Even though Microsoft Corp.’s Windows 10 operating system is available for free to those, who already use a recent Windows, the software giant actually sells licenses for the OS to system makers and end users. As reported before, Microsoft decided not to use DVDs to distribute its Windows 10, but to utilize USB flash drives. The latter recently hit Japanese retailers.

As it appears, retail versions of Microsoft Windows 10 are distributed on USB 3.0 flash drives of unknown capacities, which are shipped inside rather large cardboard boxes, reports Akiba PC Hotline. The Windows 10 USB drives are made of metal with a plastic knob. The packages with Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro are different, but users may choose whether to set up a 32-bit or a 64-bit version during installation.

microsoft_windows_10_usb

Some retailers sell Windows 10 USB versions below the official recommended prices of the OS (¥14904 for Windows 10 Home and ¥27864 for Windows 10 Pro) for Japan. It is also noteworthy that retail Windows 10 on USB drives are sometimes less expensive than DSP OEI versions of the operating system, which are sold with new PCs.

microsoft_windows_10_usb_1

Microsoft Windows 10 Home costs $119 in the U.S. and £99 in the U.K. Microsoft Windows 10 Pro is priced at $199 in the U.S. and £189 in the U.K.

Microsoft Windows 10 requires at least 1GHz processor, 1GB of RAM, 20GB of storage space, a display with 800*600 or higher resolution as well as a DirectX 9-class graphics processor with a WDDM driver.

KitGuru Says: As it appears, even though Microsoft is ready to abandon optical media, it is not ready to abandon physical media completely as it still needs 16GB – 32GB flash drives to distribute its Windows 10. But will NAND flash make optical discs obsolete when it comes to distribution of large games or movies? Only time will tell!

The post Not all USB type-C ports are equal: Nine versions of USB-C incoming first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
The reversible USB type-C connector is something that the industry has been waiting for since the introduction of the original USB bus in 1997. This year PCs, computer components and mobile devices finally started to incorporate USB-C receptacles, but not all implementations necessarily support all features introduced by the latest version of the USB specification. Apparently, there are nine possible implementations of USB-C ports with different functionality.

The latest Universal Serial Bus 3.1 specification introduces the new reversible 24-pin type-C receptacle as well as a number of innovative features that greatly expand usage of the USB bus, but retain full compatibility with previous versions of the standard. Key improvements of the USB 3.1 and the USB type-C are higher performance, improved power delivery, universal connector and vendor-specific capabilities. The key idea behind the USB 3.1 type-C is to create one interconnection that does everything.

usb_31_implementations_one

The USB 3.1 not only increases physical data signaling rate to 10Gb/s, but it also changes its encoding scheme to 128b/132b (inherited from PCI Express 3.0), which greatly lowers line encoding overhead to 3 or 4 per cent. In theory, peak bandwidth of a perfect USB 3.1 implementation could be as high as 1.2GB – 1.25GB/s. In addition, the USB 3.1 supports USB power delivery 2.0 specification, which allows one cable to transfer up to 100W of power to a device. Finally, USB type-C and USB 3.1 allow IHVs [independent hardware vendors] to implement their own functional extensions via Alternate and Accessory Modes to differentiate their products. Unfortunately, far not all features are compulsory for implementation.

usb_31_implementations_tb

As it turns out, the USB-C receptacle can be used with virtually any USB 2.0, USB 3.0, USB 3.1 or Thunderbolt 3 controller. This allows various vendors to build new devices without using of advanced, expensive and power hungry USB 3.1 controllers as well as appropriate power and signal management ICs. However, this means that different devices with the exact same connector will support different (480Mb/s, 5Gb/s or 10Gb/s) data-rates. Moreover, vendors may or may not add support for DisplayPort functionality via USB-C port, which means that select devices will feature display output, whereas others with the same port will not. Finally, some devices will support USB Power Delivery technology, whereas others will not. A good news is that the USB implementers forum has designed eight distinguished labels that describe capabilities of different USB-C ports. A bad news is that the presence of a USB 3.1 type-C connector does not automatically mean anything.

