was set to be called ‘Apeiron' and would see the game return in Unreal Engine 4 with completely overhauled graphics. Character models, planets and more had been completed but it looks like Lucasfilm's lawyers finally caught up, shutting down the project.

The Apeiron KOTOR remake was being worked on by Poem Studios, a small team born from working on this project. The team would host weekly Twitch streams of development progress and regularly put out YouTube videos to show off small parts of the game in action. Earlier this week, Poem Studios head, Taylor Trotter, announced that he had received a cease and desist letter from Lucasfilm, and as a result, the project will go no further.

Writing on the Apeiron Discord server, Trotter told fans: “It's with a great sadness that I'm posting today; I recently received a letter from Lucasfilm instructing Poem to end production on Apeiron. After a few days, I've exhausted my options to keep it afloat; we knew this day was a possibility. I'm sorry and may the force be with you”.

The Apeiron Discord is now the ‘Poem Studios' Discord instead and the studio will move on to other projects: “A question I see a lot is asking us if we'll make a new game, the answer is an infallible “yes”. At Poem we hosted an internal hack-a-thon for the team a few months ago and we have already started a new game then, we didn't want this to go public since I thought it would take away from Apeiron. We already have assets and ideas set up, so the transition between Apeiron and our new project codename “novella” will be as frictionless as possible”.

The legal letter that Poem Studios received calls on the developers to destroy all code relating to the project and remove all Star Wars and KOTOR related assets from its website and social media pages.

KitGuru Says: Apeiron managed to go unnoticed for a long time and with KOTOR being on of my favourite games of all time, I had hoped things would stay that way. Unfortunately, Lucasfilm and Disney tend to have eagle-eyed lawyers, so this day was always inevitable. Hopefully Poem Studios can find success working on an original IP instead.

Despite arguably being a masterpiece, Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid hasn’t aged well since its original 1998 release. Fortunately, ex-Crytek designer has given the world a glimpse at what it might look like with modern day graphics, remaking the opening scene using Unreal Engine 4.

Opening with a shot underneath the Bering Sea in Alaska, fans of Metal Gear Solid are sure to get a tingle of nostalgia seeing the submarine Discovery whoosh by to the sound of dramatic, overbearing music. This particularly kicks in with the sound of Paul Eiding’s Colonel Roy Campbell briefing our beloved Solid Snake on his mission within Shadow Moses Island, as the titular character embarks in an SDV (Swimmer Delivery Vehicle) subtly emblazoned with creator Hideo Kojima’s name on the front.

Taking his experience as an art director on Crysis, Ryse and even Star Citizen, Erasmus Brosdau realised a passion of his by recreating the opening scene to Metal Gear Solid in glorious 4K resolution. Utilising Unreal Engine 4, Brosdau places a disclaimer on the description of the video, altering people that some assets from the marketplace were used, alongside remastering some of the audio and tweaking the shots used.

This isn’t the first time that we’ve seen Metal Gear Solid get the Unreal Engine 4 treatment, as a fan remake known as Shadow Moses was in the works. Sadly, this was cancelled with no public reason announced, although its believed that Konami interfered with the project. Although this cinematic doesn’t house any gameplay, it could suffer the same fate due to its use of licensed logos and audio.

Fortunately, Silicon Knights did produce a remake of its own in 2004, exclusively for the GameCube. Metal Gear Solid: Twin Snakes features the same engine used for Metal Gear Solid 2, with updated mechanics and cutscenes. Sadly, this itself is also quite dated and is often criticised for its over-the-top action sequences and poor re-recorded dialogue.

KitGuru Says: Those that enjoyed this opening cutscene can still look forward to Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ live action film adaptation, although the MGS movie has been under way for quite some time with no announced time frame as of yet.

It has been close to 13 years since Bioware launched Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the series still remains popular today. So much so that a group of budding enthusiasts have got together to reboot the game in its entirety and bring it to the Unreal Engine 4. We originally learned about this remake last month and since then, a ton of buzz has surrounded the project, leading us to the release of the first gameplay video.

The video is mostly just a pre-recorded walk-around tour of some of the new maps being built, including Tatooine, Taris and the Endar Spire, voiced over by YouTuber ‘MrMattyPlays', who has over 250,000 subscribers at the time of writing.

