It looks like developer interest in the smartwatch is starting to die out as Google, Amazon and eBay have all quietly dropped support for the Apple Watch in some of their apps over the last few weeks. Smartwatches have been available on the market for several years now and while the Apple Watch did end up outselling comparable Android Wear offerings, adoption overall has been fairly slow.

This particular trend was first spotted by the folks over at AppleInsider, reporting that Google Maps, Amazon and eBay no longer work on the Apple Watch. At the time of writing, Amazon and eBay have not commented on the removal of Apple Watch support from their iOS apps. However, Google did respond, stating that Google Maps would return to Apple Watch, though no specific reason was given for removal of support, nor was there a timeframe for when it may return.

For now, these changes could be temporary across the board but the companies involved, including Apple, are keeping quiet on the subject. Still, WWDC is right around the corner, so perhaps we will see another surge in Apple Watch interest if any new announcements are made.

KitGuru Says: Wearable technology has always been a fairly niche area. No company has successfully managed to convince the masses that they need smartphone functionality on their wrist just yet. However, it does seem like it's a bit too soon to give up on the idea completely.

When Apple first announced the Apple Watch, the device could not run many of its own native apps. Instead, apps had to connect back to an iPhone through Bluetooth in order to borrow processing power. However, eventually Apple got WatchOS to a point where developers could run apps natively, without needing to be tethered to an iPhone and soon, native apps will be mandatory.

This week, Apple has let its WatchOS developers know that it wants all apps submitted to the platform to run natively on the Apple Watch from the 1st of June onwards.

Developers have been able to publish native apps since WWDC back in June 2015, when the Watch SDK 2.0 launched. However, from this June onwards, all app submissions must be running natively on the Apple Watch, meaning developers will need to dig in and squeeze what they can from the hardware without relying on a tethered iPhone.

This cut-off sate is just a couple of weeks away from Apple's next WWDC event, at which Apple will announce its new software slate for the year, which could include an updated version of WatchOS, along with a new version of Mac OS X and iOS.

KitGuru Says: This is all in preparation for the new WatchOS and likely, the Apple Watch 2, which should début later this year with some enhanced hardware and features.

Thanks to release of Apple Watch in the second calendar quarter of 2015, the market of smartwatch devices more than quadrupled in the period. Apple’s Watch was so successful that it not only outsold all of its rivals, but it outsold all of its competitors combined. At present Apple controls three quarters of the global smartwatch market.

Strategy Analytics believes that total available market of smart time pieces in Q2 2015 was around 5.3 million units, which means that the market grew an impressive 457 percent annually from one million units in Q2 2014. Last year the whole market of smartwatches totaled 4.6 million units.

Apple sold four million Apple Watch in the Q2 2015, believes Strategy Analytics. Apple itself clearly indicated that it sold over 3.3 million Apple Watch units in the second quarter, but did not provide any exact numbers. Market observers from Strategy Analytics believe that Apple Watch has clearly raised the bar for the global smartwatch industry.

The analysts estimate that Samsung, who controlled nearly 75 per cent of smartwatch market in the second quarter of 2014, shipped 0.4 million smartwatches and captured 8 per cent market share worldwide. In fact, Apple and Samsung together account for 8 in 10 of all smartwatches shipped globally. All other companies are far behind market leaders and it is unknown when and if they can catch up.

Market observers believe that going forward smartwatches will get cheaper and will gain functionality. As a result, their sales will significantly increase.

“It is very early days for mass market smartwatches,” wrote Cliff Raskind, an analyst with Strategy Analytics, in a blog post. “ASP's will drop, experiences will improve dramatically, apps leveraging the unique I/O attributes that wearable devices bring to the table will proliferate. The future is bright for wearables.”

KitGuru Says: It is not surprising that Apple Watch is a successful product: the company has tens of millions of loyal customers, who will eventually get the company’s chronometer. The big question is whether popularity of Apple Watch will also increase sales of smartwatches by other companies. Tim Cook once said that the toughest challenge is to make people wear smartwatches. While there are millions of people, who already do, there are hundreds of millions who either keep their mechanical time pieces, or just do not use any wrist watches at all…

As expected, Apple did not reveal exact sales numbers of its Apple Watch device during the first quarter of availability at its conference call, however, it did say that the product was more successful in terms of unit sales than iPad and iPhone in their first quarter of availability. This means that the company sold over three million Apple Watch units, which is a significant amount.

“Sales of the Watch did exceed our expectations and they did so despite supply still trailing demand at the end of the quarter,” said Tim Cook, chief executive officer of Apple, at the company’s earnings conference call with investors and financial analysts. “In fact, the Apple Watch sell-through was higher than the comparable launch periods of the original iPhone or the original iPad.”

Sales of Apple iPhone in the first quarter of availability were 270 thousand units, whereas shipments of iPad in the first quarter of availability were 3.27 million units.

It should be noted that there were supply constraints of Apple Watch during the quarter, which means that actual shipments could have been higher.

Apple believes that sales of its Apple Watch will continue to be strong going forward. Moreover, the company hopes that its Watch will be a top gift during the holiday season, just like iPod players were back in the days. At present Apple is trying to expand production of its smartwatch products in a bid to fulfill demand in the future.

“We are now planning to expand our channel before the holiday because we are convinced that the Watch is going to be one of the top gifts of the holiday season,” said Mr. Cook.

Earlier this week a financial analyst estimated that shipments of Apple Watch in the first quarter of availability hit 3.9 million units. Apple’s own indications confirm that this could be an accurate assumption.

KitGuru Says: Keeping in mind that wearables yet have to prove their value to consumers, sales of Apple Watch deserve a lot of respect. Apparently, many people believed that Apple’s Watch is a decent gadget. As a result, the product became more popular than any other wearable smart electronics device made by companies like Pebble or Samsung.
