After spending years in the competitive PC FPS space with little to no competition, Counter Strike found an equal in the form of Valorant; the latest title from League of Legends makers Riot Games. Having grown over the course of the past few years on PC, Riot Games look set to bring Valorant to more PC platforms – as well as consoles.

As reported by Kingdom Laboratories, in datamining Valorant the content creator took to Twitter to reveal recently-added strings which suggest that the game could be coming to plethora of new systems.

If true, Valorant could be set to come to PlayStation; Xbox; Nintendo Switch; Linux and even iOS/Android.

As with many competitive shooters, Valorant requires very little hardware to play, being able to run on integrated graphics – meaning a Switch and even mobile port should not be out of the realm of possibility.

That said, competitive FPS games like Valorant have historically been PC-centric with a focus on mouse and keyboard controls. Riot’s shooter is no different, with the game not supporting controllers in any official capacity.

Considering the fact that this multiplatform release will seemingly be launched with crossplay support, much work will have to be done in order to ensure matches are relatively fair and balanced. We will have to wait and see whether this ultimately pans out.

Riot Games has cemented a position in the competitive shooter world with Valorant, directed by Joe Ziegler. Now, Ziegler will be moving on to a new challenge, leaving Riot behind and joining Bungie.

In an announcement this week, Ziegler revealed that he is now working at Bungie on “new stuff”. This doesn't necessarily sound like it is Destiny related and Bungie does have multiple other projects in the works. Alongside Destiny, Bungie is also working on a game called ‘Matter', in partnership with NetEase.

Beyond that, recent rumours have indicated that Bungie is working on a new ‘Marathon' game. For those who don't know, Marathon was a 90s Sci-Fi FPS game, released well before Halo. According to reports, the IP is now being revived as an ‘extraction' shooter with 3-player squads.

Bungie was acquired by Sony earlier this year, but its current and future titles will continue to be multiplatform.

KitGuru Says: Do you think this hire is related to Bungie's apparent plan to revive Marathon as a multiplayer shooter?

Riot Games has just made its latest studio acquisition – but not the kind you might be expecting. Rather than going out and picking up a new studio and IPs, Riot has simply bought out Wargaming's Sydney-based studio. That office will now become part of the Riot family and aid in the ongoing development of Riot's games.

Wargaming Sydney was previously known as BigWorld Technology and worked on various MMOs and online games over the 2000s. As PCGamer points out, the studio was acquired by Wargaming in 2012, and from that point, it has primarily worked on games like World of Tanks, Warships and Warplanes. Now after this acquisition, the company will now be known as Riot Sydney and will be working to support the development and online services for League of Legends and Valorant, as well as Riot's company-wide technical team.

Speaking on the acquisition, Riot Games President, Marc Merrill, said that the company is “excited” to bring on a new group of talented developers. This particular studio is one of the largest in Australia, and many of those responsible for building various tools are still working there. With that in mind, the talent present at the studio seems to be the main thing Riot was interested in getting.

Riot Sydney will be headed up by Naresh Hirani, who previously worked as a Game Director at Sony, and then rose up the ranks to Head of Development at Wargaming Sydney. All employees will be retained post-transaction, which is always nice to see, particularly in an industry where developer turnover is very common.

Today during the Xbox and Bethesda showcase, Microsoft announced a new partnership with Riot Games. Moving forward, all of Riot's titles will be available on Xbox Game Pass, giving subscribers premium access to games like League of Legends, Valorant and more.

On PC, League of Legends will be available on Xbox Game Pass with all champions unlocked. On mobile, Game Pass subscribers can play the excellent League of Legends spin-off, Wild Rift, with all champions unlocked.

Xbox Game Pass subscribers will unlock the Foundations card set in Legends of Runeterra on PC and Mobile, and you'll get some selected ‘Little Legends' unlocked in Teamfight Tactics. Finally, Game Pass subscribers can play Valorant on PC with all Agents unlocked.

