Nowadays most news relating to the once so popular Windows XP refers to how different companies and services are droping their support for the operating system – including Firefox, Steam and Blizzard, just to mention a few. However, there is some good news for those who miss the old OS – PI LAB has just released a Linux-based “Windows XP”.

The Linux based RapbianXP is created to resemble Windows XP and to run on a Raspberry Pi 4 as previous versions of the single board computer aren't powerful enough. RasbianXP is – as the name would suggest – based on Raspbian and uses an overlay and icons that make it look like Windows XP. However, it's worth mentioning that although the operating system might look like Windows XP it still needs an emulator to run proper Windows software from the XP era.

The operating system created by PI LAB is still a work in progress, so new features are to be expected in the future. It still remains to be seen how far the creator – and potentially others – are willing to go to recreate an even more similar looking version of the once so popular Windows XP

Raspbian 95 can be downloaded HERE. RapbianXP can be downloaded HERE.

Back in June 2018, we learned that Valve would no longer be supporting Steam on Windows XP and Vista starting in January 2019. We have now reached that fateful day, as of now, Steam will no longer support Microsoft's legacy operating systems.

Despite being long outdated, a surprising number of people still use Windows XP and Windows Vista today. According to netmarketshare, at the end of 2018, 4.54 percent of desktop PCs were still running Windows XP, meanwhile 0.2 percent were still on Vista. The majority of these systems are likely in various businesses, rather than in homes, but on the off chance that you still used XP or Vista on a gaming PC, now would be the time to finally make the jump to something more up to date.

Despite increased competition in 2018, Steam is still the biggest marketplace for PC gaming. By dropping support for XP and Vista, Valve won't have to compromise on future feature updates for the sake of the few still using old operating systems. With that said, Windows 7 and 8.1 will continue to be supported for the time being.

We've known for some time that Valve has been working on a major UI overhaul for Steam. Last year's Steam Chat update was just the beginning, so hopefully we shall see more improvements this year now that legacy OS support has been given the boot.

KitGuru Says: Valve isn't the first company to drop support for XP and Vista. Blizzard's Battle.net launcher, League of Legends and most newer games no longer support the software. Do any of you still use XP or know someone who does? Will you be making the jump to something newer now?

Software support for Windows XP and Vista has been dwindling in recent years, with Microsoft dropping security updates in 2014 and 2017 respectively. Now, Riot has announced that League of Legends will no longer support the two aging operating systems come May 14, 2019.

The decision follows Valve’s decision to drop Windows XP and Vista support on January 1, 2019, while the majority of other companies including Blizzard and Mozilla axed updates for the OS last year.

Riot explains that Patch 9.9 will be the last update to offer official XP and Vista support, releasing on April 30, 2019 should all go according to plan. Users still utilising older systems will then have until May 14, 2019 to upgrade to Windows 7, 8.1 or 10, otherwise they will be unable to search for a match.

Around 1 percent of players will be affected by the change, according to Riot’s data, resulting in a “disproportionate investment from our engineering teams.” Alongside the announcement, Riot is committed to ensuring players on XP and Vista know of the impending end of support, stating that a pop-up within the client will want people once again a few weeks prior to Patch 9.10.

KitGuru Says: As sad as this will be for those devoted to the legacy operating systems, Riot has provided ample time for an upgrade – longer than most developers, in fact. At this point, it makes perfect sense to drop support for Windows XP and Vista, continuing to look ahead at the remaining three options from Microsoft.

Despite being long outdated, a surprising number of people still use Windows XP or Windows Vista today. For PC gamers, this will soon no longer be a viable option. We've already seen Blizzard drop support for Microsoft's legacy operating systems, and soon, Steam will be doing the same thing.

Lots of people love Windows XP and see it as one of Microsoft’s best operating systems ever. Windows Vista… Not so much. Users of either legacy operating system will no longer be able to use Steam as Valve is dropping support at the start of next year.

Valve made this announcement in a Steam Support page update late last week. Valve says that the newest features in Steam use an embedded version of Google Chrome, which also no longer works on Windows XP or Vista. Valve doesn't want to hold back Steam improvements in order to support legacy operating systems, so official Steam support for XP and Vista will be coming to an end.

Those still using Windows XP or Vista will continue to be able to use Steam for the rest of the year, but any new features (like the new Steam Chat beta) won't be available. From the 1st of January 2019, Steam will become unusable on these operating systems.

Of course, the recommendation to get around this is to upgrade to Windows 10.

KitGuru Says: It’s surprising that support lasted as long as it did. Perhaps the only effect this will have is older games not working so well on newer operating systems. Do you think Valve is right to end support for Windows XP and Vista?

