Films based on popular video game IPs have become the new hotness in Hollywood, with the likes of Sonic, Mario and Uncharted all having been adapted for the silver screen in recent years – with many more in development. Adding on to the list of adaptations is Ubisoft, with a Watch Dogs film officially announced to be on its way.

In an exclusive report by Deadline, the publication revealed that Ubisoft and entertainment company New Regency have partnered up to produce a film based on the publisher’s semi-popular Watch Dogs franchise.

Set to be directed by Mathieu Turi and starring Sophie Wilde, no plot details have been shared – though expect it at the very least to heavily incorporate various aspects from the series’ 3 entries (aka. hacking, corruption and near futurism).

With each of the three Watch Dogs games being set in different locations and starring different characters/factions, it will be interesting to see what direction the film winds up taking.

Regardless, the concepts surrounding the Watch Dogs series could certainly work well in a movie-like medium and so we will have to wait and see how it turns out.

Ubisoft has historically been one of the first publishers to adopt any new technology, whether it be cloud gaming, NFTs or what-have-you. With AI being the new hotness, the publisher has officially announced that they will be using an AI ghostwriter to help with the scripting of future games, stating that it will “support our scriptwriters.”

Making the announcement, the publisher released a YouTube video titled ‘Ubisoft is Developing an AI Ghostwriter to Save Scriptwriters Time’ where they detailed this new tool which will be used primarily to assist in the writing of NPC chatter.

The description of the video offered more on this new endeavour, saying: “Introducing Ubisoft Ghostwriter, an AI tool developed in-house that aims to support our scriptwriters by generating the first draft of our NPC barks – the phrases or sounds made by NPCs when players interact with the game world.”

They continue, “This tool was created hand-in-hand with scriptwriters to create more realistic NPC interactions by generating variations on a piece of dialogue See how our teams will use AI to handle repetitive tasks, and free up time to work on other core game elements.”

The use of AI to replace human workers is certainly a slippery slope and while it is supposedly being used only for relatively menial dialogue and as a first draft, the announcement of this new tool has been met with great scepticism from most.

AI technology is not as robust as many would have you believe, and so the introduction of the process into game development is concerning, and could ultimately lead to NPCs and worlds which feel even less human. We will have to wait and see what becomes of Ubisoft’s AI Ghostwriter.

We recently learned that Ubisoft cancelled a number of unannounced projects, a few of which were different takes on the Battle Royale formula. According to a recent leak, one of these cancelled projects was a new Watch Dogs game.

A rumour spreading around the web this week claims that Ubisoft was working on a Watch Dogs battle royale game, but the twist here is that it was stealth focused. As a Watch Dogs game, players would try to blend in with NPCs in the environment to avoid being caught out by other players.

While attempting to cloak yourself as an NPC to avoid detection, you would also have to gather loot dotted around a Watch Dogs version of Tokyo. Once geared up, you are ready to go on the offensive and hunt down the other players hiding throughout the map. When you get into a firefight, you'll have access to a number of weapons, from the classic DedSec stun gun to more deadly weapons.

The team apparently working on this project have since been moved over to XDefiant, a new live service shooter that Ubisoft has high hopes for.

KitGuru Says: This game was never announced and we don't really have proof that it ever existed. While this sounded like a potentially interesting spin on a Battle Royale game, it seems unlikely that it would have taken off, as the Battle Royale space is essentially dominated by a handful of established titles at this point, leaving little room for newcomers to break through into the mainstream.

After years away from the platform, Ubisoft has finally returned to Steam. That being said, the publisher is choosing to bring its titles over one at a time. Following the addition of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and Roller Champions (among others), it seems Watch Dogs Legion will be the next game to arrive.

Both Watch Dogs 1 and 2 are available on Steam and have been since launch. In the years following these titles however, Ubisoft moved away from Steam, instead partnering with Epic Games to bring future titles exclusively to the Epic Games Store (and Ubisoft’s own Connect Launcher).

Finally, it seems as though 2020’s Watch Dogs Legion will be next in line to break free of these platforms, as ResetEra user ‘Chairmanchuck’ noted that the publisher is set to host a Watch Dogs franchise sale.

The sale will go live later today, and will conclude on the 19th of December. Currently, only Watch Dogs 1 and 2 are available, but considering the fact that Ubisoft has begun to bring its older titles to Steam, this would be an opportune time to add Legion.

Of course, we will have to wait for an official announcement, but if you are a Steam user and are planning on getting Watch Dogs Legion, it may be best to hold off for now. The Watch Dogs franchise sale can be found HERE.

The Watch Dogs franchise is one of Ubisoft’s most frustraiting, not due to its quality, but simply due to the fact that it’s a series with a great deal of potential being hampered by typical Ubisoft gimmicks. It is therefore interesting to see that a manga based in the world of Watch Dogs is now available.