We know Riot also has future plans to bring certain games to console, so perhaps when those titles eventually make their way over to Xbox, they'll end up being available on Game Pass for Console too.

In recent years, the biggest PC and console shooters have also released mobile counterparts, broadening the audience for these games quite dramatically in some markets. Like Call of Duty, Fortnite, PUBG, Battlefield and others, Valorant will soon be available on iOS and Android devices.

As reported by DannyIntel, Riot appears to have begun testing Valorant Mobile in China with a limited multiplayer test. In the gallery below, you can see some screenshots of the mobile version, including the UI and touch control interface.

Riot Games has found plenty of success on mobile in recent years with games like Wild Rift and Legends of Runeterra. Soon, it looks like Valorant will be added to that list.

Previously, Riot has also previously confirmed that it has prototyped a console version of the game, but an Xbox, PlayStation or Switch release has not been announced.

KitGuru Says: Judging by the screenshots, Valorant Mobile will be standard Valorant gameplay and maps but with touch controls. We've seen battle royale and deathmatch games find success on mobile, but can that be achieved with a slower, 5v5 competitive FPS?

Although there's still a lot of confusion surrounding Windows 11's requirement for TPM 2.0, Riot Games is already making sure gamers on Microsoft's latest OS will have the feature enabled. If you're playing Valorant on a Windows 11 system, Riot Games only allows you to run the game if you have TPM 2.0 enabled, even if you bypassed that requirement when installing the OS.

According to Anti-Cheat Police Department, Valorant players running the game on a Windows 11 system will have to enable TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot to “ensure a trusted platform”. Those running the game on Windows 10 have nothing to worry about for now, but in the future, Valorant might also demand Windows 10 users to run the game with TPM 2.0 enabled to fight against cheaters.

Even if you installed Windows 11 by bypassing the TPM 2.0 requirement and want to play Valorant, Riot Games still requires that you have TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot enabled. Otherwise, you won't be able to play Valorant.

If you're caught cheating and get banned with TPM 2.0 enabled, your device ID is blocked, preventing you from playing the game on the same PC, even if using a different account. However, Windows 10 gamers without TPM 2.0 enabled can still spoof the device ID after getting banned.

KitGuru says: Do you think we will see other games or applications enforcing TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot? Would you update to Windows 11 knowing that other games and applications might also enforce these requirements in the future?

Last year, Riot officially launched its own competitive first-person shooter, Valorant. Now one year later, the game has surpassed 14 million active monthly players and a version of the game has been announced for mobile devices.

As Valorant turns one year old, Riot has revealed that the game is now averaging more than 14 million PC players around the world each month. To grow the game even further, soon Valorant will spread beyond PCs and onto mobile devices, which will introduce millions of new players to the game in a new format.

Unfortunately, details on Valorant Mobile are still thin, but it is being worked on, so we should get more updates later this year. Speaking on Valorant's success so far, executive producer, Anna Donlon, said:

“One of our top goals this first year was to earn the trust and respect of the global FPS community, and to prove to them that VALORANT will always uphold the fundamentals of a truly worthwhile competitive tac-shooter. To see our growing player community recognize and appreciate what we’re trying to do with VALORANT is beyond what we could’ve expected and we’re thrilled to soon offer the same competitive VALORANT experience to even more global players.”

To celebrate the one year anniversary of the game, Valorant players on PC can log in throughout June to claim a number of rewards, including new cosmetics.

KitGuru Says: Valorant has been very successful in its first year and hopefully, that momentum can continue into year two. Do many of you played Valorant already? Did you stick with it or switch to another game?

Valorant is getting a big update today, introducing a new casual game mode to Riot's free to play shooter. The new mode is called Escalation and it is Valorant's equivalent of Gun Game, which is featured in other popular shooters like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Call of Duty.

In Escalation, players are placed on a map and start out with a powerful weapon. As players get kills, their weapons will be replaced with weaker ones, creating a challenging race to the top of the score board. In Escalation, players will work as a team in a 5v5 setting and will be able to use their agent's iconic abilities throughout the match.

