While many fans have been waiting patiently for Nintendo's Switch Online service to finally arrive, there is one other feature that is often highly requested- virtual console. Over the last few console generations, Nintendo has used Virtual Console to bring back older and beloved games from its back catalogue. Unfortunately, Nintendo isn't planning on including this with the Switch, but that doesn't rule out classic games coming to the console in other forms.

The Wii, 3DS and Wii U each had their own versions of the virtual console over the years, offering selections of NES, SNES, Nintendo 64 and even Gameboy titles. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like the Switch will be getting the same treatment. Last night, a Nintendo spokesperson told Kotaku that “there are currently no plans to bring classic games together under the Virtual Console banner as has been done on other Nintendo systems”.

Nintendo-Switch11.jpg

The statement doesn't shoot down the idea of classic games returning on the Switch, but it does indicate that perhaps Nintendo is done with the ‘virtual console' system. For instance, a library of older NES titles will be made available for download to subscribers of the Switch Online service. A slew of classic Neo-Geo games have also been re-released on the Switch in the past year.

Perhaps we'll see Nintendo continue to add classic games to the Switch Online library, or just plain re-releases of older games for the e-shop with virtual console removed from the equation.

KitGuru Says: Many Nintendo fans have been surprised by the lack of virtual console on the Switch so far. While there are plenty of possibilities for VC replacements, this could also end up being misdirection for an announcement a little later on. Whatever the case is, hopefully we'll learn more about Nintendo's plans in the coming months.

It seems that Nintendo is being sneaky with its Switch OS version 4.0, flying features under the radar since it released last week. Alongside the quickly discovered USB headphone support, it seems that the GameCube controller is now compatible with the Nintendo Switch.

To make use of a GameCube controller with the Switch, of course you’ll need to use the USB adaptor, but the Switch OS natively recognises and utilises the controllers once they are plugged in. While it registers simply as “USB” without allocating the device its proper name, other USB controllers such as the Xbox 360 controllers still won’t work.

It’s been speculated that the Switch would be able to run GameCube games within its Virtual Console at some point, indicating that this could possibly hint at the expected arrival of the emulator in the near future.

GameXplain showcases the GameCube controllers being used for the brand new Fire Emblem: Warriors on the Nintendo Switch.

Excitement for the inevitable arrival of the Virtual Console began to build last month when it was revealed that Nintendo has been building on top of its NES emulator, already nestled within the console, as well as bringing classic arcade games to the platform. Unfortunately, the Switch has been severely lacking the usual Nintendo functionality during its 7-month life, which is surprisingly longer than it took to bring the feature to the now-defunct Wii U.

The lack of a Virtual Console has since been attributed to Nintendo focusing on its NES and SNES Classic, according to fans, although no official statement has been released on the matter. In the meantime, it seems that the hidden features in the Switch OS version 4.0 are more interesting than the flaunted features. It will be interesting to see what else can be discovered in the near future.

KitGuru Says: Even minus GameCube titles, I would like to see a Virtual Console make its way to the Switch sooner rather than later. Perhaps the release of Super Mario Odyssey will quell these desires for the time being, but so far, the Switch is feeling a lot lighter than it should for almost a year later.

Earlier this week, a fairly interesting discovery was made on the Nintendo Switch. Some users managed to unearth a hidden copy of NES Golf embedded in every console. At the time, we were unsure why this Easter egg existed but as it turns out, it is actually a tribute to Satoru Iwata, Nintendo's late president who sadly passed away back in 2015.

The folks over at Switchbrew managed to figure out how to launch the game and its connection to Iwata. To launch the game, both Joy-Cons need to be detached from the Switch, you will then need to make a simple hand gesture, the same one Iwata used to greet fans at the start of a Nintendo Direct stream. Successful activation will trigger a sound byte of Iwata taken from an earlier presentation.

Finally, to actually get NES Golf to fully load, you also need the date to be set to the 11th of July, which is the day Iwata passed away. Getting past this requirement can be tricky as the Switch uses server-side time synchronisation. The easiest way to do it would be to take a new Switch out of the box and not connect it to the internet.

For those unaware, NES Golf is a game that Iwata coded himself. Over in Japan, people are referring to this as an ‘Omamori', which would be a form of good luck charm. As Justin Epperson points out on Twitter, in Japanese culture, Omamori are bought at shrines in the belief that keeping one close to you will provide good luck. Essentially, Iwata's game being embedded in every Switch is supposed to symbolise his spirit watching over every console and providing good luck and protection.

KitGuru Says: Iwata clearly meant a lot to both fans of Nintendo and the people at the company. Tributes like this are always going to be heartwarming to see.

Nintendo Switch owners have been waiting patiently for the company to implement its Virtual Console, giving the ability to play old school games on the go. Excitement has been raised once again, as fans have found a fully-fledged NES emulator nestled inside the Switch’s system ROM.