As reported by MangaMoguraRE, a new manga is being released called Watch Dogs Tokyo. Drawn by artist Kamo Syuhei (Gangsta: Cursed) & written by Shirato Seiichi, the manga is releasing its first chapter later today.

Currently, no official English version has been announced, however fan translations are commonplace in the manga community, and so it won’t be too long before Watch Dogs Tokyo is readable in multiple different languages.

According to MangaMoguraRE, Watch Dogs Tokyo will be about “a special new infrastructure system from a company called Bloom Japan used by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government to change people's lives. However this new system does in fact also harbor a great darkness.”

This isn’t the first time a manga has been released based on a Ubisoft IP. Unfortunately, all previous releases were limited in their length. With no new Watch Dogs game announced, it will be interesting to see if this story ties into an upcoming sequel, or if the team is simply experimenting with taking advantage of different mediums.

Like most of Ubisoft’s open-world games nowadays, Watch Dogs Legion launched with an extensive post-launch roadmap in place, including free and paid DLCs rolling out over late 2020 and 2021. Now as we head into 2022, the Watch Dogs Legion team is moving on to new projects.

In a blog post this week, Ubisoft confirmed that development on Watch Dogs Legion has now come to an end and the game will get no more content updates. Currently, the game’s online services are re-running previous seasonal events for players but eventually, online services for the game will go offline.

“TU 5.6 was our final update for Watch Dogs: Legion”, Ubisoft confirmed. “However, you can look forward to reward tracks in the Online Mode, containing both new and returning rewards. The current season 4 Rebels track, containing 80 ranks, will run until January 22, 2022, followed by Season 5 Stripes. After that, Seasons 3-5 will continue to cycle and return to the game, giving you the opportunity to acquire rewards you might have missed out on in the past.”

We don’t know what the Watch Dogs team will work on next. Perhaps in a few years time there will be a Watch Dogs 4. If that were to happen, I would like to see a return to having a central main character for the main story, with less of a focus on random NPC recruiting.

With the new PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S developers have typically been offering players much greater choice when it comes to tailoring the gameplay experience to their liking. One of these ways is through offering both performance and resolution options in games. While titles such as Spider-Man Miles Morales, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla and more offered the option, Watch Dogs: Legion did not – until now.

At launch, Watch Dogs: Legion only offered one graphics mode for next-gen consoles, that being 30fps with ray-tracing on. While visually impressive, some players did not think the tradeoff between ray-tracing and framerate was worth it.

As such, the Watch Dogs team confirmed that a 60fps mode would be added at a later date. Though it took more than 6 months, the 60fps update is now live as part of the game's big 4.5 patch (which adds new content, crossplay and more). It is worth noting however that framerate and ray-tracing are not the only changes made between the two modes. The 60fps mode reportedly also reduces the visual settings from high to medium, as well as turning off ray-tracing.

While for some this visual downgrade may be too much, for others, maintaining 60fps is a must. As such, it is good to see players being given the choice between the two – even if it took a while to arrive.

For a few months now, Watch Dogs Legion has been following a content roadmap for major updates throughout the year. Some of this planned content is now being juggled around, with some updates pushed back to a later date. We also have an official date for Watch Dogs Legion's 60 frames per second mode on Xbox Series X and PS5 consoles.

Since launching late last year, Watch Dogs Legion has offered just one graphics mode on Xbox Series X/S and PS5, enabling 30FPS gameplay with ray-traced reflections. On the 1st of June, a performance mode will be added to the game, enabling 60FPS gameplay on both new consoles.

Unfortunately, we still don't know much about the technical changes made to reach 60 frames per second, so there's still more to hear on resolution, graphical settings etc. Chances are, this mode will disable ray-traced reflections.

As for other upcoming content, Watch Dogs Legion will be getting its 5.0 major update in July, which will add previous Watch Dogs characters, Aiden Pearce and Wrench to the game. Online modes like Invasion and Extraction have unfortunately been delayed a bit though, moving into an August release window.

When Watch Dogs: Legion was first released, many fans were left disappointed by the fact that the PS5 and Series X|S versions of the game lacked any 60fps option. It seems Ubisoft are aware of this fact, as they have now confirmed that a 60fps mode is being worked on for these new consoles.

In a recent Reddit AMA, the Watch Dogs: Legion developers were asked “Is there any update on a performance mode which targets 60fps on next generation consoles? It would [be] amazing if we got confirmation if it was in development.”

In response, they confirmed that “60fps for next gen consoles is in development and we'll announce the exact release dates with our future TUs [updates].”