usb_31_implementations_cables_1

At present the only implementation of the USB 3.1 type-C connector that fully supports all features of the standard can be built using Intel Corp.’s “Alpine Ridge” controller, which also supports the company’s 40Gb/s Thunderbolt 3 technology. Ironically, to support all the capabilities of the USB 3.1 spec, IHVs have to use a controller that supports competing Thunderbolt 3 interconnection bus. At present Gigabyte Technology is the only maker of mainboards, which uses Intel’s “Alpine Ridge” on its Intel Z170-based platforms and supports all the features that the USB 3.1 has to offer with Thunderbolt 3 on top of that.

usb_31_implementations_cables

In addition to different kinds of USB type-C ports, there are different types of USB type-C cables, including USB 3.1 type-C to type-C cable assemblies with 15 wires inside as well as USB 2.0 type-C to type-C cables with 5 wires inside. A fully-fledged USB type-C cable is active, electronically marked cable, with an ID chip that contains vendor-defined messages (VDMs) from the USB Power Delivery 2.0 specification as well as other information necessary to support additional functionality. To make things even more complicated, there will be a host of legacy cable assemblies and adapters that will help to connect new devices to old systems as well as old devices to new systems.

thunderbolt3_presentation

Over time, all implementations of the USB type-C receptacles will support 10Gb/s data-rates as well as power delivery capabilities. However, nowadays there is a clear mess with different USB-C versions. The only way to get a device with a USB 3.1 type-C port done right is to get a product that supports Intel’s Thunderbolt 3, the port that truly does it all.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Different implementations of USB-C allow to build cheaper devices and make the new connector more widespread. However, such approach creates an incredible mess and confuses a lot of potential buyers and greatly devalues the USB 3.1 type-C technology in general.

Although virtually all leading makers of mainboards demonstrated their new products with USB type-C receptacles at Computex, it does not seem that makers of various peripherals are ready to embrace the new connector just yet. In fact, Patriot was one of a few companies at the trade-show displaying USB-C products.

Patriot’s tiny Stellar-C flash memory drives come in two capacities: 32GB and 64GB. Although the new drives boast with the reversible type-C connector and use USB 3.1 interface, their performance is limited to 110MB/s read speed and 20MB/s write speed, which is very slow by today’s standards. Many modern USB 3.0 SSDs feature considerably higher capacities and performance.

USB flash drives are among the most popular products with this interface. Eventually Patriot and other makers of such products will offer a wide range of devices with USB type-C connectors. Nowadays computers with USB-C receptacles are still rare, which is why Patriot is taking a cautious approach and is only rolling-out basic drives with the new interface.

patriot_usb_type_c

Even though Patriot’s Stellar-C USB 3.1 type-C drives can hardly impress, they are the first USB drives with type-C connector seen by Leo Waldock, a KitGuru editor, who visited Computex.

The Patriot Stellar-C drives will hit the market later this year. Prices are unknown, but do not expect them to be too high, given low capacities and slow performance.

Earlier this year Patriot introduced USB NAND flash drives with both type-A and type-C connectors.

Most of us have used an adapter at one time or another. Usually these are a square-peg-into-a-round-hole gizmo or a port multiplier that adds more USB or SATA ports. Generally speaking they are straightforward, unexciting and fairly cheap but they do a job and get you out of trouble, which is all that we ask from our hardware.

By contrast the range of SenseVision hardware from Club3D consists of products that are intelligent, expensive and rather impressive. The common theme is that the devices rely on the epic bandwidth offered by USB 3.0 and they fall into three categories which are Docking Stations, Multi Stream Transport Hubs and USB graphics. These respectively add new ports, redirect your video signal to a variety of ports or add new graphics connectors to your PC, laptop or tablet.

The hardware inside these devices relies on System on Chip silicon from DisplayLink which is certified for use with Windows 7 and 8/8.1 but not Mac iOS or OS X, even though we are told the hardware works perfectly well with Apple Mac. On the other hand the hubs, USB adapters and docks have been certified by Microsoft so they now carry the ‘Designed for Surface' logo:

PC owners can perform an upgrade to add new capabilities such as USB 3.0 ports or extra graphics connectors, provided we are prepared to spend the cash. By contrast a laptop or tablet is pretty much a sealed unit that relies on external devices such as the Club 3D hardware, and this is where things get interesting.
0-CSV-2302-USB-to-DP-KitGuru-Review-Packaging 1-CSV-2302-USB-to-DP-KitGuru-Review-Box 2-CSV-2302-USB-to-DP-KitGuru-Review-Driver 4-CSV-2302-USB-to-DP-KitGuru-Review-Unit

Club 3D sent us four devices that show the breadth of the range. The first is the USB 3.0 4K DisplayPort adapter model CSV-2302 which is £80 at ServersPlus. As we show in the video this is a simple way to add DisplayPort to a laptop or Ultrabook that has USB 3.0 and probably HDMI but lacks the latest and greatest graphics output.