The tech world is constantly evolving, which means that eventually, older devices and operating systems will begin losing support in one form or another. Apple users are being reminded of this today, as it has been announced that the company is cutting off iTunes support for the first-generation Apple TV as well as Windows XP and Windows Vista PCs.

The first-generation Apple TV had a good run, the old white and silver streaming box originally released in 2007 and now just over ten years later, Apple has officially labelled it as an obsolete product. It will no longer be getting software updates and it will no longer have access to the iTunes store.

Those who still use Windows XP or Windows Vista will be facing a similar fate. Previous versions of iTunes will still be accessible on these operating systems, but purchases and downloads will no longer be available. Going forward, iTunes will only officially support Windows 7 and later.

KitGuru Says: This isn't entirely unexpected news, as it happens to all older devices or older versions of software eventually. Still, it's useful information for the few that may still rely on older versions of Windows, or even the original Apple TV.

Mozilla is the latest in line to drop support for Windows XP and Vista, announcing that it will no longer update its Firefox browser for the operating systems from June 2018. This news comes after other companies have chosen to do the same thing.

Many companies are dropping support for Windows XP and Vista as of late, with Blizzard moving on from the aging OSs to look towards the future following Microsoft’s departure from mainstream support for these versions of Windows in 2009 and 2012 respectively. Windows XP entered a full state of ‘end of life’ (EOL) after its extended support release (ESR) expired in 2014 as did Vista’s back in April.

It makes sense given that both operating systems, along with Windows 8.1 dropped in popularity this year, with Windows 7 and 10 increasing in user base.

Mozilla brought its XP and Vista users into a state of ESR, stating that the recent extra time given to the ESR would be its last extension before its end of life.

“As one of the few browsers that continues to support Windows XP and Vista, Firefox users on these platforms can expect security updates until [June 2018],” confirms the company. “Users do not need to take additional action to receive those updates. Unsupported operating systems receive no security updates, have known exploits, and are dangerous for you to use.”

Choosing to not update your operating system and continuing to use unsupported browsers is always a huge security risk, so it’s recommended that users utilise this 9-month warning to prepare themselves for the forthcoming.

KitGuru Says: Other browsers stopped supporting the operating systems quite a while back so users were lucky enough to get Firefox as long as they did. Hopefully this will prompt companies to make much needed investments as businesses tend to be the main culprits of not upgrading.

Earlier this year, in the midst of the ‘WannaCry' malware panic, Microsoft went back and updated Windows XP, despite the OS being well past its end of life date. Now, Microsoft is following that up with a second patch to Windows XP in an effort to counter future WannaCry style malware attacks.

The WannaCry attack was a bit of a panic moment for governments, tech companies and businesses alike, with tens of thousands of PCs worldwide affected. It caused some major issues for the UK's NHS in particular. In an effort to prevent a similar situation from creeping up again, Microsoft has issued a new emergency update for versions of Windows all the way back to XP.

Writing on its Patch Tuesday blog, Microsoft explained that during a security review, it came across some additional vulnerabilities that could be exploited. To address the risk Microsoft is “providing additional security updates” along with the regular Patch Tuesday update.

While Windows XP is getting some extra attention this year, the company won't be returning full support to the OS. However, it does seem that until XP numbers start to die down, Microsoft is willing to deal with issues that have potential to be super wide spread.

KitGuru Says: It is weird to see Windows XP getting patches but given the seriousness of the WannaCry attack, it makes sense for Microsoft to keep its bases covered. That said, those still running XP should really start upgrading to a more secure OS version.

Dave Bennett, a YouTuber and apparent smartwatch modder, has managed to get Microsoft's ageing Windows XP operating system running on the LG G-Watch. The version of the OS was slimmed down to hit under 100MB in order to keep the upload time sitting at around 12 hours.

In a video demonstrating the watch, Bennett points out that while running Windows XP on a watch has no practical benefit, it does prove a cool concept. I doubt that anyone back in 2002 thought that one day we could run a desktop operating system on our wrists.

[yframe url='http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CB8bjYJuO3o']

Given that this version of Windows XP had to be trimmed down so much, it doesn't really do a whole lot. The GUI was removed so you can't see the classic Windows XP interface and a lot of the drivers are missing, leaving a command line window behind. This doesn't mean that the G-Watch couldn't run a fuller version of XP but it lacks the space and the upload time would take forever.

This isn't the first smartwatch mod we have seen in recently, One modder managed to get the Moto 360 working with an iPhone and late last year, someone managed to get Minecraft playing on a Samsung smartwatch as well.

Even with Windows 10 on the horizon, Windows 7 isn’t showing any sign of slowing down. In-fact, the ageing operating system’s market share is still growing, with Windows 7 now dominating 58.04 per cent of the market.

