Windows 11 is already out, but Microsoft hasn't abandoned its predecessor yet. For the foreseeable future, Windows 10 will still be supported, but feature updates will be slowing down a bit, moving over to an annual release model.

Since Windows 10 launched, Microsoft has been updating the operating system with new features each semester. However, like Windows 11, its predecessor will now start to be updated annually. This schedule change postponed the feature update planned for the first half of 2022 to the second half of next year.

Alongside this announcement, Microsoft also said that the November 2021 update for Windows 10 is now available for download. Windows 10 Home and Pro editions will receive 18 months of servicing and support, while Enterprise and Education editions will receive 30 months. Moreover, the company added it will support at least one Windows 10 version until October 14th, 2025.

Now that Windows 10 feature update cadence is annual, we expect the operating system's stability will increase. Besides giving more time to squash bugs and test features, yearly updates will also be a blessing for companies and businesses, as they won't have to update their systems as often.

The post Early adopters for RTX laptops will want to double check their version Windows first appeared on KitGuru.]]>
At CES in January, Nvidia proudly proclaimed that over 40 different laptops would be hitting the market this year sporting RTX graphics chips. The first wave of RTX laptops began hitting retailers earlier this week, but early adopters may want to double check which version of Windows their laptop arrives with- particularly if they want to use ray-tracing.

We have heard from one gaming laptop manufacturer that some early RTX laptops are shipping with Windows version 1803. This version of Windows does not contain support for DXR, the DirectX API that allows for real-time ray-tracing. This is the marquee feature for those opting to pick up an RTX-powered system.

Microsoft had a ton of issues getting Windows 1809 up and running at an acceptable level. If you are buying one of the first RTX laptops, you'll want to go into your Windows settings, scroll down to ‘about' and double check if you have Windows 1803 or Windows 1809 installed.

If you have 1809 already installed, then you are good to go and will be able to activate ray-tracing in Battlefield V (and other upcoming games). If you have Windows 10 1803, and Microsoft's automatic Windows updater isn't upgrading you to the new version, you will want to download the update manually HERE.

KitGuru Says: This isn't the end of the world, as upgrading to Windows 1809 is a fairly simple and easy process. If you are splashing the cash on an RTX laptop with the intention of using ray-tracing, then just take the time to double check you are on the most recent version of Windows 10.  Of course, we expect this sort of issue to be ironed out over time and we don't expect that it will affect all laptop manufacturers.

While Windows 10 is picking up steam and Microsoft is leaving its older operating systems in the dust, Windows 7 still remains rather popular among users. Unfortunately, users of the older OS have recently reported a problem with Windows Update.

According to Betanews, users are unable to update their machines, consistently getting an “80248015” error with a message that reads: “Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer.”

This is apparently caused by a file that has corrupted due to the wrong expiry date having initially been set. The file in question is found in c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\AuthCabszauthcab.cab and is called ‘authorization.xml’.

More often than not, a simple reboot re-verifies everything and acts as a fix, but unfortunately, those currently suffering don’t have it so easy. Günter Born has a temporary solution, however, stating that all users need to do is go into the settings for Windows Update and select “Give me updates for Microsoft products and check for new optional Microsoft software when I update Windows.”

“After reading his mail, I decided to do a short check on my Windows 7 production machine. I received the following error message after a few seconds,” wrote Born. “Error 0x80248015 has been dropped, and I see the information, that the last update search was on December 3, 2017 01:53. The update history showed me, that a definition update KB2310138 for Microsoft Security Essentials has been installed as a last update.”

This seems to have numbed the pain for most people wanting to keep their machine up to date, which we strongly advise you to do for security reasons, however Microsoft has yet to officially address the problem.

KitGuru Says: Often, temporary fixes have a nasty habit of being just as painful as the problem it aims to fix, so it’s nice to see this current workaround avoid being problematic itself. Still, hopefully Microsoft jumps on the issue soon, as there are still many Windows 7 users out there. What version of Windows are you currently running?

It seems that Microsoft is due to get more aggressive with its Windows 10 upgrades. While the new OS is already installed on 110 million devices, Microsoft is going to start presenting Windows 10 to users as a ‘recommended upgrade' update starting early next year. This means that the Windows 10 download will start automatically on PCs and upon download, users will be presented with the option to go through with the install.