There is a small amount of aggravation as you have to install the necessary Display Link Core v7 software and driver from an optical disc yet you probably will not have a DVD drive in your slender laptop or tablet.

Also, the price is a steep £80. That's a lot of cash for a single graphics connector but none the less we were were impressed.

KitGuru says: A brilliant device that delivers DisplayPort with the minimum of fuss and definitely Worth Buying.

WORTH-BUYING-300x300

Next we have the Multi Stream Transport Hub 1-3 DisplayPort model CSV-5300A which costs £76 at Amazon.

1-CSV-5300A-triple-DP-KitGuru-Review-Box2-CSV-5300A-triple-DP-KitGuru-Review-Inside 3-CSV-5300A-triple-DP-KitGuru-Review-Front-And-Back 5-CSV-5300A-triple-DP-KitGuru-Review-Instructions

So you have a single DisplayPort connector on your PC graphics card and want two or even three ports for a multiple monitor set-up. While that may sound fanciful it is exactly the situation found by your reviewer with a GTX 670.

The three way CSV-5300A fulfills the function exactly as it has a single DisplayPort plug at one end and three DisplayPort sockets at the other.

The curious thing is that while it does a fine job the very fact you need such an adapter probably means you would do better if you upgraded to a newer graphics card that has the necessary outputs.

KitGuru says: A handy device however it is tricky to picture the likely customer. That said, if you absolutely, positively need to run 3 DisplayPorts and only have a single output, then this is Worth Considering.

WORTH-CONSIDERING-300x300

We move on to the Y-cabled docking station with Multi Stream Transport Functionality model CSV-3203 for £119.61 at Amazon. (Other online stores had stock at lower prices but availability seems problematic).

1-CSV-3203-Y-cable-dock-KitGuru-Review-Box 3-CSV-3203-Y-cable-dock-KitGuru-Review-Inside 4-CSV-3203-Y-cable-dock-KitGuru-Review-Inside.jpg-Power-Adapter 5-CSV-3203-Y-cable-dock-KitGuru-Review-Front-and-Back

You need to read the documentation closely to confirm the CSV-3203 will fit the bill for you in terms of bandwidth, display resolution and refresh rates as this port multiplier can potentially do a massive amount of work.

At one end you have a Mini DisplayPort and a single USB 3.0 inputs and the hub then provides three USB 3.0, two Mini DisplayPorts and a Gigabit Ethernet port.

In other words it provides plenty of connections however you need to have the necessary Mini DP and USB 3.0 to kick things off in the first place.

KitGuru says: You can power an entire desktop using this Y cable device, however the emphasis on mini DP makes it rather cutting edge. If that fits your needs, then it's Worth Considering.

WORTH-CONSIDERING-300x300
Let's take a closer look at the Club3D SenseVision USB 3.0 4K docking station model CSV-3103D which retails for £120 at Alternate.

1-CSV-3103D-4K-dock-KitGuru-Review-Box 2-CSV-3103D-4K-dock-KitGuru-Review-Inside 3-CSV-3103D-4K-dock-KitGuru-Review-Inside-the-box 4-CSV-3103D-4K-dock-KitGuru-Review-Circuit-Shot-inside-4K-Unite

The final dock from Club 3D looks like a traditional device that has been brought right up to date. Using the supplied USB 3.0 cable you can convert a single port on your UltraBook to provide a long list of connectors.

For starters you get three USB 3.0 as well as a pair of headset jacks, Gigabit Ethernet, DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort.

That's an impressive list and the fact that Club 3D charges £120 for the privilege seems fair enough when you consider that's as many connections as you get on a typical small form factor PC.

