In recent years, upscaling features have become a staple for PC gamers, with many utilising DLSS, FSR or XeSS to save on performance. Now, Microsoft appears to be working on its own AI-assisted upscaling feature, which will come baked right into Windows.

The new feature will appear in the System-Display-Graphics menu and is listed as ‘Automatic Super Resolution. The description of the feature, as spotted on Twitter, reads: “use AI to make supported games play more smoothly with enhanced details.”

Without diving too much into the technical side, this does sound a lot like Nvidia's DLSS, which utilises AI to upscale games rendered at lower resolutions to enable significant performance gains. Of course, DLSS works by utilising the Tensor Cores available on RTX GPUs, so it is unclear how well Microsoft's Windows alternative will work without any dedicated AI hardware.

As reported by The Verge, Microsoft is also looking to upgrade Windows colour management to make better use of new OLED and HDR displays, something that has been needed for quite some time as HDR on Windows is still pretty bad, despite HDR monitor availability greatly increasing since the launch of Windows 11.

Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: Chances are, DLSS will continue to lead when it comes to visuals and performance gains. Still, it will be interesting to see comparisons later in the year and at the very least, having something like this implemented at the OS level could improve compatibility, as not all games support DLSS, FSR or XeSS out of the box.

Microsoft is planning to update the Windows colour management settings. Already available on the latest Insider preview build, the update brings improved profile management and a Windows 11-like UI. Moreover, it also added “Color management” to the Windows 11 Settings Display page.

Since the launch of Windows 11, Microsoft has been working hard to modernise the operating system's features, moving away from the old-fashioned appearance of Windows XP, particularly in graphics and display settings. The latest Canary and Dev release has introduced a new and simplified colour management interface, with the system now able to select the appropriate colour profile for specific applications automatically. Users can easily apply profiles to each connected monitor, making it easier to manage colour settings.

This upgrade is particularly interesting for professionals who require precise colour reproduction in their work. It's worth noting that the new colour management system also includes a colour calibration option, which will hopefully work better than Windows' current calibration tools.

The new features are currently only for users with access to the Dev or Canary channels (Build 26052). However, it's important to note that these builds are not intended for daily use, as they may contain patches that could result in unexpected behaviour. The new colour management page can be found under Settings > System > Display > Colour Management.

KitGuru says: How important is it to you to have your display calibrated? Did you ever calibrate your monitor, or are you using it as it came out of the box?

Upscaling methods have revolutionised gaming, allowing users to improve their experience without sacrificing much visual quality (sometimes even improving it). This innovation has also empowered developers to create games that might have otherwise struggled to run smoothly, especially when dealing with features such as ray tracing or path tracing.

A recent report suggests that Microsoft is exploring integrating upscaling solutions for apps in the upcoming Windows 11 update (24H2). While the feature is meant to be hidden, some tech-savvy users have found references to it and the switch to turn it on.

The functionality is accessible under System → Display → Graphics, where users can enable “Automatic super resolution” or customise their settings per app.

The possibilities of this technology for Windows apps are numerous. One example would be media players, which can benefit from Super Resolution without being dependent on specific app builds supporting RTX Video Super Resolution or FidelityFX Super Resolution. Another would be games, working as an alternative to Radeon Super Resolution and NIS.

The functionality is currently available in the Windows 11 24H2 version, which is expected to be launched later this year.

KitGuru says: Would you welcome a Super Resolution feature such as this? In what kind of apps would you use it the most?

We might not get Windows 12 after all. According to a recent report, it seems that the AI-centric changes coming to Windows will arrive via a regular update to Windows 11, rather than an entire a new OS.

As per Windows Central, Microsoft is developing a major upgrade for Windows 11 called Hudson Valley. Expected to be released later this year as “version 24H2” or the 2024 update, it's rumoured to bring significant improvements over last year's version 23H2, including better performance, security, quality-of-life upgrades, and several new features.

