In accordance with the plan, Microsoft Corp. and its partners will halt production of personal computers based on Windows 7 operating system for consumers this Friday, on the 31st of October. All consumers will have to buy PC s with Windows 8.1 OS after sales of the previous-generation operating system for general customers end.

Makers of personal computers will have no right to build and sell systems featuring Windows 7 Home Basic, Home Premium or Ultimate operating system starting the 1st of November, 2014. They will be able to continue selling PCs based on Windows 7 Professional to either businesses or consumers who are willing to pay extra for the professional features. In addition, retailers will continue to sell already assembled machines with previous-gen OS.

While the majority of personal computers for consumers are shipped with Windows 8.1 operating systems, many of those who are used to classic Windows still prefer Windows 7. As a result, Microsoft will hardly cease to sell Windows 7 Professional before Windows 10 hits the market in 2015 in order not to frustrate its loyal customers. Still, since, Windows 7 Pro costs more than Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 for consumers, many users will be unhappy.

It should be kept in mind that on the 13th of January, 2015, Microsoft will move all versions of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 into extended support, which means no new features, no performance enhancements and no design changes will be coming to these operating systems. The company will provide extended support for the Windows 7 and the Windows Server 2008 operating systems till early 2020.

KitGuru Says: If you were going to buy a consumer PC with an inexpensive version of Windows 7, you will probably have to hurry now because existing supplies may not last forever. Certain boutique PC makers have already ceased to sell systems with consumer versions of Windows 7.

Microsoft have announced that over 240 million copies of Windows 7 have been sold since releasing the operating system over a year ago. This is now officially the fastest selling OS in their history.

Vista was never warmly received, although at KitGuru we think some of the uneducated press damaged the platform beyond repair when it was in fact, a pretty good platform. Windows 7 has healed Microsoft's standing with their customer base as people adopt the OS faster than anything else before it. Windows 7 actually accounts now for 17.1% of the global OS market, which is a staggering percentage.

Since Windows 7 was released the Microsoft Customer Satisfaction Index has increased from 70 to 76, while other software makers as a group scored 77.

How can we forget this video of Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer ?

Windows 7 and Office suits drove a 48 percent increase in profits year over year and a 22% jump in revenue. The next market Microsoft need to drive is the mobile sector, which is proving rather difficult.

KitGuru says: Windows 7 is a great operating system, but Vista was unfairly treated.

It seems like Microsoft can finally put the ‘Vista disaster' to bed as reports have came in that they have sold over 150 million copies of Windows 7. This means it is the fastest selling operating system in computer history.

When this is translated it means that seven copies of Windows 7 have been sold every second since release and it is even starting to get adoption among business users. This user base are normally very slow to even consider a new operating system.

This goes some way to repair the damage that Vista caused to the company, it was never really accepted by the masses and sales figures were very poor throughout its history. I am one of the few journalists who actually rated Vista as a solid operating system and I felt that although it did need some ‘tweaking' out of the box it delivered a great experience on a good cross section of modern hardware.

Microsoft released beta versions yesterday of Messenger, Movie Maker, Sync and Photo Gallery yesterday to help strengthen the Windows Live series of free applications.

KitGuru says: Strong sales figures have helped Microsoft continue to grow in 2010.
