Some highly anticipated features were just added to the SteamOS 3.5 preview update. Besides the updated firmware and updated OS base, the new preview update also brings new display features and various bug fixes.

The updates begin with the underlying Arch Linux version, which includes support for the latest KDA Plasma 5.27 and an enhanced Steam Deck's Desktop Mode. There are also adjustments to the tiling and widgets. Additionally, the system now supports HDR output for external displays and VRR, which Steam Deck's main screen does not. According to Steam, this functionality needs a USB-C adapter to function.

Deck's colour rendering is now simulated to the sRGB colour gamut, so users may see a warmer screen after installing the preview update. Users who prefer the previous colour appearance may simply alter them by accessing “Added Settings” > “Adjust Display Colors” and selecting the “Native” option.

Starfield also deserved some particular attention in this update. Even if it wasn't built to work with iGPUs, AMD and Valve's driver teams did their best to improve performance on Steam Deck. Additionally, the update comes with various fixes, including one for the 400/200 MHz bug found when the Deck was running a low TDP profile, causing CPU and GPU frequency to be locked at low settings. SteamOS 3.5 is now available for download via the Preview channel.

The full changelog for Steam Deck's SteamOS 3.5 preview update can be found below:

Display

  • The default color rendering for Steam Deck has been adjusted to emulate the sRGB color gamut, resulting in a slightly warmer and more vibrant colour appearance.
  • Added Settings -> Adjust Display Colors, to tune the display’s Color Vibrancy and Color Temperature. The settings can be tuned with a preview of a test image (above), or with your running game.
    • Native: The native display colour appearance (the colour rendering for Steam Deck prior to this update).
sRGB: Emulate the sRGB primaries, in a smooth manner that does not introduce gradient clipping.
    • Boosted: Emulate a wider-gamut display appearance, resulting in increased apparent vibrance. May result in gradient clipping.
  • HDR can now be enabled in Display Settings if supported by the external display.
  • VRR can now be enabled in Display Settings if supported by the USB-C adapter.
  • Reworked Quick-Access scaling settings to separate scaling from filtering. Added Stretch and Zoom scaling as new options to handle different aspect ratios.
  • Fixed touchscreen orientation while external display is connected.
Compositing is now avoided in additional scenarios, reducing latency and stutter in situation with multiple overlays on screen.
  • Improved latency in certain situations where the application renders slower than the display’s refresh rate.

General

  • Fixed an issue where certain workloads would exhibit severe CPU performance issues unless SMT was manually disabled.
  • External storage devices are now auto-mounted when connected to Steam Deck. To format or manage storage devices use the new device management interface in Settings->Storage.
  • Updated graphics drivers, with many performance and functionality improvements. Improved performance for Starfield. Fixed viewmodel corruption in Amnesia: The Bunker and launch failures for Immortals of Aveum and Kaiju-A-GoGo.
  • Improved Bluetooth connection stability, especially with multiple controllers
  • Slightly improved sleep resume speed
  • Implemented switching between controller bindings and mouse/keyboard desktop bindings by long-pressing Options in the Linux hid-steam driver, to match Steam’s default Desktop configuration.
  • Improved fade transitions between applications.
  • The contents of the performance overlay can now be customised by creating a ~/.config/MangoHud/presets.conf configuration file.
  • Fixed a bug where some games could appear stretched if their window size didn’t match their swapchain size (eg. Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 4)
  • Fixed Disgaea PC needing to be tapped on before input works
  • Fixed physical dimensions reported to games, fixing some issues with an incorrect aspect ratio sometimes being detected (eg. Returnal)
  • Worked around a problem where Allow Tearing could cause heavy stuttering if the Performance Overlay or other overlays appeared on screen. Tearing is now impossible in such situations, and the Performance Overlay should be disabled for best results.
  • Fixed a problem where keyboard input would not be detected in Overwatch 2
  • Controller firmware: fixed an issue where some thumbstick touch sensors would lose touch periodically

Firmware 116

  • Added voltage offset settings.
  • Improved robustness of the Firmware Settings Reset chord (Volume Down + Quick-Access + Power) against some boot hang scenarios.
  • Fixed a rare issue that would set the processor TDP limit too low causing CPU and GPU frequencies to be stuck at 400 MHz and 200 MHz respectively.
  • Fixed an issue when the charging light would turn back on when plugged in for a while after fully charged.