Endar Spire

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s58TvG8V-0k']

The development team plans to add “new worlds, missions HUD, inventory system, items and companions” so it is a pretty huge project. Not only is it going to see Knights of the Old Republic rebuilt in a modern engine but new content will also be added. The game will also feature a new combat system, with the ability to switch between third and first-person perspectives.

One thing that has concerned many is the legality of this remake. Fan-led projects like this don't always float well with copyright owners but so far, Disney hasn't hammered down with its lawyers just yet so we'll see how it goes. The team behind Knights of the Old Republic: Apeiron do claim that everything on their end is legally sound so hopefully we will see this project completed eventually.

KitGuru Says: As a huge fan of Knights of the Old Republic myself, I'm looking forward to this remake. It is still in the early stages though so we likely won't be playing it for ourselves for quite some time.

It has been close to 13 years since Bioware launched Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and the series still remains popular today. So much so that a group of budding enthusiasts have got together to reboot the game in its entirety and bring it to the Unreal Engine 4.

Poem Studios has been working on Knights of the Old Republic: Apeiron for some time and already have a few of the game's playable areas built, including the Endar Spire, parts of Taris and Tatooine.

The team plans to add “new worlds, missions HUD, inventory system, items and companions” so it is a pretty huge project. Not only is it going to see Knights of the Old Republic rebuilt in a modern engine but new content will also be added.

Huge fan-led projects like this sometimes don't float well with companies that own the IP but Poem Studios is claiming that this is all legally sound since the game will be free. However, the studio also hasn't been in contact with anyone at Disney, EA or Bioware so they could have a different opinion.

If you want to see more, you can find all of the screenshots and currently available information about the project, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Knights of the Old Republic is my all-time favourite game so I would love to see it rebuilt. Unreal Engine 4 is a very graphically impressive engine too so it should all look quite nice. However, we are probably a long way off from getting anything playable for now.

Studio Wildcard, the team behind the most recent early access survival game success story, ARK: Survival Evolved, has just released modding tools for the game. Since ARK runs on Unreal Engine 4, the developer teamed up with Epic Games to create mod support and tools for the community currently playing the game.

This means we will see custom content popping up for the game pretty early on as it has only been out for around one month. The title also has Steam Workshop support, which will make installing mods easier for those who don't like messing around with files in the game directory.

ARK: Survival Evolved has blown up over the last few weeks and has had a huge presence on both Twitch and YouTube, which adds to the amount of hype surrounding this game. It has already sold one million copies at around $29.99/£19 each so it has already become a pretty huge success despite not being finished yet.

It's essentially a survival game with RPG elements in the form of an upgrade tree and stat boosters. Players are put in this big open world inhabited by dinosaurs and they have to learn their way around, build bases, harvest food and you can also tame the dinosaurs you find. You can also start up tribes, which will allow you to find your friends easier. You will also be able to spawn at Tribe owned locations with a bed in place, which can be pretty useful.

If you happen to be a modder yourself, you can find all of the details, HERE.

KitGuru Says: I've played a bit of ARK over the last few weeks and its a good game if you are in to that sort of thing. Clearly there is still an audience for these games despite new ones being released on a monthly basis and most of them remaining unfinished. Have any of you tried out ARK? What do you think of it? I'm looking forward to seeing what modders can come up with now that the tools have been released.

We've seen some pretty cool experiments in the Unreal 4 Engine, we've had a look at what the original Bioshock would look like in the engine, the temple of time from The Legend of Zelda was rebuilt in the engine and now we've got a look at what Super Mario would look like.

3D artist, Aryok Pineral, has posted a demo video of Mario running around a couple of environments built inside Unreal Engine 4:

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VUKcSiAPJoQ']

Screen Shot 2015-06-29 at 12.38.15

All animations were recreated from scratch while the environment assets were taken from the Unreal marketplace. Character actions were scripted using blueprints so quite a bit of work went in to this.

Unfortunately, Nintendo is pretty strict when it comes to use of its IPs, even for non-profit or demonstrative purposes. The company has taken down fan made projects in the past so who knows how long this will be around for, especially since its on YouTube, which Nintendo has been cracking down on a lot this year.

The free version of Unreal Tournament is coming along nicely and Epic Games has just given us an update on its progress, showing off the game's first high-textured map called ‘Outpost 23'. The latest Unreal Tournament title has been in the works for a while now and is a ‘collaborative effort' between the developers and the community.