The Hudson Valley update will focus on delivering next-generation AI experiences, which Microsoft has indicated interest in over the past year. According to insiders, this upgrade will introduce an updated Copilot that will leverage AI and machine learning to improve the Windows user experience and productivity across applications, search, and more. Microsoft is expected to finalise the 24H2 update during the summer and plans to release it in September.

Microsoft is testing some of the new features of the upcoming version via the Insider Canary Channel. Some of these features include improved Snap Layouts with machine learning that recommends frequently snapped applications for a more simplified user experience, the ability to create 7zip and TAR compressed archive files in File Explorer, a new refresh button for the Wi-Fi list, and a new “Energy Saver” mode that conserves energy on both battery-powered and plugged-in PCs.

Additionally, the Phone Link feature will be improved, enabling the use of a connected phone as a camera. Other general enhancements include a new “Install drivers” button on the Wi-Fi configuration page, removing some built-in Windows apps, and a new “Windows protected print mode” for Mopria-certified printers.

Although there was speculation that this upgrade may be branded as “Windows 12,” insiders suggest that it will most likely remain a Windows 11 update, especially after the departure of ex-Windows CEO Panos Panay.

CES is coming up and as expected, a slew of new laptops are due to be announced, with much of the marketing set to revolve around AI functionality. As part of this push, Microsoft is now working with OEMs to ensure that new Windows laptops ship with a new keyboard key to launch the Windows 11 Copilot feature.

Copilot has been available to Windows 11 users for a while now, acting as a new AI-based digital assistant for tasks, similar to ChatGPT but not quite as clever just yet. As more professionals and creators begin to leverage AI tools in their daily tasks, Microsoft is banking on the Copilot key being a useful feature for new laptop buyers.

Some of the newly announced Dell XPS laptops will feature the Copilot key on the keyboard and we can expect plenty of other OEMs to do the same thing. We'll see just how prevalent the Copilot key will be soon, as more laptops are announced and shown off at CES, which kicks off on the 8th of January.

AI will continue to be a key focus for Microsoft this year, particularly as the company works towards Windows 12, which will aim to “blur the lines” between local and cloud-assisted computing. Windows 12 is rumoured to be heading our way later this year. If true, we should have some solid details on the new OS before the summer.

KitGuru Says: Having a Copilot key doesn't necessarily need to be an issue, but if it is placed in a position where you may accidentally press it often, then it will be viewed as an annoyance and likely drive users away. Fortunately, there will likely be ways to disable it if needed.

CES is set to kick off shortly and Dell is eager to get its new product announcements rolling. Ahead of the event, Dell has announced its new range of XPS laptops, designed with minimalist principles while trying to maximise performance.

The InfinityEdge display on the new XPS laptops immediately stands out and will be available in an OLED Touch option too. Each of the new 2024 XPS laptops ships with an InfinityEdge display with variable refresh rate support, high-resolution options and support for features like Dolby Vision. On the audio side, Dell has opted for a quad-speaker design with Dolby Atmos support. Above the display, you'll find a Full HD webcam for clear images during video calls.

Under the hood, Dell is using Intel's new Core Ultra processors, which also support AI acceleration. As a result, these laptops will be positioned as productivity and creativity enhancers with the ability to leverage generative AI tools outside of the cloud. All the new XPS laptops will also ship with Windows 11 as well as an enhanced battery with ExpressCharge tech, allowing the laptop to charge up to 80 percent in one hour.

The XPS 16 will be the flagship, offering up to RTX 4070 graphics for the GPU. The smaller XPS 14 will be limited to an RTX 4050 at best and it seems that the XPS 13 will rely on integrated graphics.

The new Dell XPS range will be available soon, starting in the US at $1,299 for the XPS 13, $1699 for the XPS 14 and $1899 for the XPS 16.

Microsoft is poised to introduce a new built-in recovery method for Windows 11, allowing users to reinstall or recover the OS without losing any existing files. The new function, named “Fix Problems with Windows Update,” is already available for Insiders via Windows Update but is expected to make its way to a stable release soon.

