Microsoft continues to struggle with its now awkwardly named Windows 10 October Update, after its resumed rollout has once again hit a roadblock. Beyond critical bugs deleting files and loss of Intel’s integrated sound, the latest developments to Update 1809 have seemingly broken Windows Media Player.

“After installing this update, users may not be able to use the Seek Bar in Windows Media Player when playing specific files,” Microsoft writes in its support document. “Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.”

The firm hasn’t divulged how many systems it estimates to be affected by the issue, but fortunately it sits as a minor issue in comparison to all that’s plagued the update so far. In an attempt to justify its on-going difficulties with the Update 1809, and perhaps dazzle with staggering numbers, Microsoft points to its web-like ecosystem.

“With Windows 10 alone we work to deliver quality to over 700 million monthly active Windows 10 devices, over 35 million application titles with greater than 175 million application versions, and 16 million unique hardware/driver combinations”, explains the firm.

“In addition, the ecosystem delivers new drivers, firmware, application updates and/or non-security updates daily. Simply put, we have a very large and dynamic ecosystem that requires constant attention and care during every single update. That all this scale and complexity can “just work” is key to Microsoft’s mission to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more.”

I do, personally, think Microsoft has earned a little leeway with its sheer scale, and this new issue acts more of a thorn in the side than outright breaking systems like previous version of the update have. Still, it would be preferable that the firm keeps a close eye on its Insiders, as they often point towards these kinds of issues months in advance, and hold off the rollout for those unwilling to put their files on the line.

KitGuru Says: I tend to default to VLC Media Player rather than Microsoft’s built-in solution anyway, a platform I would highly recommend due to its compatibility with different file types. Have you experienced any issues with Windows 1809?

Microsoft has had a troublesome time with its Windows 10 October update, attempting to quell numerous bugs that deleted user files, wrongly decompressed folders and even distorted text. Sadly, it seems as though these issues are far from over, as a security hole in the Universal Windows Platform has been giving applications full access to system files.

UWP applications often have limited access to a select number of files located in the individual directory, with requirements to ask for user permission to gain access to external files. In rare circumstances, applications will be granted “broadFileSystemAccess,” pending they meet Microsoft’s request for extra documentation reasoning why.

This allows access across “all files that the user has access to. For example: documents, pictures, photos, downloads, desktop, OneDrive, etc,” according to a developer documentation via Bleeding Computer. Windows 10’s October update, otherwise known as update 1908 unfortunately gave broadFileSystemAccess to every application during its limited rollout, allowing the more malicious of the bunch to effectively harvest and control user data.

Microsoft was already expected to withhold the update beyond October, but it is unclear how this newly revealed bug will affect the timeline of its release. The firm has yet to officially acknowledge the problem and the implications it might have on UWP.

KitGuru Says: This is perhaps Windows 10’s most buggy update yet, but fortunately it was held back before irreparable damage was done. Hopefully you’re not one of the few to have already downloaded the update, but if you are, how has it fared for you so far?

After a month of bug fixing, Microsoft’s Windows 10 October update looked ready for release and with it Nvidia RTX users were about to finally make use of the new ray-tracing technology. Sadly, more bugs have since cropped up in the operating system’s preview build, causing a delay that might last until November.

Microsoft pegged its worldwide launch for the Autumn 1809 update on October 9th, before abruptly pausing the rollout after early adopters reported their files going missing. The firm quickly isolated the cause and continued issuing the update to Insiders for further testing. While there was no specific time rescheduled for the public rollout, hopes have been resting on sooner rather than later as Nvidia’s ray-tracing technology remains firmly locked behind the new graphics API implementation.

Sadly, it’s looking less likely that Microsoft will have the update ready in time for its final Update Tuesday in October, the 30th, as yet more bugs have been identified. One issue surrounds the missing confirmation box that allows users to choose what happens to their files when unzipping a folder.

Instead of enabling the user to manually “replace the file in the destination,” “skip the file” or even just “compare information for both files,” the decompression could result in the loss of similarly named or original versions of the file. Like its more severe counterpart, this bug has similarly been reported earlier in the development of the 1809 update, yet seemingly went unnoticed.

A second issue surrounds fonts within Windows 10, causing a distortion that makes text illegible. While not limited to any specific program, apps effected include browsers like Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, as well as System Settings and text-based applications. Although this is undoubtedly caused by the Windows 10 October update, Reddit outlines a simple fix of updating the latest Intel Graphics Driver.

Microsoft hasn’t had the smoothest ride with its October update, as it rapidly becomes the November update. The firm acknowledged the existence of the bugs, stating that a solution is expected early next month. Unfortunately, this means a longer wait for the first Nvidia RTX owners to make full use of their new device.

KitGuru Says: Microsoft managed to win back a lot of faith when it helped Intel clean up its Spectre and Meltdown messes, but it seems that this faith has been flushed down the drain thanks to recent events. At the very least, the firm is ensuring that it won’t let major issues plague over 700 million users.

Microsoft hit the pause button on its Windows 10 October Update earlier this week, after it was revealed that some users had suffered random deletion of personal files. Fortunately, it seems as though all issues have since been resolved, allowing the firm to restart the rollout to Windows Insider beta members.

Although Windows Insiders had reported of file deletion within the Windows 10 October Update months ago, warnings went ignored until earlier this week. An increasing amount of complaints via the manual download of version 1809 finally drew Microsoft’s attention earlier this week, causing the company to hit the brakes on its automatic rollout.

According to John Cable, Microsoft’s director of program management, Windows servicing and delivery, just one one-hundredth of one percent that had installed 1809 early were affected by the bug. Considering that there are 700 million Windows 10 users, this could have affected 700,000 systems had the percentage not crept up upon automatically rolling out. Fortunately, despite the miniscule fraction, the firm knows that “any data loss is serious.”

The reason for the data loss was due to a bug with Known Folder Redirection (KFR) being confused for Known Folder Migration (KFM). “KFR is the process of redirecting the known folders of Windows including Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Screenshots, Videos, Camera Roll, etc. from the default folder location” such as the C:\ drive to a new location. KFM, however, is the process of actively moving those files to a new place, such as OneDrive.

Since the Windows 10 April Update, KFR has left empty duplicate Known Folders after the move, which version 1809 intended to clean up. Sadly for those with KFR enabled, the October Update got confused and ended up wiping the original folders instead, leaving the newer, empty folders intact.

Thankfully, because the data wasn’t physically removed but rather marked as “erased,” Microsoft has said that there is hope at data recovery, urging those affected to get in contact with support. Until users attempt the recovery process, the company has advised victims of the bug to use their device as little as possible in order to avoid overwriting the data paths.

Microsoft has since “investigated all reports of data loss, identified and fixed all known issues in the update, and conducted internal validation.” This has led to Microsoft lifting the lid on its October Update once again to Windows Insiders, with plans for an official release upon “confirmation that there is no further impact.”

KitGuru Says: The most infuriating thing is that this could have been nipped in the bud much earlier had Microsoft paid attention to its feedback hub. Unfortunately, the lack of upvotes let the problem slip through, pointing towards fundamental flaws on how Microsoft’s feedback system truly works. Have your files been affected by the latest update?
