Sea Sonic is entering a new phase, as long-time CEO, Vincent Chang, is stepping down. He'll remain Chairman of the Board, but the CEO spot will now be filled by Eric Lan, who has previously held executive positions in Taiwan semiconductor and electronics companies.

According to the announcement, Lan brings “strong corporate and industrial management capabilities”, as well as extensive marketing experience, as well as experience in PSU research and development.

Previously Lan worked as the CEO of Leader Electronics, and acted as Vice President of Fairchild Semiconductor, also based in Taiwan.

This news follows on from Sea Sonic's ATX 3.0 power supply launch. The new Vertex series of modular PSUs offer everything you need to get started with next-gen GPUs like the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080, which use 12VHPWR instead of standard PCIe power connectors.

Panasonic Corp., which is not known for PC hardware, has quietly started to sell its own-brand solid-state drives in Japan. The drives are based on OCZ’s Indilinx Barefoot M10 controller and are most likely manufactured by Toshiba Corp.’s OCZ Storage Solutions in Tawan.

Akiba PC Hotline reports that at least one store in the famous Akihabara shopping district recently started to sell Panasonic’s Premium lineup of solid-state drives. The SSDs come in retail packages with bundled software and adapters to install the drives into desktop computers, just like all the other mainstream SSDs.

panasonic_ssd

The family of Panasonic SSDs includes 120GB, 240GB and 480GB models, features Serial ATA-6Gb/s interface and comes in 2.5”/7mm form-factor. The drives are based on OCZ’s Indilinx Barefoot M10 controller and, most likely, Toshiba’s second-generation 19nm MLC NAND flash memory. Performance specifications of the drives match those of OCZ’s Vertex 460 SSDs.

OCZ Storage Solutions, a subsidiary of Toshiba, has not announced that it began selling its SSD controllers to third parties, which is an important event and which can potentially have an influence on the market of SSDs and SSD controllers. Therefore, it is more likely that Toshiba decided to boost sales of its division and sell the Vertex 460 SSDs to Panasonic.

panasonic_ssd_1 panasonic_ssd_2

It is unclear why Panasonic decided to enter the market of solid-state drives in general. The SSD market is pretty crowded and the company can barely make a lot of money by reselling OCZ’s solid-state drives under its own trademark. Perhaps, Panasonic acquired unbranded OCZ Vertex 460 SSDs in a bid to integrate them into its laptops, but bought more than it needed. So not to lose money, Panasonic decided to sell the “extra” SSDs under its own brand.

The entry-level version of Panasonic Premium SSD costs ¥8980 (£51, $88, €65), which is more than a reasonable price for Japan.

KitGuru Says: If Toshiba decided to sell OCZ’s Indilinx controllers on the open market, then OCZ-branded SSDs will likely lose one of their competitive advantages, but the market of controllers will get a new player. Perhaps, Toshiba decided to sell unbranded drives in order to boost its sales of solid-state drives. In any case, the situation remains largely unclear.

OCZ Storage Solutions, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Toshiba Corp., on Wednesday introduced its all-new Vertex 460 solid-state drive family designed for mainstream/performance mainstream market segments. The new SSDs utilize multi-level cell NAND flash memory made using 19nm process technology, yet, they perform even better than the Vertex 450 SSDs launched in mid-2013.

OCZ Vertex 460 solid-state drives are available in 120GB, 240GB and 480GB capacities and feature Serial ATA-6Gb/s interface. The drives utilize proprietary OCZ Barefoot 3 M10 controller as well as Toshiba Corp.’s multi-level-cell (MLC) NAND flash memory made using 19nm fabrication process. While typically MLC NAND flash made using thinner manufacturing technology do not perform as good as MLC memory produced using thicker fabrication process, a combination of OCZ’s technologies actually made Vertex 460 better than its predecessor, which was powered by 20nm MLC NAND flash.

ocz_vertex_460_1_1000

The manufacturer claims that the Vertex 460 features new firmware tweaks that allow it to offer maximum performance (up to 540MB/s read speed, up to 525MB/s write speed, up to 95K read IOPS [input/output operations per second] and up to 90K write IOPS) after long periods of usage. In addition, the new SSDs boast improved performance under mixed read/write workloads which often occur during heavy multi-tasking. Finally, the new drives boast with SMART, TRIM, idle time garbage collection and 256-bit AES encryption.

ocz_vertex_460_specification

The latest SSDs from OCZ come in 2.5”/7mm form-factor, which makes then suitable for thin notebooks. Idle power consumption of Vertex 460 in 0.6W, whereas in active mode the drives can consume up to 2.70W.

ocz_vertex_460_specification_1

Thanks to usage of cost-efficient Toshiba’s MLC NAND flash memory made using 19nm process technology, OCZ Vertex 460 can also offer moderate pricing. The 120GB version will be available for sale in the U.S. for $99.99 (£60), the 240GB flavour will cost $189.99 (£115) and the 480GB model will be priced at $359.99 (£218). All OCZ Vertex 460 are covered with three year warranty and are rated for 20GB/day host writes.