This is great news for all those with a PS5 and Series X|S. One of the most disappointing aspects to Watch Dogs: Legion for many was the fact that the next-gen versions lacked any 60fps mode, only offering a ray-tracing option at 30fps. This was doubly disappointing when considering the fact that another open world Ubisoft title, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, offered a 60fps mode as standard on next-gen.

Though it may not have been at launch, it is encouraging to see that Watch Dogs: Legion will in fact be getting a 60fps mode at some point in the future.

Watch Dogs: Legion launched at the end of October 2020 to mixed reviews from both critics and fans alike. Despite this, Ubisoft is hoping to draw players back in with a promised online mode. Though not available at launch, the online mode for Watch Dogs: Legion has now been announced to be coming on the 9th of March.

Making the announcement, Ubisoft revealed that “Watch Dogs: Legion launches its free Online mode on March 9, giving players the chance to race their friends through the streets of London, take on a variety of intense new cooperative mission types and challenges, or team a dancer up with a beatboxer by the Tower Bridge for an impromptu riverside performance.”

Like GTA: Online, Watch Dogs Legion: Online is a standalone experience which allows you to team up with friends and complete daily and weekly challenges, and will also offer a Battle Pass and cosmetic items.

Players will also be able to experience newly crafted co-op missions, which will let up to 4 players partake in infiltrating bases and taking out targets. These missions will increase your faction rank.

The game will also include raid-like ‘tactical ops’ missions, which are 3-4 player endgame missions which “require intense communication and teamwork”. In these missions, if a single player dies, the whole team must start from the beginning. Needless to say, Watch Dogs: Legion will be expecting players to grind in order to manage these missions.

Standalone online modes of games can be extremely lucrative in the long run, and it looks like Watch Dogs: Legion is hoping to tap into that market. It will be interesting to see whether the game mode can keep players interesting in the long run.

Watch Dogs Legion has been out for a while now but the game still has a number of lingering issues. With that in mind, Ubisoft has decided it would be best to delay the game's upcoming multiplayer mode, pushing its release into 2021, while the developers continue to patch the single-player experience.

“Since the launch of Watch Dogs: Legion, some of you continue to have technical issues preventing you from enjoying the game”, Ubisoft writes in an update. “The dev team is committed to fixing these issues and will not stop until everyone can experience the game as intended.”

The first step is patch 2.20, which is coming to PC, consoles and Stadia this week. This will add a manual ‘Save' option to PC to combat instances of lost progress. This patch will also include additional “stability improvements”.

On the PC side, one of the biggest issues at the moment is the low frame rate on high-end GPUs. Getting a consistent 60 frames per second proves difficult on almost any currently available GPU. That is something that Ubisoft hopes to address next month in a new patch with “stability improvements and further graphics optimisations for PC”.

All of this will now take priority over the game's upcoming multiplayer update, which is now scheduled to arrive in “early 2021”.

The various video games rating boards across the world often give insight into as-of-yet-unannounced games. The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has now revealed that a Watch Dogs Complete Edition is supposedly on the way, though exact details on what this will be is still somewhat unknown.

As published by the ESRB, Watch Dogs Complete Edition pertains to the first game in the franchise, which is described as “an action game in which players assume the role of a vigilante hacker (Aiden Pearce) trying to find an evil mastermind that killed his family.”

While some may assume that this is a remaster of the first game, as it will be coming to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X, the game will also interestingly be launching on the current generation of consoles (PS4 and Xbox One), as well as PC and Google Stadia.

Though there is no doubt that improvements can be made to the original Watch Dogs (look at the graphical improvements between Watch Dogs and Watch Dogs: Legion on current gen for example), it is still interesting nonetheless to see a potential remaster arriving on the same system which it originally launched on.

Of course, it is possible that Watch Dogs Complete Edition is something else entirely (it may simply be the original game with its Season Pass content included). We’ll have to wait and see what Ubisoft has to say when Watch Dogs Complete Edition is announced in the future.

One of the major advancements in technology set to arrive with the next generation consoles will be their ability to utilise ray tracing. While the technology is undoubtedly taxing on hardware, according to Ubisoft, the implementation of ray tracing on both the PS5 and Series X will be so similar to its PC counterpart that “only experts will be able to spot differences.”

In an interview with Galvin Whitlock, the Lead Programmer at Ubisoft talked to WCCFTECH about the next-gen versions of Watch Dogs: Legion (which recently released on PC and current gen systems). One of the main upgrades coming to the next-gen versions of Legion is the ability to turn on ray tracing, which according to Whitlock, will be comparable to the current PC implementation.

Talking to WCCFTECH, Whitlock said “The fundamentals of the ray-tracing are the same across all platforms that support it. For RTX on PC, we do ray-tracing for rougher surfaces in more situations. Ray-tracing relies on a simplified version of the world that we trace rays into.”