KitGuru says: With a single USB 3.0 connection you can power pretty much any device you need.

WORTH-BUYING-300x300

If you want to add dual DisplayPort to your thin and light laptop or increase the number of USB 3.0 ports? No problem, just be prepared to spend £80 or more for the privilege.

Discuss on our Facebook page, over HERE.

KitGuru says: The takeaway from this review is that Club 3D has a large array of docks and adapters that each serve a niche market.

Seagate Technology on Sunday unveiled what it claims to be the world’s thinnest portable hard disk drive, the Seagate Seven. The new drive is made of stainless steel and has 500GB capacity. The manufacturer advertises its new product as the thinnest way to store half of terabyte of data. Being unique, the new HDD is clearly not really affordable, but it is not as expensive as ultra-thin NAND flash-based solutions.

The Seagate Seven external hard disk drive features SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface and, as the name suggests, is only 7mm thick. The product weighs 90 grams, which is less than typical smartphones do. Unfortunately, since the drive is not equipped with any wireless interfaces, it is not compatible with smartphones and tablets.

seagate_seven_external_hdd_2

The new Seven hard drive from Seagate is a unique external solution that uses a number of exclusive know-hows from the company. The design of the product resembles a bare HDD, which means that it does not contain an off-the-shelf hard drive, like other external storage products, but is a specially-built device that uses mechanisms from other hard drives. For example, the low profile motor technologies used in the “bare drive” were originally designed to include extreme Gyro handling capabilities with tablets and thin computing in mind.

The Seagate Seven is likely based on technologies originally developed for the Seagate Laptop Ultrathin HDD with 500GB capacity that comes in 2.5” form-factor and is only 5mm thick. The drive sports 5400rpm spindle speed, 16MB cache buffer, Serial ATA-6Gb/s interface, sustained 100MB/s transfer rate as well as 5.6ms average latency. The drive consumes around 1.4W during typical operations as well as only 0.47W in idle mode.

seagate_seven_external_hdd

“Seagate Seven is designed to speak to this history, while looking forward to the future of where storage technology is headed,” said Mark Whitby, senior vice president of Seagate Branded Group. “We believe that Seagate Seven will resonate with those who want the latest trend in mechanical design while inspiring the user to create great experiences and memories.”

The Seagate Seven will be widely available in mid- to late-January for a suggested retail price of $99.99. Pre-orders can be made on Seagate.com and Amazon.com.

KitGuru Says: While the Seagate Seven is clearly among the most technologically advanced storage solutions on the market, 500GB capacity is hardly a lot and is not sufficient for many use cases, especially keeping in mind that there are a lot of faster NAND flash-based storage devices of comparable capacity. On the other hand, if you are a road warrior with a MacBook Air and want to keep a small movie collection with you all the time, the Seagate Seven may be just what the doctor ordered…

The USB 3.0 promoter group this week announced the completion of the USB type-C specification that defines the next generation USB connector. The new plug is reversible and is considerably thinner than existing ones. Moreover, it will support up to 10Gb/s transfer rates as well as up to 100W power delivery.

The USB type-C connector is the latest evolution of the USB. Both the connector and the receptacle (which is 8.4mm*2.6mm in size) are reversible, more durable than the current ones (they are guaranteed to sustain up to 10K cycles) and feature improved EMI- and RFI-mitigation features. The USB type-C standard is compatible with all USB protocols, but since the new connectors and receptacles are not physically compatible with other USB connectors and receptacles, special passive adapters will be introduced. The release of the USB type C specification is the final piece in developing a single-cable solution for different kinds of devices.

usb_usb31_type_c

As expected, the new USB 3.1 type C will support up to 10Gb/s transfer rates as well as ability to deliver up to 100W of power to devices. The connector, cable and receptacle support scalable power charging. In addition, the USB 3.1 type C connector design will scale for future USB bus data rates.

The USB 3.1 type-C connector will be used for PCs, mobile (smartphones, tablets, etc.), automotive, consumer (cameras) and IoT applications.

usb_usb31_type_c_sq

“Interest in the USB Type-C connector has not only been global, but cross-industry as well,” said Brad Saunders, USB 3.0 promoter group chairman. “Representatives from the PC, mobile, automotive and IoT industries have been knocking down our door anticipating this new standard. This specification is the culmination of an extensive, cooperative effort among industry leaders to standardize the next generation USB connector as a long-lasting, robust solution.”

