ioSafe may be a new name to you but the company from Auburn, California have been in the business of physical data protection since 2005 producing fireproof and waterproof storage devices for home and business users alike. The company cover all forms of storage from servers to portable external drives. The ioSafe 216 is a 2-Bay NAS for the home and small business.

So you might be thinking just how fireproof and waterproof are these devices? Using ioSafe's DataCast and HydroSafe protection technologies, the company states that the 216 can protect data from fire damage up to 843° C (1550°F) for 30 minutes and survive being under 10ft of water for up to three, yes three days.

The ioSafe 216 is powered by a Synology motherboard, uses the Synology DSM O/S and is a 2-Bay NAS so it's pretty safe to assume it's based around a DiskStation DS216, but a DS216 that has been injecting steroids. If you compare the weights of the drives, you may get an inkling of what the ioSafe is all about. A standard DS216 weighs in at svelte 1.3kg, the ioSafe 216 crashes the scales at an eye watering, arm numbing 12.7kg!

Specifications

  • Armada 385 1.3GHz CPU
  • Gigabit LAN
  • 512MB DDR3
  • 1-year Warranty
  • 1-year Data Recovery Service

Although Tesoro had a lot of mice and headsets on show at this year's Computex, it was its keyboards that stood out the most. Amongst all of the Cherry MX equipped, RGB backlit boards though, was one stark, white one, with a brand new type of infrared mechanical switch under the hood.

Tesoro packed its booth with a lot of fancy looking hardware at Computex 2016. There was the Aegis mouse mat teamed up with the Ascalon mouse, the Kuven Pro and Olivant Pro headsets – but it was really the keyboards that were front and centre.

The Colada and Durandal Spectrum keyboards were quite typical of the sort of gaming boards which are most vogue right now – black with RGB backlighting, USB-passthrough etc. There were a number of other nice features on display, but it was really the new white keyboard Tesoro had on show.

Although it wasn't named by Tesoro at the event, it was clearly the company's pride and joy as it told our man on the scene, Leo Waldock, all about its new switch design. Known as the infrared IR switch, it has a traditional mechanical interface, but instead of actuating as it would normally, that happens when a ‘blade' breaks a beam of infrared light.

This is said to improve the actuation speed of each key, though we have no numbers on how much faster.

As is evidenced by the pictures too, Tesoro was also touting the keyboard's ability to be washed down without being damaged.

Over the last year or two, water resistance and dust proof ratings have become an increasing selling point with some smartphones. Last month, Apple revealed the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, each with a slew of new features over last year's models. However, one thing that wasn't mentioned was that Apple has practically made the iPhone 6s waterproof.

The discovery was made by iFixit during one of its popular product tear downs, which help rate how easy it is to fix a specific device. Both the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus feature new technology that make them more resistant to liquid damage than past models.

iPhone+6s+ifixit+waterproof

Apple has packed a new gasket around the sides of the iPhone 6s and encased every cable and connector on the iPhone's logic board with waterproof material for extra protection, which is a pretty good solution considering that other manufacturers tend to focus on the device's ports.

While Samsung and Sony have previously championed water resistance features in the past, Apple has been very quiet on the subject, likely in an effort to not raise consumer expectations. Obviously you shouldn't be taking your smartphone in to the shower, or over exposing it to water, but it is good to know that your iPhone will be protected should you be out in the rain.

KitGuru Says: Apple usually champions any feat of engineering, heck, it made a huge deal out of last year's iPad Air 2, which was slightly thinner than a pencil. However, it does make sense for the company to not raise expectations. The last thing Apple needs is for people to think that they can now go around dunking their iPhones in water.

While you can be as careful as you like with data when you are transporting it between sites, there's always the possibility of a complete accident. The one small slip that will see your drive fall down a load of stairs or into water (hot or otherwise). For those occasions, ADATA has a solution.

Although Vibrant Red and Wild Blue might sound like butterflies, they are actually the colour options for the sequentially-named ADATA S107.

The design utilises a special silicon compound to ensure that your data remains safe from liquids and surprises – while the pleasantly curved exterior will help you develop all sorts of OCD while you rotate it in your pocket.

ADATA claims that the S107 offers a ‘radical new approach to shock-resistant designs and SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interfaces, with a sporty exterior and dynamic design' and they also say that it is ‘perfect for users who have active lives and a strong sense of style'.

Internally, it seems to have been engineered to Military Grade shockproof standards – perfect for those with war zone jobs or teenage kids.

As you would expect, performance is lighting quick, with USB 3.0 read speeds of up to 100MB/second – allowing you to back up data almost 3 times quicker than with USB 2.0 interface.

Initial capacities available will be 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB and we're expecting pricing around the £10, £20 and £40 marks – but we're not sure if that includes any government taxes.

Snazzy looking ADATA drives - wonder exactly how much torture they will survive ?

KitGuru says: We're all individuals, so it's nice to see a major manufacturer spending a little time on the visual design and feature set of something as ubiquitous as a USB pen drive. Will certainly make it easier for you to spot across the office when some colleague attempts the ‘Oh, sorry, thought it was mine' line.