Updated Arch Linux Base

  • This update pulls in newer performance, security and stability fixes for the underlying packages that are the foundation for SteamOS
  • Most notably, this includes recent changes to KDE Plasma, Steam Deck’s Desktop Mode. Full notes on these updates can be found on KDE’s website here. Here are a few of the highlights:
    • New window tiling system
    • Updated Discover (app store / software manager) with a new homepage and improved search
    • Discover can now perform system updates from the desktop
    • Updated desktop widgets

While the Xbox has supported 1440p displays for years, Sony has stuck to supporting the most common TV resolutions, 4K/UHD and 1080p on PlayStation. After many requests from PlayStation players, Sony is now enabling 1440p support on PS5.

The 1440p update arrives today for PlayStation software beta testers. The update also brings curated game lists to better organise your library, as well as some new social features. While 1440p support is arriving, unfortunately Sony won't be enabling variable refresh rate at this resolution, but no specific technical reason has been given for this.

These new game lists allow players to create categories for their library, so you can separate backlog games from titles you are currently playing, or separate your physical and digital games for easier navigation. You can create up to 15 custom game lists in total for your library. Sony is also adding a new 3D Audio and Stereo comparison to the PS5 settings menu, so you can compare the two to see the difference it makes.

Some of the new social features seem inspired by Steam Chat, including the ability to request a friend to stream their gameplay to you. There will also be new notifications to show when you can join a friend's on-going game.

The software beta could last for several months, but these features should roll out to all PS5 users within the next few months.

KitGuru Says: A lot of PS5 games have modes that run at 1440p, so natively supporting the resolution makes a lot of sense, particularly for those who like to hook up their consoles to the same display as their gaming PC, although the lack of VRR support is a bit disappointing.

Ever since release, the developers behind Horizon Zero Dawn have been working on patches and quality of life updates. The latest patch is arriving this week, and it includes two particularly major improvements – VRR support and a 120Hz mode.

With Patch 1.17, Horizon Zero Dawn now has a high refresh rate mode, allowing players to run the game at up to 120Hz. There is also a new 40Hz mode for better V-sync with 120Hz displays, similarly to the 40Hz mode included with Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart last year.

The patch also adds support for Variable Refresh Rate, which allows the display to better sync with the console to eliminate screen tearing and reduce stuttering. This couldn't be included at launch as Sony was still working on enabling VRR on the PS5. Fortunately, the feature finally arrived in April.

Aside from these two headlining improvements, the developers have also squashed a good number of bugs. You can see the full patch notes, HERE.

Following the announcement that Variable Refresh Rates are finally supported by the PS5, Insomniac Games announced an update to their recent Spider-Man games, adding VRR support, but also a great deal more.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered update version 1.007 stealth dropped onto PS5 consoles, adding a whole number of major improvements thanks to the recent addition of VRR support. Firstly, as with many other Insomniac Games titles, Spider-Man Remastered now offers a 40fps mode, allowing you to play the game at higher resolutions while still maintaining a smoother than 30fps experience (assuming you have a 120hz display).

Thanks to the new support for VRR, Spider-Man Remastered now features Improvements to ray-traced reflection quality at glancing angles in low-dynamic-resolution scenarios. Additionally, when 120 Hz Display Mode is off, dynamic resolution targets have been increased.

Upon activating the 120hz mode, “you will get a variable, uncapped frame rate that can exceed your chosen Graphics Mode's 30 or 60 fps target by 50% or more.”

The potential of VRR is great, allowing for a smoother and more consistent experience across the board. With the PS5 now supporting VRR, the console’s next-gen experience can finally be truly realised.

When the PlayStation 5 was first released, one of the primary features intended to make the console a next-gen experience was the use of a variable refresh rate on TVs that supported the functionality. After almost a year and a half on the market, the PS5 is finally getting VRR this week.

Making the announcement on the PlayStation Blog, Sony’s Senior Vice President, Platform Experience Hideaki Nishino said “Today, we’re excited to announce that Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) support will start rolling out globally to PS5 players this week.”

As explained by Nishino, “On HDMI 2.1 VRR-compatible TVs and PC monitors, VRR dynamically syncs the refresh rate of the display to the PS5 console’s graphical output. This enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating visual artifacts, such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing. Gameplay in many PS5 titles feels smoother as scenes render seamlessly, graphics look crisper, and input lag is reduced.”

Sony then revealed the first batch of games set to be updated with VRR support, including Astro’s Playroom; Call of Duty; Deathloop; Destiny 2; DMC 5 Special Edition; Marvel’s Spider-Man; Rainbow Six Siege and Resident Evil Village – to name a few.

Perhaps even more exciting is the fact that VRR can be applied to all games, regardless of whether the feature is officially supported or not (though users may encounter some bugs).

The PS5 generation has so far been a rather stable one when it comes to game performance. Still, some games – especially those pushing for 60 or 120fps can see frame drops on occasion. As such, it is exciting to see VRR finally come to the PS5.