It is expected that the first applications with USB 3.1 type-C connector will emerge on the market before the end of the year.

KitGuru Says: The USB Type-C connector is just what the doctor ordered for the universal serial bus standard. The new USB connector can be plugged-in easily, just like FireWire/IEEE1394, Lightning or any other consumer electronics connectors without concerns regarding orientation. Moreover, the USB 3.1 supports up to 10Gb/s data-rates, which should be enough for almost any type of consumer device in the foreseeable future.

Although Thunderbolt interconnection technology is not an industry standard that is broadly adopted by all players on the market, it is an interconnection of choice for many creative professionals who work with large amounts of data. Thus, it is not surprising that Thunderbolt is evolving and becomes faster over time. Based on unofficial information, Intel Corp. will introduce third iteration of Thunderbolt with 40Gb/s bandwidth in late-2015 or early-2016.

Intel is reportedly working on the code-named Alpine Ridge controller for Thunderbolt bus that will increase maximum bandwidth to whopping 40Gb/s per single cable. The Thunderbolt 3.0 will rely on PCI Express 3.0 technology and will be able to charge devices and support two ultra-high-definition displays (4K, 3840*2160 and similar resolutions) by one cable, according to a slide published by Chinese version of VR-Zone web-site. In addition, the Thunderbolt 3.0 will support not only TB and DisplayPort 1.2 modes, but also USB 3.0 and HDMI modes (e.g., it will be possible to connect large TVs using Thunderbolt 3 and integrate USB hubs into TB-connected devices).

Since the next-generation Thunderbolt will bring so lot of innovations, it will use a different connector, so owners of current-gen TB-based devices will have to buy adapters to use them with new personal computers. The new Thunderbolt connector will be just 3mm tall and will thus be more suitable for modern laptops.

intel_thunderbolt_alpine_ridge_40gbps

The next-gen Thunderbolt interconnection technology will be designed primarily for Intel’s future-generation desktop and mobile PC platforms based on the code-named Skylake microprocessors. As a result, do not expect Thunderbolt 3.0 or Alpine Ridge controllers to reach the market earlier than in late-2015 or early-2016.

At present it is unknown for sure whether Thunderbolt 3.0 will use optical fibre for data transfers or will continue to rely on copper. Theoretically, Intel could continue using copper cables for short-range connections and rely on optical cables for long-range connections.

The Alpine Ridge controller will exist in multiple versions: one version will provide only a single Thunderbolt 3.0 port, another will support dual-port connector.

KitGuru Says: It is noteworthy that Intel and its partner Apple for some reason avoid integration of Thunderbolt support into chipsets and thus do not allow the technology to really become popular on the mainstream market and thus get more affordable. Each additional chip that costs PC markers $10 – $20 can transform into $50 – $100 for end-user because of various reasons and thus make certain technologies less appealing. Until Thunderbolt is supported by mainstream PCs, it will continue to be an expensive technology for professionals.

Corning this week said that it had begun to sell its optical USB 3.0-compatible cables that can extend data transmission beyond the 3-meter limitation of comparable copper cables. Corning’s cables can send data at up to 5Gb/s data-rate at distances up to 30 meters. Unfortunately, such cables are rather expensive.

The new cables are enabled by Corning ClearCurve VSDN optical fiber and are up to 50 per cent thinner and up to 80 per cent lighter than comparable copper cables, qualities that enable convenient transport. With a “zero-bend” radius, they can withstand bending, squeezing, and tangling without damage or loss of function, making them ideal for routing through the harsh environment of a crowded workspace.
corning_usb_3_optical_cable
Corning’s USB 3.0 optical cables feature special connectors that integrate custom chipsets as well as optical transmitters and transceivers. Since such hardware is quite expensive, the cables cost more than $100. Still if one needs to connect a USB device to a PC that is far away, it is virtually impossible to do it cost-efficiently.

As the chipsets inside connectors that convert USB signals into optical signals and vice-versa are custom-designed, they only support specific USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 standards and will unlikely work, for example, in USB 3.1 mode at 10Gb/s data-rate.

