Just as promised, today Fallout 76 launched on Steam, complete with the new Wastelanders update. The latest expansion has only been live for a few hours, but so far, reception is a bit all over the place.

The Steam page currently has a ‘mostly negative' rating based on 70 reviews at the time of writing. The most helpful review currently warns that players should switch from borderless fullscreen to regular fullscreen mode to avoid a big performance hit. Other reviews also note problems launching the game and an error with redeeming the game on Steam for those who linked their Bethesda.net and Steam accounts before April 12th.

Aside from that, there are some more positive reviews, with some long-term players chiming in to praise the new NPCs that have arrived in Appalachia. Unfortunately, the update hasn't been out long enough to really know if the new main story makes the game worth revisiting, but during my short time with the game this afternoon, I can say that the game has more of a single-player Fallout feel to it thanks to dialogue trees, skill checks and other returning RPG elements.

Hopefully later this week, we'll have a better set of first impressions for the new content. Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Have any of you tried Fallout 76's latest update this afternoon? Or are you waiting to hear opinions from players who have spent more time with it?

The Fallout 76 Wastelanders update is coming up in just a few days and while this is mostly good news, there is a little bit of bad news for players who have already settled down with a camp. Due to the new settlements and NPCs coming to the map, some camping spots will now be off limits, meaning you'll need to pick up your stuff and move to a new location.

A lot of the fun in Fallout 76 comes from setting up your own camp sites. However, with new characters moving in, less of the map is available for players to claim. Bethesda has given players a few days warning so they can pick up and move:

In the map above you can see the new no-build zones in Appalachia, so players can double check if their camp site is safe. If not, you have a few days to move it and set up elsewhere, otherwise, your camp will just be gone once the update goes live.

KitGuru Says: Wastelanders has the potential to be Fallout 76's No Man's Sky moment. Hopefully we can see the game turn around and go in a more promising direction. Did any of you play Fallout 76 when it first came out? Are you thinking about giving it another chance once Wastelanders drops?

We are just a few days away from Fallout 76’s big return with the Wastelanders expansion and Steam launch. In preparation for the update, Bethesda released a new trailer for Wastelanders today, teasing new NPCs, factions and story quests.

The trailer is short, so we don't get much in the form of spoilers for new main story missions. However, we do get a look at some long awaited changes to Appalachia. You can see the full trailer below:

Wastelanders brings new life to the region, with human characters returning, cultists and bandits setting up camps and new settlements forming. There will also be companion characters with romance options, so there are many more single-player Fallout elements making their way into Fallout 76.

The update arrives on Tuesday April 14th. Anyone who already owns the PC version on Bethesda.net will be able to redeem the Steam version for free, which you can learn about, HERE.

KitGuru Says: I've been looking forward to this update for a long time now and while I doubt it will suddenly transform Fallout 76 into the best game in the series, I am optimistic about the new improvements coming. Are any of you planning on trying out Fallout 76 again once Wastelanders releases next week?

We are just two weeks away from Fallout 76's long awaited ‘Wastelanders' expansion, which means the game is also going to be heading to Steam this month after a lengthy period as an exclusive for the Bethesda PC launcher. In an effort to win some old players back, owners of Fallout 76 on Bethesda.net will also be able to claim the game on Steam for free.

Writing in a blog post today, Bethesda said: “Ever since we shared details about Fallout 76’s Steam launch earlier this year, we have received feedback from PC players in the community who would like to be able to explore Appalachia on both Steam and Bethesda.net. We want you to be able to play on your PC platform of choice. So, we’re happy to announce that if you already own the PC version of Fallout 76 on Bethesda.net, then you will also be able to claim a free copy of the game on Steam for a limited time.”

In order to claim Fallout 76 on Steam, you will need to link your Bethesda.net and Steam accounts between now and 11:59PM ET on the 12th of April. The game will have its official launch on Steam on the 14th of April, the same day the Wastelanders update drops.

If you buy or claim a Steam copy of Fallout 76 before April 28th, you will also receive Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics for free. The Fallout Classic Collection will also be given as a freebie to those who already own the game on Bethesda.net.

Finally, if you want to level/gear up in preparation for Wastelanders, Fallout 76 owners will get Triple XP for playing this coming weekend.

KitGuru Says: I'm looking forward to Wastelanders, as on paper, it should turn Fallout 76 into the the multiplayer version of Fallout that many people wanted from the beginning. Are any of you going to be picking this up or checking out the new update this month?

The Fallout 76 Wastelanders update is going to be a huge overhaul, adding in real NPCs, new story quests and generally breathing new life into the West Virginia wasteland. The update was already pushed back from late 2019 to April 7th 2020 and unfortunately, due to the coronavirus situation, another delay has come in. However, it is not a long one.

