At the start of 2020, the UK video game charts went through a major change, switching from GfK to UKIE/GSD tracking, which counts physical sales as well as digital sales when those figures are made available. The numbers are now in for last week's sales, with Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot remaining at the top, The Witcher 3 continuing to rise and a few other interesting additions.

January typically isn't the strongest month for video game sales, as the year's biggest releases are still some ways off and consumers drop off after a big spike over the holiday season. With that said, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot has managed to maintain its number one spot in the UK, beating out Call of Duty: Modern Warfare for the second week in a row.

Meanwhile, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt continues to rise thanks to the additional interest generated by the Netflix TV series. Last week, The Witcher 3 sat at number 20 in the top 40 but as reported by Gamesindustry.biz, the game now sits in the 12th spot, just missing out on re-entering the top ten.

Here is the full top ten for the week ending on January 25th:

  • Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot.
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
  • Grand Theft Auto V.
  • FIFA 20.
  • Just Dance 2020.
  • Mario Kart 8: Deluxe.
  • Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order.
  • Minecraft.
  • Luigi's Mansion 3.
  • Mario & Sonic At The Tokyo Olympic Games 2020.

Some Nintendo Switch games saw a dip last week due to a shortage in console availability. Notably, Mario Kart 8: Deluxe took a rare exit from the top ten. That changed this week as Switch hardware availability improved.

KitGuru Says: I have been playing a lot of Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot over the last couple of weeks and while it certainly has some flaws, I'm glad to see it doing so well here in the UK. The Witcher 3 continuing to rise back through the ranks is also great to see. Have any of you picked up some new games recently? What are you currently playing?

Aside from E3 dominating the gaming news cycle throughout June, we also had some major game launches in the last few weeks. Not only have we seen the likes of Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, but Nintendo just released one of its biggest exclusives for the year- Super Mario Maker 2, which has debuted at the top of UK charts.

Following on from the success of Super Mario Maker for the Wii U in 2015, Super Mario Maker 2 brings the game over to the Nintendo Switch and expands on the tools available to players and adds in a new story mode. The biggest benefit here of course is the fact that the game is now available on the Switch, which has already outsold the Wii U in lifetime sales, giving the sequel a much bigger customer base to sell to.

Super Mario Maker 2 has debuted at the top of UK video game sales charts for last week, knocking Crash Team Racing down from its previous spot. The full top ten can be found below:

  1. Super Mario Maker 2
  2. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fuelled
  3. F1 2019
  4. Judgement
  5. Mario Kart 8
  6. Red Dead Redemption II
  7. Grand Theft Auto V
  8. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
  9. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night
  10. Super Smash Bros Ultimate

As you can see, Nintendo is doing incredibly well on the UK market this week. Not only is Super Mario Maker 2 at the top of the physical game sales charts, but Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros Ultimate are both continuing to chart well. Other highlights include Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA V continuing to pull in big numbers for Take-Two/Rockstar and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey receiving a spike back into the top 10 after dropping out.

KitGuru Says: The weekly game sales charts are always interesting to take a look at. Did any of you pick up Super Mario Maker 2 over the weekend? I’ve grabbed it myself but haven’t got around to creating any levels yet. If any of you have made some, feel free to share them, I would love to take a look!