USB 3.0 optical cables by Corning currently come in lengths of 10 meters with “A-to-receptacle-A” connectors for maximum flexibility to connect devices with different USB connector form factors, such as B or Micro B with short adapters. Similar cables will also be available in lengths of 15 and 30 meters later this year.

Corning USB 3.0 optical cables are now available online through Accu-Tech and Amazon, starting at $129.

KitGuru Says: Optical USB cables are needed for special-purpose setups, so the price is not something that is important for current users of such interconnections. What is will be interesting to know is how significantly can the cost of such optical cables be lowered once cables like these are produced in truly large quantities?

Intel Corp. this week demonstrated the new reversible USB 3.1 type C connector that represents the future of the standard. The USB 3.1 type-C offers the same capabilities as the latest specifications do, but in a form-factor that is much more convenient to use.

The key feature of the USB 3.1 type C connector is that it is that it sports reversible plug orientation and cable direction, which means that users will no longer need to be concerned with plug orientation/cable direction, making it easier to plug in. The new connector is similar in size to the existing USB 2.0 Micro-B, but is incompatible with any existing USB connectors/receptacles. The new USB 3.1 type C receptacle opening will be about 8.3mm*2.5mm in size.

As expected, the new USB 3.1 type C will support up to 10Gb/s transfer rates as well as ability to deliver up to 100W of power to devices. The connector, cable and receptacle support scalable power charging. Besides the USB 3.1 type C connector design will scale for future USB bus performance.

usb_usb31_type_c

As the new USB type-C plug and receptacle will not directly mate with existing USB plugs and receptacles (type-A, type-B, Micro-B, etc.), the type-C specification will define passive new-to-existing cables and adapters to allow users to use their existing products.

The new USB 3.1 type-C interconnection may be considered both as the “USB done right” and “Apple Lightning done right”. The type-C plug is finally reversible and can be plugged-in easily, just like FireWire/IEEE1394, Lightning or any other consumer electronics connectors without concerns regarding orientation; while exact specifications of Lightning are not known, the interconnection hardly supports 10Gb/s transfer rates and 100W power delivery (its target devices – iPad, iPhone and iPod – simply do not need that lot of power).

usb_usb31_type_c_1

The USB 3.1 type-C standard will be finalized in mid-2014. The first application with type-C connectors may emerge later this year, but do not expect it to become mainstream until well into 2015.

KitGuru Says: The new USB 3.1 type-C is just what the doctor ordered for portable electronics that require small plugs and receptacles. Besides, the USB 3.1 features excellent usability and very high performance. An excellent standard.

Western Digital Corp. has announced its first portable storage solution featuring Thunderbolt interconnection. The My Passport Pro dual-drive storage device has user-selectable RAID functionality to deliver needed performance or reliability for the most demanding applications in the field, without the need for power adapters or extra cables.

WD MyPassport Pro is available in 2TB or 4TB capacities and incorporates two 2.5” hard disk drives. Unlike some competing solutions, the MyPassport Pro lets users choose data striping (RAID 0) for high performance or mirroring (RAID 1) for data redundancy, which allows it to address different needs of different users. The external storage is powered using the Thunderbolt cable.

wd_mypassport_pro_2

According to WD, maximum read/write performance of the MyPassport Pro is 233MB/s, which is a lot for a hard-drive (and is below what even the low-cost solid-state drives can offer). However, it is well below the speed the Thunderbolt interconnection can provide (up to 800MB/s). Therefore, it is not completely clear why WD decided to use the TB interface instead of USB 3.0 that is available more widely.

My Passport Pro will be available immediately at Apple and major consumer electronics retailers and e-tailers as well as online. Pricing for the 2TB My Passport Pro is $299.99 (£179) and the 4TB model is $429.99 (£259).

wd_mypassport_pro_3

KitGuru Says: The WD My Passport Pro external storage solution seems to be a decent portable device, which could ensure either high performance or maximum reliability. Its main drawback is, ironically, its main feature: the Thunderbolt interconnection. The latter is a fast, easy to use and reliable technology, but it is not yet widely available. As a result, the WD My Passport Pro is incompatible with loads of PCs that feature USB 3.0, but do not sport Thunderbolt. Moreover, with 233MB/s maximum bandwidth, the Thunderbolt is simply not needed for the WD My Passport Pro.