He continued, “This has been optimised individually for each platform to maximise the number of rays we can process. Overall, the look is similar on all platforms supporting ray-tracing, but side-by-side, only experts will be able to spot differences.”

With ray tracing being a relatively new technology in gaming, and considering the fact that both the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X are relatively budget friendly when compared to PCs, it is surprising to see the feature being so robust – though of course we’ll have to wait and see how it turns out when the next-gen versions actually launch.

KitGuru says: What do you think of ray tracing? Can your PC handle it currently? How much resolution would you be willing to sacrifice for a ray traced image? Let us know down below.

Last month, a hacking group claimed to have compromised Ubisoft's systems and got their hands on confidential files and documents. We haven't heard much since then, but now, it looks like the group has released Watch Dogs Legion's source code on the internet.

According to some sources, there is a 560GB bundle of files currently floating around filesharing sites containing the source code for Watch Dogs Legion. Proof was offered in the form of screenshots of the archive's file structure.

Speaking with Eurogamer, an Ubisoft spokesperson has confirmed that the publisher is aware of the leak. The company is now “investigating a potential data security incident”, something that probably should have happened several weeks ago when claims of a hack first popped up.

With complete access to the source code, it is highly likely that piracy groups will be able to release cracked version of the game. Beyond that, if modders get their hands on it, they will be able to tinker with pretty much all aspects of the game.

KitGuru Says: We'll have to wait and see what Ubisoft's investigation brings but for now, it appears that the publisher was compromised in some form.

Watch Dogs: Legion is officially releasing tomorrow but unfortunately for those looking to play it on Xbox One X, there is a serious game-breaking bug to be aware of.

During the mission ‘404', which takes place a few hours into the main campaign, Watch Dogs: Legion freezes when running on Xbox One X and as reported by Eurogamer, this then leads to a message from the Xbox warning of an imminent shutdown. The bug apparently causes the console to overheat.

The odd thing here is that Xbox One X is the platform Ubisoft recommended that reviewers play the game on. So there could be other bugs on other platforms that still need addressing.

Ubisoft is already aware of the Xbox One X issue and is working on a fix, which should come in a patch on Friday. Hopefully there aren't any other game-breaking issues further down the line.

KitGuru Says: It is unfortunate that this particular bug is still present the day of the game's launch. This is something that really should have been caught earlier. If you are picking this game up today and plan to play on Xbox One X, then you'll be best off avoiding this particular mission until later in the week when a fix rolls out.

Back in 2014, Ubisoft became somewhat infamous for its defence of 30 frames per second gameplay limits on consoles. As we head towards the next generation of consoles though, the publisher is finally breaking beyond the 30fps barrier for several key titles.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Far Cry 6 and Immortals Fenyx Rising will all run at up to 60 frames per second on the Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 consoles. Meanwhile, Watch Dogs Legion will be running at 4K/30fps but it will include ray-tracing. There is the possibility that a higher frame rate mode gets added to Watch Dogs post-launch but nothing has been confirmed yet.

Aside from that, some of Ubisoft's on-going titles, like Rainbow Six Siege and For Honor, will also be getting frame rate upgrades on next gen. In the case of For Honor, players can expect 4K/60fps on Xbox Series X/S and PS5, while Rainbow Six Siege will be capable of running at up to 120 frames per second.

While all of these games are cross-gen titles, Ubisoft provides a free upgrade to the next-gen version if you decide to upgrade your console later.

KitGuru Says: It is great to see Ubisoft finally aiming higher with promises of 60 frames per second and high-end graphics. Hopefully 60 frames per second will end up being the standard for games on next-gen hardware moving forward.

As we approach the start of the next generation of consoles, many publishers are beginning to highlight the upgrades coming to its cross-generational titles when played on a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X. In a recent AMA on Reddit, the Live Producer for Watch Dogs Legion revealed exactly what fans can expect if they decide to hold on to playing the game until the release of the PS5 and Series X.

Lathieeshe Thillainathan, the Live Producer for Watch Dogs Legion took to Reddit to partake in an AMA (ask me anything) session. Alongside the announcement that the game will include cross progression across all platforms (with cross-play coming at a later date), Thillainathan revealed that the open-world stealth hacker game will run with “Ray tracing, 4k, 30fps on PS5 and Xbox Series X.”

While 4K with ray tracing is certainly impressive, it’ll be interesting to see whether the resolution is native, or upscaled in some way. Furthermore, ray tracing can take many different forms. How comprehensive the ray tracing is in Watch Dogs Legion is also currently unknown.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, another open-world Ubisoft title, has been announced to run at 4K60fps on next-gen systems without ray tracing. Hopefully Watch Dogs Legion will offer multiple rendering options, allowing players to choose between features such as ray tracing and framerate. We’ll have to wait and see.