Courtesy of Riot, here is the bullet point list of how Escalation works:

  • Similar to a respawning team deathmatch.
  • When the match starts, there is one randomly-generated set of 12 weapons/abilities which both teams must cycle through, roughly in order of ‘most lethal’ to ‘least lethal’.
  • A team must collectively get X number of kills/points in each of the 12 stages before they progress to the next one.
    • Upon progressing to the next stage, the player who got that latest kill to push the team over – automatically progresses to the next gun/ability in the cycle.
    • Members of the team who have already gotten a kill on a given level when it’s completed get a 5 second timer to press B (or their shop hotkey) to get the next weapon, after which they’ll get it automatically.
    • Members of the team who have not gotten a kill with that weapon will stay on the previous level until they get a kill, after which they’ll auto-upgrade to the next level.
    • If there is significant skill disparity, it is possible for “worse” players to be more than one stage behind. When they get their next kill, they progress to the next stage, not the latest team stage (ie they don’t skip any weapons).
    • One exception: for the final stage only, the whole team gets the final weapon/ability as soon as that stage is reached.
  • If no team has won after 10 minutes, the team in the lead wins and the match ends.
  • There is a 15-90s warmup in which players are given random weapons from the weapon set on spawn, it functions as a simple team deathmatch while waiting for players to load in.

Speaking on the new game mode, Kyle Leach, Valorant Engineer and Designer, explained the thought process in creating this new mode: “In designing Escalation, we wanted to create a quick, low stress Team Deathmatch mode with high uptime that's fun to play socially with friends. We're hoping to provide players with an opportunity to practice gunplay across the entire arsenal and experience some abilities in novel ways, while providing a shared objective that benefits from some coordination but doesn't require it for a team to succeed”

Escalation is joining Valorant on 17th of February via a game patch.

KitGuru Says: Have many of you been playing Valorant over the last year? What do you think of the new Escalation game mode?

Riot has been huge in esports for many years now thanks to League of Legends, so when the studio announced a competitive shooter, professional tournament plans were always going to follow soon after. This week, Riot announced the ‘Ignition Series', a pro-level tournament circuit for Valorant.

The Ignition Series will consist of multiple events taking place in different territories. The first will take place at the G2 Invitational, featuring eight teams from EMEA regions. The matches will take place between June 19th and June 21st, with each team competing for a €15,000 prize.

At the same time as the G2 Invitational, a similar tournament will be taking place in Japan- the Rage Invitational. This event will feature 16 teams battling it out for a top prize of 500,000 Yen.

In the last week of June, another EMEA tournament will take place and another invitational will also take place in North America.

The Ignition Series is just the first step in Riot's plan to turn Valorant into an esports giant. There will be more to come in later months and we'll likely see some even bigger, higher paying tournaments in 2021.

KitGuru Says: Valorant is already a pretty huge game, but further updates and continued interest from esports orgs are what will drive the game in the years to come. It will be interesting to see how well the first batch of Valorant tournaments go down. Will any of you be tuning in?

Earlier this week, Valorant officially came out of beta and launched across the world. For now, Riot's competitive shooter is only available on PC, but the company's interest in console is growing, so the game could end up on additional platforms.

Speaking with Gamespot this week, Valorant director, Anna Donlon, mentioned that the team is “definitely prototyping” the game for consoles, but there are still some things that need to be worked out.

“We are definitely prototyping that right now. But there's a way to play this game and there's a way to experience this game that we're not entirely sure translates completely to console play.”

“If we feel like we can deliver this experience on those platforms, we absolutely will, but we really want Valorant to stand for a certain type of gameplay and a certain type of experience.”

So if Riot can't get Valorant feeling as smooth and competitive on consoles, then that version of the game may never come. There are previous examples of this working well with Overwatch, but CS:GO on Xbox 360 was not a great experience, so we'll have to wait and see what happens.