There are multiple ways to reinstall Windows, whether using the Media Creation Tool, a general ISO image, or the “Reset this PC” feature, each serving its purpose based on the user's needs. This new method, however, differs slightly as it leverages Windows Update. In more detail, it downloads and installs a “repair version” of the OS without removing any files, settings, or apps. Once the process is complete, the repaired content is displayed on the Windows Update Settings page with the title appended with “(repair version).”

The new feature will be accessible through the ‘Settings > System > Recovery' menu, expediting the restoration of Windows 11 in various situations. Insiders on the Canary Channel and other eligible channels can already use the Beta version of this tool.

In addition to this new reinstallation method, the next major Windows 11 update, due in February, will bring quality-of-life enhancements, such as improved digital pen functionality, enhanced emoji appearance, and the addition of the AI Hub to the Microsoft Store.

Windows 11 KB5030310 has received a lot of attention for providing a lot of new capabilities brought by ‘Moment 4'. This is one of the most significant upgrades in recent months, and it includes Windows Copilot, a new File Explorer, and other features. However, customers have experienced some issues with its installation, including a bug that resets the AMD Adrenalin driver settings.

According to Windows Latest (via VideoCardz), the Windows 11 KB5030310 upgrade may create difficulties with AMD Adrenalin drivers, such as resetting the control panel's custom settings every time the system reboots. This issue has no effect on the graphics driver itself, but it is still inconvenient for users who have it adjusted to their preferences.

While AMD and Microsoft are working on a solution, people are already exploring workarounds for this bug. Disabling the Windows Copilot function, which was added with the KB5030310 update, is one potential fix for this problem. Another approach is to remove the update and wait for Microsoft or AMD to provide a permanent repair.

Users who were trying AMD's new capabilities, such as HYPR-RX or Fluid Motion Frames, which are activated per game, may be frustrated by the problem. If the settings are not saved, they will have to be applied again with each cold system startup. AMD and Microsoft are likely to release a solution for the problem soon.

Following a recent Windows 11 update, MSI motherboard users began reporting BSOD errors. If you've encountered this, then you'll be relieved to learn that Microsoft is already aware of the issue and is working on a fix.

The update began rolling out earlier this week. As The Verge shows, the BSOD error states that an “Unsupported processor” is being used after installing the latest KB5029351 update for Windows 11. A number of Reddit users have reported experiencing the same issue.

In a support note on the Windows Health Centre, Microsoft confirms that it is “investigating” to find the cause of this issue and roll out a fix. In the meantime, those using Windows 11's latest update and an MSI motherboard can use the Windows Recovery tool to rollback the patch update and continue using their PC again as usual. This process may happen automatically upon restarting the system if Windows' error correction and detection tools are working correctly.

It is possible that the issue could be linked to a recent MSI motherboard BIOS update, which adds support for Intel's upcoming 14th-gen Core processors. These chips are rumoured to be based on an improved version of the Raptor Lake architecture.

The next Windows 11 update will be a welcome one for those using multiple high refresh rate monitors. Currently, multi monitor setups can pose certain challenges, but a new update that enables automatic refresh rate adjustments per monitor should clean up a number of bugs.

In a recent Windows Insider blog, Microsoft says it has “improved refresh rate logic to allow different refresh rates on different monitors”. The refresh rate will adjust based on the content shown on each display. If you’ve ever tried playing a game on one high refresh monitor and then watch a video on the second screen, then you may have noticed choppiness and odd refresh rate behaviour. This update should fix exactly that.

As The Verge points out, this could also help those using Nvidia’s RTX 30 or RTX 40 Founders Edition graphics cards, as it means these graphics cards should now be able to use Zero RPM mode reliably when using multiple monitors running at high refresh rates.

Dynamic Refresh Rate improvements are also coming to Windows 11 laptops to help aid battery life when using the battery saver power profile. Both changes are currently in public testing through the Windows Insider Canary channel and should roll out to all users, including non-Insider members, before the end of the year.

Microsoft is taking the next big step forward in Windows 11 by introducing new features. These include a typable Windows search box, the new AI-powered Bing straight into the taskbar, smartphone link improvements, the ability to record using the snipping tool, and many more.