Watch Dogs Legion launches on current gen systems on the 29th of October, with the game’s next-gen versions arriving with the respective consoles.

Today, Apex Legends officially implements NVIDIA Reflex, the new technology to reduce system latency/input lag in competitive games. So far, this has been implemented in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Valorant and a couple of other select titles.

Apex Legends is the latest to join that growing list, implementing NVIDIA Reflex to improve input responsiveness. This is done through a new API that enables the game to complete ‘just-in-time' rendering, eliminating GPU rendering queues and reducing CPU load on GPU intensive scenes. Of course, those using a high refresh rate monitor will see the most benefit.

Aside from Apex Legends gaining NVIDIA Reflex today, the GeForce specialists also have one other piece of news- Watch Dogs Legion's updated PC system requirements.

When Ubisoft initially announced its PC system requirements for this game, it had to use last-gen GPUs for ray-tracing specs as the RTX 30 series had not launched yet. That has now changed, so as you would expect, the RTX 3080 is recommended for 4K/Ultra ray-tracing, the RTX 3070 is recommended for 1440p/very-high ray-tracing and the RTX 2060 (which has no 30-series replacement yet) is recommended for 1080p/high ray-tracing. You can see our full breakdown of Watch Dogs Legion's system requirements HERE.

KitGuru Says: A couple of interesting updates from Nvidia today. Have any of you tried NVIDIA Reflex in a supported game recently? Will you be switching it on in Apex Legends?

Watch Dogs: Legion is just a few weeks away. With that in mind, Ubisoft has begun teasing what's to come beyond launch, including a mix of free single-player content and paid expansions, mirroring what the publisher has done with Assassin's Creed in recent years.

In a new post-launch and season pass content trailer, Ubisoft has detailed what to expect from Watch Dogs: Legion after release and once players have gotten through the main campaign.

In terms of free content, players can expect four-player free-roam co-op, new co-op missions, larger and tougher ‘Tactical Ops' missions meant for four-player squads and a dedicated PvP mode called Spiderbot Arena. Single-player fans can expect more in 2021, including new characters, abilities, missions and New Game+.

The Season Pass expands on all of this with a full expansion called Bloodline. This expansion continues the story of Aiden Pierce, the protagonist of Watch Dogs 1. Wrench from Watch Dogs 2 will also be making an appearance in this new story content. Season Pass owners also get access to four ‘Hero' characters to play with through the main game – Aiden, Wrench, Mina and Darcy. Darcy is particularly interesting, as she is the next piece to the Watch Dogs/Assassin's Creed crossover puzzle. Finally, the season pass also includes three extra DedSec story missions.

Watch Dogs: Legion is releasing on the 29th of October.

KitGuru Says: I'm looking forward to giving this a go, although I'm not too fussed about an expansion focusing on Aiden Pierce. With that said, Watch Dogs has improved a ton since the first game, so it could be a good redemption for the character. Are many of you planning on picking up Watch Dogs: Legion later this month?

In preparation for Ubisoft Forward last weekend, the publisher announced that it would give away copies to all who tuned into the stream and linked their uPlay account. Unfortunately, Ubi's PC launcher couldn't quite handle the demand, so Ubisoft is making up for it with a more expansive giveaway.

As an apology to those who encountered errors when trying to link their account to get Watch Dogs 2 during the event, Ubisoft will now be giving the game away to anyone who has a uPlay account.

Ubisoft was also giving away other smaller in-game rewards for various titles in its library throughout the event. All of these will also be given away to uPlay account holders.

This isn't an automatic process though, you will need to head over to the registration page, HERE. From there, you can log in with your uPlay account and Ubisoft will credit your account with all of the rewards.

KitGuru Says: It is a shame that uPlay encountered issues during this process but perhaps it will spur the publisher along with bringing some better upgrades to the infrastructure. It isn't the worst launcher, but it could also be a lot better.

Each month, PlayStation adds a number of new titles to its PlayStation Now game subscription service. The console manufacturer has now announced which games are joining the service for the month of July – including Street Fighter V and Watch Dogs 2.

PlayStation Now subscribers can get their hands on 5 new games which have joined the service in July:

  • Watch Dogs 2
  • Street Fighter V
  • Hello Neighbor
  • Infinite Mini Golf
  • The Turing Test

Watch Dogs 2 is the headlining title for the month. Available from now until the 5th of October 2020, Watch Dogs 2 has you play as “Marcus Holloway, a brilliant young hacker and the latest recruit to the San Francisco arm of DedSec”. Armed with a plethora of tools and hacking equipment, you can “break into any electronic device, computer system or vehicle, collect information on every citizen, and infiltrate the infrastructure of an entire city as you fight alongside the hacker community against an immoral establishment.”