Part of the reason for this could be that Windows 7 owners, along with Windows 8.1 owners, will be getting a free upgrade to Windows 10 once it is ready to launch. A lot of users who were stuck on Windows XP or Vista may have since upgraded in order to get the Windows 10 update later down the line.

windows-7

Windows XP is declining, having 16.94 per cent of the market, in comparison; Windows 8.1 has 10.55 per cent, regular Windows 8 has 3.52 per cent and Windows Vista has 1.97 per cent of the market.

As you can see, Windows 8.1 still isn’t really taking off but it doesn’t really need to anymore with Windows 10 just around the corner. It will be interesting to see how many Windows 7 owners take advantage of Microsoft’s free upgrade.

KitGuru Says: Some of those Windows XP users have probably switched to Windows 7 now in order to take advantage of the free Windows 10 upgrade later down the road. However, I do still find it strange that people are so against Windows 8.1, even with decent programs like Classic Shell and Start Is Back around.

A number of executives of high-tech companies and some market observers have said that the effect of Windows XP’s end-of-life and increased sales of PCs will last for several quarters. However, Meg Whitman, chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard, believes that the effect is about to end. However, a good news is that sales of PCs are up even without it.

“The Windows XP expiration has contributed to our growth,” said Ms. Whitman during a conference call with financial analysts and investors. “Although we believe we are now through much of that benefit, our product line up […] is the strongest we have had in years and we continue to see customers looking to refresh their aging installed base.”

According to HP, its PC business revenue was $8.649 billion, up 12 per cent year over year, with a 4.0 per cent operating margin in the most recent quarter. Commercial PC revenue increased 14 per cent and consumer PC revenue increased 8 per cent. Total units were up 13 per cent with desktops units up 9 per cent and notebooks units up 18 per cent.

hp_spectre_xt_touchsmart_windows8_ultrabook

HP believes that it will be able to continue growing its share on the PC market, even if there is no Windows XP’s expiration effect. The company notes that while the end of Windows XP support increased sales of computers and HP's revenue, many commercial and consumer customers just realize that they need modern PCs, which is why they replace their old ones.

“While the XP refresh is largely done, we’re seeing good growth and continued growth in the commercial side,” said Ms. Whitman. “By the way, our consumer business grew 8 per cent, which we have not seen that in many-many years.”

Earlier this year Brian Krzanich, chief executive officer of Intel Corp., said that after Microsoft Corp. ceased to support its Windows XP operating system sales of commercial personal computers began to increase among corporate buyers and that would continue into calendar 2015.

KitGuru Says: What HP says means that many clients these days recognize the value of modern PCs and want to upgrade, which is a good news. The trend should actually be industry-wide. We heard something like this from the CEO of BestBuy earlier this year, but his explanation regarding the rise of PCs was a little different that Ms. Whitman’s. It will be interesting to hear what other PC makers think about the revival of the PC.

Chief executive officer of Intel Corp. said that replacement of Windows XP-based personal computers by businesses and enterprises will help the company to sell more microprocessors this fiscal year. While the company does not want to make predictions regarding next year, it does not exclude the possibility that the replacements will continue in 2015.

“We believe the [Windows] XP end-of-life kind of replacement will at least play through the end of the year and that’s as far as we have looked at it,” said Brian Krzanich, chief executive officer of Intel, during the quarterly conference call with financial analysts and investors. “It can go beyond that. […] We just have not really started to put our predictions and our estimates for 2015 together yet.”

Intel estimates that at present there are over 600 million of personal computers that are four years old and even older. A significant part of them are based on the Windows XP operating system and they are going to be replaced rather sooner than later, which represents additional opportunities going forward for Intel as well as its arch-rival Advanced Micro Devices.

What remains to be seen is when Windows 7-based systems made in 2010 – 2011 are set to be replaced. Such personal computers are powered by rather advanced microprocessors, offer decent performance and will be supported with security updates until 2020.

lenovo_think_idea_ultrabook_intel

After Microsoft ceased to provide security updates for its Windows XP operating system this April, businesses and enterprises started to replace their old personal computers with new ones powered by Windows 7 OS.

According to Intel, thanks to the end-of-life of Microsoft’s Windows XP operating system it managed to sell more processors for both desktops and notebooks.

For the second quarter of fiscal 2014 the world’s largest chipmaker reported revenue of $13.8 billion, up from $13.0 billion expected previously. The firm attributed additional revenue to increased sales of microprocessors for business PCs, such as the Core i-series chips with the vPro technology. Intel’s PC client group’s revenue during the Q2 FY2014 was $8.7 billion, up 9 per cent sequentially and up 6 per cent year-over-year.

