Apple has started to send out invitations to its event allegedly related to Apple Watch. The conference with the press and various market analysts will take place in early March, several weeks ahead of commercial release of the product. It is expected that Apple will finally unveil all technical details at the event.

The conference will be hosted in Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, California, on the 9th of March, 2015. The session is called “Spring Forward”, which clearly refers to time, hence, it is more than likely that Apple will talk about its highly-anticipated smartwatch there. Traditionally, Apple does not discuss topics it plans to cover at its future events.

Among the things that Apple is expected to reveal at the seminar are technical specifications of Apple Watch products, their exact hardware capabilities, noteworthy applications and the company’s strategy for software and hardware of wearables. The company will also likely reveal exact prices of its forthcoming products.

Apple Watch is powered by the S1 system-in-package that sports application processor, memory and various interfaces. The smartwatch is able to run various applications specifically developed for it as well as work as a health and fitness tracker. Two versions of Apple Watch – smaller and bigger – will be available. The smaller 38mm version of Apple Watch will feature 272*340 display resolution, whereas the larger flavor will sport 312*390 screen resolution, exact sizes of the displays are unclear.

The most affordable Apple Watch – the Watch Sport – will cost $349. Versions made of stainless steel will cost up to $1000, whereas golden Watch Edition will cost several thousands of dollars with some predicting as much as $19,999.

With its Watch product Apple does not only enter the market of wearable gadgets, but it enters the big market of watches in general, which it wants to redefine. The company remains rather secretive about its strategy concerning its Watch products, but some analysts believe that Apple will sell millions of its smartwatch this year.

Apple announced on Tuesday during its earning call that it will start commercial shipments of its highly-anticipated Apple Watch device in April. While the company will start shipments of its new gadget later than expected, its management believes that the new product will become popular both among end-users and among developers.

“Development of Apple Watch is right on schedule and we expect to begin shipping in April,” said Tim Cook, chief executive officer of Apple, during a conference call with investors and financial analysts. “Developers are hard at work on apps, notifications and information summaries that we call Glances, all designed specifically for the Watch’s user interface.”

Apple Watch is based on the S1 system-on-chip that sports application processor, memory and various interfaces. The device is able to run various applications specifically designed for it as well as work as a health and fitness tracker. Two versions of Apple Watch – smaller and bigger – will be available. The most affordable Apple Watch – the Watch Sport – will cost $349. Versions made of stainless steel will cost up to $1000, whereas golden Watch Edition will cost several thousands of dollars.

Apple seems to pin a lot of hopes on Watch. Unfortunately, the company officially does not reveal expectations concerning sales of the product. Independent analysts predict that Apple will sell millions of its smartwatch this year.

“My expectations are very high on [Apple Watch],” said Mr. Cook. “I am using it every day, and loving it, and I cannot live without it.”

According to Apple’s management, software developers are eager to design programs for the Apple Watch platform.

“I see we are making great progress on the developer side,” said the CEO of Apple. “We are seeing some incredible innovation coming out there.”

KitGuru Says: While Apple is one of the world’s largest makers of consumer electronics, it should be noted that its first-generation gadgets from the company are traditionally not very successful. Moreover, sometimes their technological limitations are too significant. It remains to be seen whether the Apple Watch will become an immediate hit, or will share the destiny of the original iPhone and iPad.

Apple revealed screen resolutions of its upcoming Apple Watch timepieces to software developers in the WatchKit SDK [software development kit] that was released this week as part of the iOS 8.2 SDK beta. Both 38mm and 42mm versions of the company’s smart-watches will feature retina-class displays, but with different resolutions.

The smaller 38mm version of Apple Watch will feature 272*340 display resolution, whereas the larger flavor will sport 312*390 screen resolution, according to MacRumours. The displays feature 4:5 aspect ratio, but their sizes are still unclear (yet, approximate screen sizes can be guessed). It is noteworthy that pixel density of Apple Watch’s displays is not particularly high. If the diagonal of the 42mm Watch’s screen is 2” – 2.1”, then the pixel density of the display will be around 250 – 240ppi, which is below that of the iPad’s display (263ppi).

For example, software developers are allowed to use the same icons and image assets on different types of Apple Watch, provided that they “look good on both screen sizes.” The content displayed on different versions of the timepieces “should be the same regardless of the device's screen size.”

Among the recommendations, Apple gives to programmers is the suggestion that the content for Apple Watch should be tailored for usage model of the device. Apple expects users to access micro-apps for its smartwatch “briefly, frequently, and on a small display,” which is why all the possible interactions should be very simple and “accessible and dismissible quickly and easily, for both privacy and usability.”

Apple also notes that Apple Watch was designed to “blur the boundaries between physical object and software” through the Digital Crown navigation tool, the Taptic Engine for subtle alerts, and Force Touch, an innovative touch control system. Attentive design of applications “should contribute to this experience of hardware and software feeling indistinguishable.”

Apple Watch devices are expected to hit the market in the first half of 2015. The most affordable version – Apple Watch Sport – will cost $349 in the U.S., whereas more advanced versions made of 316L stainless steel (Apple Watch collection) or 18-karat gold (Apple Watch Edition collection) are projected to cost starting from $1000 and $5000, respectively.

The iOS 8.2 SDK beta including WatchKit is available immediately for iOS Developer Program members at developer.apple.com/watchkit. The WatchKit site includes programming guides, human interface guidelines, templates and more. Starting later next year, developers will be able to create fully native apps for Apple Watch.

Apple did not comment on the news-story.

KitGuru Says: If Apple’s 42mm Watch has 2” display and ~240ppi pixel density, then its screen will look somewhat more blurry compared to the display of Samsung Gear S (2”, 360*480, 300ppi), not exactly a good thing. On the other hand, Apple’s first-generation devices traditionally have a number of drawbacks that are fixed in the following generations of products.