Street Fighter V is the latest entry in the long-running fighting game franchise. Originally released in 2016 to mixed reviews, the game has continually been supported and updated with new characters, gameplay enhancements, and even new story elements. Now, more than ever, Street Fighter V offers the complete fighting game experience.

Joining the service as part of Sony’s new “PlayStation Indies” initiative, Hello Neighbor is a stealth-horror game where the prime goal is to “sneak into your neighbor’s house to figure out what secrets he’s hiding in the basement”. Thanks to “an advanced AI that learns from your every move,” no two playthroughs are ever truly the same, meaning you must adapt and evolve your approach – just as your neighbour does.

Though not officially announced, two other games are also joining PS Now in July. Infinite Mini Golf, where you can play and create “an unlimited amount of minigolf courses,” as well as The Turing Test, a first-person puzzler set on Jupiter’s moon, Europa are now available on the service.

All these titles are joining the 800+ other games on the service. The full list of PlayStation Now games can be found HERE.

Though Ubisoft had a rather quiet 2019, due in part to a number of delays as well as some underwhelming releases, it's looking as though the publisher is ready to compensate for this over the next 12 months, as they have now announced that over the next fiscal year Ubisoft intends to release 5 AAA games from some of its biggest franchises, as well as new IP.

Announced during its fiscal earnings report, and shared by Gamesindustry.biz, “Ubisoft is currently planning to release five AAA titles: Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, Watch Dogs: Legion, Gods & Monsters, Rainbow Six Quarantine, and one more unannounced franchise.”

Watch Dogs: Legion is the 3rd game in the stealth-action franchise. The game was originally set to release on the 6th of March 2020, before being delayed to Ubisoft’s 2021 Fiscal year. Gods and Monsters is a new IP from the creators of Assassin’s Creed Origins. Announced back at E3 2019, the game was intended to release in February 2020, before also being delayed. Rainbow Six: Quarantine was likewise delayed out of early 2020.

Of the 5 games, three of them are now set to be coming in Q3 2020, with the final two arriving in Q4. Though it is currently unknown what the 5th game is, it’s likely that Ubisoft will reveal the title at Ubisoft Forward, its digital showcase which the publisher announced is set for mid-July.

Despite COVID-19 which has had a domino effect on the entire industry, Ubisoft appears to be confident that it’ll be able to deliver a much stronger 2020 than it did with 2019. Time will tell.

Back when the ESA confirmed that no E3 would be taking place this year neither physically nor digitally, Ubisoft was one of the first publishers to announce that it would be aiming to create a replacement event where it could host its summer announcements. The company has now officially announced ‘Ubisoft Forward,’ a digital showcase set to take place on the 12th of July.

Taking to Twitter to make the announcement, Ubisoft stated: “Save the Date. Join us July 12 for Ubisoft Forward, a fully digital showcase with exclusive game news, reveals and more! Stay tuned…#UbiForward.”

No further details were provided regarding what fans might see at this event, although it is likely that Ubisoft will provide a deeper dive into Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. Other previously announced Ubisoft titles which could make an appearance include Gods & Monsters, Watch Dogs: Legion, Skull & Bones, and Beyond Good and Evil 2.

One other potential announcement could see the much-rumoured return of Prince of Persia. Of course, we won’t truly know what Ubisoft has in store for the next 12 months until the publisher itself announces it.

E3 traditionally takes place in early June, and so it is curious to see Ubisoft’s event being pushed to July. Of course, it is likely that complications regarding COVID-19 and the conversion to a digital event are to blame for this uncharacteristically late Summer showcase. Either way, it’ll be interesting to see what the publisher has planned, when Ubisoft Forward goes live on the 12th of July 2020 at 8pm BST.

Epic Games is continuing to offer users of its store free games on a weekly basis. This week in particular appears to be a strong line-up, offering two high quality titles. The Stanley Parable, an award-winning first-person meta exploration title and Watch Dogs, Ubisoft’s open world action-adventure hacking title are both available to purchase for free until the 26th of March at 3pm.

The Stanley Parable is a first-person exploration title where you play as Stanley…or do you? The game, which originated as a Half-Life 2 mod, focuses heavily on its humour and meta narrative structure. With multiple endings and a litany of choices, the game is ripe for replaying to discover not only the story itself, but simply to enjoy the humour of the title. The Stanley Parable received the Special Recognition award at IndieCade in 2012. If you haven’t experienced The Stanley Parable yet, there is no better time to do so.