Although Microsoft is marketing the new typable search box (basically Windows 10 search bar) as being “AI-powered”, that's not entirely the case. Typing a query into the search box and hitting Enter will open the Edge browser and show you the output of the search if your Microsoft account has access to the new Bing chatbot. That's not much different from Windows 10's search box or searching directly from the Bing address bar. In all three scenarios, you'll get similar results.

However, there are some features which aren't a letdown. For example, the new Windows notepad version introduces tabs, allowing multiple files to be opened on a single window. Microsoft also introduced the ability to record using the snipping tool, allowing you to record only a section of the screen. The downside of this handy feature is that the app only lets you save files in MP4.

In the latest build, the AI-powered Windows Studio Effects (eye contact, background blur, automatic framing and voice focus) also received some love. Those who've updated their Windows 11 OS can now adjust Windows Studio Effects directly from the taskbar in quick settings. In addition, Microsoft also integrated the call enhancement tool into Microsoft Teams.

Other features introduced include a new preview of the iPhone Link feature, which allows you to connect your iPhone to the PC to receive calls and texts and access iCloud photos, and a new version of Android Phone Link that enables users to turn on the mobile hotspot from within Windows on Samsung devices.

Lastly, the new build brings new widgets for Phone Link, Xbox Game Pass and Spotify, energy-saving tips, redesigned Quick Assist app, the ability to collapse the taskbar, new accessibility features like braille display support, AI-powered File recommendations on the Start menu, and a Windows 365 App. If you're interested in Windows 11's new features, you can get them with build 22621.1344, now available to download on your system.

Typically when customising RGB peripherals, many of us use the official apps from the likes of Corsair, Logitech and others. Soon, Microsoft may make it possible to control your RGB LEDs without additional software thanks to a new built-in controller for Windows 11.

Microsoft has been working on a Windows feature to control the RGB lighting of your peripherals for some years. As you can see in this document shared by Albacore (via TheVerge), the specification for a built-in Windows RGB-controlling software was created back in 2018. However, Microsoft has only now implemented it on Windows 11 Preview. On the preview build 25295, Microsoft introduced a basic universal solution to control the RGB lighting of the peripherals connected to the system.

As you can see above, a few screenshots show the UI and the settings available. From what we can see, the software will allow you to control the RGB lighting of a keyboard, headset, mouse, and even a streaming deck. In other words, anything with RGB lighting that connects to a PC through a USB port. As for the customisable settings, you could control the lighting's brightness, effects, effects speed, the colours and allow it to match your Windows colour palette.

Microsoft hasn't yet officially said anything about this feature, but now that it has launched on the Windows 11 Preview, it shouldn't be long before we have some official details.

If you have an MSI motherboard and you're having issues with undervolting and overvolting your Intel CPU, it could be due to a recent Windows 11 update, which appears to have mistakenly blocked these features.

According to this post on MSIGaming subreddit (via Tom's Hardware), since a relatively recent Windows 11 update, the operating system automatically enables Microsoft's Virtualization-based Security (VBS), or as Microsoft calls it, ‘Memory Integrity'. Once enabled, this feature blocks access to specific registry entries, including those needed by software overclocking tools and monitoring software like CPU-Z.

MSI is already working on new BIOS for 600, 500, and 400 series motherboards. A test BIOS for the 600-series boards already exists, but it still needs some testing before releasing it to the public.

If  your system was affected by this bug and you need an immediate workaround, you can disable VBS by accessing the Device Security category in the Windows Security app. Once there, look for ‘Core Isolation' and disable the ‘Memory Integrity' feature.

Prior to Windows 10, Microsoft would release a new version of Windows roughly every three to four years. It seems that following on from Windows 11, Microsoft will be returning to this release cadence, meaning we'll be seeing Windows 12 in 2024.

As reported by Windows Central, Microsoft is shaking up its Windows division again to go back to three-year release cycles for new versions of Windows. Microsoft is said to already have plans for Windows 12, which should release in 2024.