In an update message posted to Twitter today, Bethesda revealed that due to the coronavirus pandemic, changes have been made to the way the studio operates. This in turn has affected the studio's ability to conduct final testing on the new content, meaning the update will now be coming a week later, on April 14th.

For those who are out of the loop on the Wastelanders update, Bethesda showed off quite a bit of it in a gameplay showcase last month. Now, upon leaving Vault 76 for the first time, players will encounter human NPCs who you can talk to. Areas that were once barren will now have characters walking around, rather than endless ghouls, mutants and robots. Dialogue options are also based on your player stats, so there will be negative speech skill checks and special dialogue options based on your character build.

When playing key quests, there will be solo instances where your character will make story choices without random players coming along. Aside from that, the addition of real NPCs means some more civilised locations need to be added to the world, so there will be two new settlements added to the map, both of which will feature in the two main quest lines at the centre of the Wastelanders update.

Aside from all of that, you can expect new weapons, power armour, side quests and more to explore. Currently, the Fallout 76 Wastelanders expansion is due to release on April 14th.

KitGuru Says: Obviously, Fallout 76 had more than its share of issues at launch and clearly missed the mark for many long-term Fallout fans. However, I am optimistic about the Wastelanders update and look forward to trying it. This latest delay is perfectly understandable given the situation, but hopefully this time next month, we'll instead be discussing positive news around the new content.

Bethesda is gearing up to launch the Wastelanders expansion for Fallout 76, adding proper NPCs, conversations, new story quests and more to the game. This potentially game-saving update has been delayed a couple of times but now, an April release date is in place and a good chunk of gameplay has been shown off.

Bethesda held a ‘Game Days' stream this weekend, showing off new gameplay and updates for various games, including DOOM Eternal, The Elder Scrolls Online and of course, Fallout 76. In the Wastelanders preview, we see a lot of changes to the game, as well as new locations, NPCs, dialogue options and one of the new quests.

Fallout 76's new expansion will be available on the 7th of April, free of charge, to all existing game owners. Additionally, the game will become available on Steam at the same date, and any Steam user that buys the game will also get access to the new DLC.

The new update will introduce “fully voiced NPCs” and a “brand-new main questline”. The game will also be updated with new locations, weapons, and enemies, a new reputation system, and more. There's also a new trailer to accompany the announcement of Wastelanders.

Although current owners of Fallout 76 will receive the DLC for free, there will be two bundles available for purchase, the Raider content bundle and the Settler content bundle. Both bundles come with exclusive cosmetic and C.A.M.P. items for each of the factions they represent. These bundles can be bought separately or together in one combination bundle.

There will be two new editions of the Fallout 76 game: Fallout 76: Wastelanders, which includes the game and the expansion, and then Fallout 76: Wastelanders Deluxe, which includes the standard edition plus both bundles, the Raider content and the Settler content.

The Tricentennial Edition of Fallout 76 will be discontinued with the launch of Wastelanders, but the items in the Tricentennial Pack will still be available.

With the Steam's release of Fallout 76, Steam users will be able to buy the game, Atoms, a Fallout 1st membership, the Tricentennial Pack, and the Raider and Settler content bundles.

If a user already owns the game on Bethesda.net, the Atoms and the Fallout 1st membership balance won't be shared between both platforms. Atoms are platform-bound, but the items bought with the currency “will be shared across both platforms”.

The anniversary of Fallout 76 was initially due to be much more exciting, as the ‘Wastelanders' NPC and companions update was originally due to arrive. Unfortunately, that update was pushed back a bit but now, it appears to be ready for testing, ahead of a release in the coming weeks.

The Fallout 76 Wastelanders update is perhaps the most important update to the game so far, as it could get fans of Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 back on board. The update will add NPCs to the world and companions, in addition to a new story quest, dialogue options and more. It is a big undertaking, which is why it was delayed from 2019 to ‘early 2020' and now, Bethesda is going live with a Private Test Server to give players a chance to test the update.

A few hundred successful applicants will be accepted to join Bethesda's PTS for Fallout 76, although they will need to agree to an NDA- so we won't be seeing live-streams or first impressions for just yet. Anyone that breaks the NDA will almost definitely face legal action.

The first round of sign-ups closed earlier this week and those who applied should be getting their invites in the days leading up to January 17th, when the Wastelanders PTS goes live on PC. Testing could be expanded further, so keep an eye out for more updates in case sign-ups open again. If it all goes well, then testing might wrap up sooner and lead to a quicker release date announcement.

KitGuru Says: Fallout 76 has kind of had its reputation tarnished all over again thanks to the Fallout 1st subscription, but I do still have high hopes for the Wastelanders update. If Bethesda can deliver something more akin to co-op Fallout 4 with real characters, then I think a lot of people might give the game another chance. Did any of you buy Fallout 76 at launch? Will you be checking out Wastelanders or have you left the game behind for good?