The map was actually first shown off during the Unreal Engine 4 reveal as a fly-through area. The level has received some changes and touch ups to be incorporated in to the arena shooter. New changes for Outpost 23 include an outdoors section, the surfaces are less shiny and everything appears a bit more worn down.

The new version also contains multiple working weapons like the Pulse rifle and the Flak cannon. The best part is that you can play around with it now, if you want to try out the Unreal Tournament Alpha then it can be found, HERE.

There isn't much information available right now but Epic Games is still planning on making Unreal Tournament free once it is finished. This all follows yesterday's announcement that Unreal Engine 4 would be dropping its subscription, allowing anyone to use the engine for free.

Last year, Unreal Engine 4 launched a $19 per month subscription model in an effort to try and win indie developers back from Unity. Cryengine followed with a similar business model. However, Epic Games has now decided to just make Unreal Engine 4 free for all developers instead.

You can now download the Unreal Engine 4 for free along with all future updates. The engine can be used “for everything from game development, education, architecture, and visualization to VR, film and animation”, according to Tom Sweeney of Epic Games.

17p567z1ub17ujpg

“When you ship a game or application, you pay a 5% royalty on gross revenue after the first $3,000 per product, per quarter. It’s a simple arrangement in which we succeed only when you succeed.”

Epic Games came to the conclusion that the last barrier of entry for developers was the price of its engine. In order to get more developers involved, it decided to remove that barrier. Anyone who has paid for an Unreal Engine 4 subscription will now get a $30 credit to spend in the Unreal Engine marketplace.

Epic Games has always fostered new development in the gaming industry. As well as offering its latest and greatest game engine to everyone and anyone that wants to give it a try, for just $19 a month, it's been giving away huge prizes and funding to developers for years with its Make Something Unreal contest and now it's looking to do more of that, with a new grants program that will see promising UE4 developers funded to continue their work.

Setting aside $5 (£3.24) million for the task, Epic plans to give developers that are making something cool in the company's engine between $5,000 and $50,000, which should make their lives just a bit easier.

“The best part? There are absolutely no strings attached,” said Epic co-founder Tim Sweeney (via Eurogamer). “Your project remains yours; you own your IP and publishing rights and you can spend any grant funds however you like.”

fable

On the grants page, Epic explains that ultimately, if its developers succeed, it succeeds. “Unreal Dev Grants can give you the boost you need to take the project beyond [a] working prototype. Epic wants to help you focus more on creation and worry less about keeping the lights on,” it reads.

It doesn't even matter if your game has already been part or fully funded by crowd funding. If you need a little more to help tide you over, you need to have something cool looking made with UE4 and you stand a chance of being applicable for a grant. Epic will also be giving special attention to projects started by students or classes of school pupils.

To submit your team and your project for a grant application, all you have to do is email over the details of your project to unrealdevgrants@epicgames.com. Epic suggests that you send “videos, links, and any other info you think will help us see why you and your project are awesome.” However, it does caution that it won't be funding anything that is purely in the idea or conceptual phase. It needs to see working prototypes.

KitGuru Says: This is an interesting push by Epic and though it is exciting news for those already using UE4, bear in mind that it's designed to act as a big advert for the engine, rather than a purely altruistic offer.

While Benoît Dereau doesn't need to impress anyone in the gaming industry, having worked on the beautifully realised Dishonoured and developed some custom campaigns for Half Life 2 and Left 4 Dead, he has managed to wow a lot of people in the last 24 hours, by releasing one of the best looking Unreal Engine 4 demos yet. This one doesn't feature explosions or battling mechs though, instead it has him walking around an apartment. But that apartment is oh so real looking.

This is one of those cases where squinting could easily fool you into thinking it was a picture from a fancy hotel website.

While Dereua did use some third party assets as part of the flat's construction and stresses in the video's description that “This is a personal project and no benefit is derived from this demonstration,” it's a pretty stunning example of what one person can do with a unique artistic eye and a development engine that can be had for just $20 (£13) a month.

vampire
The mirror shows no reflection, so quite clearly the protagonist in this flat adventure is a vampire

There is no real gameplay to behold here, with the flat merely showing off artistically what an environment is capable of looking like in Unreal Engine 4, but as a quick demonstration of one man's work, it's quite staggering.