KitGuru Says: I rarely enjoy shooters with a controller, so I understand the concern here. Perhaps an Xbox Series X version could work well though as the console will support 120Hz gameplay.

After a very successful stint in closed beta and some brief server downtime over the last few days, Riot’s new shooter, Valorant, has officially launched. Starting now, anyone can register a Riot account, download the game and begin playing.

Valorant is available in ‘most regions' and features a robust back-end for matchmaking. For starters, the game has dedicated 128-tick servers and all player movement is ‘upscaled' to 128 frames per second. The goal with this is to make matches all about player skill, without having to worry about netcode or server tick-rates causing problems.

As part of the Valorant launch, those who played the beta will have their progress reset, creating a level playing field for newcomers. Launch day also brings new content, including a new map, a new game mode and a new agent to try out.

You can download Valorant from the game's official website. It is a free to play title, but there are microtransactions in the form of premium currency, which can be used to obtain skins.

KitGuru Says: I played a little bit of Valorant in beta, but I ended up drifting back to CS:GO. I will be giving it another go now that it has launched though. Are many of you planning on downloading Valorant? Did any of you already play it in closed beta?

We've had a couple of big game releases recently and a couple more heading our way in the next few days, which means it is time for another GPU driver update. This week, the latest GeForce Game Ready driver has dropped, delivering optimisations and support for Valorant, which is leaving beta soon, as well as Minecraft Dungeons, Disintegration and Crucible.

Valorant as you all likely know is Riot's competitive shooter. It has been huge, with millions taking part in the beta over the last couple of months and millions more watching streams of the game. The latest driver ensures Nvidia GeForce GPU users will have smooth performance on day-one of the official launch.

Minecraft Dungeons is a new spin-off from Mojang, condensing the world of Minecraft into a dungeon crawling, Diablo-like format. Meanwhile, Disintegration is a new Sci-Fi strategy/shooter crossover from the co-creator of Halo. Crucible is another recent release, coming from Amazon Game Studios and combining competitive shooting with MOBA mechanics.

Games aren't the only big part of this update though. The new driver also supports the Windows 10 May 2020 update, as well as the DirectX 12 Ultimate API, which will be used for next-gen ray-traced games.

You can find more information and download the driver from Nvidia, HERE or via the GeForce Experience application on your PC.

KitGuru Says: I'll be hopping back into Valorant at launch to see how things have come along since the first few weeks of beta. Are any of you planning on picking up one of the new games coming out in the next week?

After a very successful stint in closed beta, Riot's new shooter, Valorant, is ready to launch. The character-based tactical shooter will be available to everyone for free on the 2nd of June.

If you were waiting for an open beta, then you are also in luck, as Riot Games will be opening it up to all available regions starting on May 28th, which will give the development team some time to monitor the back-end and ensure everything is ready to go for launch day without major issues.

Speaking about the launch, Valorant executive producer, Anna Donlon, said that this is just the starting point of a “decades-long commitment to servicing the global VALORANT community”. That starts off with the June launch, which will see a new map, a new game mode and a new agent added to the game on day-one.

The launch does mean that beta accounts will have their progress reset to level the playing-field for those who are brand new to the game. The June 2nd release date goes for “the majority of regions worldwide”, with any remaining areas set to get access to the game this year.

KitGuru Says: The Valorant closed beta was very polished and balance tweaks have been frequent, so it is not too surprising to see the launch approaching so soon. Did any of you play Valorant during the closed beta? Will you be hopping in on launch day?

A couple of weeks ago, Valorant beta players were quick to discover that the game's anti-cheat system, Vanguard, loads a kernel-level driver on your system, meaning the anti-cheat is present the moment Windows boots up. There were of course some security concerns around this, but Riot has been explaining its side of things and has now added a way to shut down Vanguard when you are not playing the game.

A Vanguard icon will now show up in the system tray in Windows, letting you know that the anti-cheat system has activated in preparation for you to play Valorant. From there, you can disable it entirely, or you can even uninstall Vanguard.

