Early last year, Microsoft announced Project Astoria, a tool designed to allow developers to easily port their Android apps over to Windows 10, a similar tool known as Project Islandwood was also announced for porting iOS apps to Windows 10. Now almost a year later, Microsoft has announced that it will not be going forward with Project Astoria.

This decision follows on from Microsoft's acquisition of Zamarin, a development platform that is designed to work across iOS, Windows and Android.

Windows-10

Writing in a blog post on the matter, Microsoft said: “We received a lot of feedback that having two Bridge technologies to bring code from mobile operating systems to Windows was unnecessary, and the choice between them could be confusing. We have carefully considered this feedback and decided that we would focus our efforts on the Windows Bridge for iOS and make it the single Bridge option for bringing mobile code to all Windows 10 devices, including Xbox and PCs. For those developers who spent time investigating the Android Bridge, we strongly encourage you to take a look at the iOS Bridge and Xamarin as great solutions.”

So now rather than porting older apps across, Microsoft is hoping that Xamarin will catch on and allow developers to easily create cross-platform applications, which will have a positive effect on the Windows app store.

KitGuru Says: Windows on mobile has always had a bit of an issue with developer support but Microsoft has been working to fix that over the years. Do any of you own a Windows Phone? Is it running Windows 10 yet?

Windows 10 for desktop systems is now out in the wild but at the moment, we still don't have the mobile version, though some devices are capable of preview testing it. While a release date for the mobile version of Windows 10 has yet to be announced, we do know which Lumia smartphones will be getting the update first.

Microsoft has gone ahead and posted an initial list of Lumia handsets that will get the upgrade later on this year, including the Lumia 930, 830 and the Lumia 640/640 XL. There are a total of ten smartphones on the list so far.

Windows-10-Mobile

Microsoft's list of Lumia devices includes:

  • Lumia 430
  • Lumia 435
  • Lumia 532
  • Lumia 535
  • Lumia 540
  • Lumia 640
  • Lumia 640 XL
  • Lumia 735
  • Lumia 830
  • Lumia 930.

All devices on the list will have to be fully up to date before the Windows 10 update can be downloaded and installed, though since we don't have a release date yet, we can assume that there is plenty of time between now and release. This list of supported phones is also expected to grow over time.

We do know that Microsoft is currently preparing a new high-end phone to launch alongside the Windows 10 update later this year. Recent leaks pointed towards some pretty beefy specifications for the upcoming smartphone, though we do not know when it is due to be officially announced.

KitGuru Says: Windows mobile users may not be in as much of a rush to get the Windows 10 update as desktop users were but the update should provide a better Windows-centric eco-system across multiple devices. Are any of you running a Windows Phone?

The Xbox One is due to get its most significant software update yet when Windows 10 launches. However, it looks like console owners will have to wait a bit longer than PC users as Microsoft has said that the new OS update won't hit the Xbox One until after the Summer.

The Xbox isn't the only platform having to wait for the Windows 10 update, earlier this month Microsoft also revealed that Windows 10 mobile wouldn't be arriving until after the official launch on PC. The new release window for Xbox was revealed on Twitter by Phil Spencer, Microsoft's head of gaming.

Windows-10

Microsoft initially announced that Windows 10 would be integrated in to the Xbox One back in January, although it had been suspected for a while before that. Aside from that, not much is known about the switch to Windows 10 for Xbox One. It may or may not come with a dashboard change.

The big thing to take away from it is that Windows app developers will easily be able to bring their apps to mobile, Xbox and PC thanks to the new universal apps scheme.

KitGuru Says: It seems that mobile and Xbox development of Windows 10 has taken a back seat so that Microsoft can better focus on desktop users, which is something many PC owners will be happy about. Are any of you planning on switching to Windows 10 this year?

LG has been avoiding the Windows Phone market for a while now but it looks like the hiatus is coming to an end as the company is set to launch its first Windows smartphone in five years. It's called the LG Lancet, featuring fairly low specifications.

The phone will be launching on Verizon in the US. The device will launch with Windows 8.1 installed, which will upgrade to Windows 10 when that comes out later this year. Under the hood, the LG Lancet sports a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor. On the rear you will find an 8 megapixel camera with a VGA variant on the front.

hyqydin_1024-x-640_678x452

The Lancet feature's a 4.5 inch display, a micro SD card slot and a 2100 mAh battery. Being that it's a low-budget Windows Phone, it likely isn't going to ‘wow' the masses but it may end up being a fairly good option for some people.

With LG now supporting Windows Phone again, it will be interesting to see if the company has any plans for a higher end device when Windows 10 mobile launches. Although traditionally, high-end Windows Phone devices have not sold that well.

Today Microsoft officially revealed all of the different editions of Windows 10. This is common practice for Microsoft, the company has regularly launched ‘Home', ‘Pro' and ‘Enterprise' editions of its operating systems for years and Windows 10 won't be breaking tradition.

Windows 10 Home is Microsoft's “consumer-focused” edition of the OS, which will ship on most pre-built PCs and laptops. It will include all of the main features of Windows 10 but there will also be a Windows 10 Pro edition, as you would expect. The pro edition will include the ability for businesses to connect domains to take advantage of some business features.