This has also made some changes to planned updates for Windows 11. While Microsoft initially planned to continue providing two major updates per year, just as it did with Windows 10, the company is now looking to roll out new features more sporadically. We'll be getting a major Windows 11 update before the end of 2022, and then, as The Verge points out, Microsoft will then roll out new features whenever they are ready through 2023, rather than getting many features packaged together in one big update.

Microsoft has not publicly confirmed its Windows roadmap, but we should get some official Windows related news soon as the Windows 11 22H2 update gets closer.

Microsoft has made a number of key improvements to the Xbox app on PC recently. Not only has the app been upgraded to give users more freedom over their game installs and files, but soon the app will also let you know if your PC is up to the task of running any game in the library.

Microsoft is now rolling out an update for the Xbox App on Windows 10 and Windows 11. The new update adds a new  performance indicator to the UI while looking at available games. This short message will let you know if your PC is capable of handling a particular game, or if others with similar specs faced performance issues.

The new performance check won't appear on all titles right away, as Microsoft is still in the process of gathering performance data for games across the Game Pass library.

Microsoft has also made some other UI changes with this update, all in the aim of making the app easier to navigate and improve game discoverability. All key portions of the app now have a shortcut on the side bar, installations are easier to track and the Game Pass Search function has been improved with increased accuracy.

Microsoft has been moving away from Internet Explorer for years and while the browser is still available today, Edge has largely taken over. In June, IE will be going away for good, with an upcoming Windows update set to wipe it from PCs once it reaches end-of-life.

Microsoft announced plans to retire Internet Explorer in May last year and now, the company has also revealed that it has a plan to ensure Windows 10 users aren't still relying on it. In a monthly update after Internet Explorer reaches EoL status, Internet Explorer will be disabled on Windows 10 PCs and all users will be redirected to Edge when trying to access it.

Internet Explorer reaches end-of-life on the 15th of June 2022, so the IE-disabling Windows 10 update should start rolling out after that date, bringing an end to 25 years of service for the browser.

For anyone concerned about legacy web support, Microsoft Edge does have its own IE mode, which can be enabled to access IE-based websites and applications.

When Microsoft first announced the Xbox Series X/S consoles, DirectStorage technology was also announced, paving the way for speedier loading times and better game performance. Now roughly 18 months later, DirectStorage has officially come to PC following months of testing.

Microsoft announced that DirectStorage would come to PC last year – the feature won't be limited to Windows 11 either, as the API also works on Windows 10. As of today, the API is available to game developers, so we should see the first games supporting it on both console and PC later this year.

In most PC systems, when a game is loaded from the storage drive where it’s installed, the CPU and RAM are responsible for decompressing the data. Once it finishes, the data is sent to the GPU. With DirectStorage, things work differently. Instead, the system moves game data directly from the storage drive to the GPU, moving the decompression step from the CPU to the GPU.

Microsoft has yet to announce any PC games supporting DirectStorage, but we would anticipate some first-party titles will be updated with it. At the very least, we should see Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite get this update sometime this year. It should become more common for newly released titles from the second half of 2022 onwards.

In late 2021, Microsoft announced some major improvements coming to the Xbox Game Pass app on PC. The update will finally give users more control over their game installs and files, as well as increased mod support. Now after months of testing, this update is finally ready to roll out.

Today, alongside new Xbox Game Pass game announcements, Microsoft also revealed that the Game Pass app on PC will be getting its highly anticipated update today. Now, users of the app can expect more flexibility and control over their games and files, bringing it more in line with something like Steam, and continuing to do away with the awful UWP system that debuted on Windows 10.

With this update, PC gamers can install Game Pass titles to any folder on their PC, and you'll also be able to dig through the game files without being blocked off, opening the door for more modding opportunities for titles on Xbox Game Pass. This will even make it easier to use basic tools, like reshade, in addition to opening the door for more expansive mods for titles like Skyrim, Fallout and other supported games.

Additionally, if you need to move some games around to free up space on an SSD or HDD, you will also now have an easier time moving games between folders and drives. You should now be able to move entire installs without needing to redownload anything.

The Xbox Game Pass PC update is rolling out for Windows 10 and Windows 11 today.