KitGuru Says: over 600 million old PCs that need replacement is clearly a huge opportunity for Intel and other chipmakers. However, when it comes to enthusiast-class PCs, many of three-year old Sandy Bridge-based machines will not be replaced this year or next simply because modern quad-core processors hardly provide substantial performance advantage compared to those old machines…

Intel Corp. on Thursday announced that as a result of higher demand for business personal computers its sales for the second quarters will be significantly higher than expected. The world's largest chipmaker also increased its revenue and gross margin forecasts for the whole year. It is believed that businesses and enterprises started to replace systems with new PCs because Microsoft Corp. no longer supports its Windows XP operating system.

Intel now expects second-quarter revenue to be $13.7 billion, plus or minus $300 million, as compared to the previous range of $13.0 billion, plus or minus $500 million, the company said. The chipmaker is forecasting the mid-point of the gross margin range to increase by 1 point to 64 per cent, plus or minus a couple of percentage points. Intel also projects some revenue growth for the year as compared to the previous outlook of approximately flat. Intel is scheduled to report its second-quarter financial results on July 15, where it will discuss the reasons behind its revenue increase in details.

A number of market observers said that since Microsoft no longer supports the Windows XP operating system, many business and enterprise customers started to buy new machines featuring modern OSes and hardware. As a result, the demand for PCs began to increase in April. It is believed that the demand for business PCs will continue to be strong for the rest of the year.

Business PCs are powered by the Intel Core i-series processors featuring the vPro technology, which are based on the latest micro-architectures, such as the Ivy Bridge and the Haswell. If consumers also started to replace their PCs because of the Windows XP support (the lack of it), then shipments of Intel’s chips like Atom, Celeron and Pentium will also get a boost.

While Intel and PC makers will enjoy a boost in sales thanks to the end of the Windows XP support, it should be noted that such situation only happens once in several years.

“PCs have been getting less bad for a while,” said Stacy Rasgon, Bernstein analyst, in an interview with Reuters news-agency. “But if it's all business PCs then the question is going to be sustainability.”

KitGuru Says: While it is obvious that along with Intel a number of big PC suppliers will also benefit from increased demand for business PCs, it remains to be seen how the industry as a whole will (and whether) benefit from this situation…

As the countdown clock for the end Windows XP's life ticks ever onwards, users who still have old technology have been given encouragement from companies like Gigabyte to re-evaluate their position, but what would it really be like living with an unsupported OS?

For over a year, the internet has been rife with rumours of a growing arsenal of XP-attacks that are being hoarded by criminal organisations across the globe. There are those for whom cybercrime is a way of life, where ‘attack code' is constantly being bought/traded. As each exploit is picked up by companies like Microsoft, they consider how best to counter the threat – closing doors wherever possible.

In April, that ‘shutting of the doors' stops.

The fear is that, starting 9th April 2014, business and personal users who are still on Windows XP will be subject to a massive attack from hoarded exploits. Here's Microsoft's official position on the subject, “If you continue to use Windows XP after support ends, your computer will still work but it might become more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Also, as more software & hardware manufacturers continue to optimize for more recent versions of Windows, you can expect to encounter greater numbers of apps and devices that do not work with Windows XP”.

Serious stuff.

In the countdown to the 9th, KitGuru is going to be looking into the risks involved with not upgrading, including speaking to one of the UK's top security experts Dave Shearmon, CEO of security software company Cryptic, about how this will affect business users. But for now, we're more concerned with consumers.

Speaking with Andrew Ditchburn, technical marketing guru for Gigabyte, we quizzed him on how the change will affect average end users. He told us, “Microsoft has provided support for Windows XP for the past 12 years but that comes to an end on 8th April, 2014. Technical assistance for Windows XP will no longer be available and that includes the automatic updates that help protect your PC. Microsoft will also stop providing Microsoft Security Essentials for download on Windows XP too”.

“This means that Gigabyte, as a hardware manufacturer, can no longer develop new drivers or hardware to support Windows XP users,” he continued. “Our focus will be to work closely with Microsoft to deliver the latest technologies in support of its latest Windows operating systems.”

As far as he's concerned, the message is simple: “The features and benefits of a modern operating system are clear, so why not take this opportunity to upgrade both your operating system and hardware?”

“If you bought a PC with XP, just as Vista was being launched, then a typical enthusiast system might include a CPU like the classic Q6600“, Andrew explained. “It was a great chip, but when you compare that with a modern CPU like the 4670K, it will struggle. Why not upgrade your life with new hardware and a modern operating system?”.

Of course Gigabyte and many other hardware manufacturers are looking to take advantage of the changing of the OS guard and now has a full set of offers for XP owner/operators available here.