Of course, Vanguard is still required to play Valorant, so if you disable it, you will have to restart your PC before being able to play. If you fully uninstall it, the game will require you to re-install it first, so it isn't a perfect solution.

The concern here is that since Vanguard uses a kernel-level driver, it has higher system privileges and if vulnerabilities are found, it could lead to a security disaster for users. However, Riot is utilising security experts and consistent monitoring to ensure that doesn't happen.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Ultimately, it is up to you on whether to trust Riot's Vanguard system or not. On the one hand, this method should keep the game highly secure from cheaters, but if vulnerabilities are exploited, it could have implications that reach beyond the game.

There was once a time when DOTA 2 held the record for the highest concurrent Steam player count undisputedly. Over the last few years however, it has seen competition from other titles such as PUBG, which broke DOTA 2’s all-time concurrent record of 1.29 million players back in September 2017. CS:GO has now also surpassed DOTA 2’s figures, achieving a peak concurrent player count of 1.3 million.

CS:GO has been a fan-favourite title ever since it released all the way back in 2012. The first-person shooter really hit its stride in 2015 however, seeing concurrent player counts hovering around 6-700k users. Since late 2019, the game has seen a substantial resurgence, surpassing 1 million concurrent users for the first time on the 13th of March 2020.

Since then, its popularity has continued to grow, and on the 17th of April, CS:GO officially surpassed DOTA 2’s record concurrent player count with 1,295,971 (compared to DOTA’s 1,295,114 players). CS:GO has since risen even further, seeing 1,308,963 concurrent players on the 18th of April – with there being no indication of it slowing down any time soon.

There appears to be no specific rhyme or reason for CS:GO’s sudden rise in popularity, though some have attributed this surge to Riot Games’ Valorant, which recently launched in a closed beta.

Valorant, which like CS:GO is a free-to-play competitive first-person shooter, has been compared to CS:GO in a number of ways. Some have suggested that CS:GO may have seen this surge in popularity due to a perceived poor handling of Valorant’s beta access, with frustrated fans opting to play the game’s close competitor in the meantime instead. Regardless of the reason, CS:GO’s new record places it in second for the all time peak concurrent – only behind PUBG’s record of 3,257,248 players.

Riot Games has been granting access to the Valorant closed beta via the Twitch Drops system through partnership with a number of prominent streamers. Now, the system is active on any stream broadcasting Valorant on Twitch, meaning you can watch any streamer for a chance to get beta access and not just direct partners.

“Starting now, all VALORANT Twitch streams can drop closed beta access (as long as they are playing VALORANT)”, a new post from Riot reads. Beta drops are still running 24/7 and the number of streams that can grant them have increased, but the number of accounts being granted beta access is not increasing at this time. The number of accounts brought into the beta may increase over time as Riot ramps up additional back-end resources.

Right now, the Valorant beta is live for players in Europe, Canada, United States, Turkey, Russia and CIS countries. Soon, access will also come to Brazil, LATAM and Korea, with other countries to follow.

The final message from Riot this week reminds players that they are aware of the high demand for beta access and how it can be frustrating to not get access after several days of consistently watching on Twitch. It is something that the team is working to improve as the server infrastructure continues to be rolled out worldwide.

Back when Riot first announced Valorant, the studio talked briefly about plans to have ultra responsive servers and a proprietary anti-cheat system. Now we know a bit more about that anti-cheat system, as it installs as a kernel driver on your PC and activates as soon as your PC boots up.

The kernel anti-cheat driver is called ‘vgk.sys', so if you have Valorant installed on your PC, you may notice that in your list of background processes, even when not running the game. For comparison, systems like VAC, BattlEye and EasyAntiCheat all load up once you launch a game and don't run in the background after closing the game down.

One developer, known as RiotArkem on Reddit, wanted to alleviate concerns of snooping or unwanted file scans while not playing the game, giving the following explanation: “Vanguard contains a driver component called vgk.sys (similar to other anti-cheat systems), it's the reason why a reboot is required after installing. Vanguard doesn't consider the computer trusted unless the Vanguard driver is loaded at system startup (this part is less common for anti-cheat systems).”