Microsoft is making some changes to the setup process for Windows 11 Pro. In a widely criticised move, Microsoft will soon remove the ability to set up Windows 11 Pro offline and without a Microsoft account.

Microsoft already requires users to have an internet connection and a Microsoft account to sign into when setting up Windows 11 Home. However, many Pro users may need to set up a system offline due to various reasons, which is why this ability was in place. For whatever reason, Microsoft has now decided that an internet connection is absolutely mandatory during the Windows setup phase.

The change was revealed in the patch notes for the latest Windows 11 preview build. The relevant section reads:

“Similar to Windows 11 Home edition, Windows 11 Pro edition now requires internet connectivity during the initial device setup (OOBE) only. If you choose to setup device for personal use, MSA will be required for setup as well. You can expect Microsoft Account to be required in subsequent WIP flights.”

There are many Windows Pro users who do not use a Microsoft account at all, so this change will require a few extra steps for some. However, we would expect that users will also find various workarounds to avoid this.

Windows already plasters a watermark on your screen if you are running an unlicensed version of the OS, but soon, you may also get stuck with a watermark and multiple warnings for running Windows 11 on “unsupported” hardware.

According to The Verge, the latest Windows 11 builds will show a watermark on the bottom right corner of the desktop when the system requirements to run the OS are not met. In addition, you'll see a warning informing you of the same when opening  Windows 11 settings.

The watermark is similar to the message displayed when running Windows without a license. However, the “System requirements not met” message isn't transparent, making it more noticeable when you're on the desktop. On the other hand, it doesn't appear on top of other apps nor limits any OS features, at least for now.

For now, these warnings are only available in test builds, so you may never see them reach the public versions. Still, considering Microsoft's history with this type of message, we expect to see them in an upcoming Windows 11 version.

When Microsoft first announced Windows 11, one of the marquee features of the new OS was the ability to install and run Android apps without the need for an emulator like Blue Stacks. The feature wasn't ready in time for launch back in October, but Windows Insiders can now finally test it out.

In a new blog post, Windows Chief Product Officer, Panos Panay, explained that starting in February, Android apps on Windows 11 will be entering preview through the Windows Insider program. Supported apps will be made available through the Microsoft Store via partnerships with the likes of Amazon and Intel.

In theory, once you've found an Android app, you should be able to download and install it and open it up like any other piece of software on the Microsoft Store. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Google will be supporting Microsoft's efforts or integrating the Play Store with the Microsoft Store anytime soon.

With Microsoft's Android support coming up, Google is looking to provide some competition itself, with plans to introduce its own PC app that will allow you to run Android games from the Play Store.

Windows 11 is already out, but Microsoft hasn't abandoned its predecessor yet. For the foreseeable future, Windows 10 will still be supported, but feature updates will be slowing down a bit, moving over to an annual release model.

Since Windows 10 launched, Microsoft has been updating the operating system with new features each semester. However, like Windows 11, its predecessor will now start to be updated annually. This schedule change postponed the feature update planned for the first half of 2022 to the second half of next year.

Alongside this announcement, Microsoft also said that the November 2021 update for Windows 10 is now available for download. Windows 10 Home and Pro editions will receive 18 months of servicing and support, while Enterprise and Education editions will receive 30 months. Moreover, the company added it will support at least one Windows 10 version until October 14th, 2025.

Now that Windows 10 feature update cadence is annual, we expect the operating system's stability will increase. Besides giving more time to squash bugs and test features, yearly updates will also be a blessing for companies and businesses, as they won't have to update their systems as often.

Windows 11 has been out for a little over a month now and Microsoft now has a few updates under its belt. Unfortunately, an expiring certificate has come in to play, causing dome Windows 11 features to stop working correctly.