Windows-10

Microsoft is renaming Windows Phone to Windows Mobile, although all Microsoft smartphones will technically be running Windows 10. Windows Mobile will take advantage of touch oriented apps and a touch oriented user interface. There will also be an Enterprise edition of Windows Mobile, which is designed for large businesses with lots of devices.

Aside from the several main editions of the operating system, there will be Windows 10 Education, Windows 10 IoT Core and Windows 10 Enterprise. In total, there will be seven editions of Microsoft's latest operating system, which still doesn't have a release date.

KitGuru Says: All of the different editions of Windows will return with Windows 10. Aside from the changes to Windows Mobile, Windows Education and IoT Core, not much is different. Are any of you planning on upgrading to Windows 10 this Summer? Which version of Windows are you running currently?

All good (and bad) things eventually have to meet their fate and today some Windows Mobile and Phone marketplaces meet theirs. Those running on the ancient Windows Mobile platform will no longer have access to the official Marketplace starting from today. If you do happen to have a unmodified HTC HD2 laying around now would be the time to update applications – if it isn't too late already.

Of course, those applications which are already downloaded will be unaffected once the Marketplace shutdown has taken effect. Also, third party application stores will continue to work as normal. The shutdown comes about even though some analysts believe Windows Mobile outsold the more modern Windows Phone 7 platform for much of 2011.

Microsoft is shutting down the Marketplace for a couple of older mobile operating systems today

That' not everything though, Windows Phone 7.5 is now required to access the Windows Phone marketplace. The 7.5 “Mango” update was released late last year and due to manufacturers and carriers getting their software updates sorted for once, all Windows Phone smartphones should already be on the Mango update. If not, you will start to see error messages when trying to access the Marketplace. If you're not sure what version you are running on your Windows Phone device refer to the FAQs.

KitGuru says: Dropping support for old (yet near extinct) code and focussing on upcoming updates, well done Microsoft. We wish Google and its Android supporters picked up on your mentalities.

Microsoft has recently sent out emails to Windows Mobile 6.x users stating that the marketplace will soon be shutting down in early May. Windows Mobile 6.x is not to be mistaken with Microsoft's current Windows Phone 7 platform.

HTC's HD2 smartphone, one of the few phones capable of escaping the Marketplace shutdown. It can also run Android and Windows Phone 7.

Starting from the 9th of May users rocking Microsoft's old mobile operating system will no longer be able to download, purchase or even browse applications. Current users are warned to update any applications now as the marketplace shutdown will mean that existing applications will not be able to be updated.

While the official Windows Mobile Marketplace may be shutting down it does not limit you from installing applications from third-party application stores.

Kitguru says: It would be in your best interests to purchase a new phone; regardless of the Windows Mobile Marketplace shutting down.

Microsoft have re-released the update for Windows Phone 7, after an initial problem which caused some phones to brick.

The update has fixed a plethora of back end issues and was originally released last month. It all seemed to be fine until reports started filtering in that Samsung phones were ‘bricking'. For those of you who don't know what ‘bricking' means, it is when a phone gets an update which fails and causes the phone to stop working correctly, or at all.

Microsoft have said in their blog posting that the errors have been fixed and it is safe for everyone to download the new update. If you previously received the update and it went fine, then there is no need to get this patched version, it won't fix anything new.

The company has been rather embarassed by this latest faux pas, especially as they are trying to expand their user base by offering software which appeals to the widest possible audience. To be fair, every phone manufacturer has experienced issues on some levels in the past, but Microsoft are constantly under the spotlight.

The next update for Windows Phone users increases overall phone performance and responsiveness and yes, it will add the much missed ‘copy and pasting' of text. We aren't quite sure why that was ever left out in the first place.

KitGuru says: Microsoft will be doubling their efforts this year for the smoothest possible updates.

Microsoft have been pumping a lot of money into Windows Phone 7, but unfortunately it hasn't yet proved to be the resounding success they needed. While 1.5 million phones have been shipped during the first six weeks this isn't reflective of actual sales.

Microsoft have been stating that 1.5 million phones have been shipped since the new operating system launched, and according to sources, the consumer sales figures aren't anywhere near as impressive.

Google Android, is the hot news right now with over 300,000 phones being activated each day. In five straight days, sales alone on Google Android phones are matching what Microsoft have shipped to stores in 6 weeks. Getting this into perspective shows that Windows Phone 7 has been another mobile flop for Microsoft.

There are several major reasons to explain poor consumer adoption rates. Firstly, Windows Mobile was not a success story on any level, the operating system never took off with customers and Microsoft lost a lot of public faith in their mobile products. Windows Phone 7 had a hard claw up the hill, before it was even released.

Windows Phone 7 has also received a lot of criticism from press, with missing features, such as even a basic copy and paste. The operating system just hasn't proved to offer anything that iOS or Android aren't already offering, in a nicer, cheaper package.

It is still too early to say, but we feel that Microsoft are already fighting a losing battle. We will have more detailed information in the next couple of months, but this might be another disaster for the company, who are very keen to make an impact into the mobile sector.

KitGuru says: They have a tough battle ahead of them, but early adoption shows customer faith in the new OS is not good.