There's often a big problem for games developers when it comes to making a game, especially when it comes to shooters: how do they make it ok to kill hundreds and hundreds of enemies without you being the bad guy? Most of the time the easiest way is to make them zombies, or orcs or devils or evil orc zombie devils, but occasionally they're not. In a new game announced today called Hatred, from developer Destructive Creations, you mow down screaming, fleeing civilians in shooting sprees, for no apparent reason at all.

hatred
The only real difference with this game is he isn't a grizzled, shaved headed space marine.

“Hatred is an isometric shooter with disturbing atmosphere of mass killing, where player take on the role of a cold blood antagonist, who is full of hatred for humanity,” reads the official website. “It’s a horror, but here YOU are the villain.”

The game features open world levels, with a sandbox structure of slaughter, shootouts with the cops and some brutal synch kill animations complete with pleading victims. Have a gander at the trailer below if you're interested to see what it all looks like:

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RrX7G-1xPLs']

In a somewhat bizarre turn of events, especially for a company like Epic which has built itself on the wholesale slaughter of digital characters, the company behind the game's Unreal Engine has distanced itself from the developers, stating that it doesn't want its logo associated with the trailer.

“Unreal Engine 4 is available to the general public for use ‘for any lawful purpose,’ and we explicitly don’t exert any sort of creative control or censorship over projects. However, the video is using the trademarked Unreal Engine 4 logo without permission from Epic, and we’ve asked for the removal of our logo from all marketing associated with this product,” the company said.

For the developer's part, he just thought that including the logo in your video was mandatory when using UE4.

The game's trailer and premise have already caused much division, with some defending the developer's stance on anti-political-correctness in gaming, while others have suggested like many politicians have done about other games over the years, that it's just a murder simulator.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: It's worth remembering that this is far from the first time games have had you slaughtering innocents, they just tend to wrap it up in a way that makes it technically ok. The Bioshock series has you mowing down mentally ill drug addicts, Call of Duty has you wipe out an airport of civilians to fit in with your new Russian friends, GTA has you mowing down hundreds of police – to suggest this game is that much worse than anything that's come before is hypocritical.

You could even go so far as to say that a game like this is a great criticism of gaming and how it wraps up murder in fun new ways with each outing.

Attack on Titan is a snowballing phenomenon of an anime/manga, in the West as much as the East, but if you aren't aware of it, it's often described as Japan's equivalent of the Walking Dead. Only with naked giants without genitals instead of zombies. Despite its popularity though, its only gaming outings have been in the form of a 3DS title (Japanese release only) and a much more lauded tribute game for your PC's browser. However, fans of the series and its games have been salivating for the past couple of days, as someone just like them, but with a bit more game making know how, has been playing around with Unreal Engine 4 and made the following tantalising bit of demo footage.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CAIo3pdG14s']

While the gameplay on display here might lack any purpose, textures of much of anything really, the proof of concept is an exciting one, since the tribute game, while offering a surprisingly steep learning curve and deep three dimensional movement device mechanics, isn't particularly graphically impressive. That doesn't really detract from the game's fun, but we all love a bit of eye candy and if the mechanics of the tribute game could be applied to Unreal Engine 4, it would be a dream come true for many a fan of the anime and manga.

aot

The downside there, is that the developer doesn't really have any concrete plans to continue development, this was just a fun side project for them. However, due to the warm reception, they've promised to consider doing more.

One of the highlights of the announcement was the shooter's transparent development scheme and Epic is staying true to its word. You can now download and play Unreal Tournament in it's pre-alpha state.

These pre-alpha builds of the game were previously only available to those who subscribed to Unreal Engine 4. However, Unreal Tournament forum member, raxxy, has begun compiling a list of the game's builds and releasing them to the public. The best part is, Epic is completely fine with this happening and is taking all feedback in to account throughout the creative process.

It turns out that Early Access title and Kickstarter success, The Stomping Land, is not dead- it's just switching to a new engine. After months of silence, the developer behind the game has finally spoke out to combat recent rumors suggesting that the game had been abandoned.

The developer behind the title is SuperCrit, which promised regular community engagement and weekly updates on its Early Access page but until now, nobody had heard from the developer since the 30th of May and the game had not been updated on Steam since launch. The reasoning for this is that the game is currently transitioning over to Unreal Engine 4 in order to keep up to date with current graphics technologies.

stomp

Speaking with Kotaku UK, SuperCrit founder, Alex ‘Jig' Fundora, said:

“It has been quiet in The Stomping Land community but that is certainly not the case behind the scenes. The game is being moved to Unreal Engine 4 to take advantage of technical and creative opportunities, and while the game was so early in development, I didn't want to keep working for years with a game engine (UDK) that had officially lost support by Epic.”