The second free game on offer is Watch Dogs. Released in 2014, Watch Dogs was the first title in Ubisoft’s burgeoning franchise. You play as Aiden Pearce, a brilliant hacker who can turn Chicago into the ultimate weapon in his quest for revenge. Set in an open world, players can hack any number of things, from phones to cars to even the electric grid. The city of Chicago is in the palm of your hand as you seek to exact revenge. Despite controversies surrounding the game’s graphics being downgraded, Watch Dogs received favourable reviews from critics, and has since spawned an entire franchise. If you’re bored of using guns to solve problems, Watch Dogs is worth giving a go.

Both The Stanley Parable and Watch Dogs will be available to download for free until the 26th of March at 3pm, at which point they will be replaced by ‘Figment’ and ‘Tormentor x Punisher’.

KitGuru says: What do you think of this week’s offerings? Will you be picking either of these games up? In your opinion, was the controversy surrounding Watch Dogs justified, or was it simply overblown? Let us know down below.

Ever since the poor launch of Assassin’s Creed Unity, Ubisoft has been turning a new leaf by giving developers more time and remaining open to game delays. Today, Ubisoft held its quarterly earnings report, going over how The Division 2 and Ghost Recon Breakpoint under-performed and reassessing the release dates for a few of its announced 2020 games.

This year, Ubisoft had forecast higher year-on-year earnings compared to the 2018 to 2019 fiscal year. That estimate has now been lowered by roughly 25 percent to match earnings in 2016-2017. This change comes down to the fact that The Division 2 and Ghost Recon Breakpoint fell below sales expectations by quite some margin. Ubisoft has been looking into the cause for this, coming up with three main factors:

“First, it is harder to generate interest for a sequel to a Live multiplayer game, when prior iterations have benefited from years of optimisation. Consequently, we need to make sure there is more time between each iteration of Live games.”

“Second, our strategy of introducing gameplay innovations in our games has had a very positive impact on our brands. However, to win over players, these innovations need to be perfectly implemented in order to offer an optimal experience. This has not yet been sufficiently the case with Ghost Recon Breakpoint.”

“Finally, Ghost Recon Breakpoint did not come in with enough differentiation factors, which prevented the game’s intrinsic qualities from standing out”.

Due to Ghost Recon Breakpoint’s launch day issues in particular, Ubisoft is “implementing significant changes” to its production processes. Multiple games pencilled in for early 2020 have also been delayed.

Watch Dogs: Legion is perhaps the biggest game to be affected by delays. The game was due to come out in March 2020 but will now release sometime between the 1st of July and the end of December 2020. Gods and Monsters also falls into this category with the same release window. Rainbow Six Quarantine was also expected in early 2020 but will now arrive some time between the 1st of April 2020 and the 31st of March 2021. Two unannounced Triple A games are also due out in this time frame, one of which is presumably the next Assassin’s Creed.

While Ubisoft’s early 2020 release calendar is now sparse, the publisher is still committed to continued updates and improvements to The Division 2 and Ghost Recon Breakpoint in an effort to eventually win players over.

KitGuru Says: I’m a tad surprised that The Division 2 significantly under-performed due to positive reviews and reactions from streamers. Ghost Recon Breakpoint seems a bit more obvious as the game didn’t have much positive buzz around it over the course of this year. Did any of you happen to play either of these games? Do you think ‘live service’ games should focus more on evolving over time rather than moving on to sequels every few years?

If you never had the chance to play through Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag or Ubisoft's World in Conflict, then now is the perfect time. For the next couple of days, you can grab all three of these games for free on PC.

Ubisoft announced that it would be giving away Assassin's Creed IV and World in Conflict earlier this month. Initially, this giveaway was due to end on the 18th of December for Assassin's Creed and the 11th for World in Conflict. However, instead of ending it, Ubisoft has extended the period and thrown Watch Dogs into the mix.

This is part of Ubisoft's ‘Happy Playdays' holiday promotion. All you need to do to claim all three games is head over to Ubisoft's page HERE, log in to your uPlay account and have the games added to your library. Once the games are in your library, they are yours to keep forever.

You do need to be fairly quick though, this giveaway ends on the 23rd of December at 10AM here in the UK.

KitGuru Says: Ubisoft was giving away Watch Dogs for a little bit earlier this year, so if you missed out the first time, you have a second chance now. Aside from that, Assassin's Creed IV is one of the best entries in the series, so it is certainly worth grabbing if you never played it.

If you never had the chance to play through the original Watch Dogs, then now is the perfect time as Ubisoft is giving the game away for free on PC this week. The 2014 hacker thriller may not have been as graphically impressive as its E3 reveal led us to believe, but as a free download, it is certainly a game worth giving a shot.

Watch Dogs 1 revolves around Aiden Pierce, a hacker on a quest for revenge after losing his niece in a car accident orchestrated by two hitmen, The game itself takes place in a faithful recreation of Chicago, which is heavily monitored by the ctOS, a city-wide government surveillance program.