As Microsoft warned, starting on the 1st of November, a digital certificate expired, which is causing issues with certain built-in Windows apps and features, including:

  • Snipping Tool
  • Accounts page and landing page in the Settings app (S mode only)
  • Start menu (S mode only)
  • Touch Keyboard, Voice Typing, and Emoji Panel
  • Input Method Editor user interface (IME UI)
  • Getting started and Tips

The certificate expired on the 31st of October, but there is a partial resolution available. which will fix touch keyboard, voice typing, the emoji panel, the IME UI and the ‘Getting started' page. These fixes have already been rolled out as part of this week's KB5006746 update. Those missing the snipping tool will have to use print screen for the time being and paste the screenshot into an app like paint to be cropped.

The next step for Microsoft is fixing the remaining issues, which will come in a patch later this month.

Last week following the launch of Windows 11, AMD warned that Ryzen systems are experiencing performance issues with the new operating system, which can reduce gaming performance by up to 15 percent. As it seems, there are some other issues present that we didn't know about last week, but Microsoft is working on a fix.

AMD and Microsoft identified and publicised the issue with Windows 11 and Ryzen processors last week around launch, noting that a bug is causing high L3 cache latency, thus reducing performance. This week, the first Windows 11 update began rolling out and according to some users, it has made the latency worse and it has also stopped the UEFI-CPPC2 (preferred cores mechanism) from working.

In its own tests, TechPowerUp found that the Ryzen 7 2700X, which typically has an L3 cache latency of 10ns, has risen to 31.9ns following the latest update. Before the new Windows 11 patch, latency was sitting around 17ns.

AMD has responded to this news already, stating that a patch for the preferred cores bug will be coming on the 21st of October, and Microsoft will be fixing the L3 cache latency bug through a Windows Update on the 19th of October.

KitGuru Says: If you're using a Ryzen powered system, perhaps wait a couple of weeks before making the jump to Windows 11 to avoid performance issues. The fixes for these bugs are just around the corner.

Windows 11 was released a few days ago and is already being associated with performance issues in certain hardware configurations. AMD confirmed this week that there are some performance issues when running Windows 11 on Ryzen-based systems, which can see performance in some games drop by up to 15 percent.

The first reported issue affects applications sensitive to memory subsystem access time. As it seems, when running Windows 11 in a system equipped with a Ryzen CPU, the L3 cache latency increases by up to 3x, decreasing performance by up to 5% overall and up to 15% in some games.

Moreover, AMD also stated that, when using Windows 11, UEFI CPPC2, also known as “preferred core”, may not preferentially schedule threads on the CPU's fastest core. This bug results in performance loss in applications using “one or a few CPU threads”, and it's more prone to be detected in  >8-core processors with a TDP above 65W.

The issues reported by AMD are affecting over 100x AMD processors, including the Ryzen EPYC and Athlon series, but Microsoft is already working on fixes. The Windows update with the fixes is expected to release during this month. We have not seen similar reports of performance issues with Intel CPUs at the time of publishing.

KitGuru says: This seems like something that should have been spotted before launch but alas, here we are. Hopefully Microsoft's performance fixing patch isn't too far off.

When Microsoft first unveiled Windows 11, it announced plans to revamp the Windows Store and open it up for third-party integrations. We already knew that the Samsung Android app store would be implemented, but now, others are coming forward, including the likes of Epic Games.

Not only will the Windows 11 version of the store offer Android apps through Amazon app store integration, but Epic Games CEO, Tim Sweeney, revealed this week that the company plans to integrate the Epic Games Store with Microsoft's app. Microsoft also confirmed this in a blog post this week, while also announcing that it is open to other storefronts as well.

“Today, we are sharing that Amazon and Epic Games will bring their storefront apps to the Microsoft Store over the next few months, and we look forward to welcoming other stores as well in the future”, Microsoft's Girogio Sardo wrote.

Aside from Amazon and Epic Games, other apps like Discord, Zoom, Adobe, TeamViewer and more are also on board. This new wave of support for the Microsoft Store follows on from a slew of policy changes. Not only is the new Windows Store a more open platform, allowing developers to offer their apps without any UWP requirements, but they can also utilise their own content distribution networks. Beyond that, Microsoft has dropped its revenue cut for all apps and third-party stores, although games offered directly through the Windows Store will still be subject to a revenue split.