“The move has put a bit of more work on my plate, but the already discovered opportunities using UE4 are exciting, and I'm confident fans will be satisfied with the long-run decision.”

Early Access is a risky business, buyers need to be able to trust the developer, which means that the team behind the game need to be transparent and regularly update the community, otherwise people freak out- as we witnessed in this situation. Hopefully SuperCrit will have learned from this experience and will make more of an effort to stay in touch with the community going forward.

KitGuru Says: Things weren't looking too good for a while there but at least we know that The Stomping Land is back on track and both Kickstarter backers and Early Access buyers have not been ripped off. Did any of you guys buy The Stomping Land? What would it take for you to trust an Early Access developer?

I myself have brought two Early Access games, Prison Architect and Rust, both of which are being worked on by developers I know will get the job done and post regular community updates. For me it's all about communication and transparency, what about you guys?

The clip begins showing us a blue haired girl, standing in a dilapidated looking street. She's got some very realistic eye movements and facial features, which is a big thumbs up for Epic, who's last gen engine didn't do faces quite as well as its visual rivals over at Crytek. She's then approached and greeted by a man who could have stepped right out of a Bioshock Infinite boss fight, before the pair ascend into the clouds in a steampunk like lift.

The very first Bioshock game was released seven years ago running on Unreal Engine 2 and while the game's visuals aren't bad, it certainly looks a lot better running in Unreal Engine 4. An Indie Developer who goes by “noodlespagoodle” on YouTube, has imported some of Bioshock's assets in to the latest iteration of the Unreal Engine and it looks amazing.

To refresh your memory, here is what the first Bioshock looks like:

Now check out the video:

As you can see, the update to Unreal Engine 4 makes the in-game assets look just as good if not better than some of the titles released in the last year. The developer wrote in the description of his video: “I've been itching to play with UE4… So I decided to gather up some of the original Bioshock assets and see how they'd look in a next gen engine!”

Since Irrational Games disbanded last year, nobody knows what the future of Bioshock is, in-fact there might not even be a future for the franchise but I don't think I'm the only one who would like to see a re-mastered release running on Unreal Engine 4. We will be seeing more games running on the engine soon too as Epic Games revealed that there will be a bunch of titles running on it announced at E3 later this year.

KitGuru Says: Unreal Engine 4 is our first look at the next generation of graphics and it is quite impressive. Would you guys play through Bioshock again with updated visuals?

The first major update for the Unreal Engine was rolled out yesterday, giving it official support for both Microsoft's Xbox One and Sony's PS4, meaning developers can get cracking on making UE4 games for both major consoles. Unfortunately for Nintendo though, there's no sign of Wii U support to be found.

Epic announced the news via its Unreal blog, where it explained how all developers can get their hands on the engine, and much more: “All Unreal Engine subscribers who are registered Xbox developers or registered PlayStation developers (including members of the ID@Xbox indie program) can receive access to UE4’s complete source code for their respective console platforms, at no extra cost,” it said.

As it stands, you'll need to be able to compile the code when developing your game for either system, since this first release comes in source code form. However, in the future, Epic plans to release support for binary-only development, making it easier for artists and designers to get in and chance things themselves without getting too technical.

UE4 already supports the Oculus Rift, which this new rollercoaster showcases perfectly

Epic also pointed out in the release, that the new Unreal Engine 4.1 also has support for Sony's unreleased Morpheus VR headset, as well as the Oculus' Rift.

When it comes to the Wii U, the lack of support with UE4, is likely linked with the console's underpowered internals, but considering we've seen the engine run in a Firefox browser and that UE3 with Batman: Akrham City and Mass Effect 3 were such big launch titles for the platform, you'd think Epic would find a way to make the new engine work.

KitGuru Says: This is good news for console gamers, since the latest Unreal engine is likely to be used in a lot of new games over the next few years, though it'll have to go some to outstrip its predecessor, UE3, which found its way into a large body of titles from the last gen.

Tim Sweeney, a legendary game developer, said in an interview that virtual reality technologies will have higher influence on video games than the smartphones had. At present the VR technology is mostly aimed at game developers, researchers, enthusiasts and early adopters, but eventually it will not only appeal to loads of people, but will have an extremely strong influence on the world of gaming.