All you need to do to claim your free copy of Watch Dogs on PC is head over to Ubisoft's promotion page. From there, you can sign up for a uPlay account and receive the game for free. If you already have an account, then the promotion should pop up the next time you log in.

The game will be given away starting from 4PM today and this offer ends on the 13th of November. Once the game is tied to your account, it is yours to play forever.

KitGuru Says: Watch Dogs is certainly worth playing if you've never tried it. Don't expect too many changes to the usual Ubisoft open-world formula, but the story is intriguing enough. It is also a good first step towards playing Watch Dogs 2, which was one of my favourite games of 2016.

There have been rumours surrounding Watch Dogs' connection to Assassin's Creed for some time now. There were several Easter eggs to be found in both Watch Dogs 1 and 2 linking back to the Assassin's Creed series. However, now in Assassin's Creed: Origins, the connection appears to be confirmed.

Be warned, there are some minor spoilers for Assassin's Creed: Origins that follow. Very minor in-fact, but still, if you want to remain unspoiled, bail out now.

A few hours into the Assassin's Creed: Origins campaign, you will come across a second ‘present day' segment, in which you exit the animus and get to walk around and learn some additional details about Abstergo. During this section, you can browse a laptop with all sorts of files stored.

One of the folders contains profiles on Abstergo employees. You can enter into this and see the file on ‘Oliver Garneau', from there, you will see CCTV camera footage of Aiden Pierce shooting him in the middle of the road. Aiden Pierce was the protagonist of Watch Dogs 1, cementing the connection between the two franchises.

This isn't the only times Assassin's Creed and Watch Dogs have crossed over. Back when AC: Black Flag launched, there was a modern day segment featuring Garneau, who later appeared in a side quest in Watch Dogs. At first, Ubisoft brushed this off as a ‘little joke' but now several years later, the developers seem to be running with it.

KitGuru Says: I've been loving Assassin's Creed: Origins so far and while I didn't enjoy Watch Dogs 1 much, the second game in the series was one of my favourite games of 2016. I would love to see this connection to the two franchises explored further in a third Watch Dogs game, perhaps with a mission or campaign revolving around Abstergo Industries.

Watch Dogs wasn't quite the home-run that Ubisoft was hoping for when it was released in early 2014, after years of teases and showcases; especially graphically. However it was successful enough to garner a sequel it seems, as a trailer for it has leaked ahead of next week's E3 show.

Although unconfirmed by Ubisoft, the trailer does make it quite clear what it's about. It was found by freelance game developer Steve “@Fobwashed” Kim who spotted the video as a Twitch advert and managed to record it before it was taken down. It seems someone at Twitch had an itchy trigger finger when it came to making the advert live.

The trailer shows that the game is set in San Francisco, that the new hot craze is wearing horse head masks and that Deadsec is making its big return. The graphics looks fantastic, though seem in-engine rather than in-game, so that isn't very telling considering the history we have with Watch Dog reveal trailers looking little like the final game.

We also learned that the game will available on the 15th November this year. That's not that far away. Expect more details at E3.

KitGuru Says: Are you excited for a Watch Dogs sequel? I must admit the first one is still on my ever-growing list of “to play,” games that I'll probably never get to.

Apparently the backlash caused by the blatant graphical downgrade of Watch Dogs following its release compared to the initial E3 reveal ended up sparking a policy change over at Ubisoft, according to the company's CEO, Yves Guillemot. According to Guillemot, Ubisoft has now changed the way it shows off new titles to avoid misleading gamers.

During an interview with The Guardian, Guillemot noted that this year for E3, Ubisoft developers ensured all games were actually playable on their platforms before showing them off: “With E3 2015 we said, ‘OK, let's make sure the games are playable, that they're running on the target machines”.

gaming-watch-dogs-5-600x336

“When we show something, we ask the team to make sure it's playable and make sure gamers can immediately see exactly what it is. That's what we learned from the Watch Dogs experience–if it can't be played on the target machine, it can be a risk”.

This appears to be in direct response to fan disappointment following the launch of Watch Dogs, which did not end up looking as good as it did initially back in 2012. Obviously for games that have already been shown off for years, like The Division, this policy change has come a little too late. However, new games like the new Ghost Recon, For Honour, or Assassin's Creed Syndicate, what we have seen so far should hopefully be what we get.

Unfortunately, this is also the same company that has promised to do right by PC gamers for years and consistently failed to do so, making it hard to trust what the company says at face value.

KitGuru Says: We won't know for sure if Ubisoft is telling the truth until we see some newly announced games launch over the next year or two. That said, it would be good to see Ubisoft start to build back up and finally put its mistakes in the past.