KitGuru Says: While the OCZ Vertex 460 hardly offers significantly better performance compared to OCZ Vertex 450, in case the drive is able to sustain high performance even after years of usage, it will be a much better buy than a number of its rivals.

It's a bit like tasting porridge. For a desktop user, 60GB is not right and even though a 120GB boot drive can give you joy – it's not quite perfect. The size that makes you lick the bowl clean and head upstairs to test the beds is definitely 240GB. OCZ have been working with eBuyer and the result looks like a sweet dream to KitGuru.

While the Vertex 2 has been superseded by the Vertex 3 and 4, it's still a very good drive. When KitGuru tested its 100GB younger brother back in June 2010, it more than stood its ground against the Intel, Kingston and Corsair drives in its class.

One of the places where you notice adding an SSD most is in overall system responsiveness. For example, booting a desktop into Windows 7 with a 1TB Western Digital drive takes around 68 seconds – but the OCZ Vertex 2 will be up and running in less than half that time – at around 29 seconds.

At launch, the 100GB Vertex 2 was almost £250.

Now, eBuyer has the 240GB drive in at just £89.

That's an additional 20% off an already low price. Nice.

240GB is a great size to build your desktop system around - just add data/back-up drives and you're good to go

KitGuru says: Hard to argue with that price point, as 240GB offers a perfect drive size for most system builds – especially when coupled with a pair of 3TB 7,200rpm data/backup drives in a desktop.

OCZ have been at the forefront of Solid State drive development for a very long time now, the original Vertex and the Vertex 2 were both class leading SATA 3Gbps drives. We will be honest when we say that we have high hopes for the 6Gbps successor, today's review product, the Vertex 3.

The Vertex 3 was first highlighted by OCZ at CES in January and it uses the second generation SandForce controller to help utilise the SATA 6GBps interface. The official figures from OCZ are quoted at up to 525MB/s read and 500MB/s write, which are staggering, if accurate. Importantly, the 4k random write performance is also rated to a very tasty 60,000 IOPS.

When we compare this drive to the last generation Vertex 2 the performance increases are not just modest, they are staggering … over 90 percent faster on paper. Last year many had assumed that the SATA 6 Gbps interface had plenty of life left in it, but with this drive, the 600 MB/s limitations are already under question.

Product OCZ Vertex 3
Interface Sata III
Controller Sandforce 2281
Size 240GB
SSD Type Multi Level Cell
Trim Support Yes
Read speed (rated) 525MB/s
Write speed (rated) 500MB/s
MBTF 2 Million hours

To compliment the consumer model, OCZ have also released an Enterprise class drive, the Vertex 3 Pro, which uses the Sandforce SF-2582 controller and offers power loss data protection and data recovery protection.

The Vertex 3 we are reviewing today uses the SF-2281 controller which offers TCG OPAL security with 256bit AES encryption and an improved ECC engine (capable of correcting up to 55 bits per 512 byte sector).

All of the SandForce SF-2000 series controllers still utilise the patented DuraWrite technology, on the fly compression which reduces the size of the data written to the drive. When this is paired up with wear leveling and intelligent block management the drive will require fewer write cycles during regular use.

KitGuru's like speed. SSD delivers speed in buckets. Few companies took off with the idea of SSD as fast as OCZ. Given that the leader into this market was Intel, with the stunningly good X.25, we think that OCZ has done a great job of jostling for first place in this seriously difficult market sector.

Tucked into a side room on the 10th floor of the Grand Hyatt in Taipei, OCZ had a surprisingly full line up of new products, including the latest Vertex 2 – designed for notebook users whose laptops need steroids.

KitGuru zooms in on the action

Should we be surprised that the 1.8” drive has exactly the same performance characteristics as its big brother?  Probably not. The only limitation (if you can call it that) will be size. Initially, these drives won’t be larger than 240GB, but with 285MB/sec read and 275MB/sec write, who’s gonna quibble about size?

Inside track, Vertex 2 spec

KitGuru says: Damn! Just when you thought it was safe to be happy with the notebook you got – OCZ’s gotta pull something like this out its butt. Now we’re all envious that the Vertex 2, at just 1.8”, is packing more meat than us!