Sony has been promising to add variable refresh rate support to the PlayStation 5 ever since launch. Now 18 months later, the feature appears to be on the way, with Sony confirming plans to roll it out soon.

Last night, alongside a new PlayStation 5 Software update, Sony announced that Variable Refresh Rate will be available “in the coming months” for HDMI 2.1 compatible TVs and PC monitors. With VRR, games will dynamically sync the refresh rate of the TV with the frame rate of the game, paving the way for better response times, smoother gameplay and the elimination of screen tearing.

VRR has been available on the Xbox Series X/S consoles since launch and most games support the feature. It is particularly useful for titles with 120Hz modes, where the frame rate can vary more often compared to a 60FPS or 30FPS mode. Sony says PS5 games can support VRR through a patch and future titles will be able to include VRR support at launch.

While VRR might not be officially supported by every game, Sony has added a toggle in the VRR options menu to force it to apply to unsupported games too.

KitGuru Says: VRR became the standard for gaming PC monitors years ago and now with this new generation of consoles, VRR is also becoming standard for consoles and TVs. Have you been waiting for VRR support on PS5? Are there any games in particular you want to enable it on?

Nvidia may have conceded defeat in the variable refresh rate battle, as the company has announced it will open up its G-sync capable monitors to support variable refresh rate over HDMI, enabling the use of the technology with AMD graphics cards on G-sync monitors.

Back in January, Nvidia announced that its graphics cards would support VESA VRR (variable refresh rate) technology by adding a host of G-Sync compatible displays which were originally AMD FreeSync compatible only. According to TFT Central, Nvidia has gone one step further by announcing its G-Sync displays will add support for VRR over HDMI, meaning AMD graphics cards users will have the ability to use variable refresh rate on Nvidia G-Sync monitors.

The first hints of this came in September this year when TFT Central spotted that the Acer Predator X27P appeared to be an updated version of the older X27 with added support for VRR over HDMI. Later, the Acer Predator XB273X was suggested to feature HDMI VRR, with adaptive-sync via DisplayPort too.

TFT central reached out to Nvidia to get a better understanding of what was going on with these new displays and Nvidia responded by confirming that future G-sync displays will, in fact, be capable of supporting both HDMI-VRR as well as adaptive-sync for HDMI and DisplayPort. Nvidia says a firmware update is in the process of being made for v1 and v2 G-sync modules that will enable this new feature for use in the future.

This is great news all round as it means not only will AMD graphics card users be able to take advantage of variable refresh rate on Nvidia G-sync capable monitors, it also means the monitors could work with any future games consoles featuring HDMI VRR.

It’s not all good news though, TFT Central also had confirmation from Nvidia that the firmware update to enable this new feature will only be available for new monitors, it will not be possible to apply this firmware update to current G-sync monitors. However, this is positive news and will remove previous restrictions for gamers hoping to use variable refresh rate technology in the future.

KitGuru says: This is great news for gamers especially. Variable refresh rate technology provides much smoother gameplay and significantly reduces screen tearing, to offer an enhanced gaming experience. I personally love gaming on variable high refresh rates and would never go back to fixed 60Hz displays.

Microsoft has been making much more of an effort to get on the good side of PC gamers in recent years. There were some hurdles along the way, with issues surrounding the Universal Windows App system and the Windows 10 Store but things have been changing for the better in the last year. In the latest Windows update, Microsoft is focusing on making the OS better for gamers once again with a new Variable Refresh Rate setting that enables VRR even in titles that lack native support.

Variable refresh rate support has become hugely important for PC gaming in the last few years, in large part thanks to the dominance of G-Sync and FreeSync displays. Enabling variable refresh rate support allows the GPU to control monitor refresh rate and eliminates screen tearing in the process. Not all games support VRR directly but those with the latest update for Windows 10 1903 should see a new graphics settings option to work around this.

This all stems back to when Microsoft first starting rolling out Xbox exclusives on PC as UWP apps. The first batch of games, including Gears of War: Ultimate Edition and Quantum Break, did not support adaptive V-Sync and unlocked frame rates. Some Windows Store games still don't support adaptive sync and variable refresh rates even after Microsoft implemented the tools to do it with UWP.

With this new Windows setting, people will be able to force VRR support in games that don't explicitly support it. Mileage will vary from game to game but this feature should enable a smoother experience. The update isn't appearing for everyone just yet but it is rolling out and should pop up on your system soon if it hasn't already.

KitGuru Says: Now that future Xbox exclusives are also going to launch on Steam, this seems like less of a big deal. However, if you are a PC and Xbox owner and want to take advantage of ‘Play Anywhere', then you may still end up playing UWP versions of games from the Windows Store in the future and in that case, this feature should continue to be helpful.