Last week, the Nintendo Direct event revealed that the company is going to bring a selection of its classic arcade games to the Switch, mostly comprised of its Vs. series. Since then, fans have dug into the console’s code to find a fully working NES Golf, complete with Joy-Con motion controls.

Previously, we knew that these classic games would make use of the Joy-Con’s detach-ability to enable for local multiplayer, but the addition of motion controls marks the first time that Nintendo is blending classic games with new technology. While this makes a lot of sense for NES Golf, where movement is key to strike with varying force, how this would work on other NES games remains to be seen.

Switch user Yellows8 claims to have discovered the hidden game originally, stating that the game has to be accessed “unofficially.” This is to be taken with a pinch of salt, however, as they have yet to actually reveal said backdoor into the software. Switchbrew has confirmed the existence of the emulator, with the game tentatively titled ‘flog’, which is golf spelled backwards.

Nintendo is notable for bringing its Virtual Console later in a console’s life cycle, with the Wii U receiving the function 6 months after its release. Later this month will also mark 6 months since the Switch was released, so hopefully it won’t be too much longer.

KitGuru Says: I will admit that I am more excited at the possibility of Gamecube games making their way to the Switch over the NES games we’ve seen numerous times on Virtual Console, but at this point I’d like either to just be announced in an official capacity. What would you like to see release on the Switch’s VC?

Over the years, the Virtual Console has become a staple part of Nintendo's software lineup. We are still eagerly awaiting its arrival on the Nintendo Switch but in the meantime, we will be able to enjoy a new feature known as ‘Arcade Archives', bringing classic Nintendo arcade games to the console.

During a Nintendo Direct stream last night, Nintendo confirmed several arcade games coming to the Switch, including: Vs. Pinball, Vs. Clu Clu Land, VS. Balloon Fight, Vs. Ice Climber and of course Vs. Super Mario Bros.

Each of these games will take advantage of the Joy-Cons. If you want to play some local co-op, you can hand one of the Joy-Cons to a friend for multiplayer.

The Arcade Archives are launching on the 27th of September, though Nintendo didn't share pricing information.

KitGuru Says: This seems like a good first step towards getting the virtual console on the Switch, even if Nintendo is still keeping quiet on that subject. Have you guys been keeping up with the news coming out of Nintendo's Direct stream last night? Is there anything that has you excited?

The GameCube may have been a slight under performer in terms of sales during its generation but the little system did receive more than a few great games at the time. Unfortunately, many of these games were left behind during the Wii U generation, which removed backwards compatibility but that may be rectified with the upcoming Nintendo Switch, which will apparently run GameCube games through the virtual console.

This means games like Luigi's Mansion, Super Smash Bros. Melee and Super Mario Sunshine will be playable and downloadable on the Nintendo Switch when it arrives in March. This is according to three separate sources speaking with Eurogamer, who have had a pretty good track record throughout 2016.

Those three titles are already working and next, Nintendo will be turning its attention to the GameCube version of Animal Crossing. More popular titles will then be added over time once the Nintendo European Research and Development team can get round to them.

If you happened to buy any virtual console games on prior consoles, then Nintendo will apparently be putting an upgrade program in place so you can re-download the games on Switch without having to make another purchase.

KitGuru Says: There is still a lot to learn about the Nintendo Switch and there isn't really a lot of time left for Nintendo to start spilling the beans. Fortunately, these leaks seem to be pretty on-top of things. Are any of you thinking about grabbing a Nintendo Switch next year?

I would report about this tomorrow, but of course it's Saturday and I won't be around to give you guys the heads up, so here it is a day early: The Wii U Virtual Console is arriving in the UK tomorrow, bringing with it the ability to play old Nintendo games on the new console.

On top of that though, the games receive a minor contemporary update, allowing you to save whenever you want, play on the Gamepad remotely and link up with the Nintendo community via the Miiverse.

virtualconsole

Some of the available titles include Super Mario World, F-Zero, Donkey Kong Jr, Excitebike, Ice Climber and Mario's Super Picross – the latter of which is a UK exclusive so far. Upcoming releases include Street Fighter, Super Mario Bros and games from the MEga Man series. N64 and Game Boy Advance titles won't be far behind.

Pricing wise, MCV has it that NES games will cost £3.49 to first time buyers, or 99p if they've bought them previously on the Wii. SNES will have the same discounted cost for original owners, or £5.49 for new ones. However you can also transfer over your games from the Wii and play them in Wii mode if you wish.

KitGuru Says: Good to see this is happening as opening up retro gaming to more people is great, but I'd still suggest if you really want to get into it, that you get the original consoles and controllers. The experience just doesn't compare.