KitGuru Says: Microsoft seems to be attracting a lot of interest with Windows 11 and the various changes to the store. Of course, this will take time to integrate, so don't expect all of this at launch, but in a few months time, everything should start being put in place.

As Microsoft gets ready to officially launch Windows 11 in just a couple of weeks, the PC Health Check app has been improved to give you more details on why your PC may not be compatible with Windows 11.

The app's first version was released in June, but back then, it didn't specify why a system wasn't compatible with the upcoming OS. Instead, users were met with a vague message stating that the PC is not compatible with Windows 11, leaving potential upgraders with a frustrating lack of information on what they need to do in order to meet Microsoft's requirements. In many cases, PCs were ruled out due to not having TPM 2.0 enabled, which can be done through a hardware chip, or via software within a motherboard BIOS.

Fortunately, Microsoft decided to update the app to be more precise on why a system isn't capable of running Windows 11. When you choose to check if your system is compatible with Windows 11, the app gives you a checklist of all the requirements and shows if your system meets them or not.

For example, if your system doesn't have TPM 2.0 enabled or doesn't support the technology, the new PC Health Check app redirects you to a web page so you can learn how to turn it on. The same happens for any requirement your system doesn't meet, directing users to the information they need in order to make the jump to Windows 11.

Windows 11 is the next major system update for the PC platform, bringing with it many new features – and inevitably many new bugs and issues. In preparation for this major update in October, Nvidia has now released a new 472.12 Game Reader Driver for Windows 11, helping to provide a smooth experience for many new and upcoming games.

Announced today by Nvidia, those with the company’s GPUs (and the Geforce Experience application) should soon see a new 472.12 driver update. This update is said to be in preparation for Windows 11, which after a beta period will finally be released fully on the 5th of October.

This update also brings with it support for a number of games, namely:

  1. Alan Wake Remastered
  2. Deathloop
  3. Diablo II: Resurrected
  4. Far Cry 6
  5. Hot Wheels Unleashed
  6. Industria
  7. New World
  8. World War Z: Aftermath

The update also adds new games to the more than 1000 taking advantage of GeForce Experience’s one-click optimal settings, which “enable you to instantly configure game options for your system’s hardware, giving you smooth, optimized gameplay”. DLAA is also now officially supported by this drive as well, providing a new anti-aliasing option in the Elder Scrolls Online test server.

Driver updates are vital for the smooth running of games on PCs and so it is good to see Nvidia getting ahead of the curve with this latest update.

AMD has several new features in store for Radeon graphics users with its latest driver update. Today, Radeon Software Adrenalin 21.9.1 launches, bringing auto-overclocking, Windows 11 support, Smart Access Memory on RX 5000 GPUs and the reveal of even more games using FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR).

The first major feature addition with this driver is Auto Overclocking for AMD-powered desktop PCs. Now, those with an RX 6000 series graphics card and a Ryzen 5000 series processor can switch auto-overclocking on to boost both the CPU and GPU without additional tinkering. This is also the first Radeon Software version to include support for all features on Windows 11. Microsoft's latest OS officially launches in October and will be a free upgrade to all Windows 10 owners.

The other highlight for this new driver is expanded Smart Access Memory (SAM) support. Previously, SAM worked with Ryzen 5000 or Ryzen 3000 series CPUs and RX 6000 series graphics cards, but now, it works with RX 5000 series GPUs as well. All of that brings us to the latest updates on FSR, AMD's DLSS alternative for resolution upscaling.

So far this year, FSR has been implemented in 27 titles, including the likes of Marvel's Avengers, Dota 2, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey, Myst and Resident Evil Village. This week, Bethesda and Arkane's latest title, Deathloop, will also launch with FSR and the feature will also be coming to World War Z: Aftermath, JX3, F1 2021 and No Man's Sky in the coming weeks.

You can download the latest Radeon Software Adrenalin driver, HERE. Discuss on our Facebook page, HERE.

KitGuru Says: If you're running an AMD graphics card, then be sure to download this month's major driver update and let us know how you get on.