The reason for this is that cheaters can bypass anti-cheat systems by loading the cheats themselves before the anti-cheat system has a chance to start. Running the anti-cheat driver at startup makes it harder for cheat software to tamper with the main game.

However, there are still understandable security concerns here, as a flawed driver with escalated privileges could spell disaster and provide an entry point for hackers to run rogue code without the user knowing. With that in mind, RiotArkem explains that the studio has consulted “multiple external security research teams” to review it for flaws. The driver component of the anti-cheat system is also supposed to do “as little as possible”, passing on the majority of the work to the non-driver component, which doesn't kick in until Valorant is actually launched.

The driver “does not collect or send any information” about the user's PC back to Riot and any cheat detection scans will take place when Valorant is running. With that in mind, it should not be scanning your PC in the background without your knowledge. Finally, the Vanguard driver (vgk.sys) can be uninstalled from your PC at any time, although the studio assures that it does not communicate over networks or collect information from your PC.

KitGuru Says: It doesn't seem that this will be a huge security issue, but Riot will need to keep its ears open to the cyber security community and act swiftly in the event of significant flaws, not just for the protection of the game, but for the protection of users that have it installed.

Valorant has been in closed beta testing for the last week now, with players getting to grips with the maps and how to stay competitive. With that in mind, players are wondering when ranked matchmaking will be added. The good news is, it should arrive very soon.

Currently, Valorant players can hold practise matches or take part in the standard matchmaking pool. Soon, a true competitive matchmaking mode will be added, according to one of the developers:

In the tweet above, one of Riot's developers says that ‘rated' testing is coming in a couple of weeks, so closed beta players will soon be able to start climbing the competitive ladder.

Valorant does already contain ranks too, so the foundation is there. There are seven main ranks: Mercenary, Soldier, Veteran, Hero, Legend, Mythic and Immortal. We don't know if ranking will be based on MMR, but likely will, as Riot is familiar with that system thanks to League of Legends.

KitGuru Says: I've been playing Valorant fairly regularly this week and so far, it is fun. It definitely shares a lot more with CS:GO than Overwatch. Have any of you played Valorant during closed beta? Are you looking forward to ranked matchmaking?

There is plenty of buzz surrounding Riot’s new shooter, Valorant. As a result, demand for closed beta access is incredibly high, leading to accounts being sold for over $150 on sites like eBay. Due to this, the ban hammer has been raised early, with a number of accounts being booted from the beta and freeing up access for those going through intended channels.

In a post going over the 48 hours since the closed beta launched, Riot explains that in order to support “a stable, competitive, high-fidelity gameplay experience”, it needs to “be careful about how many players we let into Closed Beta over the course of the next few days and weeks”. Those attempting to get into the beta via the Twitch drops system should also know that drops are granted randomly based on a stream view threshold of roughly 2 hours, so you don’t need to camp in streams for entire days at a time.

If you are looking to cheat the system and buy your way into the beta, then you may well run into problems. Last night, the Valorant team announced that it is already monitoring account sellers and issuing bans: “We are actively looking into account sellers. If you buy an account for VALORANT access, please be aware that your account could be banned before launch.”

The same goes for view botters camping on Twitch. These accounts are being banned and those spots in the beta are then being passed back on to those following the rules.

KitGuru Says: It can be tempting to pay your way into hyped closed betas at times, but since Valorant is not using a traditional key system, there is much closer monitoring on accounts, increasing the likelihood of sold accounts being caught. With that in mind, it is better not to risk it, even if you have the money to spare.

Riot Games has always had a high ranking on Twitch thanks to League of Legends but it would seem that the buzz surrounding its new shooter, Valorant, is pushing things even further. During the launch yesterday, 1.7 million concurrent viewers were watching various streamers playing the game on Twitch, rivalling some of Fortnite’s biggest streams.