USB might be feeling a sting of jealousy due to Thunderbolt's transfer rates, but it isn't taking the development lying down. Sometime in the “middle of this year,” the USB 3.0 promoter group intends to make available a new standard of the platform, SuperSpeed USB, which will bring about a doubling of transfer speeds to 10 Gbps.

Compatibility with older USB hardware and connectors will remain, as you would expect from the USB standard. However new devices that support SuperSpeed will need to be bought/installed before the new performance enhancements can be appreciated.

SuperSpeed
SuperSpeed USB can go head to head with Thunderbolt in terms of data throughput

“With USB technology continuing to be the data and power delivery path of choice across personal computing and consumer electronics, we are always looking ahead to how to best improve user experience and connectivity performance,” said Brad Saunders, USB 3.0 Promoter Group Chairman. “Doubling SuperSpeed USB performance will be especially beneficial for emerging USB docking and storage applications.”

“This enhancement builds on the tremendous success of USB and expands its capability by doubling the data rate,” said Roland Sperlich, TI Consumer and Computing Interface Product Line Manager. “While maintaining backward compatibility, the 10 Gbps data rate allows users to do more with a universal standard that can be leveraged by many industries.”

KitGuru Says: It's all well and good releasing a new “standard,” but there aren't that many people that use USB 3.0 now. They aren't going to rush out and buy USB 3.0 + just because it's out there. It's a nice idea and makes sense for new system builds, but I can't see the adoption of this SuperSpeed tech being particularly fast.

USB 3.0 has been promoted heavily in recent months, but sales figures so far are not encouraging. According to market researchers In-Stat however this is due to change, very soon.

They are forecasting huge growth in the next year saying that close to 80 million peripherals should ship in the next 12 months with USB 3.0 support. According to their reports, this is thanks to AMD, who are releasing boards that integrate USB 3.0 into core logic chipsets.

Superfast USB 3.0 drives, we should start seeing more over the coming year.

Intel should step up soon by integrating USB 3.0 into the IvyBridge chipset next year. In-Stat's Brian O'Rourke said that incorporating USB 3.0 into the core logic chipset is very important to market growth because “It allows notoriously cost-conscious PC OEMs to offer it for free.”

Kitguru says: Are you using a USB 3.0 device regularly? Does your motherboard even support it? share below in the comment section.

After an eight year wait, the third version of the universal serial bus (USB) is finally available on the retail market. Sadly because of the high pricing – low end and many mainstream motherboards often do not often incorporate USB 3.0 controllers and many enthusiast users are unwilling to perform a major upgrade to their system just for USB 3.0 support.

Some would say that the high speed of the USB 3.0 controllers is currently only really useful for file transfers. What if you are one of those people who already have a high end PC with USB 3.0 support and perhaps a few, unused hard drives sitting idle?

Akasa have created two products which are just right for enthusiasts who want to adopt the USB 3.0 standard and especially for those with a couple of external storage devices.

First, the AK-PCCU3-01 PCIe extension card which adds two USB 3.0 ports to any system with an PCIe slot to spare. Second, the DuoDock S, the upgraded version of the very versatile HDD docking station. We are going to examine both devices and their performance thoroughly in this review.

Iomega have just announced a new series of USB 3.0 external Solid State Drives, ranging in size from 64gb to 256GB.

These new drives are based around an external enclosure offering superfast USB 3.0 speeds while remaining compatible with the older USB 2.0 interface. USB 3.0 is clearly the way to go if you want maximum speed but backwards compatibility is a good option when moving between machines without support.

The drives are also bundled with software which may prove useful – especially the Iomega V.Clone (drive cloning) suite which makes offline backups a doddle. They are also bundling one year free Trend Micro Internet Security Software or Smart Surfing software, Iomega QuikProtect (file backup), Roxio Retrospect Express and 2GB of Mozy Online Backup service.

Pricing is only mentioned for the USA market at this point, $229 for the 64GB version, $399 for the 128GB model and $749.00 for the 256GB. Iomega also offer a 3 year limited warranty.