According to Terry Myserson, speaking with The Verge, “A user will be presented with a choice to install Windows 10. hey’ll come back to their PC and there will be a dialog where they can choose to upgrade to Windows 10 or choose not to upgrade to Windows 10.”

Windows-10

Microsoft doesn't want to trick users in to installing Windows 10, so while the OS will automatically download the update, users should have the option whether to install it or not on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. Microsoft is also making changes to the way pirated versions of Windows update to the latest OS.

According to The Verge's interview, Microsoft is already winning over pirates. Apparently, when a non-genuine Windows user attempts to upgrade to Windows 10, a message pops up saying that only genuine copies can update. According to Terry Myserson, plenty of pirates have gone ahead and bought a genuine license upon seeing this message. This all seems to be a part of Microsoft's effort to get one billion devices running Windows 10 within the next couple of years.

KitGuru Says: Some users have already found the Windows 10 update downloaded on to their system, so this move isn't too surprising from Microsoft. How many of you have upgraded to Windows 10 already? Have you had any problems so far?

Last week, Samsung ran in to quite the PR nightmare when it was discovered that the company's own SW Update tool contained a little program titled ‘Disable_WindowsUpdate.exe', which did exactly what the name suggests. Samsung laptop owners weren't happy and neither was Microsoft.

Microsoft was swift to point out that disabling the Windows Update tool can put users' machines at risk. We also learned that Samsung was likely disabling Windows Update due to compatibility issues with the hardware used in its laptops as Windows would overwrite the drivers for things like USB 3.0 ports, which would then cause them to stop working.

While at the time Samsung attempted to say that it wasn't disabling Windows Update but merely ‘giving consumers a choice' when it came to using Microsoft's standard update tool, the company has now come around and is saying that it will remove the Disable_WindowsUpdate.exe file in an upcoming patch for SW Update.

In a statement sent to VentureBeat, the company said: “We will be issuing a patch through the Samsung Software Update notification process to revert back to the recommended automatic Windows Update settings within a few days”.

KitGuru Says: Samsung was certainly playing a dodgy game by disabling Windows Update by default on its laptops, which comes with a range of security risks. However, it looks like the issue is set to be fixed this week, which is good news for any Samsung laptop owners.

It looks like Samsung has been messing around with the Windows Update feature on its own laptops, which is causing quite a stir this week. According to Microsoft's Patrick Barker, Samsung has a program titled ‘Disable_Windowsupdate.exe' as part of its own Samsung branded computer update tool called SW Update.

It turns out that Samsung was preventing the Windows Update from automatically running in the background on its laptops in order to push users in to using the SW Update tool or finding Microsoft's latest updates manually. As you would expect, Microsoft itself isn't too happy about the discovery as it can pose a security risk to leave Windows Update off entirely. For a lot of users, this may have meant that some of them were missing important fixes for Windows, especially those without a ton of technical knowledge.

R730_red_03_700_1

In a statement sent to VentureBeat, a Microsoft Spokesperson said: “Windows Update remains a critical component of our security commitment to our customers. We do not recommend disabling or modifying Windows Update in any way as this could expose a customer to increased security risks. We are in contact with Samsung to address this issue.”

Now according to Patrick Barker, who did some digging around, this all comes down to the fact that Windows Update installs default drivers for hardware on the laptop and Samsung's particular hardware may not be compatible with these updates. So to stop Samsung's own software from being overwritten by Windows, it disabled the update feature.

In a statement sent out to multiple publications, including The Inquirer, Samsung officially responded to these allegations, saying: “It is not true that we are blocking a Windows 8.1 operating system update on our computers. As part of our commitment to consumer satisfaction, we are providing our users with the option to choose if and when they want to update the Windows software on their products.”

KitGuru Says: Samsung is clearly playing some shady games with the Windows Update tool. The simple solution would just be to use hardware compatible with Windows but it seems Samsung would rather go down this route. I would recommend reading the full report from Patrick Barker as there is some pretty shady stuff in there and lots of technical expertise. Do any of you own a Samsung laptop? Have you had any issues with Windows Update?