“It is technology that I think will completely change the world,” said Tim Sweeney in an interview with Polygon. “I think it is going to be a bigger phenomenon than smartphones. You have to put it in perspective and realize we're in maybe the [first-generation] iPhone stage right now where you have this really cool device, but it has some real flaws that prevents it from being a pervasive device for everyone.”

oculus_oculus_vr_oculus_dk2_oculus_rift_vr_helmt

Mr. Sweeney did not reveal whether Epic is working on a title that will support virtual reality helmets, but confirmed that his company is researching the VR technology using the Oculus VR headsets. Keeping in mind that Epic has developed a number of demos for Oculus using the latest Unreal Engine 4 tech, there is little doubt that the company is interested in the VR gear in general and will add support for the tech into future titles.

“We are doing a huge amount of research in VR, working with Oculus kits,” he said. “We see this as a technology that will influence every game and every platform.”

It is pretty much obvious that virtual reality games should be completely different than games designed today, so there are plenty of things for game developers to learn. However, it will also be possible to create all-new types of video games and revolutionise gaming in many ways once the VR gear becomes widespread.

KitGuru Says: It is rather funny: virtually all leading game developers consider virtual reality an extremely promising technology. However, before VR headsets become popular (and that will take years), just a few companies will invest some moderate money into VR games.

If you're an indie developer that always wanted to build a game using the prettiest engines in the world, but could never afford it, then today's your lucky day. Both Epic Games and Crytek have announced that they're making their respective engines available to anyone for a low monthly fee.

Epic's system really opens the doors on its engine, giving you full access to the Unreal Editor and its entire C++ source code as well, for $19 (£11.50) a month. This can be used to produce games on a variety of platforms, from consoles to PC, to mobile and potentially browsers using HTML5 too. You'll also gain access to exclusive developer forums and a huge catalogue of pre-created samples, like textures, models and game templates, to help get you started.

They should get these two to duke it out, decide who's the best:

Over time, Epic will also be growing a marketplace for content, where indie developers will be able to purchase assets from one another that can then be used in-game. The only downside to it all, is that on top of the monthly fee, Epic wants five per cent of your gross revenue when you ship.

Crytek's scheme is a little more affordable, though perhaps offers a bit less since there is a free, non-updated version of CryENGINE available to all developers already. However, this fully updated and regularly so Engine-as-a-Service program, offers the latest CRYENGINE with all its new geometry cache, image based lighting and other upgrades for just $9.99 a month. Unlike Epic, CryTek won't be charging a royalty fee, though it isn't offering the library of content that the UE marketplace has.

KitGuru Says: If you were a little indie developer, which engine might you choose to develop a game in?

It's just over a year since Epic and Mozilla unveiled Unreal Engine 3 running in the Firefox web browser and it was impressive to say the least, as it ran at near native speeds, thereby making web deployment of high-definition games a reality. But now, with continued development pushing the efficiency of the asm.js javascript subsystem, the two companies have advanced web graphics into the next stage of their evolution, bringing Unreal Engine 4 to the scene.

Now, without a plugin or extension, any browser can play graphically intense UE4 titles through the browser, though in the Mozilla release, it's quick to explain that Firefox has extra optimisations to make it the best browser for gaming.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c2uNDlP4RiE']

“This technology has reached a point where games users can jump into via a Web link are now almost indistinguishable from ones they might have had to wait to download and install,” said Brendan Eich, CTO and SVP of Engineering at Mozilla. “Using Emscripten to cross-compile C and C++ into asm.js, developers can run their games at near-native speeds, so they can approach the Web as they would any other platform.”

What has some developers excited by the potential of web-accessible engines, is that it makes the barrier for entry to a game so much lower. There's no real downloading involved, beyond some initial files, but once those are saved locally, a player can simply dive in and start playing.

This big announcement by Mozilla and Epic was in part designed to get you to come along to their booths at the Games Developer Conference between 17th and 21st March, which are 205 and 1224 respectively. No doubt if you're attending, you'll be able to see more of the above.

KitGuru Says: This is pretty impressive, though It'll probably take playing a browser game that looks that good to get a real feel for it. Perhaps one of the most impressive browser games I've played has been Heroes and Generals, as it's pretty expansive and good looking and is similarly easy to get going – though it uses the Retox engine, not UE.