At the moment, 1.7 million is the record for live concurrent viewers on a game, which was previously set by Fortnite during its ‘Black Hole’ event. Valorant is more of a competitive shooter though, aiming to compete with the likes of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Rainbow Six Siege.

Aside from being huge on Twitch already, Riot had another advantage when it comes to racking up views. Instead of having standard closed beta sign-ups, Riot asked interested gamers to connect their Riot accounts with their Twitch accounts and actively watch streamers. Then, beta access would be randomly given away to viewers who had their two accounts connected.

As noted by Dot Esports, it is likely that people set up multiple Twitch and Riot accounts in order to improve their chances of getting beta access. For now, Valorant will remain in closed beta for a while, before transitioning to a full free-to-play release later in the summer.

Four weeks ago, Riot officially announced Valorant and began closed alpha testing with a small group of esports professionals. Now, Riot is ready for Closed Beta, which will launch on April 7th, but you will have to jump through some hoops in order to play yourself.

The closed beta is limited to players in the United States, Europe, Canada, Russia and Turkey. The original plan was to open up the beta globally, but due to the COVID-19 outbreak, things had to be scaled back. More regions will be supported in the months to come though.

For the closed beta, Riot is partnering with Twitch. Essentially, you link your Riot account to your Twitch account and then watch highlighted Valorant streams taking place on Twitch and closed beta access will eventually be awarded.

The closed beta will contain an in-game store for skins and a premium currency known as Valorant Points. Progress from the closed beta won't carry over but Riot intends to pay back your points once the full game goes live with an extra 20 percent on top for participating in the closed beta. So for instance, if you buy 10,000 Valorant points in beta, you will have 12,000 points when the full game launches.

Currently, Riot Games is aiming to ship Valorant in Summer 2020, so this closed beta period could last several months.

After plenty of leaks over the past few days, today Riot officially announced ‘Valorant', the studio's new 5v5 tactical shooter. The full game is due to launch at some point over the Summer but there will be beta testing first, giving players a chance to try the game out ahead of time.

Valorant is described as a “free-to-play game of precise skill, high stakes, lethal gameplay and clutch moments”, so Riot is really hammering home the competitive aspect of this. Speaking of which, similarly to Counter-Strike, competitive matches are played out in a attackers vs defenders fashion in a ‘best of 24 rounds' format. You can check out a gameplay preview below:

Riot wants to expand that tactical shooter experience with unique character abilities that complement gunplay, so your characters won't be as bullet-spongy as they are in other hero shooters. The studio has also taken steps to ensure this is one of the best feeling shooters around with a solid netcode base and dedicated servers.

For Valorant, Riot is using 128-tick servers for all players globally and a custom-built netcode solution in an effort to ensure precise hit registration. There is also a custom anti-cheat solution, which will need to be strong as this is a free to play title.

We'll be getting more information on Valorant in the months to come, in addition to full details on beta testing as we approach the Summer 2020 launch window.

Last year, Riot Games went on an announcement spree, greatly expanding the studio's list of projects beyond League of Legends. One of those upcoming games is known as ‘Project A', a tactical first-person shooter. Riot has been a bit quiet on details since the initial reveal but leaks appear to be coming through now.

We already know that Project A is a character-based first-person shooter, similar to Overwatch or Team Fortress 2. A bigger reveal appears to be on the way though, with reports indicating that Riot's new game will be called ‘Valorant', a fan-run Twitter account has also popped up to track and post leaks. One such leak is ‘Sage', one of the hero characters supposedly in the game:

Sage is listed as a Sentinel, which appears to be a class type focused on support abilities. She can create barriers to shield teammates, fire ‘slow orbs' which slow down players standing within the area of effect. Healing orbs can be used to heal damaged allies or self-heal. Finally, Resurrection appears to be the ultimate ability, giving the option to bring back one dead ally to full health.

That is all we know so far but there is talk of a beta coming in early 2020, so we might just hear some official announcements in March.
